It takes guts, if not outright egomania, to abandon your given surname and adopt a loaded one like Legend, but the former John Stephens must have sensed that loftiness would one day be his calling card: Once Again, the follow-up to the Grammy-gobbling, platinum pile-on that was Get Lifted, surpasses expectations. Not that it bears much relation to its predecessor. Again again trots out a stable of talented, modern-minded producers--Raphael Saadiq, Legend comrade Kanye West, and the unsinkable will.i.am--but it's nowhere near as self-conscious about embracing the old-school as the knowing, R&B edge-skimming Lifted. Don't expect a derivative mash of smudgy, nostalgia-filching sounds, though, because despite its retro leanings, what's in store somehow crackles with currency. Call it neo-retro if you must, but never call it unimaginative: first single "Save Room" coasts, drifts, and floats along a ponderous path spiked by a cool keyboard-y crescendo; second single "Heaven" busts out a big, busy beat over a slow seduction; and a couple of selections--"Each Day Gets Better" and "PDA"--are so bright and twirly they seem custom-made for dizzy love scenes or jaunty, sunny-day skips through the park. Maybe the most unusual track is "Show Me," a rock song that pilfers elements of Hendrix and finds Legend climbing a few octaves to sound, weirdly, like Jeff Buckley, but it works: so slippery is its beat and so affecting are its hope-laced lyrics that, oddness aside, it's among the disc's best. Sandwiched as it is among 14 songs that all sound like future classics, that's saying something. --Tammy La Gorce

Calll it what you will - jazz, crossover, blues fusion - the cuts work and work well. His "Save Room" in particular adds a quiet energy to his body of work and the rest of the album is just as strong. There is depth here, there is thought here, there is music here.

John legend first cd "Get lifted" was a joy to listen to. His second cd "Once again" is "Once is enough already"!. He sounds straned and annoying. The lyrics are not well written, more like very immature. He tries way to hard and you can hear it in his voice. These R&B acts are losing a lot of fans by making stupid music like this and expect us to "Like this crap". All they care about is getting paid. If you want to hear real R&B with raw lyrics listen to Amy winehouse or Corinne Bailey Rae. The difference between R&B Brits and american fake R&B, they sing with emotion, write meaningful lyrics and have great Vocals. American R&B is only in it for our cash and make awful music with no substance. As long as we keep buying music like this. They will continue to make trashy music like this.

Very different from his first album, but still exceptional. I think it's a definite suprise for JL fans, but truly enjoyable. Favourite is Another Again!!!

Happy is the composer who has an advocate as passionate and talented as Leonard Bernstein. These Copland performances have been the preferred versions since they were first issued--better even than the composer's own, later recordings. Originally they were spread over two discs, but thanks to the extended playing time of the compact disc, you can now get all three great Copland ballets together, along with the ever popular Fanfare for the Common Man. Bernstein brings to this music the right sharpness of rhythm but also a typically open-hearted warmth. He coaxes a virtuoso response from the New York Philharmonic, which knows this music as well (or better) than anyone. Self- recommending. --David Hurwitz

Aaron Copland's masterful works are here interpreted by Bernstein. Nothing says the American sound like Copland, and there is no better interpreter than Bernstein. This recording is one of the best in my collection. I would recommend this to anyone (even non-classical music fans).

I have the SACD version of these recordings (except for the "Fanfare" which, in this case, is the version taken from Bernstein's recording of Copland's Third Symphony) and I must agree with others here that the performances are definitive. The "Rodeo" has more energy than any other recording I know of, in fact it can almost go over the top! "Billy the Kid" is quiet and tender, dramatic and bold and "Appalachian Spring" is dead-on. The last section of this ballet is one of my very favorite pieces of music and Bernstein's tempo and phrasing here could well be called perfect.

