About the Artist
Knol Tate is Askeleton, which began in 2000 during the break-up of his former band, The Hidden Chord. Using a free version of a certain unnamed audio program, he started putting together songs based on samples with simply-arranged keyboard and guitar parts paired with leftover Hidden Chord lyrics. The result? Cute little pop songs, which were compiled in two 2002 releases; Sad Album, a full-length CD on Minneapolis-based Blood of the Young Records and the Modern Fairy Tales CD/EP on New York's Alone Records.
In the fall of 2002, with the help of new equipment and software, Knol began work on what would become Angry Album -or- Psychic Songs. Enlisting the help of his brother Erin Tate (a.k.a. Ezilla of Minus the Bear), to record live drums, the Askeleton sound took on a new character. By focusing more on live instrumentation and relying less on the samples and loops he first used, the sound became larger and more rocking without losing the overall aesthetic of his simpler work.
Meanwhile, the live band had evolved from a duo to The Askeleton Orchestra, which consisted of members of End Transmission, Valet, Arsonwelles, Monarques, Vox Vermillion, and Motion City Soundtrack. Sharing the stage with such diverse bands as Radio 4, Minus The Bear, 12 Rods, Mark Mallman, 25 Suaves and Ela, the Askeleton live show was becoming as diverse as the new record was shaping up to be.
Enlisting the help of many friends, the album was put together in December '03 and January '04. Artwork, mastering and the video for the enhanced disc were completed. With tours and a quick follow-up to The Angry Album called Happy Album in the works, 2004 looks like a good year for Askeleton.
