More potpourri than unified high concept, the fourth installment in the Pure Moods series nevertheless provides an interesting collage of acts associated with techno, ambient, alt-pop, and New Age genres. For some listeners, that means the transition from the rhythmic mystical-ethereal vibe of the first four tracks (from Enigma, Mythos, Delerium, and Sarah McLachlan and a splendid piece from Balligomingo) to a trilogy from New Age romanticists ( Secret Garden, Yanni, and pianist Jim Brickman) may seem a little disjointed. Ditto for the segue from George Winston's impressionistic 1980 solo piano piece, "Sea," to a Steve Reich-like minisymphony from Moby). And the concluding Afro-Celt Sound System track, a spirited, mandolin-driven piece with Peter Gabriel on vocals, is a stylistic island unto itself. Still, most fans of easy-listening contemporary music (particularly the adventurous ones) should find this an agreeable assortment of music from artists who infuse their craft with stronger-than-usual spiritual and emotional subtexts. --Terry Wood

Another Great Edition in a Great Series........2007-03-31
You got to hand it to Virgin Records. The PURE MOODS sreies of discs has been extremely sucsessful. They have been able to allow mood music gain a very wide audience without being too Way Out New Age or too commercial. This is the fourth disc in the series and it scores big like the others ( although #2 is my favourite). This disc has eighteen tracks, and a lot of them are under four minutes in length. But that does not mean they are filler.
A lot of reviewers gripe that the series is losing its edge and is catering to public appeal. Any compilation will never satisfy everybody. Criticisms range from "heard these songs before" to "too much piano" to "the same old artists". Remember this is music to put you in a certain mood of relaxation or peace or whatever. It is not to be taken too seriously. I for one enjoy having this music playing whether I am resting, working or enjoying company with friends.
There are some stunning tracks. I love the first four songs which set a great mood. I know SILENCE by Delerium and Sarah McLachlan is on many chillout albums but it is still an amazing performance and her vocal is overwhelming! If I do have a mild criticism of the album, it is that from Track 5 onwards the music does seem stripped down apart from one or two exceptions. Maybe a different playing order would have helped. Tracks 5-9 are pleasant to listen to but do tend to be similar in arrangement and tempo. Track 10 livens things up with Yann Tiersen's LA VALSE d'AMELIE but it is a short track. The Moby track on the other hand is too long and monotonous and sems very out of place here. The next track, however is a gem. Rachel Portman's theme from Chocolat is very beautiful and delicate. This and SILENCE are the two tracks I listen to the most. The album does sag until near the end. McLachlan's ANGEL is a little dull. Seems like it has been on the radio a lot but I do not listen to radio so it is new to me. B-Tribe's version of SHE MOVED THROUGH THE FAIR is just wrong. Coming from Ireland, I have heard so many wonderful versions of this song that could have been included. This track has a vocal that seems to drag the whole song down and the music seems to merge different musical elements without sucsess. THIS LOVE and RIVER OF STARS could be the same song. However the former is too long. Thankfully the last track lifts the spirits. WHEN YOU'RE FALLING has the Afro-Celt Soundsystem perfoming with guest vocalist Peter Gabriel and it adds a much needed oomph to close the album. This great song had the worst possible luck in succeeding because the very original video had to be pulled soon after it was released in August 2001 on account of the horrific events on 9/11. I will not go into any detail but you will find the video on You Tube and you will understand why it is rarely shown after watching it.
