Customer Reviews:
Not great.......2007-03-29
I can't give it less than 3 stars because I love the musical. However, this recording is less than spectacular. It sounds like it was recorded by some guy in the audience with a mono tape recorder. I was disappointed in the leads, also. They're trying to hard to sound like rock stars, which makes them sound rather cheesy. There are good moments, but if you're new to "Chess," go with the original concept album. You can't beat Elaine Paige and Murray Head.
Mate in Sweden!.......2007-02-07
Cold War Chess Championships came and went with the demise of the Soviet Union, as did the staging of Chess The Musical. This is to be regretted since musically and lyrically it is by far the best work from Abba duo Andersson and Ulvaeus, aided amply by Tim Rice. Oddly relatively unknown in Scandinavian, this concert performance, now well over ten years old, helped bridge the gap. It also managed to bring to the attention of producers that concert productions of this piece are perhaps the best way of bringing Chess to life in the post Cold War climate of the twenty-first century, and in particular relegating the old East West rivalry to the wings while focusing on the relationships-especially that of Florence and the Russian. Indeed they get all the best songs with the climatic finale You and I (reprise) making the hairs stand on the back of ones neck. The performance throughout are accomplished and enthusiastic, and the live performance and crowd responses add to the drama unfolding 'on stage'. One can only hope that Chess will remain in the consciousness of audiences and actors, producers and directors, as this CD is a perfect advertisement for a night of Chess at the theatre or concert hall
Not that good.......2006-04-05
Contains the extra songs not found in the "studio release" (with Ms. Paige etc.). However, the quality is poor and even the artists are no match to the ones in the studio recording. However, a must for Chess-aficionados.
An ok album........2003-07-02
I now own all the five major (legal) recordings of Chess; Original Concept, Broadway Cast, In Concert, "Danish" Complete Cast and Swedish cast.
All of these have their strenght and weaknesses, but as for completeness, one have to go for the Swedish or Danish recordings. As it is, I dislike the Swedish one, and the Danish is hard to get. That makes this Concert Recording the most complete of the remaining Chesses, but not necessarily the best sung.
I would not have bought this if it was not because I found it in a second hand cd store at a very low price. If you have the Danish album, you don't need it.
If you are a Chess virgin and cannot find the Danish album, chose this for near completeness or the Original Concept Album for best cast.
Avoid the Broadway Cast (extremely incomplete, though well sung) and the Swedish Cast (kind of complete, but otherwise weird and lacking the Chess spirit) if you don't happen to be a total Chess nut.
If you like "Chess: the Musical", you need this CD.......2002-06-28
I have owned, and have been a huge fan of, the original London cast recording of Chess since 1985. I love the mix of classical and rock stylings, and I'm also a major fan of practically anything that Benny and Bjorn turn out. However, I approached this album with some reservations. I know the original album of Chess backwards and forwards, so I was a little skeptical as to how a "live" version would compare to the studio version. I needn't have worried. For the most part, this is an absolutely incredible concert, with only one or two weak spots. It boasts an excellent cast, and a wonderful choir and orchestra. Of the main characters, there is only one returning member from the London concept album; Tommy Korberg reprises his role as the Russian, but my gosh........what a difference a decade makes! He was excellent the first time around, but now, Tommy injects his performance with so much fire, it will make your hair stand on end. The showstopping duet with Svetlana (Lena Ericsson)on "Endgame" is worth the price, alone.......just breathtaking. Not everything works equally as well, but as I said above, there are more "hits" than "misses". Having been a fan of the duo, "Gemini", (Anders and Karin Glenmark), I was thrilled to see them step into the spotlight again, this time as the American and Florence, respectively. I was, however, a little disappointed to discover that Anders' performance is not quite up there with Murray Head's in the original. Anders has the better voice, no doubt, but the conviction is just not the same; Murray was more convincing in the role, and I agree with another reviewer who said they didn't like Anders' histrionics. It's a bit "over the top" at times. As for Karin, she is a fabulous singer, (as is her brother.....don't get me wrong on that point....). My only problem with her is her pronunciation on a few words, but seeing how this CD was recorded in Sweden, released on a Swedish label, and probably really isn't intended for an American market, it's kind of understandable too. A couple of good things to point out in general; this CD finally adds two songs that were missing from the original recording; the gorgeous "Someone Else's Story", (beautifully performed by Karin Glenmark), and "The Soviet Machine", (part of which appears in the track "Opening Ceremony"). The reprise of "Merano" is a great addition at the end of the concert, with an ecstatic audience clapping along and cheering at it's conclusion. All in all, this is a great addition to your collection, even if you have the first recording. With variations in tempos, different interpretations of pieces, and two bonus songs, it's the same musical, and yet, not quite the same.

