Anthem of the Moon is quite a departure for Oneida. Their last album, the mind-blowing Come On, Everybody, Let's Rock, was the first great unashamedly retro rock & roll record of the 21st century, striking the stance of every hoary old dinosaur from Humble Pie to ZZ Top in its quest for dumb rock nirvana. These Brooklyn-born loft dwellers are a contrary lot, though, and in the year-long interim--during which they rereleased their very likeable Enemy Hogs full-length--Oneida have hung up their leather jackets, turned their backs on the bright lights of New York City, and embraced the arcane rituals and psychedelic reverie of paganism. If its creators are to be believed, the largely excellent Anthem of the Moon was recorded to tape reel amid a circle of ancient stones in the woods of New England. Beyond the rasp of their staple instrument, a wheezing garage-punk organ, the four members of Oneida tear roaring feedback licks from their instruments, drawl half-remembered mystic mantras, and pile on trippy, multitextural instrumental sludge till the bludgeoning "People of the North" and the hypertense two-key organ-thumper "Still Rememberin' Hidin' in the Stones" practically tear at the seams. Oneida might be going back to nature, but the monumentally heavy Anthem of the Moon sure ain't no picnic: this psychedelic reward is only for seasoned, brave sonic explorers. --Louis Pattison

The debut of the young, classically trained international quintet of sopranos Jo Appleby and Tsakane Valentine, tenors David Habbin and Geoff Swell, and basso Nick Garret offers up a familiar take on the crossover formula that has enriched everyone from genre pioneers The Three Tenors to Russell Watson and beyond. While their occasionally electro-pumped rhythms and youth-angled marketing shtick ("The world's first opera band!") may borrow a page from Opera Babes and Bond, it still manages to evoke the spirit (if not the letter) of its eclectic classical sources. And if the world hasn't exactly been burning for yet another dramatized update of Turandot's melodic "Nessun Dorma," The Pearl Fishers, or--for that matter--"Unchained Melody," Amici Forever's takes on the pop side of the crossover equation are indeed promising, recasting Alex North's "Unchained.." ("Senza Catene") and their reworked theme to the miniseries Band of Brothers("Requiem for a Soldier") in a successful, neo-classical light. If Neopolitan-shaded originals like "Canto Alla Vita" and "Vita Mia" sound like Josh Groban clones, their glorious harmonic vocal reworkings of Faure's "Pavane" ("Whisper of Angels") and Elgar's "Enigma Variations" ("Nimrod: Lux Aeterna") bristle with an ambitious sense of adventure that's missing from much of their crossover competition. Serious opera buffs may still quarrel with the daring "impurity" of it all, but if Amici Forever prod a few more pimply punters to peruse Puccini, won't it all have been worth it? --Jerry McCulley

Bought the album after hearing someone talk about the group. Thought the voices were okay (baritone was the best) but in some songs didn't blend properly. Selection of pieces was interesting . . . pop, classical, opera. Good album for "background" music.

I first heard it at a shop that sells English products. I thought it was interesting to hear and decided to get the CD for myself. I find the chorus very relaxing especially the last song which nearly put me to sleep as I am doing my homework. Amici Forever is a good CD to listen to when you have nothing to do or to soothe your wracked nerves.

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

I first came upon this CD when I was Music Director of a public radio station and I couldn't wait to get it on the air. The response from the audience (@ 53,000) was warm and grateful. This gal not only has a beautiful voice, but also the training to use that voice to its best advantage. There are no swoops and crutches here (like that singer... ah, what's her name... oh, yeah.. Sarah Brightman), just a pure, clear, steady (not a lot of vibrato) almost ethereal voice accompanied by a marvelous instinct for how and when to inject interpretation. The orchestration is great, too, not too much, not too little. Wow, talk about crossover! I hope Summer comes up with another CD soon. I've almost worn this one out.

Based on the information provided by Amazon.com the featured artist on this CD is Pino Palladino. He is listed as a "performer," along with half a dozen other people. So what does he perform, I wonder? Mandolin? Tuba? The title of the CD is "Summer," so that must mean all the songs are about June, July and August. But the reviewers all talk about a woman named Summer, who is apparently a singer.
More lousy product information from Amazon.com. Nothing new, but worth whining about.

