As Always, Hilarious.......2007-05-03
This is so funny! Like all the Forbidden Broadway cds, its another knock-out. I feel like such a crazy person when I am in the car driving and I just burst out laughing. Its great and a must have for any Forbidden Broadway fan.
Spoof Odessey worth the laughs!.......2002-04-14
I enjoyed "Forbidden Broadway 2001: A Spoof Odyssey." This recording has some truly genius material, and although these actors' impersonations of famous Broadway stars aren't as strong as they have been in the past, the CD has a lot to recommend it.
Particularly strong is Track 16, "Let's do an old fashioned show tune," featuring Elton John and Ethel Merman duking it out over AIDA, which Merman says is "putting everyone here through hell." Likewise, Track 15, "Let's Ruin Times Square Again," tickles my funny bone. Also wonderful are the satires of Beauty and the Beast, Angela Lansbury, and the Full Monty; Gerard Alessandrini's done a tremendous job with these! In addition, this CD's introductory song is much stronger than those on the previous volumes of Forbidden Broadway. It really sets the tone for the best parts of this recording.
Unfortunately, with a few notable exceptions, the first half of the CD is a bit thin, which is why I give this recording 3 out of 5 stars: Even though it entertains me, there's a lot I have to skip over. For example, the Liza Minelli spoof annoying (though, I admit, a little funny), and in the Music Man revival satire, their Robert Preston impersonator sounds *nothing* like the original. (In earlier recordings, the actors *did* sound like the people they claimed to be.)
The good news is that the CD has 30 tracks in all, so even though there are 13 that I dislike, I just love the rest... I do recommend it!
better to be "Lost in Space".......2001-12-31
First and foremost, this CD is really for diehard fans of Forbidden Broadway, those of us who want the good, the bad and the ugly on the cd rack. I was extremely unimpressed with the latest offering.
While I agree with some of the other reviewers that there is some nice work, I don't know that Saturday Night Fiasco and Sondheim's Blues are sufficient to carry the rest of the tracks. Not much seems new or worse yet, important. Disney isn't new, nor is Les Miz. And while pointing out what is stale and pedestrian on Broadway was amusing on the last couple of releases, this Forbidden Broadway spoof clearly has joined the list of stale and pedestrian.
While there is some nice material on this disc, I really didn't laugh out loud, and that is why I have always bought these in the past.
If Alessandrini reduces the show to the same complaints of the same shows and then replaying lightly tweaked versions of past numbers, Trouble and Alan Cumming in Cabaret specifically, then he has himself is on the becoming a revival - and we know what he thinks of revivals.
The repeats might even be acceptable if there was something fresh in the perfomance, but both were done much better on their respective discs. I think Danny Gurwin is a great comedian, but he doesn't shine in either of these numbers. We also need a recording with no Ethel Merman or Liza numbers - give them a rest already. And why bring back Streisand with such a poor imitation? The earlier Barbara's were dead on vocal impressions as well as speech patterns. If you aren't going to improve on it, then don't drag it back out.
Alessandrini suggests that this is one of the best casts he has ever worked with. I don't know what he bases that on, but I beg to differ, either cast with Bryan Batt was significantly better, although they worked with fresh, clever material. Still, those recordings had verocious talent that brought Gerard's stinging wit to life for those of us who can't see every new production of FB.
Maybe it is time to go to off Broadway productions, or to the radio or the movies for some new ideas. Or else promise no references to the Gap, Disney, or Chorus Boys, (way over used on this recording), along with a Merman and Liza free season. Start from scratch. That might give us hope that Forbidden Broadway too might not be dead.
Stretched Thin.......2001-03-26
I just saw the stage production of Forbidden Broadway 2001: A Spoof Odyssey. I agree with the other reviewers who feel that Alessandrini is no longer at the top of his game. Perhaps he should lay off for a year or three and let Broadway present new things for him to lampoon - as it always will.
The opening sequence is forced and unfunny, and clearly in place only to batter the listener with the "2001" theme. Unlike a previous reviewer, I found the Judi Dench parody hysterical, though I question its accuracy.
