Looking for a smart, never-out-of-style singer who turns in a perfectly solid collection of Christmas songs, including a few surprises? J.T. is your man on James Taylor at Christmas, which is nicely balanced between pop and jazz selections, with more stately hymn-like fare and balladry. Always fine in his charmingly understated voice, Taylor and company try out the old gospel standard "Go Tell It on the Mountain" and the memorable "Some Children See Him." He smoothly cuts through "Winter Wonderland" and "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" with a bit of jazz flavor, and reprises Joni Mitchell's increasingly popular Christmas song (even though it's about getting away from the holiday), "River." One of the album's most satisfying delights is Taylor's funky version of "Jingle Bells," sung in a kind of barroom stomp with the most intriguing phrasing since Barbra Streisand sang it in the '60s. Soulful and bright and moody as well (when Taylor sings "In the Bleak Midwinter," you believe it's indeed rough), there's barely a clinker here. -- Martin Keller

" I wish I had a River.....that I could skate away on............".......2007-03-25
One song. This one. I bought this, because of it's inclusion. I cannot listen to this, and not have tears. Every lyric is 1974. The love of my life. It wasn't a storybook ending, and did not happen. Nevertheless, I love this cover of Joni's brillance, by JT, whom I have followed since early 1970. Oh, I do listen to the rest, and they are good. The sorrow may be ever present, but the good memories are there. She remains dear to my heart.
James is at this best!.......2007-03-17
My husband is an avid James Taylor fan! He loves this CD and listens to it even though Christmas has long since passed. James' very recognizable voice is at its best!!! A great gift for that J.T. fan on your list.
James Taylor's Christmas Album.......2007-03-09
I love this album! I bought it after reading a review and it is everything the professional reviewer said it was. It makes you want to settle down with a hot cocoa, a warm fire and just let the music relax your mind.
James Taylor at Christmas.......2007-03-09
As always, Mr Smooth! Another classic CD to be played year after year on Christmas and any other time. A mellow sound with soothing songs of love, family and good times.
smooth vocals.......2007-03-09
This CD was a gift I ordered for myself! And I was not disappointed. I enjoyed Taylor's "spin" on some of the Christmas classics but my favorite was the duet he did with Natale Cole. I liked that some other tunes made his line up that aren't over played during the holidays so it was refreshing to play and keep me in the spirit of the season. Who could get tired of his voice anyway?

Baby Einstein: Traveling Melodies .......2006-02-23
Hello everyone,
This CD is great!
My son has ADD & when we are out & he gets Anxious I put this CD in his portibale CD player.
It seems to help him calm down & better cope with things.
I think that every parent should have this CD that has a special needs child.
Thanks so much for putting it online for people to buy.
Thanks Again,
A Greatfull Mom
Saved My Sanity.......2005-11-03
My husband and I are musicians so I inwardly groaned when we were given this CD as a gift--I'd rather play the originals rather than some synthesized kiddie version. However, on a recent road trip we got desperate when our colicky son would not stop screaming. We popped this in the CD player and it calmed him down immediately. I swear, it's like aural crack for babies. We now play it at bedtime to help calm him down and it still works. You may not love this CD, but your baby will.
A Very Pleasant CD for Little Ones in the Car.......2005-11-01
I picked this up for driving around music and was very pleasantly surprised. Quite enjoyable (and my son seems to like it too!) and perfect for exactly what it says--traveling around. Easy listening and could possibly make your child smarter, great!

