I am not a huge Gwen fan but thought this CD would be fun. It is terrible. The second disc replays the same song 4 times in a row, each one a different "mix." Also thought the import would be cool and offer something different but was not impressed at all.

The Review of
DISC #1 Rating: ++++ 4 stars
As you know Gwen made a really big debut in 2004-2005. That's something definitely, with the singles like What You Waiting For & Hollaback Girl is on Billboard. The album itself is alomst perfect. Along the album you'll be so entertained by catchy-classic-mid-techno rhytym and music. The first four track, definitely you've heard them on the radio and watch the video on MTV. Bubble Pop Electric, her duet with Johnny Vulture A.K.A. Andre 3000 is pretty funny, espscially the part Gwen called herself "bubble pop electric chick". Luxurious which is the next single, well I think not really good as the singles before, but it's pretty Europe-techno-tasted beat songs. The other tracks seems try to catch Gwen's funny and pop-py taste of music, whether with old-techno (The Real Thing), or with semi-Chinese-modern-dance (Serious), or with a beautiful duet of peace (Long Way To Go). This album is definitely one of album of the year (Grammy's choice is right and I hope Gwen will win it on 8th Feb 2006).
Disc #2 Rating: +++* 3 1/2 stars
Much more catchy music...That's the right thing of the bonus disc. The remixes in this have really different beats than the original version. The Jacques Lu Cont's WYWF? Dub&Mix are really cool. Mix some dancefloor-beats, Japanesse, and ticking clock is really cool. Pretty catchy and great for album opening. The live tracks is no big, just some part in the songs Gwen's voice really weird. Her voice sounds like a cat screaming on the catwalk. But the live tracks still good, if you want to hear the other versions of the songs. The Hollatronik and Photek Remix are really cool. Modern dance beat and classy really mixed up.
The Last track is Dance Hollaback. Well, for me this is the best remixes from the album and the reason why you must buy this album. The beat is really awesome. Tony Kanal remixed this song into kind of black-retro and adding Jamaican-rap into it. really awesome, really makes you dance hollaback!
//After all this is a really great repackage album. Gwen definitely can present the taste of her music along with the great producers. This is a really worth collection, you gotte have it!//

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars What you waiting for?.......2005-01-01

Platinum blonde frontwoman Gwen Stefani is best known for the ska-pop sound in her band No Doubt. But for her solo debut, "Love Angel Music Baby," Stefani goes for a totally different sound -- bubblegummy eighties dancepop, a clubby, colorful, glitzy whirl full of Harajuku girls.

"What You Waiting For?" is the strongest single from here, where Stefani ticks off the seconds before launching into a danceable, self-addressed lecture: "Life is short/you're capable.../what you waiting for?" Stefani urges herself to "take a chance" while "you're still a super-hot female," all against her longings to get more fans in Japan.

"Harajuku Girls" is a kitschy ode to Japanese fashionistas (they get mentioned several times over the album), while the sugary "Bubble Pop Electric" with Andre 3000 is a goofy, sugary pop song. A few of the songs misfire, like interracial dating song "Long Way To Go," which becomes way too self-important. But mostly they revel in the sound of early Madonna tunes, with a new wave twist. There's also a Muzak version of "What You Waiting For," which is pretty worthless.

"Love Angel Music Baby" won't surprise anybody -- it's all in the style of the first single. It's sleek. It's sexy. It's a guilty pleasure, and it rarely pretends to be anything else. Basically it's not for anyone looking for high-quality music, but it's a fun diversion when you are dancing around your living room.

Stefani's voice isn't technically the best, but she can range from wispy to a throaty purr to a squeal. And her vocals get a pretty good workout here. The musical styles are more electronic than her previous work with No Doubt, taking on a more new wave sound. Think 21st-century Blondie, with a bit of funk thrown in.

The lyrics are simplistic in a dancefloor kind of way. They're meant to sound fun to the synth beats, not be deep -- "born to blossom/bloom to perish" are perhaps the strongest lines, as Stefani examines her own fragile popularity. Her sole effort at depth, "Long Way To Go" gets a bit too hamhanded. And it's Martin Luther King Jr., sweetie. Martin Luther was the guy who P.O.ed the Pope and formed the Lutheran church.

Gwen Stefani makes a fun guilty pleasure in "Love Angel Music Baby." It has light-as-air lyrics and poppy music, but it's worth a spin if you want something to dance to.

I just happen to get this during Christmas time and it is great. Madonna fans get this if you can find it because I know it is out of stock.

