To follow up their debut, Just Add Ice, the V-Roys are thickening the soup. Just Add Ice was a justly heralded debut, rippling with twang and still grit-surfaced enough to give off a post-Replacements feel that pleased the alt-country hordes. All About Town will surely extend the Tennessee foursome's reputation. The laggard tempo and coarse guitars of the CD's opener, "The Window Song," will grab the rock-touched ear (as will the punchy "Strange"), and the following tune, "Mary," snags old-timey country touches with its acoustic ramble and woeful love tale. The V-Roys are great handlers of multipart vocal harmonies, often to offset Miller's occasional desperate-leaning vocal yearnings. What pops up throughout All About Town is a kind of radio-dial-wide array of music that might've all come from the same highway, stretching from an urban alt-rock mecca to a faraway rural sprawl of open space, weekend hoedowns, and retro riffs. Produced by Steve Earle and Ray Kennedy--a.k.a. the twang trust--this episode in the widening of roots aesthetics is blessed with the marks of Earle's earliest works as well as his most recent. --Andrew Bartlett

4 out of 5 stars 8 Years Later.......2006-10-20

I picked up a copy of this CD -- my 2nd by the V-Roys -- @ a sale. What a great bargain! The V-Roys have that alternative sound that's too rocky for country and too rocky for country. Anthem rockers like "Arianne" & "The Window Song" have great hooks and a slow burn. "Strange" is a classic blast with great guitar lines & the simple lyrics, "She's mine. She's strange. She's long. She's kind. She's mine!" "Over the Mountain" is short & sweet that thunders with a Celtic flavor. "Virginia Way/Shenondoah Breakdown" is an acoustic folk track that bursts into a hoe-down. "All About Town" is a set that sounds good 8 years later, well worth seeking out. Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Roots-rockers' studio swan-song.......2002-12-11

This Tennessee band never quite lived up to the hype, notably that of their producer, Steve Earle. Still, they left behind a legacy of two studio albums and a live disc that shows off their blend of twangy country and power-pop. This, their second studio album, finds original lead guitarist John Paul Keith replaced by Mike Harrison, and their comfort in the studio increased. The result isn't so much slick as polished -- with vocals that provide both blue harmonies on the country tunes and sunnier backings for pop songs.

The V-Roys spend their country, folk and rock influences discretely, like the acoustic country of "Mary" and the full-blown 12-string chime of "Amy 88." They lean heavily on their rock roots (as they did live on their follow-up swan-song, "Are You Through Yet?"), mixing layers of electric guitar, ala Matthew Sweet, with chiming Rickenbacker, reverb, and stacked vocal harmonies. "Hold on to Me" crosses electric and acoustic with a soulful melody that harkens back to the '50s.

Despite the catchy hooks, well-blended vocals and heartfelt playing and production, there's still something faintly unengaging about this album. It's like the razor-thin difference between a hit and an alternate take -- all the elements are there, but the essential "it" seems just out of reach.

3-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good - Definite Steve Earle Influence.......1999-11-21

Since I first learned of Steve Earle with his "I Feel Alright" album, I have been interested in anything associated with his music. This album is worthy of his name. It is an eclectic mix of of catchy tracks that does not where out its welcome as the tracks build off of each other. It is a very impressive album that has me anxious for their next even if Steve Earle is not the producer. I expect big things from them in coming years.

2 out of 5 stars Not that good.......1999-08-07

I got this album because of the V-Roys connection to Steve Earle. I saw them open for him a couple of years ago. I was very disappointed in this album. It is much too poppy, almost like the Smithereens or something. The music is just bland, without any type of edge or attitude. I'll stick with Steve Earle.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite of the year!.......1999-07-24

This is the best of the year for sure! I don't make a road trip without it. The record defies all labels. There is something on it for every type of music listener - Rock, Country, Pop, Bluegrass. Love it!!

5 out of 5 stars Lesley rocks!.......2005-09-03

My Mom introduced me to the joys of Ms. Gore, as she bought all her LP's in the 60's. The one I remembered most was, "All About Love" I still own these awsome LP's and then some. I have nothing but praise for these 2 magnificent collections. These two LP's are Les at her best. The sound is great (even on vinyl), and the covers are beautiful. I highly recommend this CD, you could not possibly be let down. Key tracks to listen for (for me at least), "A Girl In Love", "Before and After", "Any Other Girl", "Only Last Night", and my personal favourite, "I Don't Care". If you have the chance to grab up the BEAR box set, go for it, as there are countless joys to discover by Lesley that haven't made it to "2-fer" sets.