Great CD.......2007-06-14
Great music, soothing, calming and perfect for bedtime quality time.
Mellow, Sleepy, Wonderful.......2005-10-27
I bought this CD for myself, a 60 year old. I have trouble sleeping and have been buying CDs by this company. They are all wonderful. I'm asleep in about 15 minutes!
Soothing Bach.......2005-04-29
It would probably help to first clear up a potential misconception in the unfortunate subtitle which refers to "lullabies" - a term that brings to mind for most people simplistic, sing-songy music hummed to babies in a crib. Lullabies are wonderful and have their place, but the music on the CD is not this (and Bach would probably have cringed a bit at the thought of his music here being called "lullabies.") What is here is a most wonderful, high-quality collection of Bach's Baroque music that is most condusive to creating a quiet, peaceful mood. The selections here include many famous pieces from Bach played by an impressive, all-star line up of notable musicians. Some listeners might take comfort in knowing that all selections have a similar, gentle tempo and mood without those unwanted changes in loudness from soft to LOUD that can startle one (the baby?) from sleep or quiet contemplation. The sound quality is good for the purpose of this collection - to provide relaxing background music or Rx for insomnia. I listen to this CD often if I wake up at night.
Johan Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) was a devout German Lutharan who devoted much of his life to composing music for various church functions and events in his position of 'head music master" in his different appointments. As such, we see often in Bach's music a "pastoral" quality - whose effect is to encourage, comfort and renew the spirit. No piece (and title) is more demonstrating of this quality then the opening "Sheep May Safely Graze" which is perhaps the finest recording of this magnificant and comforting piece by the Stuttgart Orchestra who brings a most expressive quality to the music. Its inter-weaving and delicate melodies give rise to serene visions of carefree green pastures and the sense that all is well. So, perhaps in that vein, this music has some commonality to traditional lullabies.
But, even though the music is serene, there is much musically to hear in these tunes - for those still awake. Bach's genius is seen here for setting a lyrical solo instrument (violin, oboe, cello) against a stable, comforting background orchestra pulsing away in Bach fashion. Many of these works are a typical style of Bach music known as "fugues" - which is a type of music where two-three instruments simultaneously play different melodies that all blend together in splendid harmony. This consistent, calming rhythm with gently soaring melodies are part of what makes such music suitable for bedtime. Finally, one who is just nodding off can appreciate that the last two selections are the most peaceful with the fewest notes coming from the solo guitar of Pepe Romero. They end in a whisper which should be right about the time you fall asleep and the CD player quietly clicks off. This is a really wonderful compilation of Bach's music that should be pleasing to both those just looking for some nice, relaxing music - or even to the long-term classical collector who already has 30 CD's of Bach's music but values the variety and soothing qualities of such 'even-temperament' collections.
Great for kids!.......2001-11-29
I bought this CD for my daughter when she turned six. It's been a year and she still listens to it a lot. Yes, she also listens to Britney and Christina, but on many nights she will request Bach (aka: that one with no words). It's great to know that they selected soothing, relaxing pieces. It's a wonderful way to broaden my daughter's horizons while also getting her to sleep.
My Kind of Bedtime.......2001-10-17
This CD is lovely and soothing, and I have to take exception to R. Loam's contention that the entire CD is in the minor key. I can determine from listening to the samples that certainly #1 and #5 are in the major key, and there are probably more. The minor key does not have to invoke meloncholia - it is many times in the eyes of the beholder.

