This needs a more articulate review..........2005-12-10
To tell the truth, the only reason I even listened to this disc in the store is because I spotted the cover, and wondered what the hell a guy who looked like that could sound like. I had a gushing smile on my face as I realized there was real talent and expression behind Moondog's odd facade. The first album on this disc (there are two herein) is made up of more "orchestral" material like none you've ever heard before (one of these tracks "stamping Grounds" is in "The Big Lebowski". The second album is made up of a series of short "rounds"; cyclical songs with naturally repetitive compositions (think row row row your boat, or three blind mice). Due to the familiar nature of such song forms, and the unique compositions employed by Moondog, the second album is quite buoyant and joyful. This is an all around great and very familiar listening experience, and quite a timeless set of albums. Get it while you still can!

35 unmistakable tracks.......2005-02-24
You don't need to buy the double-disc "Moondog 1 & 2" to hear the two albums - all that music can also be heard on this (75 minute) single disc.
Even though the only cover art of this edition is the original front cover of the 1969 "Moondog" (no original back-cover thereof nor any art from the 1971 "Moondog II",) all 35 tracks are nicely crammed in here.
What's listed under "Listen to samples" on the amazon page are only the last 20 tracks of this CD and all titles are linked to the wrong tracks.
"Moondog I" (tracks 1-9) opens with "Theme" and "Stomping Ground" - two somewhat coherent pieces which a few years ago were made quite famous through the soundtrack of Coen Brothers' wonderful movie "The Big Lebowski." The album features a 50+ piece orchestra, which, among other greats, includes jazz veterans Don Butterfield (tuba) and Ron Carter (double bass.) In the list of personnel, Moondog is not credited for playing percussion, but the bass, which I assume is a misprint.
The beautiful Charlie Parker homage "Lament I: Bird's Lament" is here performed in its original form, but can also be found on the 1994 Moondog recording "Sax Pax For a Sax" on only saxes and percussion.
The orchestral performances on "Moondog I" aren't flawless, but should not be judged harshly because of the very personal, highly individual, and wonderfully eccentric form of compositions that they are. Budget, which is a very common issue when it comes to orchestral recordings, is another element that probably has not allowed much rehersing or many (if any) re-takes.
Before ordering this disc I knew that I'd love "Moondog I" since I'd heard most of it previously, but I was skeptical towards "Moondog II" because of some reviews I'd read of it. I was however curious, and listening to it when it had arrived was a very nice surprise.
Aside from performances by Louis "Moondog" Hardin (percussion, piano, vocals) and his daughter June (vocals,) "Moondog II" features 6 other musicians who, at different points throughout the album, play virginals, recorders, harpsichords, ancient organs, guitars, schom, viola de gamba, and troubadour harp. These instruments alone make a very individual sound, but the compositions (many of which are in 5/4 and 5/8) and the poetry make this the most wonderful group of rounds (short vocal canons) you've ever heard.
In my 600+ CD collection, this is among my favorites.
Wonderful.......2004-01-26
Beautiful, quirky, fascinating. A combination of classical, jazz, and improv, this collection made me close my eyes and just feel the music. Interspersed with several of Hardin's two-line poems as punctuation, the musical pieces are truly a wonder.
The Different Drummer We Once Were.......2004-01-05
I bought this album because of a memory, but the music stands up remarkably well to a more objective listening.
It was my first trip to New York City, and my father approached the wildly-dressed, tall and intiimidating figure standing on the corner of 56th St. and 7th Ave. They conversed in Norwegian long enough for me to draw nearer and realize the stranger represented no threat. In fact, I left with a book of hs canons, which remains in my collection of piano literature to this day.
I met Moondog once again--serendipitously, on Milwaukee's Wisconsin Avenue one day in the seventies. I have no idea how he got there or how he left, but this time I wanted to protect him from the insensitive pedestrians swirling around us and threatening our shared moment.
Moondog's music is as singular as he is, and offers a glimpse into his creative spirit. It begins with an idea and a form, not with an emotion or sentiment. Each piece is simple and brief, but not simplistic or fragmentary. He avoids any form of dissonance, even seventh chords and "blue" notes (flatted thirds). Music, like life, he seems to be saying, can be a straightforward, delighting adventure, providing one cherishes the quest itself above its so-called object and maintains a focused attention on the wonders of the present moment.
My only slight disappointment with this recording is that the madrigals, sung by Moondog and his daughter, are subjected to some studio effects that make them sound more artificial and commercial than they deserve to be.
For those who love the music.......2003-11-29
It is simple, it is clear, it is wonderful! I don`t know what style is this. Some people call it `jazz`, but second disc is strongly attached to european madrigal canons. I think, if we listen really good music, we never asked about styles. I heard familiar tunes from Tchaikovsky to Resident`s Duck Stab. You must have this if you`re music lover. If you`re musician (who plays music, dont `have a job`) you must have it too. Listen once or twise, if you don`t like it, simply put it on the shelf. Properly time will come.
P.S. My favorite `I love you` and `Nero`s Expedition`
Moondog.......2002-05-16
I was in the St. Thomas Boys Choir in the early 70's. We would walk to church for rehearsal, and pass Moondog, standing on the corner, usually by the ABC building. A couple of us would talk to him in our free time...he knew our names by our voices. We would listen to his poetry, and he seemed intigued by our choir, although he never heard us, I think. I got his album around this time, and have had it ever since. Fascinating pieces, very intricate, but also with "a hook"...that you find yourself humming along with. I heard he moved to Germany, where he wrote a nine hour canon. Overall, an amazing life story, and an incredible talent.