Without question, this splendid CD is my favorite recording of some of Aaron Copland's most popular orchestral ballet scores. In Leonard Bernstein he had both a good friend and a devout ally, who successfully championed Copland's music, helping to ensure his reputation as one of the greatest - if not the greatest - 20th Century American composer. Sony has done a superb job in digitally remastering this recording, offering some of the best sound I've heard from a vintage Leonard Bernstein/New York Philharmonic recording. But more importantly than the recording's superb sonic quality is the quality of these performances of Copland's scores. Bernstein leads in New York Philharmonic in these virtuoso performances, replete with lush, vibrant playing from the winds, horns and strings. His warm, truly heart-felt interpretation of "Applachian Spring" is truly mesmerizing, and the best I have heard from a recording. And yet, I am am just as impressed with his conducting of both "Rodeo" and "Billy the Kid"; the latter replete with superb solos from the orchestra's timpanist. An elegant performance of "Fanfare for the Common Man" closes out this CD recording. Fans of Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra shouldn't hesitate in acquiring this superb CD.

If I was forced to recommend one CD of American music, I would feel very safe in backing this one. These interpretations have yet to be surpassed, and not even Copland himself could muster the same type of perfection that Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic did in this recording. Bernstein's way with Rodeo is unbelievable, and this alone is worth the price of the disc. The music on this recording has a lot to do with why, as Americans, we can all be proud of our place in the history of western music.

With 39 reviews under me, I will dispense with the adjectives to try and describe each interpretation of each piece on this disc, and simply say that these performances have been recommended by almost everyone (professional critics included of course) since they appeared; get it and find out why.

Somewhere, Kenny G is hiding behind his cascading ringlets in shame. Chris Botti, a jazz world super-talent whose trumpeting earns frequent comparisons to Miles Davis and Chet Baker, has found the formula for classing up the pop charts, and within it there's not a single soaring sax or tired attempt at career revivalism to be found. What we're treated to instead is an all-star lineup (Sting, Gladys Knight, Michael Buble and others) vocally saluting a musician whose resume reads like a page torn out of the Rock Snob's Dictionary: in addition to touring with Sting, Botti has played sideman to Paul Simon, Natalie Merchant, Joni Mitchell, and dozens more. Here that experience pays off handsomely. Gone are the matinee-idol smooth artist's earlier experiments with jazz synthesizers and pop-fusion compositions (see 2002's Night Sessions for those), and present in their place are his classical instincts. Gil Evans might have been his guide as the unmistakable opener "Embraceable You," one of a handful of instrumental tracks, swirls into the enchanting, ultra-sophisticated "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life," for instance, and listeners need not feel like fogies for loving it. If Steven Tyler can sign on to sing along with a traditional arrangement of Charlie Chaplin's "Smile" while the London Session Orchestra lays down its trademark jazz lushness behind him, after all, you can let down your guard long enough to admit this disc leaves you feeling vaguely dreamy. --Tammy La Gorce

This is a beautiful album and is highly recommended for anyone recovering from the end of a relationship

I listen to my music on my computer through iTunes. I bought this CD assuming I would be able to import it to iTunes like the others I have purchased in the past. That is impossible with this "ENHANCED" CD. In fact it includes a warning that you must uninstall it immediately to protect the security of your computer. The music may be good, I wouldn't know. The only thing I have been able to listen to is the samples on Amazon. I guess I will be buying my music through iTunes in the future. Amazon should be more persistent in posting warnings about SONY CD's.

Highlight versions of cast recordings are by definition a compromise, and this reduction of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera is no exception. Weighing in at 59 minutes, it's over 40 minutes shorter than the two-disc version, excising many musical scenes that convey the flow and impact of the show (which include, admittedly, a lot of patter and screaming). On the other hand, all the hits are here--"Think of Me," "Angel of Music," the title tune, "The Music of the Night," "All I Ask of You," "Masquerade," and "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again"--and Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman are still on hand to make their distinctive contributions to the original London cast. So if you're looking for a convenient, inexpensive single disc that will let you enjoy Lloyd Webber's scrumptious melodies without having to immerse yourself in the action, this just might be for you. --David Horiuchi

I really liked the idea of a highlights cd; however, The Music of the Night is not the same one that is on the original two-disc cd. The words aren't even the same. If you enjoy Music of the Night, skip this cd. Otherwise, this cd would be 5 stars.