5 out of 5 stars Lesley at her best.......2002-01-17

How ironic that 40 years after the fact, the world is finally figuring out that Lesley Gore is one of the most important girl singers in pop history and that her albums are treasure troves of intriguing songs intricately arranged and impeccably sung. Mercury's decision to market "the amazing 17-year-old" as a character out of a teen magazine proved both a stroke of genius and a terrible mistake. How was anyone serious to know that albums titled "Sings of Mixed-Up Hearts" or "Boys! Boys! Boys!" or "All About Love" were not about a hit or two and forgettable filler but track after track of rich, ahead-of-its time music. All that double-tracking on the early hits also made it seems as if Lesley had a small voice when the truth is she was always a vocal powerhouse. And, as "It's My Party" proved, she had incredible on-keyness, terrifically steady intonation far beyond the capabilities of most singers, an intriguing aftervibrato and the ability to literally sing anything. Her pronunciation also is remarkable--every word crisp and clear. Wow, what a talent and it's taken FOUR decades for people to wake up to it. Today Lesley is at the peak of her powers, looks terrific and still has that charismatic personality and set of brights that sets her so apart from run-of-the-mill performers. It's lovely to think that now at last she is getting the recognition she long deserved as an artist rather than just an unbelievably consistent hit maker (boy did she make the money for Mercury!). If you look at her chart history it's quite amazing. These two albums are her best and should not be missed.

4 out of 5 stars Some of the best 60's records you probably never heard........2001-04-09

Everyone knows the hits. The amazing thing about Lesley Gore's albums was how much good stuff enveloped the singles. While most of her contemporaries, especially at Motown, loaded their albums with filler, Lesley, Quincy Jones, arranger Claus Ogerman (mostly) & co. lavished care on ALL tracks, as if they ALL were going to be the next single. And these two albums, while containing her lower charting hit singles, are definitely her best. And they're together on 1 CD. "My Town..." is her last full album with Quincy Jones at Mercury and contains Lesley's own song "A Girl in Love" with the smokey verses in a minor key (where Les does her own call and response--or maybe something deeper) that jump to a major for the chorus. Also here is Phil Spector's arranger Jack Nitzche, who turns "What am I Gonna Do With You" into a dense wall of sound classic (he was the song's original producer); "No Matter What You Do" is the hardest rocker she ever sang on, and Van McCoy's beautiful "Before and After" is given the definitive treatment here."...SINGS ALL ABOUT LOVE" is the album she made with producer Shelby Singleton, but its the unique arrangements by Alan Lorber that make this a classic. Is there a better Lesley Gore record than her own "I Won't Love You Anymore (Sorry)" ? With her ballsy vocal and Lorber's strings swirling behind her like a tornado, this 2 minute kiss-off is a beaut and was probably TOO good to be a major hit. Her sexiest song has got to be "Start the Party Again", while her raunchiest is the Valerie Simpson-Neil Ashford tune "I Just Can't Get Enough Of You", and dig that King Curtis-like sax break. In between are the gems "Only Last Night", "With Any Other Girl", "I Can Tell"(her last "girl-group" record), and the jazzy "We Know We're in Love". And how about what's done with Spector's "To Know Him Is To Love Him"? The sound quality here is very good as were the original Stereo pressings. And these peformances were all cut "live" in the studio, which give these recordings that extra zing!

5 out of 5 stars It's Still Her Party.......2000-12-16

This collection of songs by Lesley Gore is a "must have" for her millions of fans! From her hit tune of "My Town My Guy and Me" to her terrific version of "Things We Did Last Summer" Lesley proves once again that she was one of the very best female vocalists to emerge from the 1960's. The CD collection also features "You Didn't Look Round" and "Just Let Me Dream" two Gore goodies that allow Lesley to really cut loose. Lesley was obviously never afraid to try new music styles, and this CD is a perfect example of that. Maybe more of her Mercury albums will be released on CD in the near future. MORE GORE!

