"...this charming effort by Elf Power bassist The Late BP Helium is as whimsical as the best Of Montreal."

Product Description
The Late BP Helium is the alter ego of Bryan Poole, who has spent the last eight years playing bass with bands like Great Lakes, Elf Power and Of Montreal. With the release of his first solo album, Amok, Poole finally strikes out on his own. Amok is all over the map: an intoxicating blend of 1970s-styled rockers, avant garde jams and straight-up poppy goodness. The album kicks off with "Belief System Derailment Scenario," a jagged, spastic horn-fueled attack, perhaps the album's weirdest and most sonically interesting track. "Bluebeard" comes next, a poppy, Kinks-inspired track filled with melody and charm. The album just gets more diverse from there, with funky sing-alongs ("Candy For Everyone") and extended Krautrock jams ("They Broke The Speed Of Light"), ending with a ripping post-punk rocker that includes a baroque, orchestral interlude.

5 out of 5 stars Before "Jaws" there was the "Doomsday Machine"..........2007-05-18

Steven Spielberg's Jaws has one of the most recognizable movie themes ever..the shark theme. But the "da-dum da-dum" music that made John Williams's career was already done ten years earlier...and is on this on this soundtrack.

The Star Trek episode The Doomsday Machine featured an ominous machine was the sci fi equivalent of a giant shark: a silent, big, grey behemoth that swallowed spaceships whole. The tension was established via the soundtrack by a simple "da-dum" theme. Like "Jaws", it would start slowly and softly and gradually turn up the tempo and the volume.

I think "Doomsday Machine" is a great soundtrack by itself. "Amok Time" is a terrific companion...its a completely different sound with a sixties pseudo-spiritual approach. But the fight theme is a classic. Both of these soundtracks on a single CD make this one a winner.

4 out of 5 stars Star Trek : Volume 2.......2007-01-17

Star Trek music is great if you like the television series. I grew up with Star Trek in the late 70's and 80's watching reruns and videos with my dad that he had recorded off of t.v. Two of my favorite episodes are featured here on "Volume 2". "The Doomsday Machine" and "Amok Time". These are classics of the Star Trek juggernaut. It is different just listening to the music. You understandably hear things that you otherwise would not hear while watching an episode. "Volume 2" sounds like it was recorded in the 60's. 1967 to be precise. What I mean to say is that when the music was recorded there were limitations as far as recoding equipment goes. It really sounds like a 1960's soundtrack but is unique in it's approach. As far as I know, this is not a remastered cd and I can tell. I wish they would have boosted up the levels and made it louder. A little more bass would make this a great sounding cd but don't let that stop you from buying it. It is a really great soundtrack that no sci-fi fan should be without.

5 out of 5 stars Good, classic Sci-Fi TV Music.......2006-01-06

Music composers Sol Kaplan and Gerald Fried are two of the better music writers for television back in the late 1960's. Both were famous for scores for other things (Kaplan for "The Spy Who Came In From The Cold" and Fried for "Gilligan's Island"), but showed that they could create music for a then new project: Star Trek.

Kaplan's score for "The Doomsday Machine" emphasized what was going on in each scene, underscoring how tension packed the episode was when it was made in 1967. (With the Special Effects that are available now, if they ever redo Star Trek, this is one episode that would seriously "amp up" the tension!!)

Fried, on the other hand, used his impressive Jazz training to show Mr. Spock in his "pon farr" state, and also to give the previously never seen before Planet Vulcan an alien atmosphere. Of course, the famous music for the fight scene between Spock and Kirk has been imitated often, but never topped.

An excellent CD for music and Classic TV fans.

5 out of 5 stars "Kaplan & Fried composers that felt the pulse of the series".......2002-01-08

Neil Norman(executive producer), just keeps cranking them out...take for instance "STAR TREK:ORIGINAL TV SOUNDTRACK("The Cage" & "Where No Man Has Gone Before")(GNPD-8006)...the legendary Alexander Courage shares his talent for scoring with his famous Sci-Fi opening theme, every cue has the Courage signature.