5 out of 5 stars Cross over music that works brilliantly.......2006-03-14

I heard Summer on a sampler cd I got for free from one of the local bookstores. I kept coming back to her song and liked it enough to order her entire cd from amazon. Great purchase to say the least. She moves effortlessly between classical and pop selections. She has a way of working within the song and not overextending - meaning she doesn't showboat. Don't expect any american idol grandstanding at any time. What you get is straight up professional singing from a classicaly trained vocalist. It doesn't get boring thanks to a great mix of songs. The treatment of Sting's 'fragile' is especially nice. Not an essential cd but I still give it 5 stars because it's practically flawless.

Each of the composers here was a significant contributor to the Harlem Renaissance and by tune or text, these works document the coming jazz explosion. Many have never before been recorded.

For over 10 years, The VocalEssence Ensemble Singers and Chorus (conducted by Philip Brunelle) has presented an enduring series of concerts showcasing the talents of trailblazing African American composers. Now this wealth of music is available outside the concert hall through a series of recordings called WITNESS.

To say that this album constitutes a necessity for the classical music enthusiast would be a great big unarguable lie. It has nothing innovative to offer you as a listener, except for maybe the labelling of melodies such as "My Heart Will Go On" (that god-awful Love Theme from the gruesome film Titanic) as a worthy member of "Best Classics 100". But than again, every collection of things that does not naturally belong together, is bound to have at least one outcast where the connection clearly isn't based on anything but cost and sale-ability.

This might sound like the beginning of a CD-slaughter, or a snobbish review where only the Deutche Grammophone's recordings are meting my standards, but although I am fairly picky when it comes to musical collections, best of albums, and such horrifying destructions of the universality of the works and the intentions of the artist behind it, I am willing to give this collection another chance, since classical music is somewhere between Arabic and wine in degree of unmanageability. It also helps that all the tunes are familiar to almost every one of us, and the fact that the artists' intentions probably got killed by the hundreds of different conductors trying to convey their personal interpretation of the works.

What I am saying is that this CD can be to classical music enthusiast what 'absolute rock' can be to a rock enthusiast, or to someone slightly interested, with no conceptual frames of where to start the search for knowledge. "Best Classics 100" offers nothing except a selection of melodies where there's bound to be one for every taste, but where the album feeling, the entirety or completeness intended by the composer, or conductor, or performer is completely lost in a trade-off made with variety.

The collection is attempted organised by giving each CD a different theme, supposedly to describe the mood of the music, and the labeller succeeds only to a limited extent as we move from themes such as 'uplifting' and 'relaxing' towards 'golden'. I wonder what that golden feeling constitutes. It apparently is to be found in, amongst others, "Jesus Bleibet Meine Freunde", and in "My Heart Will Go On"?

But no matter how I try to describe this CD it will sound worse than it actually is. This because to me it works as a great reference to which I can always turn with my classical music questions. Was it Schumann or Schubert who were the sad one? Of all the -inis, which where which again? Who composed "O Mio Babbino Caro"? The starting point for finding out if you belong to the romantic or the renascence wing, lies within this assemblage, if you look with your ears.

If you feel that classical music is something you like, and you'd like to learn more about it, this is a way to get started. If used together with a book on classical music, or wikipedia, it can be a gateway drug, leading you towards the great different experiences to be found within the different genres of classical music, and within the different periods ranging from the 12th century, maybe even earlier, towards yesterdays and tomorrows spectacular compositions of melodies that conveys a feeling, a state of mind with much more precision than any other musical genre. Expect a fairly alright collection of classical prunes, and you won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Selection, But..........2005-04-21

...The Audio Quality is really not great. I bought this CD because I am new to classical, and the price was great! 100 songs for 25 bucks, thats like 25 cents a song, most songs are 1 dollar or more. Now I know why it's cheaper. The audio quality isn't that good. I imported the entire collection to my computer using Apple Lossless, and it sounded fuzzy, not crisp, with background noise, and sounded like compressed music, cutting off the frequency response.
I then played the CD's through my home stereo, with the same results. I plugged in my SHURE E5c headphones and the sound was soft, uninviting, lacking punch, with significant backgound noise (not just from the headphones), which was especially distracting when the music would get softer. I have heard much of the music before, and it was much more dynamic, entertaining, this recording seems too flat.
The music selection is ok, but I was hoping for some more interesting selections from the vast classical genre.
Overall, not that great of a recording, but many might not notice the difference, so if you are new to classical or aren't like an audiophile, get this album because it's a great overview of pop-culture classical, and it's pretty inexpensive.