The magical triad behind Rushmore's spunky, starry-eyed soundtrack--music supervisor Randall Poster, composer Mark Mothersbaugh, and director Wes Anderson--leaps forward a decade from that beloved soundtrack's '60s gems, in the process adopting a more pensive feel for The Royal Tenenbaums' musical backdrop. It may lack the euphoric sing-along feel of, say, Creation's "Makin' Time," but the rock and folk tracks here perfectly match the film's crumbling characters and their dilapidated relationships. The Ramones' "Judy Is a Punk" is a burst of nostalgic rebellion but surely causes a sad twinge in light of Joey Ramone's untimely death in 2001; gloom-folker Nick Drake's "Fly" and Elliott Smith's excellently depressing "Needle in the Hay"--which is used to chilling effect during a wrist-slashing scene--further deepen the dark thread running through Tenenbaums. But those who prefer the sunny disposition of Rushmore will be thrilled by the calming concoctions of Mothersbaugh, who heralds the coming of a new scene with graceful woodwind/string parts ("Scrapping and Yelling") and playful sitar pieces ("Pagoda's Theme"). Throw in the Clash's squalling "Police & Thieves" and the Velvet Underground's petal-soft "Stephanie Says" and you've got another winning soundtrack from the film biz's most in-tune music lovers. Tenenbaum or not, you can go home again. --Kristy Martin
Customer Reviews:
Great easy listenening .......2007-02-02
I like this soundtrack because its very laid back. Enjoyable songs that help you relax.
Help trying to figure out the title of a song.......2006-04-17
Hey, maybe you guys can help me, does anyone know the title of the song playing on a radio while owen wilson is getting high (or preparing to do so) with his friends and his dad and brother step in and tell him they want to help him. I really love that song and i have no idea what the title is
omitted song.......2006-02-01
For anyone interested, one song which was omitted from the soundtract which has not been mentioned is:
Emitt Rhodes - Lullabye
A beautiful track played in the scence where Royal is lying in his bed sucking down a shake and reading a book when Chas say "lights out old man" and switchs off the light. One of my fav songs in the movie along side the rolling stones - she smiled sweetly. sadly both songs were omitted but still a beautiful soundtrack.
Where's Van Morrison?!.......2005-03-16
This is a near-perfect collection of 60's and 70's pop and folk. The sad but hopeful vibe of the songs fits the movie's tone perfectly and you can't really agrue with songs like "Stephanie Says." it's also nice to hear the two Nico cuts since Nico's solo work really doesn't get the acclaim it deserves these days. My problem with this album is that it favors symphonic songs from the film instead of pop songs also used in it such as "Ruby Tuesday" and Van Morrison's "Everyone." I'm really bummed about the exclusion of "Everyone" because i thought it closed the movie so well. They should have released the score and the soundtrack separately so all these great songs could be included.
The Royal Tenenbaums Soundtrack.......2005-03-14
The Collector's Edition Soundtrack leaves out two great Rolling Stones' tunes She Smiled Sweetly & Ruby Tuesday. Also left to the winds is John Lennon's Look at Me, the Clash's Rock the Kazbah. The First Edition leaves a few tunes off too but it is a far better Soundtrack. Puckstar

Album Description
Featuring original music composed by Alberto Iglesias. Adapted from the best-seller John le Carre's romantic thriller, two-time Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz head the cast of "The Constant Gardener." In a remote area of northern Kenya, the dedicated activist Tessa Quayle (Weisz) is found brutally murdered. Her travelling companion, a local doctor, appears to have fled the scene and the evidence points to a crime of passion. Sandy Woodrow (Danny Huston), Sir Bernard Pellegrin (Bill Nighy), and other member of the British High Commission assume that Tessa's widower, their mild-mannered colleague Justin Quayle (Fiennes) will leave the matter to their discretion. They could not be more wrong... Featuring music performed by acclaimed Kenyan percussionist and Real World recording artist Ayub Ogada, Alberto Iglesias' ("La Mala Educacion," "The Dancer Upstairs," "Todo Sobre Mi Madre") lush score evokes the film's compelling African and European landscapes.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Score.......2007-04-24
For someone like me who purchases soundtracks for the score to use for dance & skating programs, this soundtrack definitely made it into my collection. My only minus to the soundtrack is that there isn't much variety among the many tracks. But I am still able to work around it.
Only track 13.......2007-03-31
In my opinion, only track 13 is worthy of buy this CD. Track 13 is beautiful, other than that extremely depressing music...... Once again track 13 is the most beautiful adn touching music that I have ever heard!
Great Service.......2007-02-12
My CD was delivered in a very timely manner and the product was in great shape upon arrival.
A nice reminder of a very moving movie.......2007-01-12
Favorite songs are the ones by Ayub Ogada. I think it's wonderful that we found his music through this film.
it captures the spirit of the movie.......2006-11-10
I like this soundtrack because it reminds me of the movie, which I loved. I am not sure I would appreciate it much if I hadn't seen the movie and didn't have pictures in my mind for each theme. It is redolent of Africa though and that in itself is satisfying.

