    What a wonderful introduction to classical music for your children this CD is. My children love it and I do too. We use it as bedtime music now (ages 4 & 7). However, if your children really tune in to the music it can be a bit unnerving in parts so we used to only listen to it at home or in the car......they had to gain a few years to become comfortable with it in the darkness of their rooms at night. Buy this!

    This is the first CD by the New Columbian Brass Band I have ever purchased, and I can't wait to own them all. This virtuoso group is a joy to listen to. Owning this CD is a must for lovers of brass band/turn-of-the-century music. It's a delight!

    Dorian Recordings should be given some kind of award for the most imaginative releases of not only great historical but great musical value. (DOR-93201) features the New Columbian Brass Band under George Foreman playing 15 pieces written from 1900 to 1921 and inspired by animals.

    So we have "The Teddy Bears Picnic," "A Morning in Noah's Ark," "The Two Little Bullfinches," "Turkey in the Straw," and even "Tiger Rag." The Noah's Ark number is replete with animal sounds by a guest expert and links up with an earlier Dorian release called "A Trip to Coney Island: Descriptive Overtures from America's Golden Age" (DOR-80153), which introduced me to a form of musical tone poem very popular around the turn of the century.

    This is one of those rare recordings that will appeal to all age levels; and scholars will be delighted to note that "Turkey in the Straw" is actually a Humoresque for Clarinet. Also anyone who has ever seen barnyard chickens in any old Warner Brothers cartoon will have already heard "Chicken Reel." A very definite 5 star Grabbit.

      Arthur Pryor was one of the most important stars and recording innovators of the early industry and thus deserving a place of prominence in any discussion of the acoustic-era. Archeophone is proud to include Pryor and his band in our Pioneers Series of reissues. With 25 stirring selections, a 24-page booklet with beautiful illustrations, and scholarly notes by David Sager, Echoes from Asbury Park is another top-notch Archeophone release.

      This has to be one of the best historic reissues on the market, because not only is it a beautifully packaged and remastered set of recordings by one of the greatest bandmasters of the 20th century, but is presented in such an organic and natural manner that it is a joy to listen to even in one uninterrupted sitting.

      David Sager's decision to program the disc as an afternoon concert followed by an evening concert was a stroke of genius. Not only do you get a sense of a day's entertainment in Asbury park circa 1913, but the pieces flow from one to the other as they were supposed to. Pryor was a sure hand at keeping his audience entertained, and his own mix of overtures, symphonic pieces, humourous pieces, solos and rousing showstopers guarantees your entertainment nearly 100 years later.

      The sound quality is ideal in every way, given that the recordings come from 1903-1913. All but one come from the Victor company, which made the best sounding discs of that era, and Pryor was an ace at recording his band. Excellent transfers with just the right amount of noise reduction make for surprisingly clear and detailed sound.

      The booklet is top-notch, as can be expected from Archeophone. Mr. Sager provides a short biography of Pryor, helpful notes on the indivudual selections, and all the discographical information one could want. Plus there are lots of period photos and reproductions of original documents.

      I recommend this disc without reservation to anyone who likes band music of any era, as well as to all historic recording buffs. I can't imagine how it could have been done better.

      Ace Moreland is a southern rock bluesman and was one of King Snake records finest artists. Moreland could play his Stratocaster with the best of them and his vocals had that certain smoky and gritty quality to them that made you certain you were listening to someone in his 60's rather than a mid to late 30 year old. Sadly, Moreland was called away this year, barely 50, and just starting to peak. He was a victim of lung cancer. Like many bluesmen that have passed before him, Moreland's music will be missed. While this early recording is not Moreland?s finest, it is a good one nonetheless mixing a little country flavor with the blues.

      I know Doug, and although at first I was a little tentative when I found out that this was going to be a "serious" album, I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised. The "River Anthem" takes me to the Guadalupe no matter what the weather is like outside! At first, I wondered how he could top "The Beer Song" or "The Butt Song", but this album has some instant Doug classics, and if you like Texas Music, I would definitely recommend this album.