4 out of 5 stars Quick erratum to my previous review.......2001-03-07

My deepest apologies; I made a mistake in my "full" review of this item.

Tracks 13 to 15, though credited as being lifted from "Live Without A Net" in the booklet, are in fact the STUDIO versions of the songs, which brings the number of common tracks with "Anthology" up to 8, not 6 as I previously stated.

This leaves NOTHING from their live album! Now what other excuse do you need to grab it?

4 out of 5 stars Bad guys don't always wear black!.......2001-03-07

Made in UK in 2000, Serial# VSOPCD-322, Playing Time 75:28

This is the second compilation to come out featuring ANGEL(see 1992's "An Anthology"), this time to probably cash in on their 1999 comeback.

The compilation lifts tracks from all 6 of their early albums, including the live set "Live Without A Net". All songs are in full-length, and presented chronologically: you get to hear their musical evolution. The booklet credits track 16 as coming from "LWAN", but it's in fact the single version of the song, a studio recording for the soundtrack of the movie "Foxes".

I remember putting their first album on my turntable back in 1975: the album, just like this CD, opens with "Tower". It floored me, and if you've never heard early ANGEL material, it will floor you as well: rich textures, syncopated rhythm, scorching guitars, and vocals that are DiMino's trademark.

There are only 6 tracks in common with the 1992 "Anthology" CD, so this one is a nice complement, and I found the track selection to be a bit more powerful.

Don't base your opinion of ANGEL (good or bad) on what they sound like now: the current absence of Giuffria (both as writer and musician) makes a tremendous difference. The cover art shows them in white satin: an original look for an original type of music.

This disc will give you a great opportunity to check out 1 of my favorite bands from the late 70's.

4 out of 5 stars Better than most all the ordinary FF soundtracks.......2007-01-24

First of all, people seem to be overly critical of the choir. They say that it sounds out of tune or whatever, but this is only because they were recorded live. In Advent: One-Winged Angel, the same choir sounds totally incredible. The choir itself isn't bad, it's the recording environment that was not so hot.
That said, I can say that this is a very impressive two CD set, even though several of the songs I don't recognize. The music is professionally composed and arranged, and just goes to show that Final Fantasy music is proffesional level. The only cons are the lesser sound quality of being recorded live and the MC tracks, which can get to be a bit long. The way they keep talking makes me really want to know what they're saying. My favorite pieces are:
    1. One-Winged Angel: I do admit that the FFVII Reunion Tracks arrangement is better, but only because of the recording environment. This arrangement has a lot of cool new elements and an awesome sound. The only problems I see with this arrangement is the absent-minded microphone placement and a bit of background shuffling that is heard at one part. The shuffling is very quiet and you get used to it, but I'm just picky about these things. As for the microphone placement; whoever put one right next to the #%@$in' snare drum deproved the quality of the piece a bit much. The snare drum during the chorus is louder than any of the other parts, and the choir is already being a bit overpowered by the orchestra. This makes for a choral section that isn't heard well enough. Despite all these slight cons, however, this arrangement of the classic piece remains superb and awesome-sounding.
    2. Liberi Fatali: Same choir rant as before. This arrangement doesn't sound quite as good as the original, but it's not really that different, it's still an incredible piece.
    3. Melodies of Life: This arrangement is better, I think, than the original except for the singing. She sounded a lot more confident in the original. But aside from that, this song is a great classic.
    4. Suteki Da Ne: The original was quite a bit better, both in sound quality and in the singing. Rikki was nervous during the performance, it is shown by her incessant breath-taking in the middle of phrases and low confidence in her voice. However, the instrumentation does sound nicely different in some spots, and Rikki's singing is still beautiful.
This album is a must-have for any FF freak, and is better than most all the ordinary FF soundtracks. Don't miss it.

    5 out of 5 stars I love this CD........2004-02-23

Firstly, Mr. Gibbs -- why would anybody buy this if they haven't played Final Fantasy games?

Secondly, this is an amazing CD. With the exception of One-Winged Angel, every track on this CD is (in my opinion) the best orchestral version of these songs ever done. And this is coming from somebody who owns Celtic Moon, Grand Finale, Fithos Lusec, and a smattering of Orchestral Game Concert CDs.

Do yourself a favor and buy this CD. It really is excellent.