The "Trouble" parody is, as it always was, incomplete and thin. My dear friend John Kenrick (...) did a better job with it - included the segments of the original song that GA left out, and in a funnier fashion. The Cole Porter parody is marginally amusing, but the Brian Mitchell/Marin Mazzie parody is dead on the mark, and VERY funny.
The parody of Cheryl Ladd remains in the show, although she's no longer in "Annie Get Your Gun" - Reba McIntyre is now in the role. Similarly, he stabs at Alan Cumming, who is no longer playing the Emcee. These numbers, while funny, lack punch. On the other hand, he once again skewers long time target Patti LuPone with an hysterical new parody of Being Alive. I suppose she's innately funnier, after all these years, than Alan Cumming, who is, after all, a relative newcomer.
The Rocky Horror parody is amusing, and the observation that sex has moved off 42nd Street and onto the Broadway stage is not without merit. The Beauty parody is amusing, and apt, but as has already been noted, GA has been clobbering us with the Disnification of Broadway for years now. I suppose he finds some glee in the fading success of this particular show.
I must say that while Gurwin is not the greatest singer, "Sondheim's Blues" is the most brilliant piece I've heard from Alessandrini in years. It's absolutely dead on. The friends I was with had never seen nor heard "Follies" and completely missed the point, but I was in stitches.
The "10 Years More" (which does not appear on this album, but remains in the show) has really begun to wear thin, especially with the closing this year of Cats and Miss Saigon. The Cameron Macintosh British mega-musicals are finally releasing their grip on Broadway, and this isn't as funny any more.
Broadway, despite the naysayers, will never die... and apparently, neither will Forbidden Broadway. I don't think it should - but I do think it needs a rest.
Do the Math.......2001-03-15
Four CDs cover the first 20 Years of Forbidden Broadway, Gerard Alessandrini's viciously witty satire of New York Theatre. The last year has seen Three new CDs, FB "Cleans Up Its Act" "20th Anniversary Edition" and now "2001 a Spoof Odyssey". Do the math.
Alessandrini is running out of ideas, and is spreading the remaining ones too thin. . Sanitized Time Square - Been there. Disnified Broadway - Done that, and so many times. Asinine casting faux pas, plotless pointless set-monster musicals, and Ethel Merman and Liza. We've heard it all before - and last time, it was funnier.
Now normally when a writer (or director or actor) has truly entertained me on numerous occasions, I'll forgive the odd show that disappoints. This would be the case here except for two things: Alessandrini is in the vicious parody business - he's never spared anyone else Besides, if he's going to actually include couplets like: "If lyrics are no longer witty... Then I don't want to go " he's inviting the pans.
When you hear the AIDA lampoon, you'll be reminded of the dim bulb in Cyrano de Bergerac who taunts the hero with the brilliant witticism: Your nose is very large
Yes, there are a few true Forbidden Broadway tracks on Spoof Odyssey. Dame Judi Dench singing "Why can't Americans do theatre like the Brits?" (with apologies to My Fair Lady), I Hate Ben (with apologies to Kiss Me Kate) and about 1/3 of "Let's Ruin Time Square Again" (no apologies necessary to Rocky Horror which understands how easy it is for good parody to go bad). Oh yes, there is one absolutely true Forbidden Broadway track: TROUBLE - yes, the same Trouble from Volume 3 which was just re-released on the 20th Anniversary compilation - and it's back again with a more hackneyed Robert Preston impersonation and all of 4 words changed. Granted it's one of the better bits, more worthy of rerunning than say, referring to Miss Saigon as Viet-Numb, but oh, he reran that gag too

Album Description
It's been said that Memphis is mentioned in more song titles than any other city. On In The Mood For Memphis you'll hear a diverse musical testimonial from some of Memphis' most dynamic voices. For the first time ever, a CD has been compiled celebrating the rock and blues Mecca of the world with 16 songs, each with Memphis in the title. From the mainstream "Walking In Memphis" performed by Eddie Harrison to the underground sounds of Mud Boy & the Neutrons' "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again," In The Mood For Memphis is filled with soul-pleasing, groove-controlling, guaranteed satisfaction.