If you only want to hear the songs from this musical, this one is for you. But if you want the full version, get the 4-disc version. I listen to this version in my car when I'm on the road, but I listen to the 4-disc version at home. Both versions are worth the purchase.

This is one of my most treasured CDs. The voices of the cast are incredible! "Think of Me" and "All I Ask of You" are 2 of my favorites. If you enjoy the story behind Phantom, yu will like this soundtrack.

I think that this is the best PHANTOM soundtrack out there:

1)It has the original Broadway cast, the best.
2)It cuts out the more risqu? parts of the show (believe me, there are some), making it "appropriate for the whole family."
3)The entire CD is on one disc, so you can go through the show w/o switching discs.
4)The only song that the movie soundtrack has on it that this doesn't is "Learn to Be Lonely," which appears in the credits, and isn't really a great song anyways.

Reykjavík-based noise quartet Sigur Rós are the biggest band in their native Iceland, which should say much, much more about the collective insanity of that earthquake-ridden, blizzard-beaten crag of an island than anything to do with Sigur Rós's sound. With tongue firmly poked in cheek. Being "Visually Enhanced" Music is, first, enjoyed by the eye.
Which is to say that if the COVER is "interesting" the MUSIC is, possibabblely, at least as "inspired."

Take for instance the COVER of "Rock Bottom"... EXACTLY Why Mr. Wyatt and Alfraidie Cat ever changed that is beyond understanding, however it still touches the heart all the way up the charts. With that in mind, Sigur's Ro's's A'gaetis's Byrjun's, (it is with a tear on the other cheek this type-tighter does not connect the a to the e,) COVER has been observed for the past 8 years or so, picked up and perused and neatly replaced neatly in the bin still in protective placenta . ( See :: Put THAT Book Back on the Shelf and 787 Ray Johnson gives birth to CalligRayphy's new hole ) So it passes the "Visual Review". The Smekkleysa alone is worth the price. Honestly up until now only SNIPPETS of this have reached our ears and thus just the SNIPPETS and jib-lettes are being review here, so don't expect the WHOLE Inch-A-La-La. To make it short and tweet :: The SNIPPETS are not nearly long enough, however having purchased this, we are looking forward to cele-berating the entire Jam Boring Jamboree . 5 out of 5 stars AMAZING MUSIC BEYOND THE COMPREHENSION OF SOME POP MUSIC CRITICS MINDS.......2007-06-22

Like the other reviewer nearby, I also have a pet peeve about this word "pretentious" when applied to Sigur Ros (or other arful pop). It is a universal cliche amongst reviewers who don't like art rock or progressive rock. The word "pretentious" actually means:

---adjective DISAPPROVING
---trying to appear or sound more important or clever than you are,
especially in matters of art and literature:
---a pretentious art critic
---The novel deals with grand themes, but is never heavy or pretentious.

-- characterized by assumption of dignity or importance.
-- making an exaggerated outward show; ostentatious