5 out of 5 stars Lesley Gore Sings For Girls in Love..........2000-12-15

1965 was a great year for Lesley Gore. She started the year winning nearly every music industry award for Best Female Vocalist, including Cash Box, Record World, Music Business and 16 magazines, and she was appearing on movie screens in three films, including the legendary live rock concert, "The TAMI Show." Her first edition of "Golden Hits" was a mainstay on the LP charts, and Mercury Records kept her busy in the studio when she was on hiatus from her sophomore year at Sarah Lawrence College. The first fruits of her Hollywood and New York recording sessions with Jack Nitzsche and Quincy Jones were found on the album from those dates, originally titled "Lesley Gore Sings for Girls in Love," but re-titled "My Town, My Guy and Me," when the single of the same name leapt into the top 40. "My Town, My Guy and Me" showed a maturing Lesley Gore at the crossroads, straddling girl group pop (Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Barry's sublime "What's A Girl Supposed to Do?"), standard Gore betrayl angst ("You Didn't Look 'Round" from "The TAMI Show")and runaway rage ("I Don't Care"). But the album also found her triumphantly belting solid West Coast Rock ("No Matter What You Do"), a Jackie DeShannon-Jack Nitzsche rhythm ballad with Barbara Lewis' name all over it ("Baby That's Me") and a trio of sophisticated uptown Brill Building gems, including the definitive version of Van McCoy's "Before and After." Gore's own "A Girl in Love" is another highlight of that set, which presaged her brilliant late 1965 single, "I Won't Love You Anymore (Sorry)," co-written with her brother, Michael Gore, and widely considered one of her classic tracks by rock historians. That single, produced by Shelby S. Singleton because Quincy Jones was scoring film in California, was featured on the second Gore album cut in 1965, "Lesley Gore Sings All About Love," which hit record stores the very last week of that year. In a series of New York City studio sessions, Lesley sang with the cream of Nashville musicians and Manhattan players, for this seamless, smooth collection that saw her step all the way out of the echo chamber and double-tracked vocal sound on every single song. She had been singing in nightclubs for a couple of years now, and the updated sound was as becoming as the new short haircut. The chart hits, "We Know We're in Love" and "Young Love" (#50 in the US, but top 10 in Canada and Australia), are the best-known cuts, but the incendiary "With Any Other Girl" and sexy "Only Last Night" are the real highlights. And Lesley's readings of Nat King Cole's "Too Young" and "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" are sheer vocal genius. Yes, Lesley Gore sang for girls in love in these two great 60s LPs, now on one CD, but thank God for us boys, we get to listen, too...

5 out of 5 stars The Best Mistake I Have Ever Made.......2003-04-01

The first time I heard this album, I was told it was the band Golden Smog. I purchased the so-called Golden Smog album and not one tune was familiar. After months of researching, I finally found out that it was the V-Roys. I bought the album immediately and it has been a regular in and out of the car ever since. Imagine The Replacements as a country band and you can get a smidget of a taste of what the V-Roys are about. I am extremely lucky to have seen them perform live before they broke up. The scene was perfect...small bar...loud music...and a Replacements cover. I highly recommend this album and everything else by them.

5 out of 5 stars Another sadly overlooked classic.......2001-09-21

Being a fan of "Alternative Country" music can be depressing (no pun intended to the magazine). There are so many great albums that go out of print and so many awesome artists that lose their record contracts. The V-Roys's "All About Town," is yet another first rate musical effort that has been buried by the indifference of record buyers who only seem interested in the next Garth Brooks or Shania Twain offering.

"All About Town" features a variety of sounds, from Beatles-esque rock to rockabilly to country to folk to even a touch of Bluegrass. They can sign lighthearted songs about girls ("Mary," "Amy 88", "Arianne" and "Sorry Sue") good rocking tunes ("The Window Song," "She's Strange") and even give you a good old fashioned history lesson ("Virginia Way/Shenandoah Breakdown"). Why talented artists such as this have such a hard time finding a larger audince is beyond me. Nevertheless, "All About Town" is a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars never a dull moment.......2001-02-25

I bought this CD the day it came out over a year ago. I thought this morning I would look to see how others felt about this album. I am very surprised to see only 3 reviews therefore I must write about it. This is truly a great album to listen from the first song to the last. No need to use the skip button on the remote just sit across the room and be entertained by the amalgam of sounds these gentlemen produce. This is a CD even a R&R wife can love from the first listen. My wife does not like twangy music but she loved this CD from the first time I played it for her. Look into 6-String Drag's "High Hat" which was also produced by the Twangtrust. It was released the same day as "all About Town" and also is very hard to categorize.

5 out of 5 stars A refreshing cocktail of American musical forms.......2000-11-01

If you took Southern rock, alt country, a little alternative rock, a little bluegrass and poured them into a cocktail shaker, then shook vigorously for a few minutes and poured the whole thing into a highball, when you lifted the glass to your lips, you'd be about to drink down the V-Roys. Obviously these guys are kindred spirits with producer/mentor Steve Earle, whose own albums show the same reckless disregard for musical bondries. From the loud, grundgy guitars that open "The Window Song" to the alt country twang of "Virginia Way/Shenandoah Breakdown," this album rocks its way across genres. Although we have one more album on the way from these guys, they have officially split up, so this probably is the bands greatest moment on record. The songs are all solid, and the album's diversity from track to track is surprising and refreshing.

5 out of 5 stars Simple southern rock that sounds great.......2000-03-19

It is too bad that the V-roys split up in the fall of '99. I have seen them 6 times and they are incredible live. This CD is their second effort and it is a bit more refined than their first (Just add ice). The songs are catchy, with a great southern rock sound that retains a simplicity that makes it unique and energenic. It is really a good CD, worth buying.