Powerful and charismatic singers Gary Johns and Susan Marshall each perform different versions of the title track. Don McMinn's funky "Memphis In May" sets the mood for an exquisite rendition of "Memphis In June" by jazz diva Joyce Cobb. With Delbert McClinton on harmonica, Dan Penn's "Memphis Women and Chicken" is smooth, Southern and irresistible. You'll also hear Holly Shelton's sultry interpretation of W.C. Handy's "Memphis Blues" (followed by a haunting instrumental with The W.C. Handy Preservation Band). Songwriter Bob Cheevers adds his irresistible "Memphis Till Monday" exclaiming the virtues of good ole Memphis barbecue and fun. Gusto jumps in with a lively version of Lyle Lovett's "I've Been To Memphis." Other highlights include Daddy Mack Orr and Billy Gibson on the Chuck Berry/Johnny Rivers classic "Memphis," the soulful sounds of the Memphis All-Stars on their feel-good original "Lovely Memphis Day," and The McCarty-Hite Project's "Memphis Town." Cult rockers The Delta Queens include their raw, but fiercely independent "Memphis (Highway 72)," as the almost final track.
Patrick Dodd concludes the CD in a reflective tone with "Memphis Keeps Rolling On," a gospel-tinged pop ballad that examines the struggles and triumphs of Memphis and its legacy.
Since 1992, Inside Sounds has focused on producing the best of Memphis, from blues to alternative rock, and is the parent company of the critically acclaimed Memphis Archives label.

Memphis moods.......2004-02-18
16 songs of and about Memphis - in fact, Memphis is in the title of each and every song.
I was a wary of this album at first but the more I thought about it, the more I understood it. Memphis' diverse musical situation needs to be celebrated and Dattel has compiled a carefully conceived and varied selection here.
Some songs will be recognized, some won't. Some were done in Memphis (most of them) and some in other places. Some songs are old, some songs are new, but for the most part it's a blues album, and since it's from Memphis, even the weak cuts are strong.
Susan Marshall's "In the Mood for Memphis" begins the album and seven songs later, we hear vocalist Gary Johns' version of the same song. Longtime player Don McMinn tells about "Memphis in May" and Joyce Cobb tells us all about "Memphis in June" in her unique.
Two songs jumped out at me and made the album worth the time - Jim Dickinson's Mud Boy and the Neutrons hammering out his friend Bob Dylan's "Stuck Inside of Mobile (With the Memphis Blues Again). " It's done with verve and vigor and I've always liked Jim's voice.
Eddie Harrison's version of "Walking in Memphis" is the best version of that Grammy-winning song I've ever heard. I remember seeing and hearing Eddie Harrison and the ShortCuts 35 years ago and thought they were great, and he's an even better singer now.
From beginning to end, the musicianship quality is top-notch and Dattel and company have an excellent CD here. If you're already from Memphis, go get this CD and celebrate your town. If you're not from Memphis, come on down! There's magic here.

Björk's solo career has completely eclipsed her work with the Sugarcubes by now, and yet in the early to mid-'80s, the Sugarcubes reigned over the British charts and American college radio. The members of Glasgow's Life Without Buildings must have been paying close attention, because their debut, Any Other City, falls squarely in the tradition pioneered by the Icelandic band. The album is full of angular-yet-jangly, delicately quirky songs (nothing is outright weird) that are dominated by a pixyish female singer, this one named Sue Tompkins. A collision between the Fall's Mark E. Smith and Sleater-Kinney's Corin Tucker, Tompkins's sing-song, semi-ranting style takes over each track; if you don't go for her style, you're really out of luck. A veritable stream of free associations, for instance, makes up "The Leanover". This may drive some listeners crazy, but those who don't need straightforward lyrics as anchor will happily go along for the ride. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Album Description
The highly anticipated US release of their debut, which came out on Tugboat (UK), Glen of Piano Magic's label. LWB features members of the Glasgow School of Art fronted by the amazing Sue Tompkins. LWB has been compared to the Fall, Patti Smith, PIL, Television, and Sleater Kinney amongst others. -- The Wire. One of the most intriguing bands to burst into the record-buying public's consciousness in the last few years, Glasgow's Life Without Buildings deal in quirky, driving guitar music fronted with the unconventional vocal and lyrical style of singer Sue Tompkins. After three acclaimed double A-side singles released last year, anticipation for a debut album was high, and thankfully, Any Other City does not disappoint. - Pop Star Kill. "Sure, there were traces of the same late-70s/early-80s pop and punk outfits that are now (again) all the rage-Joy Division, Gang of Four, Liliput, even a darker, down-tempo X-Ray Spex-but instead of outright homage/imitation LWB ! seemed to have fashioned these sounds into something convincingly fresh and individual. They mostly sounded like themselves." -- New York Press.