Hope to review the other mood albums soon. Times are listed below with song title listed first:
1. November - Mythos 4.58
2. Purify - Balligomingo 4.14
3. Shadows in silence - Enigma 4.19
4. Silence - Delerium feat. Sarah McLachlan 6.34
5. Song from a secret garden - secret Garden 3.31
6. One man's dream - Yanni 2.45
7. Devotion - Jim Brickman 3.36
8. Fields of gold - Eva Cassidy 4.42
9. Garden of eden - Govi 2.54
10. La valse d,Amelie - Yann Tiersen 2.00
11. Sea - George winston 2.41
12. God moving over the face of the waters - Moby 5.45
13. Main titles from Chocolat - Rachel Portman 3.08
14. Angel - Sarah McLachlan 4.28
15. She moved through the fair - B-tribe 5.00
16. This love - Craig Armstrong feat. Elizabeth Fraser 6.18
17. River of stars - Paul schwartz 4.03
18. When you're falling- Afro-celt soundsystem feat. Peter Gabriel 5.14
P.S. Check out some British Chillout compilattion albums if you can. There are some amazing artists that you do not hear about in the USA like The Beloved, Kinobe, Groove Armada, The Chemical Brothers, Royksapp, Everything But The Girl, Goldfrapp, Zero 7 and many others.
Very happy.......2007-01-16
I use this cd for my yoga practice, it's wonderful.
Highly recommend.
Another Editorial Review.......2006-11-06
"Apparently the only mood that matters is one of pensive melancholy. Nearly every track on this addition to the series is set in a minor key. Some are played solo, like George Winston's new age relic 'Sea.' Some are crammed with odd instrumentation, as in the briefly startling last section of Yann Tiersen's 'La Valse d'Amélie.' Some have entire orchestras sawing away. There are ambitious works like Moby's 'God Moving Over the Face of the Waters,' whose attempts to marry grandeur and minimalism are somewhat undercut by the monotony of a cymbal sample repeated too predictably. There are vocals, the best being the late Eva Cassidy's breathtaking treatment of Sting's 'Fields of Gold.' And there are yawners, such as Yanni's 'One Man's Dream,' which he may, in fact, have recorded while asleep, or 'This Love,' sung by Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins over a groove that suggests the tread of a drugged somnambulist, and Govi's 'Garden of Eden,' which sounds way too much like 'Chim Chim Cheree' to take seriously. And yet, all of it creates the same gray impression -- which, of course, is the point, in which case credit must be paid to those who selected and sequenced these performances. Will upcoming installments offer some variety -- a hap-hap-happy compilation, for instance, set in major keys, with handclap rhythms and smiley vocals? ~ Robert L. Doerschuk, All Music Guide
AWESOME!.......2006-09-06
If you are looking for meditation or tranquility from daily stress I recommend not only this CD, but the entire collection. I have all the Pure Moods collection and keep buying more New Age music. I feel I've invested my money in good music. I listen to pretty much anything from soft music, Rock, Salsa, Calypso to Dance-Techno music, but when I don't feel like listening to loud music, I listen to these CD collection, specially on a Sunday to reconnect with relaxation to start another heavy woking week. Also, if you like gospel, I'm sure you'll love these even though is not quite gospel music. You just reconnect yourself spiritually in this material world.
The latest and best Pure Moods CD.......2005-07-16
I am enjoying all of the Pure Moods CD's 1 to III and looked forward to getting album when it finally was released. This CD continues the superb unrelenting new age/tribal fest that in this CD is exemplified with some beautiful golden oldie songs like Eva Cassidy's 'Fields of Gold' that is a legendary song to lay down to and relax. Delerium's 'Silence' featuring the enchanting supple voice of Sarah McLachlan is wonderful. She also sings her hit song 'Angel' that would be a fitting burial song at a funeral. Enigma's 'Shadows In Silence' was my pick of the album, a ambient instrumental that relaxes you immediately. This is a must for fans of new age music who like a splash of many artists on 1 CD.