Customer Reviews:
Thank You Frank.......2006-04-02
Back in 1988 I was turned on to Frank Marino from my sister's boyfriend.Though their romance may not have lasted, mine with Frank has. This was the first Frank album I'd ever heard.Back in those days I was a straight up thrash/metal head, but something about this guy just caught my attention.Needless to say I've been roaming the planet looking for anything I could find from Frank."It's begun to rain"..timeless and classical, since that day I've pretty much owned everything Frank has put out.He is truly a "Guitar God" in my books. One day this man will be put into the "Rock & Roll Hall of Fame"..as the song states.Next to Steve Vai,he is truly a GOD!
V THE EMPEROR.......2006-01-17
THIS ALBUM WOULD FIT NICELY INTO THE IV THE EMPEROR SLEEVE-IT SOUNDS AS IF THIS WAS AN ELABORATION OF IV'S WONDERFUL GUITAR STYLINGS -A WONDERFUL BLENDIND OF SOUNDS AND AN IDICATION OF MORE OF THIS MAN'S PHENOMINAL TALENT.
A Marino must have!.......2003-10-31
An excellent album from the first to the last track. Aside from the great rockers for which Marino is so well known, check out "Look at Me" and "Lady" for insight into Marino's abilities on fronts way beyond the rock realm. The jazz runs are superb on these tracks. This is a must have, not only for Marino fans, but also for serious guitar players and listeners.
timeless.......2002-12-29
I've been a Frank Marino fan since 1975, and I recently listened through this "album" again. I first heard this work on vinyl, and have enjoyed my cassette until it's almost unplayable. This work really shows F.M.'s musical range, and is a punctuation point in his struggle with a record label that didn't know what to do with him. Highlights include Requiem..., In My Ways, Look At Me (perfect smooth jazz), and Try For Freedom. As a teenager eagrely lapping up every note, this seemed longer back then, but could easily go to market TODAY and compete with the current "heroes" like Vai, Satriani, Johnson, Morse, and Petrucci. I'm still turning people "on" to this amazing guitarist, and will continue to do so until all my aquaintances know his music.
memerizing guitar work for all ears to hear.......2002-07-29
A album to be reckon with never before have i heard such music that just blew me away when i first heard this album from the first track to the last are song to treasure.

This song is Awesome........1999-03-30
The song is a little weird at the beginning but it gets awesome. Buy the cd. I have recomended it to all of my freinds and they like it to.
Anthem leaves the crowd breathtaken.......1999-03-14
Upon hearing about the new album from silverchair, i was waiting for a remix of Freakshow, but they always seem to suprise and mystify listeners. Anthem for the Year 2000, the first single off the new album, is that and much more. With a classic silverchair sound, and a new edge consisting of new sounds and instruments, leaves one waiting and itching for the new album to come out sooner.
New More Industrial Sound--the boys do it well.......1999-03-11
Daniel, Chris, & Ben are back once again with a new sound--and it works. This single is the first off their forthcoming Neon Ballroom, and has a techno edge to it. It's a definite stretch from Frogstomp, but I'm still loving it. It can't be compared--it's got a sound all it's own, and i'd recommend it to anyone. Silverchair's changed their style once again, and they do this stuff well!
Silverchair - Anthem For The Year 2000.......1999-03-07
The new single off Silverchair's New Album called Neon Ballroom. The best song from Silverchair you will ever get. With lot off strange noises that you never expected from Silverchair. It is not grunge anymore, but alot cooler.

Buy this CD!.......2002-08-30
I bought this album about 2 months ago and have listened to it everyday. I'm a big Anthem fan, I have about 7 or 8 of their cd's, but this one is definitely their best. Even better than Bound to Break. On this one they have a different guitarist & vocalist(ex-EZO, I think). From the opening track it just starts rockin and doesn't stop the whole way through. There are no ballads on this cd. If you are unfamiliar with Anthem, they've been around since about '82. It's straight forward 80's style metal. They sing in Japanese and English in most of their songs. But that doesn't bother you when you're listening to it. You're too busy rockin.

B!+che5.......2004-01-30
No-talent posers that sound so whimpy and watered down. Yeah, they like to dress like they're "soooooo cool and bad" (lol!), but their music is no different than any lame @55 Nsync or BSB album. Don't worry, GC will be tossed aside in a year or so, just like all the other trendy fads. "The Young And The Hopeless" is what their loser fans are. Morons. 5h!+ like this never lasts, thank Christ.
good charlottes album.......2003-09-15
this cd is such a great album if you don't have it you should feel shame. the songs are catchy and have a great rythm. the lyrics typical of good charlotte are really different being deep and funny at the same time eg. today i screwed up again, i wasn't paying attention, i walked into the wall again, i heard you laugh and saw you grin, while you were sitting at your t-shirt stand, with all your cool friends they're really cool, I GET THE POINT!.but sung with their charismatic coolness. i have this album and love it. there are the occasional slow songs which are really sweet like the one they wrote to their mum and seasons.
This is an okay song, but..........2003-06-21
Musically, Good Charlotte are a pretty good band, but I don't understand how they justify ripping off the chorus to Jay-Z's "Izzo (H.O.V.A.)", one of the best songs he's made in a while. And at least Jay's song means something; THIS song makes no sense. However, this song is better than their latest song, "Girls & Boys", but that's not really saying much.
Anthony Rupert
Awesome CD.......2003-04-24
This is one of the best CD's i've head in a long time. it really shows the bands emotions on a lot of different subjects. every track has a different sound unlike some other bands whose songs sound almost exactly alike. their lyrics have matured a lot since the last album. The song 'The Anthem' is telling kids that they don't have to be like everyone else. they can be themselves and they shouldn't be ashamed. i'm hopin to hear a lot more from Good Charlotte.

Pretty good........2002-04-25
Personally, Bound to Break is a better album. Hunting time is newer, and MOST of the songs are a natural progression from Bound to Break. However, the overall FEELING just isn't there in a lot of the songs. The lyrical emotion Bound to Break had is nearly absent, making some of the songs sound, well, sterile. Sure, very very very impressive technically stunning lead guitar solos. Recording quality is excellent. You like 80's style Heavy Metal (ratt, scorpions, yngwie) and if you like Loudness, then you'll love Anthem. Be warned though, almost all the lyrics are in Japanese.