Classical music is, by far, my favorite type of music. It can make you happy or sad, it can make you laugh or cry, and it can make you want to fall asleep or get up and dance. This 6-disc set is a must-have for and classical music-lover! It has all the great composers like Handel, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Bach, and Pachelbel. Some great songs include: Canon In D(Pachelbel), Morning: Peergynt(Grieg), Adagio For Strings(Barber), Cavatina(Myers), and much, much more. Every classical song you can think of is on here and the sound quality is great. So if you're looking for a good classical music CD, this set is all you need. Be prepared to be blown away!

I picked up this CD by accident. To much of my surprise, I was so moved from the very first song, until the last note of the CD. It not only makes me wanting to listen to it over and over again, it makes me to sing along with some of the songs. Irish blessings is a great song, and the chorus makes it even a better song. I highly recommend this CD.

    Anthem of the Moon is quite a departure for Oneida. Their last album, the mind-blowing Come On, Everybody, Let's Rock, was the first great unashamedly retro rock & roll record of the 21st century, striking the stance of every hoary old dinosaur from Humble Pie to ZZ Top in its quest for dumb rock nirvana. These Brooklyn-born loft dwellers are a contrary lot, though, and in the year-long interim--during which they rereleased their very likeable Enemy Hogs full-length--Oneida have hung up their leather jackets, turned their backs on the bright lights of New York City, and embraced the arcane rituals and psychedelic reverie of paganism. If its creators are to be believed, the largely excellent Anthem of the Moon was recorded to tape reel amid a circle of ancient stones in the woods of New England. Beyond the rasp of their staple instrument, a wheezing garage-punk organ, the four members of Oneida tear roaring feedback licks from their instruments, drawl half-remembered mystic mantras, and pile on trippy, multitextural instrumental sludge till the bludgeoning "People of the North" and the hypertense two-key organ-thumper "Still Rememberin' Hidin' in the Stones" practically tear at the seams. Oneida might be going back to nature, but the monumentally heavy Anthem of the Moon sure ain't no picnic: this psychedelic reward is only for seasoned, brave sonic explorers. --Louis Pattison

    Oneida are four lunatics from the big apple who recently brought their sonic nerve gassing to my city. I didn't like Anthem of the Moon as much as I did Enemy Hogs, which is their second full length. Oneida generally raise a sonic ruckus that's loud and trippy . They Onjure up the spirit of sixties garage bands like the Seeds and the Electric Prunes. They also somewhat mockingly ape seventies hard rock bands like Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple.
    When I saw the band at the show they didn't seem like they were being cynical at all, but actually seemed very passionate. They brought to mind a group of extremely talented five year olds with dreams of Rock stardom. Anthem of the Moon is pretty wild for the most part, but sags a bit in the middle.
    I just have one more thing to say the members of Oney is here to stay.

    I don't know what this is or how you would categorize it. All I know is that this CD will launch an attack on you speakers like an American missle on a taliban shelter, leaving your stereo a smoldering fiery mess in your living room. These songs are wierd, but their groovey. They rock hard with twisted Jon Lord syle keyboard riffs and angular guitars. Maybe a cross between Royal Trux and early Uriah Heep would best describe this CD. It's not like their other discs either. If you own C'mon Everybody Lets Rock and heard this CD playing you wouldn't guess it was Oneida. This CD is a statement and defines character. It has an affect on people similar to the way fighting had an affect on Ed Norton Jr. in the movie Fight Club. Take this to work and crank it up in your office. Your boss will be afraid of you. People will complain about you. Some may even stare when you walk by. However, you will gain a few admirers along the way. Your group will be the "in" crowd. People will find you irresistable and want to have sex with you. Your haters will be the old, the weak, the people who are already dead but walking around in stupor because they are afraid to live their lives. These people let the TV think for them. Your followers will be able to think for themselves. They are the idealistic, the young, the beautiful, the free. Which side do you prefer to be on? All this defined in one CD. Buy it.