This sublime, tranquil recording features 11 haunting ambient tone poems for treated piano. They are crafted from simple chords, arpeggios, or melodies that are frequently trailed by delicate electronic whispers to produce dreamy results. Even though Budd and Eno chose to compose and record in a minimalist style, their gorgeous, moody music evokes so much more, for the reverberating spaces between the notes are just as important as the notes themselves. In an interesting experiment, both "Against the Sky" and "An Echo of Night" explore the same melancholic musical theme in different settings--the former is a sparse piano piece with gentle electronic treatments, the latter is a murky synth work set against a nocturnal outdoor backdrop. (Budd later explored the theme again as the ethereal elegy "Olancha Farewell" on his 1986 solo album, Lovely Thunder.) Beautifully understated, the slow-motion ballet of The Pearl is a piece of striking ambient impressionism that was highly original in its day, well before the myriads of New Age imitators its composers spawned, and it remains fresh and vital two decades later. --Bryan Reesman
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant impressions of sound.......2007-05-11
Without a doubt, the ambient label originated with Brian Eno. In this classic collaboration with Harold Budd, sounds from seemingly random spheres of life are distilled in connected pieces. These tracks are like a good walk in the woods on an autumn morning. Blurred textures, softly colored tones and a meditative pacing all give this album the impression of Nature itself, only more vibrant and well-defined.
The best element for me is "A Stream with Bright Fish," which opens with a coolly evocative synthesizer tone and beautifully sparse piano notes. You can practically hear the small currents and splashes of water, dappled sunlight and refracted images of silvery fish. Messers Eno and Budd haven't synthesized so much as tuned in to the atmosphere of the world just outside our everyday world. It's worth every shimmery moment.
Agreed, a 20+ year album that still is incredible.......2007-05-05
I remember first hearing "Late October" in the summer of 1984 on a local radio program. I went out immediately and purchased the cassette and basically wore it out. When ever i was in a stressed mood or needed to go for a long drive and have some good alone time.., this was the music. Now, almost 24 years later it brings back the best of memories and still is a pleasure to listen to any time. This is a must. You will not be disappointed!!!!!
The greatest ambient recording ever.......2007-01-20
Though it's over 20 years old, this still remains one the best recordings in the ambient genre. In my opinion, it is THE greatest. Period.
If you're new to the genre, this is the place to start.
If you already own this disc, I suggest listening to Budd's collaboration with John Foxx ("Translucence/Drift Music"), as it comes very close to approximating the sound of "The Pearl".
Probably the best Budd/Eno team-up album of all time.......2006-07-06
Even more than "Music for Airports" and "Plateaux of Mirror", this album is the definitive collaboration album from the Budd & Eno archives. A groundbreaking classic of the ambient genre, this disc just gets better with time, especially in an era when the New Age and ambient genres have been overrun with imitators and dilettantes.
Subtle, gorgeous piano and synthesizer work features throughout, with a richness and emotion that is hard to find on other ambient albums. When it comes to "relaxation" tunes, this one has the field beat, and I've spent many an evening, in bed, under the stars, with my wife or alone, letting the quiet, spare beauty of this disc spirit me away from the troubles of the everyday world.
Anyone seeking to find the roots of true ambient should look no further. Budd & Eno were doing it long, long before most others, and they were doing it with a style and a gentle grace that has come to typify their collaborative efforts.
If you are going to buy one Budd cd.......2006-04-14
this is the one. His other ones are great, but this one of restrained paino and Eno's light effects of slight warbles that may make you feel like you are on a quiet beach or perhaps looking in a goldfish pond leave one in a trance. This is the cd that inspired me to start playing the piano. This is the Erik Satie cd of ambient.

