Eat Static Fans Beware.......2007-01-06
If you love Eat Static... you might not want to purchase this item. For years, I've heard great things about Ozric, and been a fan of Eat Static, and many times thought that if I ever saw an Ozric album I'd pick it up. Well, I finally did, and I'm so utterly disappointed I can hardly even describe it. Boring, boring, boring. There is nothing remotely like the Eat Static I know and love on either of these discs; I wasn't expecting techno, and honestly didn't know what "kind" of music to expect at all. But I can enjoy any kind of music as long as it's good music, and I just don't think this is any good. It doesn't go anywhere; there's no point to it. If it was just pretty swirling psychedelia as I've heard it described, I'd probably like it, but it just sounds like... band practice.
I am one with the forest..........2005-01-28
Psychedelia, rock-oriented jams, jazzy improv, primal rhythm, spacey textures. If the sound of Ozric Tentacles can be fit into any kind of nutshell, that's the closest I can get to it. A few masterpieces in their vast catalogue stand out - Erpland, Sliding Gliding Worlds, The Hidden Step - and there's the rest, which may not hit that same peak but are still worthwhile for anyone looking to escape this planet for an hour.
So.. here we get two of those together, which makes a very good package. It covers a transition for the band, as Arborescence was the last album made with veterans Merv (drums) and Joie (keys), and BTO was the first with their respective replacements Rad and Seaweed. It was also the first to begin incorporating electronic elements into the mix, which has become more of a trend since. Both these little gems have been reprinted individually, but each comes in a cardboard digipak at a single-CD price. This way you get them both for almost the same price as a single, with packaging that doesn't suck.
Arborescence does have a verdant forest-like sound to it, particularly the semi-ambient title track which would have almost fit in on Brian Eno's Another Green World. It's music for sylvan pixies and woodland sprites, assuming they've also got a taste for dance club rave-ups and a connection with space aliens. Still, I think Become the Other stands out song-for-song as a stronger album. It also covers more of a range, from the hyper space-dub of "Cat DNA" and "Neurochasm" to the subdued and almost forbidding low-key groove of "Ghedengi" to the wondrous sonic journey of the highlight "Vicuthi," which builds from an acoustic Indian melody into a classic Ozric jam exploring the depths of the cosmos.
For newcomers I'd recommend starting with one of the masterpieces I mentioned in that first paragraph, but you can't exactly go wrong with this one either. If nothing else, it's one of the most accessible (and legal) mind-altering experiences out there.

Lush groves of grooves.......2003-03-21
This is one of my favorite CDs in the Ozrics catalog (and I own most of them). If you're not familiar with the Ozric Tentacles, their output consists almost entirely of long, meandering, generally blissful space rock jams, with techno, dub, ambient, and world music influences mixed in. Their overall sound has never changed a great deal from album to album, and they've put out a lot of albums, which can make getting into this band somewhat daunting.
Arborescence is, for my money, one of the better CDs, pleasantly demonstrating the band's style and musicianship without the long stretches of monotonous noodling or squonky techno effects that plague some of their other albums. The songs here benefit from not being overly long and having just enough variation to be interesting, but enough groove to make for enjoyable listening in a relaxed state. Plus, each track offers something different from the last, from the soaring guitar of Yog-Bar-Og to the lush ambience of Arborescence to the driving riff of Myriapod. In the end it all blends together nicely for a listening experience that's as lush and textured as anything the Ozrics have done. You can practically taste the pine-scented air.
Other CDs to consider: Erpland, Curious Corn, Strangeitude, Waterfall Cities
From where come these Ozrics ??.......2002-04-16
5 stars is not enough credit, I would give it 10 stars. This is the fist Ozric I listened to a few of years back. I'll say this.... I was completely BLOWN away by the sounds and i am still recovering years later.
The energy is out of this world - OTHERWORLDLY - I think is a good way to describe it. It's as if the music is being generated by some alien spirit that has an urgency to express itself and has no choice except to escape in wild sound and bursts forth in the element. I think of forests, creepy vines otherworldly landscapes, growth and spirituality when i listen to it. Other words I would use to descibe it....psycedelic, ethnic, jungle, spacey, ambient, experimental, etherial (not new age - it's too lively)....but then it's dangerous to classify it.
To me, Arborescence captures the escence of Ozric Tenicles (sadly I read that is no more in production). It is truely unique and has a quality that I think is captured in brilliance best on this C.D than any other of their work. What stands out most to me on the work is how during tracks the music seams to shift gears. This power SURGE occures, your mind does a whirl and you get this feeling that you are being transported to another plane - I have not heard this EFFECT in any other kind of music I have listened to.
This music sprung very far away from mainstream (will not apeal to all tastes). From where, i know not - it bubbles too much life and creativity and make the soul swoon.
Real music for real people.......2002-01-24
And, the reason for my title? Well, honestly, I never knew the band existed up til a week ago.
I came home and Aborescence was playing. My partner bought the cd and I was pulled into the music while working on my stuff on the computer. There are many ways to explain how I feel about Ozric Tentacles' music.
To start, I have never heard anything like this before. Their sound is so original, even though it reminded me of music from Cirque du Soleil. And, with no vocals, but pure music, it is great to listen to while working on the net or reading a book.
It's hard to classify music like this. When I went to the store to find other music from them, O.T. was found under Pop Rock, but their music is actually New Age or Just Instrumental.
With a little bit of vocalizing here and there, it balances the album out perfectly.
I am thirsty for more music from O.T, even though we have the 1st O.T. release "Erpland" remastered, as well as the 2000 release "The hidden step".
The artwork on both interior/exterior of the jewel-case is beautiful and original. And, it's cool that they talk about the group in a little Bio inside.
Here is the track list:
1-Astro Cortex 2-Yog-Bar-Og 3-Aborescence 4-Al-Salooq
5-Dance of the loom 6-Myriapod 7-There's a planet here
8-Shima Koto
To go with the fantastic tracklist, is a little note that the lengths of the songs are perfect, making the album really worth buying, because you are getting your money's worth. A couple of times, I thought the songs were over, and they weren't! I was really entertained by the cd.
Hope the review has helped.
Ozrics in fine form.......2001-10-18
I don't know what the person below was thinking when describing this album. This is a great place to start. It was my first Ozrics album and encouraged me to buy subsequent albums. The highlight of this cd in my opinion is dance of the loomi. The guitar melody lies in perfect synchronicity with the synthesizer lines. I could hear that song a million times.
Like others have said before, the Ozrics music is beyond description. One has to hear the music to really understand. The Ozrics have the ability to blend various ethnic sounds into a huge smorgasbord. They add an electronic element into an otherwise organic genre.
It's a shame that this album is no longer in print or that Amazon no longer carries it. The cd starts out strong and you realize after a few listens that the cd retains its strength throughout. But don't be fooled, Arborescence has a meditative quality (being instrumental and all).
This was recorded at a time where the guitar was the focal point of the album, not so with many other Ozric cds. Later albums lost the "edge" that this has. This is the place to start for new Ozric fans (or those wishing to hear something a bit different and refreshing).