I've heard this word all my life because apparently I like a lot of music that is "pretentious." The last time I heard it used was recently on a radio special about the 40th anniversary for The Beatles Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, which one critic decried as "the beginning of pretentiousness in pop music". And this for an album that is consistently at the top of almost every list as the most important album ever made-- I guess a LOT of people like pretentious art.
What these critics are saying is that pop and rock musicians that have other musical influences (i.e., world music, classical music, jazz music) are somehow falsely trying to BE world musicians, classical musicians, and jazz musicians by using those influences. Or that lyricist that have other influences (i.e., poetry) are trying to BE poets. In reality, all they are is open-minded pop and rock musicians, willing to experiment with skills they have that lie beyond the boundaries of early rock styles (i.e., Eddie Cochran, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc.).
I'm not sure why it makes you pretentious simply because you have musical skills beyond pop and rock, but I can't imagine a more boring scenario than a genre that didn't grow or challenge itself. In reality, this is how the language of an art form evolves. The heyday for what Sigur Ros is trying to do was between 1967-1977, when progressive rock was literally a top ten chart topping phenomenon.
In the end, this is all "pretentious" means when used by such critics: they don't like the styles of music that exist midway between folk and classical, or rock and jazz, or whatever and whatever. I love music rooted in pop, rock, and folk that is embellished by all sorts of influences from more complicated genres. I love the fact that a song can swing from a gentle little folk tune to a complicated instrumental movement. I also love the storytelling aspect of longer pieces of music and concept albums-- it gives the lyricist more time to stretch out and explore a theme. These artists are not trying to be something that they are not, they are being exactly what they ARE: pop artists with ears open to other influences. This happened as soon as Paul McCartney (in 1967) came into the studio after hearing a classical work with a Bach trumpet, and he wrote and plopped a similar trumpet arrangement in "Penny Lane." It happened when Brian Wilson crumbled the Beach Boys formulaic song structure (1966) and started to record his collage piece SMiLE. And then for ten odd years after, much of the best of rock music had similar boundary-breaking tendencies.
Sigur Ros is very much in the art-rock category. You can see their lead singer from one or two vantage points (albeit extreme ones): either he is the most otherworldly supremely beautiful gift to pop music that has ever happened, or he is a pretentious pseudo-opera singer. And really, which vantage you choose depends on whether or not you are moved by his work. You can tell which camp I fit in-- I think he's one of the most important pop artists on the planet, and you'd have to be crazy not to at least give him a chance to work his magic on you. Buy this record--- TODAY!

Breathtaking is truly the only word that describes this album as a whole. It's one of the most stunning and beautiful albums i've ever heard, and I don't even understand a single word that's sung! There's not a single bad track on this album, each song makes you not only feel as if you're in Iceland watching the sunrise, but such uplifting, spiritual emotion. Sigur Ros might not be considered "easy listening" to those who are new to them...but once you hear this album, you just don't give a damn. Their music speaks volumes, you FEEL what they're saying, not what they're saying. This album is one of the best albums ever, once again showing how Icelanders sure know how to play their music.

This is one of the 10 best albums I've ever heard. Cannot recommend this album enough. If you have never heard of Sigur Ros you might want to borrow an album from a friend first but if you have remotely heard of them you know no words can describe their sound, so buy this album now!!!

Live country albums are relatively scarce these days, and that's regrettable. Granted, the studio is a remarkable place, yet there's something about a quality concert recording--the immediacy and raw interaction with the audience--that no studio effort can match. While most concert albums are recorded at one location, Kenny Chesney created this collection from tapes of five years of shows at various locales. The material reflects the past eight years of his career, including "How Forever Feels" from 1998, "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy" from 1999, and "What I Need to Do" from 2000. "When the Sun Goes Down" comes complete with Uncle Kracker, who appeared on the single. There's an edgy version of 2005's "Beer in Mexico" and a remarkable performance of "Anything But Mine" in which a surprised Chesney stands by as the audience takes over the chorus. What's amazing is the blazing-hot consistency of the band throughout. While their backing reflects Chesney's arena-rock influences (no number is shorter than four minutes), his charisma, energetic presence, and ability to connect is pure country. --Rich Kienzle

It was cool to hear his old songs with his new voice. I think his voice is more smooth and rich than it used to be (I liked his old voice too). Anyway, good sound, mixed well, upbeat, great song selection. Not alot of his "MEGA HITS", but we can hear those anytime. I really enjoyed this live album, totally recommend.