4 out of 5 stars For those who wanna get their FF orchestra groove on..........2004-02-20

Final Fantasy 20020220 is worth buying. It is a great CD to listen to if you want to hear orchestrated versions performed live, mistakes and all. That said, let me point out everything that is wrong with the performances, and why I did not give 20020220 a 5/5. As partial as I am to Final Fantasy music, I must criticize the singing in this performance. In both tracks that featured a choir (Liberi Fatali and One Winged Angel) it seemed like everyone was trying to outsing each other, the tenors in particular would sing awfully loud, while everyone else was drowned out. The soloists RIKKI and Emiko Shiratori did a fabulous job, in my opinon. Others said that they sounded nervous, I do not agree. The actual performance by the orchestra was brilliant. I especially liked Liberi Fatali, One Winged Angel, and Vamo' Alla Flamenco. I wish I could speak Japanese, because 8 of the 25 tracks on the 2 disc set are nothing but the concert MCs talking about stuff. All in all I would like to restate that FF20020220 is worth buying, but maybe you should play some of the FF games to hear these songs before you listen to the orchestra version, all the more to appreciate this masterpiece.

4 out of 5 stars The Fantasy Continues..........2003-06-10

Nobuo Uematsu truly holds true to the Final Fantasy music legacy he himself set down beginning with the Final Fantasy Symphonic Suite CDs. Although I do have a few complaints, my overall take on this album is extremely positive. I'd say my favourite renditions on this CD are "Vamo' Alla Flamenco", lush, rich arrangement for orchestra (which truly is the greatest symphonic rendering I've seen from almost any game composer [thanks to Shiro Hamaguchi]) and the brass-graced Final Fantasy VI's "Terra" / "Tina" (which almost lives up to the Grand Finale version). Basically, every single song on these two CDs were mind-blowing with the exceptions of the two most crucial ones, "Liberi Fatali" and "One-Winged Angel". Okay, fine... I've got to give credit where credit is due, Liberi Fatali isn't THAT bad. It falters near the end though, but the primary complaint isn't the symphonic elements (or even the annoying snare [?] drum... *grrr*), but rather the supposed choir they assigned. Not very harmonic or in-tune, but I still give it 4-stars.
To sum it all up, all very nice arrangements with those little differences which make it all the more enjoyable. Cons? The choir voices and the MC segments (I don't speak Japanese, so my apologies if you do and find them entertaining).

4 out of 5 stars One of the Best (non OST) Final Fantasy works.......2003-02-19

There hasn't been a live CD since the ill-fated "Symphonic Suite" many years ago and now there is this - quite simply put a live version of some of the best Final Fantasy songs. The Tokyo Philharmonic is on every beat and adds alittle more to the Final Fantasy melodies. The MC's get annoying and their Japanese is very hard to understand. The choice of songs was superb yet there is no "live feel" as most of the songs are played just as you would have heard them on another Final Fantasy CD. All in all, this is one of the best and one can easily see by some of its few flaws to its real beauty - the epitome of Nobuo Uematsu's Final Fantasy work.

2 out of 5 stars disappointing to say the least.......2003-12-15

i'm a big fan of chilled ibiza 1 & 2 and thought this would be along the same lines, but not so much. it was basically just a few good songs mixed in with a bunch of bland chill out songs and some cheesy remakes. i regret buying this and would not advise anyone else to buy it.

2 out of 5 stars What the hell happened here?.......2003-10-08

I've only bought a few CD's that I ever regret spending the money on, and this is definitely one of them. The makers of Angel Beach should have quit after disc 1, which is full of the generic chillout tracks everyone's heard already.

Disc 2 is bland, with nothing really sticking out on it.

But my main gripe is disc 3. What the hell happened with this one? It seems the makers of Angel Beach didn't wanna shell out recording royalties, so decided to fill up half the disk with half-assed cover versions of chillout staples. Are you a fan of the Verve's "Bittersweet Symphony"? Moby's "Porcelain"? Coldplay's "Trouble" *and* "Don't Panic"? What about the Robert Miles classic "Children"? These great songs have been completely slaughtered in these elevator/karaoke renditions. If you have to listen to this compilation, save your money and download it.

5 out of 5 stars Best collection from commercials and chill out bands.......2003-09-08

This cd collection is fantastic! Not only do you get 3 cds with 16, 16 and 14 songs each, but the first 2 cds alone would be worth buying this set. The coolest tracks from zero 7, goldfrapp, blue states, jean jaques smoothie, mandalay, nitin sawhney are MUST HAVES for FEMALE VOCAL trip hop fans. Or if you just like some of the neat ambient electronic music you've been hearing on t-mobile or other commercials.