This show from September 16, 1990, the second night of a six-show Madison Square Garden run, catches the Dead in a period of transition. Brent Mydland had passed away less than two months earlier and former Tubes keyboardist Vince Welnick had made his Dead debut a mere 9 days before this show. In addition, pianist Bruce Hornsby began his tenure as a semi-regular member the very night before. As you might expect with all of the new blood, the band sounds a bit tentative feeling each other out, but when they are comfortable, they cook. Welnick is still finding his way through the songs and experimenting with often-harsh sonic textures, though for some reason he remains prominent in the mix (and you thought it was just your seats!). Hornsby, however, is the real star of this show, blending in beautifully and tastefully on acoustic piano and bringing out the stateliness in many of the Dead's tunes. Hornsby finds the ragtime in "Tennessee Jed," lends firepower to "Samson and Delilah" and "I Need a Miracle," and spruces up a number of spontaneous creations. Jerry Garcia clearly feeds off Hornsby's playing and responds energetically. Unfortunately, their little musical love affair didn't last very long, as Hornsby's appearances became more sporadic until he left for good in the spring of 1992. This document makes you wish their partnership had gone further. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
Worst in the series. .......2005-12-24
I don't really have much of a problem with the Dead releasing concerts from this era; even though most of the shows they played around this time really weren't all that great, there are still some really awesome ones that deserve a release in this format. However, this concert definately isn't one of them. Vince doesn't seem to know what he's supposed to do wtih most of the songs... and his volume's turned up, so the listener has to endure his fumbling all over all three discs. The rest of the band seems really worn out and confused, which makes sense; they had just lost Brent, who had been playing with them for more than ten years and was at that point an integral part of their sound.
I suspect that this is one of those concerts released as a DP because of "historical value." It was, after all, one of the first concerts without Brent in the picture. Unfortunately, the band doesn't seem to have adjusted to the lineup change quite yet. If you want to hear a great concert from this approximate era, try Dick's Picks 17. Just whatever you do, stay far away from this show. It is completely unparalleled in its suckiness by any other volume in this series I've heard so far (and I've heard a lot of them).
Not Worth Buying.......2005-09-16
There are simply too many other good shows by the Dead to spend too much time with this one. I disagree with the reviewer that thinks that the MSG '90 six-night run was really that special and agree with the reviewer who emphasizes the greatness of '89. In general, Welnick and Hornsby helped Jerry along there at the end but the awesomeness of the late eighties was gone. I went to about 70-80 shows in Jerry's last five years and didn't feel any of them to be the equal of Hampton '87, '88, '89, Greek Theater '87 & '88, Alpine Valley '89, Landover '90 or many, many others from Brent's final years. One certainly does wish that more East Coast shows from the late 80s, especially the Warlock shows, would be released on cd. In general, at this stage, one wants to hear the Grateful Dead at their most sublime, their most powerful, their most beautiful, and shows like this one are not that, at least not all the way through (I liked the Morning Dew on this both at the time and on this cd). Admitedly, there were only some shows that were like that, and even fewer like that when one listens to them 15 years later sober on a car stereo, but there were ones like that. Why not release those many, many wonderful performances on cd first. Sure, there are subjective determinations involved as just exactly which would make that list, but when I was on tour I recall heads being fairly unanimous as to the best shows of a tour, at least among those heads who were listening to the music. I am not one who has managed to hold on to my old bootleg cassette collection, so that I really appreciate the release of these on disc. I just wish there were more of them, especially from the best performances from the period when I was catching shows.
And the band winds down into that good night..........2005-09-02
Some lovely stuff on this album such as the He's Gone>No MSG Jam>Drums>Space section where everybody really shines. Morning Dew has some excellent singing and playing by Jerry. I Need a Miracle has some good energy and those songs make this CD worth buying. But much of this album is as sleepy as the Dead ever got while still managing to hold it together. Dick's Picks Vol. 9 is a good album, not a great one. Unfortunately it's a snapshot of a band in slow decline: Jerry's sounding creakier in the vocals (which I kinda like) but his guitar playing doen't have the fire he used to be capable of. Most disappointingly, the drummers often plod along in an almost perfunctory thud, whack kind of groove. They aren't really engaged for some of this album rather they seem to be cruising on autopilot. Keyboardists Bruce Hornsby and Vince Wellnick were fairly new additions when this was recorded and everybody was feeling their way about and so the music is a tad stiff at times. But that's understandable. Often though they inject some well needed instrumental enthusiasm to the proceedings despite some of the odd timbres Vince experimented with.