This CD is - wow! I have so much to say about it and so little time! This album features three pieces from "The Phantom of the Opera" - Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again, The Music of the Night, and The Phantom of the Opera theme. They're all beautiful. The second piece on the album is "Unexpected Song". It has beautiful octaves and orchastrations. Chanson d'Efance is an amazing French piece with vibrato - and then some. I forgot to mention that there is another piece from The Phantom of the Opera - All I Ask of You - except that the song is not sung by the original cast from the musical. The next few pieces are fairly decent, until you get to Memory from Cats. WOW - is it spectacular! Then we get to two other pieces from Cats - Gus: The Theater Cat and Macavity: The Mystery Cat. Gus is a song that just tells about a cat and his history. A man speaks the lines that Gus would say in the actual musical - and it makes the song interesting. Macavity is AWESOME! I know that I said that I didn't prefer this song for Brightman on her album "Surrender". I finally listened to it more carefully, and found that it's really interesting to listen to! My favorite song on the whole entire album - however - has to be "Tell Me on a Sunday". Beautiful lyrics, orchestrations, and overall spectacular voice talent ties the whole song together. Pie Jesu is a fairly nice piece from both Brightman and Paul Miles-Kingston - the 16 year old boy soprano. His voice is pure and straight with minimal vibrato. However, Brightman's voice shows a little bit TOO much vibrato! Overally, it's a good piece from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Requium. THIS CD IS AMAZING! If you love Sarah from the Phantom of the Opera, then this collection of Lloyd Webber's work is just for you.

I also recommend Charlotte Church - (in her earlier career) - including Voice of an Angel and her self-titled album. I also recommend Love Changes Everything - The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection Vol.2 - just another grouping of Webber's classics. I also recommend Andrea Boucelli - he's awesome!

From a pure-pleasure standpoint, the first Beethoven's Wig was nothing to flip over, and the second disc in the series follows suit. However, that is not to say that this is not a valuable and possibly ingenious record. Those unfamiliar with the premise will quickly get the picture: Producer/writer/lead singer/chief clever guy Richard Perlmutter gathers a bundle of important classical works (Paganini's "Violin Concerto #2," Strauss' "Blue Danube Waltz") and makes up silly, catchy lyrics to lay over them, informing the listener about the piece or its composer. Standing out for their offbeat brilliance this time are "Dvorak the Czechoslovak" ("Humoresque #7," Dvorak) and "Wow What a Wedding Cake" (Wedding March from A Midsummer Night's Dream, Mendelssohn). Few stabs at mixing education with entertainment succeed so well. Both of my grandchildren (and their parents and grandparents) are hooked on this CD and all of the silliness and beauty it brings into our lives. We sing to it, dance to it, and find ourselves thinking about it at odd times. Who can't love singing Verdi VERY LOUD? I've now started giving this as a simple baby gift, especially to those with older siblings. They are already equipped with clothing and nursery gear, and Beethoven's Wig invites the whole family to gather round...even if it is just on short car rides.

My husband, 18 month old daughter and I all love this CD. It's a staple in the car. One caveat- these lyrics will get stuck in your head and I now find myself singing the "words" to these songs when I hear them in a store or commercial! I'm hoping this means my daughter will recognize these songs as she gets older.

Like the first volume, this CD encourages young children to enjoy classical music. The silly lyrics sometimes impart factual information on the composer or the piece. There are 11 sing-along symphonies and then the 11 symphonies are replayed without the lyrics--total of 22 tracks. Booklet with lyrics and trivia is included. All our children (aged 2-12) enjoy this CD, as do we.

My children loved Beethovens Wig 1. I checked this one out at the library. Then, we decided we had to have this one too.
Yes, one is the best but 2 is still wonderful.
Save yourself the shipping and order both at the same time.
We all thoroughly enjoy it. My 4 yr old can name these classicals when he hears them elsewhere and he can hum these beautiful songs. Much better than kiddie rhymes and Disney jingles. Culture your children the funniest way!!

The tunes and word stay with you and before you know it, you are signing them along. My two kids (ages 9 and 7) ask me to put the CD on as soon as we get into the car. What a wonderful and fun way to get them to love classical music!

Often times when someone hears the terms "gothic" and "metal" they think of girl lead singers with a melodic voice and music to perfectly accompany her. Type O Negative comes pretty close to that but instead of a female lead singer they have a male. Type O Negative sounds somewhat like Sonata Arctica except that Peter Steele has a deeper voice than Tony Kakko. I will admit that when I first listened to Type O Negative the change in voice was startling at first and still is.