Music for Long Winter Nights and any time of day or season!.......2004-11-21
Leif Ove Andsnes is a fine musician who feels an affinity to his Scandinavian roots as he so ably demonstrates in this exquisite recording of Norwegian piano music. Yes, we all know the Grieg pieces and Andsnes plays them with shimmering intensity and flair. But it is the piano works of David Monrad Johansen, Geirr Tveitt, Fartein Valen, and Harald Saeverud that come as special surprises. Each of these composers lived well into the 20th Century and yet their music, while embracing forms of modern idiom, simply 'feels' Nordic. Here are some of the more ethereal melodies and folksong-inspired rhythms in the literature for the solo piano and Andsnes plays them to perfection.Another fine aspect of this generous recording is the engineering choices of allowing enough silence between pieces to allow the air to breathe around the one last performed and inhale, ready for the next. This is a very special album of new music that should encourage other pianists (and audiences) to pay closer attention to Norwegian composers. Recommended. Grady Harp, November 2004
Gorgeous.......2003-12-04
I read an article about Leif Ove Andsnes in "The Economist", of all places, which called him one of the "most interesting" pianists today. Now I know why. His performance of the nine pieces by Grieg on this CD is totally liquid, effortless, MORE perfect than snowfall. I've heard some fantastic Grieg performances, but this is the best by far.
The most interesting tracks on the disc, though, are actually Geirr Tveitt's "Fifty Folktunes from Hardanger". Tveitt based these songs on folk melodies he collected up in northern Norway (his native region) around the time of the German occupation, and they're full of some of the melancholy he must have felt during the war. They're also, as you would expect, full of snow-cloaked mountains, love, stars, dreams, the electric northern sky and, yes, "long, long winter nights". While Tveitt's distinctive idiom is avant-garde enough to be unique (unlike in a lot of settings of folktunes by other composers), it's a lot more accessible than some of Johansen, Valen, and Saeverud's pieces on this disc. I just heard an orchestrated version of the "Hardanger Tunes" on one of Naxos' CDs -- pretty impressive, but even more overpowering in the hands of Andsnes.
Engaging listening.......2002-02-19
A collection of works by Norwegian composers, including several worthy lesser-known works, performed with superlative musicianship by Leif Ove Andsnes. Rhythmic passages churn, fast passages sparkle, lyrical passages sing, to great emotional effect. Andsnes makes his technical proficiency a servant to the compositions. Every composer should be so lucky to have an artist such as this play his works.
for a long long winternight.......2000-11-27
This album shows that Scandinavien music is not only Grieg. Compositions in different styles are performed in a wonderful way by Leif Ove Andsnes. The atmosphere is the same in all pieces: as in a long, long winter night.
LEIF OVE ANDSNES : A PARAGON OF CULTURAL VIRTUE.......2000-01-28
To explore the culture of your homeland with the sophistication and dedication that Andsnes expresses on the album deserves a Nobel Prize. This dynamic young Norwegian pianist escews cultural imperialism and exploitation and gives pride to those who recognise the depth and value of the music that has evolved over time in this seemingly far far land. This collection of Norwegian music, echoing so often the dynamics of the landscape and psychological interrogation of the nature of time ~ long long winter nights, and by implication long long summer days. Andsnes bears witness to the craft and creativity of his forebearers with style beautifully expressing their ideas and ambitions. A wonderfully powerful cd. Enjoy!

A Surprise from Transylvania.......2000-06-30
Nimbus Records are rumored to headquarter in the stones of an ancient castle: our curiosity leads us to wonder whether those historic blocks and their inhabitants are related in some most unnatural way to the Transylvanian treasures on this disc.
We have Nicolae Bretan-the Transylvanian composer of heart-rendingly beautiful melodies; the lyrics of the Old World's most soulful-Goga, Ady, Eminescu, Cosbuc, Eftimiu, Rilke; the superb singing and playing of Transylvania's baritone Ludovic Konya and pianist Ferdinand Weiss.
The cover and tray card tell us about the baritone and pianist, but the real surprise is within: once one looses the nails from the shrink-wrapped jewel-case/coffin, and crow-bars out the gothic-proportioned booklet from its crypt, one discovers that Nimbus have kept another pianist-Martin Berkofsky-prisoner in its dungeon.
Perhaps this Berkofsky is not allowed into the daylight, or worse, perhaps Nimbus have already dosed him with the requisite stake in the heart. Neverthess be Berkofsky one of the living or one of the living dead, his partnership (eight of the 22 tracks on this disc,) with Konya reaches those rare and sublime heights of truth to the composer.
Nimbus' crypt yields no biographical information of any of the performers and we wonder if they all are cursed to perpetual darkness.
Or perhaps this is all a clever advertising ploy like the soft-drinks' purveyors "open to see if you have won a prize." We have opened and we have definitely won a grand prize.

Complete recordings of Mikrokosmos are relatively common these days, but aside from guiding students I wonder what purpose they serve. This is a series of piano study pieces starting at the most basic level, and the music with genuine listening interest really begins only with Book 3 (of 6). Similarly the duets are mostly teaching pieces, and though they make for good listening in small groups, the entire series becomes tiresome. Bartók wrote magnificent music, and the later books of Mikrokosmos are filled with superb little pieces. But though the performances in this set are all excellent, not much of the music is basic Bartók. --Leslie Gerber