Overall, DP 9 isn't bad, but isn't essential either. The energy level just isn't high enough for my tastes despite some very good playing and moments of beauty. For me the nineties were characterized by a gradual decline in the bands abilities/energy until by '95 they were a pale shadow of themselves with Jerry barely able to play or sing. So while DP 9 is good, compared to their peak years of '72 to '78, (not to mention '80 and '81) it's kinda sleepy.
Pretty Good Gig -- Poor Sound.......2003-02-13
The gig here is pretty good, considerably better played than the gig on Dick's Picks 17, but the very muffled sound quality lets it down badly. I would have given it four stars were it not for the poor sound quality.
beautiful and powerful..........2002-09-17
Having read the negative reviews posted regarding this show, I just had to chime in with my take. This is a show which truly rewards repeated and careful listening...the tasty blues interplay on Little Red Rooster, Jerry and Bruce having fun all over the place, and, I don't care what you nay-sayers think, a beautiful and powerful second set. Morning Dew gave me chills the other day and the jam after He's Gone is wonderfully magic. Granted there are some weak spots, but that's all part of this show's charm. Sit down on a cool and windy fall day and enjoy this one!!!

Customer Reviews:
An exceptional British Violinist performs exceptianlly well!.......2007-03-09
This is my first CD by the British viloinist Vanessa-Mae and I found it to be outstanding. All three pieces were exceptional and I never tire of hearing them again. For the third track if you close your eyes you're at the 1997 Hong Kong celebration of it's return to China.
As I listened to the Violin Fantasy I was thinking of Arikawa Shizuka's 2006 Olympic gold medal winning figure skating performance - especially her Ina Bauer movements. I have heard various pieces from Happy Valley in other settings but the combination of them all was outstanding. I have heard segments of Butterfly Lovers but this is the first time I've heard it in it's entirety and magnificent it is.
I would also call people's attention to the written forward of the liner. It tells you a great deal about the determination and perseverance of Vanessa-Mae in the face of hostility if not down right racism. To face this as a young child starting out on her career could have been crushing and a tremendous loss to Great Britain and the music world as a whole. The person she encountered at the age of 12 seems typical of the British residing near a park in Shanghai that was supposedly marked no dogs or Chinese allowed. I am glad that she did not allow this encounter to deter her from realizing her dreams and bringing her outstanding performance to us.
I took this CD to work and play it on my computer as background music in my office. It is soothing and relaxing and I look forward to hearing it each day. I'll have to get another copy of the CD so I can play it at home on the days I'm not in the office.
This was a greatintroduction for me and I hope others will enjoy it as much as I do. It is going to be a popular holiday gift this year to friends and family who are classical music enthusiasts.
From Child Prodigy to Beautiful Swan .......2006-07-01
Simply put, Vanessa Mae is one great talent. She does not receive the attention she deserves because her music falls into the classical genre. Nonetheless, as an Ozzy, Queen, Zep, Doors, and Stones fan, I have to say that this young lady rocks solidly on the electric violin. Give her a listen now!
"Butterfly Lovers" not good as expected.......2005-05-07
I have heard of four versions of "Butterfly Lovers" violin concerto by Li-Na Yu with Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Takako Nishizaki With New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Siqing Lu and at last this title performed by Vanessa-Mae. To my disappointment, Vanessa-Mae's performance is neither loyal to original folklore nor deeply constructed. Li-Na Yu's recording still deserves the authoritive status. Takako Nishizaki probably can take second place.
However, other works in this albums are better.
Classically simple and intimate.......2004-06-19
As you've read from the other reviews, there are only three compositions on this album. The quality, spiritedness, and passion in each of these pieces leaves the listener wanting more.
I loved the initial novelty of Vanessa-Mae when she first came out; she provided a sultriness and edge to The Violin Player through her own compositions and renditions of traditional classics. Sometimes, that novelty can wear off... for example, with Bond.
What I love about this album, and her previous Classical Album Part 1, is that Vanessa-Mae gets back to the basics and really shows us that she is indeed a classically trained artist at heart. She is able to take these traditional pieces and (to borrow a phrase from American Idol) truly make them her own. She is not just some manufactured phenomenon.