I didn't really like this CD but if I had to choose a favorite song it would have to be the title track. I really did like the minor haunting chords but Steele's voice really made me jump back in my seat. I would definitely recommend this CD to anyone who wanted a change in gothic metal. [..]

OK, so I would REALLY give it 2 1/2 stars, however, since i can't give half stars, it doesn't deserve 3. I would like to say, right off the bat, yes, I too, am a BIG TON fan. However, I will NOT sugarcoat a review or be blinded by what is put out on this CD just because I really like these guys. I just finished it, from womb to tomb, and I have to say this really falls short.

A primer first, my music influence ranges from, my favorite, RUSH, to TON to Celldweller, but I also love stuff like Tom Vedvik and Global Communications, so my interests are not just cemented in Goth Rock, or the likes thereof. And, I too, have been in the music field, so I'll try and put a "professional" opinion on this review.

When I listened to this CD, I was amazed at how much repitition in licks and hooks this album has, not only within itself, but also with their last three recordings. From the begining of Dead Again, with the pick scraping down the strings, to the ending of the song, which sounds just like the ending of "Angry Inch." Now, I can just hear the avid, or rabid, TON fan saying, "But it's their thing, that's what TON is, it's their sound." Well, I prefer to have constant originality and not rehashing songs that sound just like 4 or 5 others before it.

Like one other reviewer wrote, they do have some chick singing in "Halloween in Heaven," and yes, her voice is far from great. In fact, it's rather dull, almost sounding like she had a slight head cold. Sorry if she finds this review negative, but I call them like I hear them.

What is slightly impressive is some of the guitar solos. What is even more impressive, if it's really Kenny playing them, and not having them substituted, like he did on "How Could She." As much as I love these guys, they do fall short in the musically talented arena, compared to the likes of Rush, Yes, and such, as well as second seat players (insert band here). However, TON will also be the first to admit they are not star performers in the given roles, but what they do have, is what it takes to sound significantly different from anyone else, and that's what makes them a star act.

I just wish, after waiting nearly 4 years, is that something a little more "orginal" from this "orginal" band could have been produced. I absolutely loved "Life is Killing Me," "October Rust," and even Peter's least favorite recording, "World Coming Down." Although I found myself taping out a beat hear and there, or just sitting back and trying to focus on the song, this recording offers no real catchy hooks, muscially charged impressions, and no real "POP". ( And I don't mean "pop" as in "pop music") At times the music almost sounds like a ditribe of repetitiveness.

Some people talk about giving it an x amount of times listening to it and then "dreaming" about a song and suddenly falling for this album. I just don't see that happening, and it really shouldn't have to, especially if you really like a band. The really sh**ty thing about this is, watch me listen to this a dozen more times and then start to come over to the dark side. Hmm, doubt it.

I still love these guys, and yes, it will always be in my collection and on my mp3 player. I just hope they get back to thier old ways, soon.

I guess I should have downloaded this album first, but Type O was one of those bands I thought I could always count on to at least deliver something moderately enjoyable. When I first bought this and popped it in my car's cd player, I was surprised that the opening track sounded so lame. I stuck with it though and went track by track, never finding a single song that sounded like the Type O that I know.

I gave it two more tries, and each time I just couldn't tolerate it. I put it away for a couple months and tried again today, and I think it actually sounds a bit worse.

OK, let me make this simple; to me, October Rust was perfect. I enjoy the entire cd, every single song. World Coming Down was great, I thought about 70% of it was excellent. Then Life is Killing Me came out and I thought it was rather disappointing and didn't care for the direction they were going in, but I still enjoyed about 30% of it. This new cd sounds like the worst parts of Life is Killing Me stretched out over an entire cd. I guess if you liked the last cd and thought songs like Electrocute, Nettie and The Dream is Dead were lame, maybe you'd like this.

If you love the old screaming Peter Steele and the melodic singing from their more popular albums, than this is a good choice. A lot less depressing than previous albums.