For this "Volume Two" from episodes "THE DOOMSDAY MACHINE"(Kaplan) and "AMOK TIME"(Fried), the creator of Star Trek Gene Roddenberry chose two veterans Sol Kaplan and Gerald Fried...both composers use of full orchestra was both rewarding and beneficial to the plot and substance of the series...although Fried's cues were darker in nature, gave us a feeling transformation into another time and place...while Kaplan's composition showed the audience what loss and despair could do to any human being...a highlight is "THE PROCESSIONAL"(Track 20) and "THE CHALLENGE"(Track 21), memorable cues that leaves one remembering that particular episode of the series...both composers hit the mark...dead on.

You might enjoy other Star Trek albums from GNP Crescendo ~ "Star Trek:Original TV Series Sound Effects"(GNPD-8010)..."Star Trek:The Next Generation:Encounter At Farpoint"(GNPD-8012)..."Star Trek:The Next Generation Volume Two"(GNPD-8026)...all worthy of a good listen.

5 out of 5 stars Tremendously inventive, totally surprising........2001-01-09

I was astonished to see this music actually available. Being somany, many years since the first production date, I would hardly haveexpected to find something preserved so accurately. This is, in fact aperfect recording. The music itself is really astonishing. Ratherthan an endless trundling out of the Star Trek theme, Sol Kaplan comesup with a collection of brilliant orchestral minatures in which hedisplays an absolute and total command of large scale orchestralwriting. I would guess his major influences would be Sibelius, Mahler, and probably Richard Strauss, but you would have to also certainlyinclude Edgar Varese and possibly Jacob Druckmann. Some of his ideasappear to spring from a probably uncatalogued collection of martialthemes, but his ability to paint vivid and powerful colours is likenothing I have heard before. Some of the themes reach really deep andwill endure for many decades to come. The way he ties in the StarTrek theme itself is very clever and elegant, making quite a trick inthe tail towards the end of the piece... What on earth has this dearfellow done since, or before? I am very, very impressed with this andwould absolutely recommend it to anyone, even classical music buffs.

5 out of 5 stars Six Stars........2007-04-03

I have not written a review in over a year but for this my silence will be broken. Usually, it takes a couple of listens for me to decide an album is good enough to put on my short desert island list. This disc made it by the end of the first track!

The Gamelan Galak Tika engages me on every level: polyrhythmic, harmonic, emotional, cultural, intellectual, micro tonal, physical, and just plain being in awe of the composer and especially the musicians. After listening to decades of extremely challenging music i have finally found something that stretches my ears in completely unexpected directions.

The above reviewer is right, run, dont walk! Not buying this CD is not an option. You dont need any more input. Its worth full price. Just get it.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2004-12-09

I originally picked up this CD because I dabble in using Gamelan parts in electronic music. This recording absolutely blew away my conception of what was possible in the realm of cross-cultural composition. This music is simultaneously perfect for long drives, dancing around your house, or inspiring creative work. For those who are intimidated by modern classical composition because it's often too "difficult" (read: boring), I would strongly recommend this CD as a perfect blend of creativity, serious academic work, and enjoyability (if that's a word?).

5 out of 5 stars RUN, don't WALK!.......2000-07-28

We frequently hear about the development of a "world music culture" in which elements of Western (Euro-American) and non-Western (everything that isn't 'Western') coexist peacefully Unfortunately, a good portion of the evidence we are given of this musical 'evolution' consists of either sophomoric pop-tune noodling using 'exotic' modes or instruments, or at worst complete and shameless misappropriation of the music of another culture in an attempt to gain some sort of artistic credibility. Thankfully, this recording represents the complete opposite end of the spectrum. With these two works, Evan Ziporyn sets a new standard by which all other cross-cultural musical experiments should be judged. I have never before heard such seamless integration of Western and Balinese instruments and ideas. Both _Amok!_ and _Tire Fire_ should appeal to gamelan enthusiasts, lovers of contemporary music, and rock afficionados alike. Bravo!