The inlay of the CD is are essays from Vanessa-Mae that explain to the reader her intent for doing this album: to get in touch or pay hommage to her self-admittedly neglected Chinese roots. The sincerity in the writing is very refreshing and honest.
I love all of the 3 pieces: Butterfly Lovers, Turandot, and Happy Valley. Each are different styles which VM pulls off extremely well. Both Butterfly Lovers and Turandot sing with emotion and intensity. Happy Valley builds an image of joy and excitedness that surrounded the HK-China Reunification. In each song, you are truly able to sense and feel VM's passion and emotion that just sings from her violin. I have heard a different version of Butterfly Lovers, and this one is definitely better. It has VM's unique touch to it.
Truly a worthwhile purchase, and finest album from VM to date. I give it 4-stars because I wish she included more content!
Listen to the harmony of the violin and Chinese exotic music.......2002-05-24
This CD consists of three Chinese related works.Vanessa Mae, a young Chinese violinist did a great job on the CD.
1.Butterfly Lovers is based on Chinese folklore. This work has unique and exotic melody which recall China. Vanessa Mae plays delicately and sweetly and expresses the feeling of young couple of this story very well.
2.Violine fantasy on Puccini's Turandot is based of Puccini's Original Trandot and composed for violin. This work is well condensed of famous parts of Opera version. Vanessa Mae plays not only artistically, like other classical music, but also exotically, like chinese music. "Turandot as a violin music" is also interesting.
3.Happy Valley is the composition for re-unified hong Kong with China. This music is played by orchestra, violin and chorus. Compared with other two, this one places a emphasis on joyful aspects rather than artistic aspects. We can imagine the situation that not only musicians, but also listeners enjoy this music and celebrate the re-unification.
As a whole, the works of this CD give a impressive for the Chinese unique and exotic melody. Vanessa Mae plays the merody, expressing Chineseness and artistic aspects. Needless to say, this is one of the best her works. You must listen to it.

Only the second Dick's Picks set to come from the 1990s, Volume 17 comes from the middle of a six-night run at Boston Garden and boasts a prominent and playful Bruce Hornsby, who by this point had become fully integrated (along with keyboardist Vince Welnick) into the band's sound. The first set especially finds the band as tight and together as they ever were in the '90s. As an added bonus, the third disc adds a pair of strong tunes from a Greensboro, North Carolina, show from the previous March, including a marathon "Eyes of the World." When looked at in the context of the Dead's entire career, this date doesn't really stand out, but as a characteristic document of Hornsby's early-1990s tenure, it works just fine--and it's definitely a cut above Volume 9, the other '90s-era Dick's Pick set. --Marc Greilsamer

Boston Run.......2007-02-17
the Boston runs were always fun, and with Bruce Hornsby added to the mix it made the '91 run that much more memorable. he added such a great mix to the band especially in '91. the grateful dead had a sound in '91, and it was defined by the lead changing duo of Garcia and Hornsby. it is very fun to pay attention to.
best DP's out there - in terms of their magical abilities - are 3, 12, 18, and 20.
rock on. we are everywhere.
Definitely underrated.......2006-05-11
First of all, I agree with the Franklin's Tower review. This Franklin's is one of, if not the best I have heard, ever. I think there may have been a '77 show, I believe at the Swing Auditorium, that had the best Franklin's I have ever heard, but this is the best one that has been released on disc, in my opinion. The first set is really solid. The second set has a strong Terrapin, but there are probably better versions in '77/'78. The third set is quite good too, with a couple covers in there. All around a solid, highly unappreciated pick. Many people complain about there being too much Bruce Hornsby, but I think he does just enough filling in to make this pick good. He doesn't take away from Jerry. I think he actually enriches the performance. Highly recommended!
Franklin's Tower.......2006-03-19
I came across a copy of this pick's Franklin's Tower before I bought the CD. I was shocked to learn that it came from the 90's. Well hello -- 90's; I didn't think I would ever get into the 90s dead.
I play this song over and over. It is infectious -- I play it for my 3 1/2 year old boy, and he starts moving to the music also.