Customer Reviews:
hey, i liked this.......2005-10-30
the music on this cd is great. really neat guitar lines that echo Johnny Marr's work in The Smiths, excellent bass playing that has grace and style, and drumming that is so good, it hurts. but the vocals are going to be the "make it or break it" element that determine if Life Without Buildings is your cup of tea. Sue Tompkins waifishly belts out her lines as if she was reading from her journal. most of her lyrics are spoken in soft Scottish tones and many times she repeats the same word over and over again to the rhythm of the song. a unique style of vocals, for sure. but if you can tolerate her style, this band is great. very tightly wound and full of a confident stride. and the production is smooth and clean; allowing all the elements of the band's sound and style to be fully exposed. and using no dubbing or overlays really gives a fleshed out feeling. pretty neat little album from this band.
Difficult, Obscure, and unconventional(but worth the effort).......2004-08-10
This'll be one of those albums that'll divide listener's opinions of its potential. As its one of those albums that take several listens to digest. With a vocal Delivery that touches upon Post-Punk (Think of a poetic, one-woman "The Slits"), with the instrumentation similar to Stripped down Indie-Rock, with jagged angular rhythms all built around the Vocalist ("Sue Tompkins"), whose singing-shouty vocal is a bizarre cross between the eccentricity of "Björk", and the rough-edged sound of early "PJ Harvey". An unusual combination for sure, but one that gives her combination of Poetry, Stop-Start singing, and continuously repeated words or phrases all the more distinctive (although those that prefer their vocals more traditional, will struggle with her esoteric singing).
The music moves between more rock-orientated quicker numbers, and slower acoustic singer/songwriter performances. The ease at which Sue Tompkins is able to straddle both changes of pace, is undeniably impressive and singles her out as a voice to watch in the future, with a raw almost unpolished strain that belies her captivating voice. With a unusual vocal combination that with the obscure lyrics, jerky delivery, sung/spoken vocals, Raw twisted theatrically & stark confusion in her voice it truly is a curious hybrid of Björk/PJ Harvey, centred around her own form of anxious and jittery lyrics.
This is almost certainly going to be one of those albums that take several listens to unearth what can be intially a difficult & overpowering listen. (Admittedly the slower numbers are far easier to digest & get a handle of whats going on). The repetitive repeating of words/Phrases may grate, and the jerky singing/Spoken delivery may bewilder. But if your prepared to stick with it (some may take longer than others to penetrate this album), and give the albums several listens, and what initially seems unfocused & Confused begins to gel. The little things about the album that at first irritate begin to become endearing. And its unconventionality, turns to a likeable eccentricity.
Not everyone will like this album, of that I'm sure, but most people wouldn't touch this sort of avant-garde-indie (is there such a genre??) style of music or be reading reviews such as this. So its fairly safe to say, that you're obviously not horrified at trying something different. And so, then i seriously suggest you give this a try. (especially if your unimpressed with a lot of recent indie bands all sound similar to each other). It's not the easiest album, to digest, but perseverance, will unearth a truly remarkable obscure gem.
Different and innovative.......2003-04-10
If you are looking for new musical ideas, try this out. Most of the vocals are scat, with implied melodies by the lead guitar. I hope we hear more from them.