    This album will be on permanent repeat on your stereo. It is one of the most rockin' jammin' psychedelically delicious albums to come out in a very long time. And hard to believe, it actually matches up to how captiviating they are live. I've got to note that it is also a very dynamic album. Anthem of Moon is a hodgepogde of noise and sounds that weaves a web that will with out a doubt capture you.

    This quintet of gorgeous young singers from Europe and South Africa bring opera to a new generation who is so familiar with pop bands and pop singers. Their looks alone are enough to turn heads as well as their voices which blend well. I've seen Amici Forever perform live and the choreography and sets really bring a fresh perspective to what most people would think of as stuffy old opera. Each singer takes turns singing lead vocals on each song and they don't over power each other's vocals like Il Divo.
    Definitely give this album a try!

    I have to admit, I am a sucker for classical, anything classical, the remote taste of classical and I'm hooked. But, it wasn't one of their classical crossovers that hooked me, it was Whisper of Angels which caught me in their net. My friend made me listen to it, and I was hooked invariably forever.

    The brighter soprano, Jo Appleby, just makes my kness weak, and the bass baratone, Nick Garrett is absolutely amazing, he adds the deep, richness undertones to all of the songs. Tsakane Valentine, the other soprano, has a softer, richer voice, it's definately a lower range soprano, because Jo Appleby tends to outshine Tsakane with her very clear voice. The two tenors, Geoff Sewell and David Habbin are just amazing.

    When I bought the album, I listened to it for hours on end. If mine didn't have a large scratch in it, it'd still be in my CD player, playing away happily. I plan on buying a new one as soon as I have the money.

    This music is inspiring, honestly, Band of Brothers, Zadok the Priest, Senza Cante (Unchained Melody), Prayer in the Night, all of them are just breath taking, it truly makes me want to pick up my voice lessons and get my vocal chords trained even better.

    I will warn you, though, that if you're really not into opera, if you don't like the sound of the operatic voice, perhaps look into Amici Forever first. Go to their website and watch the music video for Senza Cante, or listen to clips of the music, make sure you love it before you buy it. There's no sense in wasting amazing art.

    I HAVE JUST READ THAT BILLBOARD MAGAZINE HAVE RATED THIS ALBUM THE 2ND BEST ALBUM OF THE YEAR.....ONE BEHIND JOSH GROBAN'S CLOSER THE ONLY MISTAKE THEY MADE IS THAT THEY DIDN'T MAKE IT #1 !!! IT IS TRULY SENSATIONAL AND THE VOICES ARE MAGNIFICIENT.
    IF THIS IS THE KIND OF MUSIC YOU LISTEN TO YOU WOULD BE DOING YOURSELF A KINDNESS IN TREATING YOURSELF TO IT.

    ALL THE TRACKS ARE SUPERB AND EVEN THE BONUS TRACKS (WHICH ARE INVARIABLY NOT UP TO STANDARD) ARE GLORIOUS.

    THIS BAND DESERVES TO GO FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH AND IS THE MOST REFRESHING THING TO COME OUT OF THE MUSIC INDUSTRY FOR A DECADE AT LEAST!

    Having bought this album just recently I cannot get over the fantastic talents that are Amici forever. I was even lucky enough to recently see them in the US in concert at Atlantic City last weekend and live they are even more sensational. They are true stars and their album is the best of the best. So put away the rest and buy The Opera Band. If you like opera but in bite size chunks, sung beautifully, this is one you should definitely add to your WISH LIST now.

    First heard the Opera Band on TV and forget their name. Failed to find them on the Net as I did not have their correct name. Went into the local music store and there they were again in the background. Worth buying for their version of Lux Aeterna and Zadok the Priest. Looking forward to their next offering.