I think the reason why I was shocked to learn it came from the 90s is the rawness of some of the Garcia Guitarisms. He is as beautiful as he ever was -- and than as he creates this wonderful world of easy going sounds, he rips it all apart -- at this moment I am hearing the part; him and Weir take off with their playing.
I have never been to a dead show, but I can only imagine how intense the experience must have been. This song does it for me -- from a musical perspective. It sounds best when it is as loud as you can get it -- makes me want to invest a top of the line sound system.
Sound quality is poor.......2005-06-28
I was very surprised by the low sound quality of these discs. I have bootleg tapes from this period that sound cleaner and more up front. If this disc had better sound I would have given it 3 stars.
As has already been mentioned, the best part of this set is the filler at the end. "Eyes" is long and well jammed. And the "Samson" is one of the best I've ever heard. These two songs almost make up for an otherwise disapointing Dicks Picks.
Worth it for Bruce.......2004-06-16
90's Dead will always be regarded as so-so. However, it does showcase Bruce Hornsby's ivory prowess, and at times still shines. An excellent Help-Slip-Frank is as good a sampler as any. Although Jerry isn't as prominent as in prior years, Bruce takes up the lead and it does provide another sound for GD. If you are a Jerry-only fan, I guess you will not take to this release. However, as a musical history, it is certainly worth obtaining.

John Tesh? Where?.......2004-01-11
I ordered this album for a friend who loves Tesh but she (and myself who has never listened to Tesh) are very dissappointed. More than half these songs are sung by other people. When she orders John Tesh, she wants John Tesh. False advertising is this album.
John Tesh does it again!.......2003-11-10
I'm so glad I bought the new Deeper Faith II CD. I had John Tesh's last CD, A Deeper Faith and I loved it. I love singing along with his arrangements of the songs I sang in church. The thing I like most about the second CD is that it has some songs I wasn't familiar with but I love just as much as the first CD. Bring Me To Life and I Can Only Imagine are my favorites. I really like Pour Out Your Spirit and God of Wonders too. I noticed John doesn't sing all the songs but I've never thought of him as a singer anyway. He's such a talented pianist and arranger and I've always enjoyed every CD of his that I've bought. It's so nice to have music I can listen to with my kids and know it's upbeat and uplifting and I don't have to worry about profanity or inappropriate language. Keep on doing what you're doing John! I love it and I'm going to recommend it to all my friends.
A Piece of Garbage.......2003-11-02
Never before in the history of the world has a bigger piece of crap been released.
John Tesh is someone who regrets leaving Entertainment Tonight so badly that he needs recognition somehow. So what does he do? He makes crappy music for people who don't know anything about music.
A bit of a disappointment.......2003-10-30
This is the fifth commercially-released worship album put out by John Tesh's record label, and is the follow-up to Tesh's "A Deeper Faith" record. While some of the songs are good in the opinion of this reviewer ("Bring Me to Life" and "Pour Out Your Spirit," in particular) and I enjoy the messages presented in worship songs, this album falls short of the mark in two main areas.
Firstly, contemporary worship songs as a whole tend to be simple and repetitive; oftentimes, the same verse is repeated over and over again (here, on "We Fall Down").
Secondly, although this album bears Tesh's name, leading the purchaser/listener to believe that he is the record's primary artist, he only makes fleeting appearances on it. "God Who Gives You Hope," "My Redeemer," "You Will Know the Truth," and "I Am The Vine" are actually narratives performed by Tesh. Each one is less than 30 seconds in length, and is more of a segue than an acutal music track. And the one track on which Tesh actually does sing (the aforementioned "We Fall Down,") first appeared last year on the original release of his "Christmas Worship" record. The remaining musical tracks are carried by various worship artists, many of which appeared on Tesh's previous worship release, "Awesome God."
So, if you are planning on purchasing this record with the anticipation of hearing new worship music performed and sung by Tesh, you are likely to be a bit disappointed, as I am. If, however, you are an aficianado of contemporary worship songs and don't really care who performs them, you are likely to enjoy this record as much as the next one.