Spastic Guitar Pop From Glasgow.......2002-10-01
Imagine if Bjork was asked to join Sleater-Kinney as the new lead vocalist. Oh, and imagine that Bjork contracted Tourette's immediately after joining. That's the best way I can explain Life Without Buildings. This record apparently came out early last year, but I only recently saw it at one of my local record stores, so it must have just come out in the U.S. I just happened to see it in a listening booth, skimmed through it, and bought it on the spot. Much like the Strokes' record, it's just an exciting record, pure energy. It's all quick-strum, jangly guitars and manic vocals from the lead singer(her name is Sue) who sings the lyrics sort of like the guy in "Shine" talked - words are repeated over and over again, Lou Reed-ish talk-singing is employed, stuttering, you get the picture. Rather than being annoying, it's actually quite electrifying. I would highly recommend this record to anyone seeking a much-needed jolt of rock and roll adrenaline.

Customer Reviews:
The finest British oratorio tenor.......2005-01-14
Webster Booth is remembered today for his musical association with his wife, Anne Ziegler, but he was also one of the finest oratorio tenors of the twentieth century.
On this CD he is in command of every emotional nuance of the recitative. 'Deeper and deeper still' from Jephtha is a good example of the emotional range. His diction is perfect and the Handelian runs are effortless.
He had an amazingly wide range, extending from a baritonal quality in the lower registers to the effortless high notes in the arias from 'Acis and Galatea'.
He also sings some standard operatic arias on the CD. All these are sung in English and he observes every expression mark to the letter.
I can thoroughly recommend this CD to potential buyers.

very, extremely rad.......2006-12-08
I challenge you to see Pilot Scott Tracy live and NOT have a complete and total blast. They're impossible to not fall in love with. "Any City" is a thoroughly enjoyable album.
Decent purchase.......2006-07-23
Like others said, PST is both melodic and aggressive. It makes for a nice contrast and they pull it off best in the songs Time Has Come, Return to My Home, and Master Jack. Definitely a good purchase. For a few songs, like Human Earthquake, Right On, and particularly Babies and Dust, they are repetitive and I felt like these were "filler." I hope their next work is more consistent concerning the contrasts within each song.
I like it, I really like it.......2005-02-02
PST is definitely different than The Causey Way, although it still has that incredible "can't put my finger on it, left of center" sound, it manages to take some of the best Causey melodies and expand outward. The album's style is "free" to say the very least. It has songs that are high energy pure rock (Human Earthquake, Right On) mixed with slow melodic keyboard driven songs (Daisies, Return To My Home) mixed with songs that sound like they were made entirely with a default Casio pre-set (Babies) mixed with songs that I can not quite put my finger on (Master Jack, Any City).
I would recommend this album to anyone who is interested in listening to something a bit different than the usual different stuff.
The friendly skies..........2005-02-02
"Any City" by Pilot Scott Tracy is weird, but not unlistenable. I went ahead and bought this based on how much I like the Causey Way, and "Any City" is much easier on the ears than most Causey material. Scott and Tracy's voices are much the same, but the music has really changed. There are more melodies in the keyboards and guitars and the songs seem to be more formulaic than Causey was. Depending on who you are, this is either a strenght or a weakness. The Alternative Tentacles website description of the band includes references to Man...or Astroman (probably because there is a member of Man...or Astroman in Pilot Scott Tracy) and Ladytron. I think those are fair comparisons, but I don't necessarily think that all Man... and Ladytron fans will embrace this record. It's still a creepy album, but not as creepy as Causey.

Silence please!.......2006-08-30
My only reason for buying this CD is the track 4:33 by Frank Zappa. 4:33 minutes of total silence, well almost total silence because you can hear a little background noices in the control room of Frank. It is a very interesting cd. But if you are not a fan of Zappa or Cage, and you like to hear music I say: buy something else. If you are ready for an experiment: buy this one or the CD Roaratorio.