I'd much rather get a new of Montreal release than the Late B.P. Helium. His songs sound very tired and uninspired-- generic alt pop that's all been done before. The last tune on here was kind of neat. Overall, I was not really captured by the often dull struggle against lapsing into redundant simplicity that is the Late B.P.'s songwriting.

5 out of 5 stars THEIR MILESTONE, AND ONE OF THE BEST METAL/DEATH ALBUM BY FAR.......2006-07-06

This is one of those albums who would need a push forward! The band's milestone by far...but that's not all! AMOK deserves more space among the best metal/death album ever. Put it on your player and let it flow into your ears and brain..."The War Ain't Over!" is one of the best opener in metal music. It's so classically metal and then, all of a sudden, Taneli Jarva breaks in with his growling/melodical vocals. His lines and interpretation really give strenght to the songs! Of course his not a hell of a singer, definitely not in Dickinson, Tate or Kiske vein...but at the same time not as rough as Cavalera and C. His style's more into "deep vocals" but 100% understandable and most of all you can feel he's singing with passion! Music is never too fast, I mean is more heavy than death metal, but very powerfull anyway! PHENIX, FOREVER LOST and NEPENTHE just to name the best songs...but the whole albums just flow away and you would need more and more...Unfortunately Sentenced decided for a line-up change for the up-coming recordings and in "Down" there's no Jarva anymore as their former drummer was put in front of the mike!!! "Down" is a very good album...but just the biginning of the end in my opinion (Mr.Ranta cannot sing...)...you want more Sentenced material...look for "Love & Death" pals!
As far as I'm concerned the band does not exist anymore...what a lost for metal music!

'Amok' is the Scandinavian metal band's third effort.Their music had reportedly undergone some changes, because on 'Amok',they appear to be straight ahead rock&roll.Which,in this case is a good thing.Cuts like "The War Ain't Over","Forever Lost","Dance On The Graves" and "Golden Stream" show you what these guys are fully capable of.The playing and song arrangements are actually quite decent.Might appeal to fans of Hammerfall,Children Of Bodom,Nevermore and maybe Iced Earth.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting...Let's Rock!!!.......2003-10-01

4.5 stars. The production is great, the musicianship is refreshingly vital, and the songwriting is excellent. Even the EP "Love n Death" is exceptional, which is unusual considering that most EPs never reach the level of the main album. There are many sound samples laced throughout the album adding an epic grandeur to the overall feel. The lead and rhythm guitars shine on this CD, so if you like melodic/intricate guitar with variation in tempo, this is the CD for you. If you love great guitar, buy this album now!

5 out of 5 stars Totaly Awesome.......2002-12-27

Talk about money well spent. Here you get 2 albums for the price of one. Anyway its a totaly awesome and infectious album that will be glued to you CD player for eternity. Musicaly you have heavy iron maiden like riffs and death-doom like vocals from singer bassist Taneli Jarva. The energy is unreal and the songwriting didn't bog down in the depressive suicide style that started on the later Sentenced albums. The Love & Death EP included is a real bonus as it serves as an extension the Amok and it is pretty darn good....

5 out of 5 stars the best cd of sentenced!!!!!.......2001-03-16

I can't belive this cd hasn't more reviews written. this is the milestone of sentenced's career, when they departed from their caothic death-black metal sound, and incorporeted the NWOBHM feeling and structure to their music. the cd begins with the effects of a battle field, and then a bomb falls from the sky and exploited as the same time of the cresendo of the "war ain't over" song... for me one of the most spectacular intros in the history of metal!!!!!!, then every song is just perfect, but for me stands out "funeral spring"...is just breathtaking, with the wuah pedal efect of the bass guitar (taneli jarva is not only a great singer with his growlish death vocals, but an excellent bass player) you have to love this song. one of the best and most killer cd in my collection.