This three-disc set combines a second-set segment from a June 1974 show in Providence, Rhode Island, with the complete second set of a Boston Garden appearance recorded two nights later. The band was clearly in a playful mood that week, adding new twists to old songs and coming up with a number of dynamite jams out of thin air. Bassist Phil Lesh is particularly frisky and fertile on the Providence material. The collection begins with a distinctive "China Cat Sunflower" taken at an airier, slower groove than usual and bookended by interesting improvisational ideas. There's an exhilarating 15-minute "Spanish Jam" before they eventually encore with "Eyes of the World." The Boston show's second set opens with "Sugar Magnolia" and for the first time ever its "Sunshine Daydream" coda is broken off from its body and reattached at set's end. Also of note is a lovely "To Lay Me Down" and the far-ranging 28-minute jam that occurs after "Weather Report Suite," a ride unlike any other in Dead history. Throughout both shows, Jerry Garcia's guitar leads are as supple and fluid as they've ever been. Though it lacks the cohesiveness of one complete show, this 12th volume marks a true highpoint of the Dick's Picks series. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
Don t let this one get away.......2007-06-26
The Loser from Aug 20 , 1987 is among the finest interpretations of music i ve heard w my ears . Other moments in music are ' around ' and can be found and discussed due to the fine output and availability of music recordings to us , music fans . Beethoven symphonies . Electronic music a la Klaus Schulze , Steve roach and robert rich ( and Bass communion Steve wilson ) . Well .. But so .. what about this live show ( s ) from 1974 in the Dead s early 70 s universe in time .
Going back to music as being well done ( as in that 87 show i mentioned above ) , it is done here with a style and sound only heard by this band and in that time period . For me , personally , the band didnt come around to kicking a*s until about 1993 , then 94 and finally 95 ( That is my objective opinion ) , and many may think other moments were their favorite or more potent . This band leaves quite a bit of ' stuff ' or subject matter ' in any sense to discuss .
The 3 disc DP is fine . The playing quality on the first two discs is very tight & strong . But when you get to the third disc , pay close attention . After the nice Weather report Suite and let it Grow , the band slides down to jam that begs for open mindedness . The Grateful dead in 1974 had the best ( yes they did ) sound system on the planet . The best technology to amplify their sound - called the Wall of sound and its described in detail in a book called Grateful Dead Gear .
If you are able when listening to the 23 minute jam that percedes Let it grow , you can almost climb inside Jerry s mind , and think ' We got an excelent sound system .. let s take it to places we are qualified to prove its greatness ' . The jam flows into a Mind left body jam ( 6 minutes duration ) , then back into a bridge that would take the band into US Blues . After US Blues , a short tuning break and a 3.5 minute Promised land . Then without stopping a GDTRFB . Show closer Sunshine daydream . Encore Ship of fools .
Rest in peace Jerry . Thanks for leaving us with such great stuff
great jams.......2007-04-12
lots of jams on this one
discs one and two feature some classic improv
Garcia really rocks on this one
Simply fantastic!.......2007-02-17
I've got a lot of Dick's Picks, and a lot of Grateful Dead in general, and this one is really my favorite. (I should mention, by the way, that I am a fan of Donna when she is in tune, and this was one of her better nights. Ok, I'll admit it - for me, there are some Dead songs that aren't complete without her, especially "Weather Report Suite," "Scarlet Begonias" and "Lay Me Down.")
The best parts about this particular Pick are the energy, the singing, the recording quality and, above everything else, the profound beauty of Jerry's solos. Quite frankly, there are Jerry moments on this Pick that are as perfect as anything he ever did that I've heard. Some of these solos are so heart wringing and soul-touching that they'll probably be part of whatever flashes through my mind as I leave this world.
The Dead as a whole were really on during this show, and it's one of the shows that I would highly recommend as a newcomer's first taste of what the Dead were really all about.
My personal tragedy is that I never saw them. In college I had "Skeletons from the Closet" and I assumed that that was the G.D. It wasn't until the late 90's, when I rented a "View From the Vault" on a whim that I finally understood, too late, what they really were.