Georgia Stone the best antiwar composition to date.......2002-12-15
The whole collection is interesting. However, the great moment of this collection is the Ono contribution Georgia Stone. It's a fluxus symphony. Never have I heard a more poignant antiwar piece. It rates in power and beauty to Henryk Gorecki's Symphony #3 with soprano Dawn Upshaw. If anyone ever doubted the genius of Yoko Ono as being relevant and an artist of the highest calibre then listen to this masterpiece and you'll be jolted into her energy as an artist. Yoko, give us more of this kind of music.
unknown..but i'm real excited.......2001-06-05
Jspark wrote a review that totally grabbed my intrest..I did my senior art history project on John Cage..using random sheets of paper for the lecture. the idea of hitting the "random button" is a great idea..and the idea of running two disks at once is even neater..being a big fan of just about everybody on the cd..especially Laurie Anderson doesnt hurt either... I haven't heard it yet, but i think i'll be sticking with the 5 star rating.
What? 183 tracks? What for? There is a reason..........1999-08-03
It might be bewildering at first. The first disc has 98 tracks; the second, 85. If you listen straight through, you do not perceive any discontinuity. A collection of John Cage pieces performed by friends, collegues, and admirers. Frank Zappa (American composer [complete biographical blurb that he provided]) contributed 4'33". Laurie Anderson tells a few Merce Cunningham tales. Seems like a fun tribute from the git-go. But wait! (And this is where the fun begins!) Switch your CD player to the shuffle (random) mode. Now look what happens. It goes from, say, Yoko Ono's piece to the Kronos to the Moraz prepared piano performance to Ken Nordine's narration - all in the matter of seconds. It is a great to homage to Cage himself with the great use of the random chance operations that he might have enjoyed. Every performance of this disc becomes a unique experience (just like Cage). For even more fun, try playing both discs at the same time (provided, of course, you have the means; if not, improvise). Or add another sound source as well, like, say, the radio, or the television very low, or a tape of white noise. The possibilities are endless. I had the pleasure of trying this one day with FOUR players going on simulataneously: two with these discs, another with Miles Davis far in the background, the fourth with a disc of bird calls. It was quite a fun sound environment and I would not hesitate to try it again. But that was my experience. Your experience may be different.

Product Description
"The New Era" is one of the most creative and prolific underground Christian hip hop albums to date. Big City crumbles each track with his agressive "in your face" style. With each verse skillfully crafted and aimed straight at the heart of anyone within earshot, it is evident that Big City is for real and has no apologies for it! His hit bangers like "No Matter What" and "God is For Us" help to get you amped while the heart felt "I Repent" reminds you that we all fall short; but for those lonely times of desolation he reminds of God's faithfulness with "U Got Me". From the opening Intro to the last bar in the sixteenth track their is no doubt that "The New Era" is indeed here!

Customer Reviews:
English is an asset and a drawback.......2004-07-20
The best thing about this recording of Carmen is the libretto. Conductor David Parry penned this facile and dramatic English translation. He avoids the pitfalls of literal translation to achieve an idiomatic flow that matches the rhythm of the original lyrics. I use this as a reference libretto for any of the French Carmens.
Unfortunately, the performance suffers from being sung in English. The singers declaim their parts with such proper British diction that Carmen comes across as a school marm. The spoken dialog is delivered beat for deliberate beat and is dripping with reverb. It makes the plaza, tavern and mountain pass all sound like a sewer pipe.
This is a good first Carmen for someone trying to understand the work. The libretto itself is a good investment for further listening. For an enjoyable performance with an emphasis on character and action, I recommend Regina Resnik on the London Double Decker set.
You Will Love Opera After Hearing Carmen In English.......2004-02-09
What a perfect introduction to opera. This newly released recording will surely get you hooked into opera. Carmen, a French opera by Georges Bizet, is the most recognizable and most popular in the opera world. It's famous melodies- the overture, the Habanera, The Toreador Song have all been featured in everything from cellular phone ring tones to Superbowl Commercial (last year's Superbowl with The "Opera In English" label has been making Italian operas into English for a number of years now. Also on the market are Verdi's La Traviata in English (with soprano Valerie Masterson as Violetta) Handel's Julius Caesar with Janet Baker and even Wagner's epic Ring Of The Nibeling sung in English. This is a terrific recording and I highly recommend it if you want to get into opera. Listen to this version first and then try the real, original French version Bizet had written. Patricia Bardon is sensational, sexy and dramatic as Carmen.