Luckily, we have enough taped music from them to wind it around the backside of the moon and back to earth six or seven times. Dick's Picks 12 is some of the best I've heard yet.
just exactly perfect.......2006-10-07
This features some incredible and wide ranging music. If you like China Cat Sunflower (and who doesn't), you'll never hear another one like this!
But, there's plenty of other reasons to buy this... top to bottom, this ones packed with gems. If you like creative jamming, this ones a must.
The best of the best. .......2005-10-16
I have listened to and own a lot of Dick's Picks and this is the best of all the volumes I've heard.
Disc !: The best "China Cat Sunflower" in my collection, hands down. Then, an incredible jam out of "Truckin'" that keeps going for about 20 minutes and then morphs into a sweet "Wharf Rat" and "Sugar Magnolia." Classic stuff. 5/5
Disc 2: Some of the best Dead songs performed damn-near flawlessly. "Eyes of the World" and "Scarlet Begonias" are a bit short, but they still have a distinct punch to them. "Seastones" may sound grating to some people, but I actually enjoy it and think it's a good transition between the end of one show and the beginning of another. "To Lay Me Down" makes one of its rare appearences and it's just plain LOVELY. The other songs are all good and well-played, but I wouldn't say this is a perfect disc. The fun of 6/28/74 is just about to get started. 4.5/5
Disc 3: And now, the moment you've all been waiting for: a 27-minute track simply titled "Jam." And "Jam" it does! Lots of themes are touched on... "Space," "Mind Left Body," "Dark Star," ect. What really makes this jam worthwhile is the fact that the band is so fluid and moves between the themes with great ease. Then we get perhaps the greatest "U.S. Blues" in Dead history, which isn't really much of a surpirse given what came before. A glorious "Sunshine Daydream" and fairly hard-to-find "Ship of Fools" close the set. 5/5
Conclusion: I think this pick can be summed up in one word: "epic." If you like the Dead at all, this should be in your collection. It's a very good summary of the crazy stuff that could happen in 1974. Sure, '77 and '68 might have been more consistantly excellent... but when they were on in '74, they were on much more intensely than in any other era.

"gentle, spiritual, hypnotic and ethnic all rolled into one".......2002-05-24
Remember "Yoga Zone:Music for Meditation"(1998), with the Windam Hill label, this was also in the genre of New Age...with artists such as Yanni, David Arkenstone, William Ackerman and Ravi Shankar ~ thoroughly enjoyed the series.
Higher Octave has gone one step further, with Yoga Zone presents "Garden Of Peace", featuring a compilation of musicians and composers from William Aura, Brainscapes, Peter Davison, Deuter, Face On Mars, Johannes Walter and Yulara sharing the gifts that will influence the acute hearing within your very soul. This is a good thing, music to reflect the sounds of nature and give you peace. You need time to meditate, relaxing from a stressful experience of the day ~ this album will do just that!
Each track is very different in texture ~ "NIGHT IN UBUD", notably hints of India, with a settling of joyful rhythms ~ "EARTH-LINK", tranquil with exotic simplicity ~ "RELAXATION", composer/artist Walter's brings a touch of renaissance with acoustic guitar solo, straight from a Lutheran hymn book beautiful refrains ring out ~ "FOREST V", selection from "Forest/Mountain", takes us high up in the clouds above the foliage, this composer had a five star album with "Winds Of Space" back in 1987 ~ "BLUE", electronic instruments send
vibes of soothing spiritual messages from "Mother Nature", bringing on calmness that sends you deep into a trance like mood ~ "HO DO!", from one of my favorite albums "All Is One"(1996) this selection of ocean waves with vocal is nothing less than hypnotic, touching on peaceful reflective inner thoughts, flute and joining keyboard echoes travel to a land of contentment that all beings search for.
This compilation is a keeper ~ looking forward to the next installment in the Yoga Zone/Higher Octave series "Ocean Of Peace", this is therapy in the ultimate sense.