The real strength of this version is the dynamic drama. With the advantage of being sung in English, we get better insight on characters' emotions and motives, and we understand the drama a lot better. Carmen is all about great drama. Bizet drew the plot from the French writer Prosper Merimee's dark short story. Carmen is the ultimate femme fatale- a devil-may-care, sexy Gypsy living in Spain, seduces the conservatively raised soldier Don Jose, stealing him away from his fiancee, the passive Micaela, living a life of underground smuggling and rowdy taverns. "Habanera" and "The Gypsy Song and Dance" are very expressive of Carmen's extraordinarily liberal lifestyle. Don Jose, however, has fallen deeply in love- as he shows us in his song/aria "The Flower Song". But Carmen soon becomes tired of his constancy. Don Jose wants a committed, monogamous relationship with Carmen. But Carmen will not submit to love, since she is first and foremost a carnal creature. Eventually, she falls for the handsome Toreador Escamillo. Don Jose, consumed by jealousy, stabs Carmen at a bullfight after Carmen declares her love for Escamillo and rejects Don Jose's love. Don Jose's crazed, obscessive personality shines through in the English version as well. This tragedy has been done in English before so don't think this is the first time. Back in the 50's, there was a film, starring black actors "Carmen Jones" which was treated the same way as this opera- more like an English Broadway musical and with the dubbed singing voice of Marilyn Horne as Carmen. All in all, this recording is excellent.
A wholly credible "Carmen" -- finally!.......2003-09-17
This recording really sells "Carmen" as a drama. Although I have two other recordings of this opera and have seen it performed several times, it never quite worked for me dramatically. But thanks to the fine performances, conducting, and translation here, I've become a "Carmen" convert. Producing a good English-language performance of a foreign opera, especially a warhorse like "Carmen," is much more difficult than it might appear. You need performers who not only can sing the parts (of course) but also can sing *English* and make it halfway intelligible and make it sound like English and make it dramatically convincing to English-speakers. The singers on this recording do an excellent job all around. Don't be put off if you don't recognize their names -- they are up to the task musically and (especially) in their acting. Admittedly, as with *all* English-language recordings, some passages are very hard to understand without reading along, but most of the time the words are clear and effective. I would recommend this recording to any opera beginner or opera lover, even those who normally turn up their noses at performances in translation.
I love Carmen!.......2003-08-15
I do. I can think of no other opera with more melodic inventiveness, and few others with so sure a dramatic pulse. Carmen is popular and it thrills me to say that it is also a very good opera - not always true of popular things.
And what of this recording? Carmen sits well in English, so it is good to hear in translation, although some of the detais in the text jar. Escamillo refers to Jose as "my dear", which sounds rather peculiar, and the guide's line to Micaela: "it's not exactly inviting, is it?" sounds distinctly Middle England rather than Rural Spain. Some of the performers, not least Carmen herself, make the words work, although there are long tracts, especially with the chorus, where the language is distinctly indistinct.
The soloists are, by and large, strong. Patricia Bardon's deep, Handel-friendly voice adapts well to Carmen and she colours the music with phenomenal detail, sounding sexy and provocative from the start with an edge of pride and anger that emerges as the show goes on. She is out of her depth above the stave, though, and some extra top notes in the second act don't show her off to her best advantage. I have previously said that Julian Gavin is poorly served by recordings, though here he sounds much more even and gives a thrilling and musical performance (but his wooden spoken lines let him down). Mary Plazas is a lovely Micaela, rich-voiced and sincere (and word-perfect), but Garry Magee sounds miscast as Escamillo, lacking the ballast at the bottom of the voice to do justice to this tricky role.
The supporting cast is good (Mary Hegarty seems to do nothing but Frasquita these days!) but the really treasurable thing is the conducting. Stepping out of Italian Ottocento, David Parry turns his hand to this French Comedie with an appropriate lightness of touch. His pacing and handling of the set pieces is exemplary and the enrtractes go with a real swing.
A pleasure, then, for the Carmen naive or a novelty for the Carmen-acquainted. I nearly wrote Carmen-weary - but I don't think it's possible.