Great improvised jazz.......2007-05-12
This is a wonderful album, especially for those who don't know what a fine jazz piano player Nat Cole was. Recorded in 1944, it represents great, pre-bebop music. To me the best parts are Nat's solos and the interplay between him and Les Paul, whose solos are both inventive and full of humor. The follow-the-leader part between the two on track 3 is both great jazz and great fun.
The other highlight is listening to a 20 year old J. J. Johnson, especially on the ballads.
Czech Made, American Played.......2005-11-29
That's right, this CD on the "Jasmine" label was made in the Czech Republic, but it's the perfect antidote to "American Made, World Played," the rock and roll album currently being hyped as "Les Paul's first recording in 27 years." You'll be lucky to hear any of Les amid the din of the latter album, but on this 1944 session, the first concert ever by Jazz at the Philharmonic, Les stretches out as on no other recording(including the recommended "Jazz Collector Edition" on Laserlight). No electronic gadgetry here--in fact, very few of his patented, sometimes corny, licks. Les is extemporaneous, reactive, and fully "in the moment" on this date. His musical conversation with Nat Cole on "Blues, Part 2," has to be heard to be appreciated, but he and Nat go after each other in 4 and 2-bar "copy-cat" exchanges that testify to the finely tuned ears and formidable technique of both soloists. And the crowd is audibly responsive to each imaginative melodic twist and turn.
Besides Nat and Les, it's fascinating to hear J. J. Johnson on so early a session. Rhythmically, he's very much in the swing era, though his attack and articulations definitely anticipate his imminent emergence as the father of modern jazz trombone.
Admittedly, Illinois Jacquet's squealing and squawking is a bit of a distraction, but it also serves to highlight the good taste of the other players, including Les. The audio quality is erratic but far better overall than I had dared hope for. If you want to hear Les Paul the guitar player, as opposed to Les the electronics wizard, or Les the nonagenarian being exploited by record companies trading on his name, this is the one to own.
Still Exciting.......2004-07-13
The album I have is not this one but the Charly label import LC8477 called The Beginning. It has all the same cuts as this but adds one more a 14 minute version of How High the Moon with Krupa, Willie Smith, Ventura, Howard McGhee, Jacquet et al. Amazon has it and I recommend it. Yes it is all that the previous reviewer has said. You will play be playing an air instrument before this album ends.
Jazz at the Philharmonic.......2001-07-31
If you are a fan of Les Paul, Nat King Cole, or Illinois Jacquet this album is for you! Better than that, this album is also a historic first, the first of Norman Granz's "Jazz at the Philharmonic" concerts. The album was recorded in Philaharmonic Hall, Los Angeles, July 2, 1944. The reissue has been done masterfully, and it is a good recording. I bought this album because of Les Paul combined with Nat King Cole - I thought what an interesting combination. I did not realize what a great jazz album I had purchased! Many of you will be surprised to hear another side to Nat Cole and Les Paul (I'm already on a search for more of their jazz contributions!). They are gathered with Illinois Jacquet and Jack MeVea on tenors, Shorty Sherock, trumpet; J.J. Johnson, trombone; Johnny Miller and Red Callender, basses, and Lee Young, drums. This is a live concert and the crowd and band were in a great mood for a night of music - lots of crowd noise and comments from band members. My favorite numbers include "Blues", a number that is far from what one usually considers a blues tune - an untempo, driving piece which includes a solo by Illinois Jacquet that's fantastic. He produces notes on his tenor that I didn't even know existed! You want to hear a hot, hard driving, and wailing sax - listen to his solo! Body and Soul is a great ballad during which a solo by Les Paul provides a great lesson in improvisation (this would be a great piece to instruct a newcomer to jazz as to "What is all about". My other favorite on this album is "I've Found a New Baby", Everyone gets a great solo in this uptempo piece. Johnny Miller is particularly interesting and clever with his bass solo as is Illionis Jacquet on his great tenor solo(I've got to hunt up more of his work!). This album has a lot to offer. It marks a historic moment in jazz performance history, it assembles a great group of musicians, the crowd and the band were ready for some great music, and there is some great solo work. Again, it is fascinating to hear Nat King Cole and Les Paul play great jazz. If you're foot doesn't tap to this, you're dead!

Album Description
Top of the British Classical Charts for 10 Weeks! Billboard Top Ten Classical Recording - December 2002! This album gathers together most of the carols I have composed over the years, plus a sprinkling of my arrangements of traditional carols, grouped to form a program which narrates, reflects upon, and celebrates the Christmas story. I have always enjoyed carols ever since I first sang them as a member of my school choir, and it was not long before I began to write carols of my own-in fact my first two published compositions were the Nativity Carol and the Shepherd's Pipe Carol. For any musician involved in choral music, Christmas is an especially joyous time, and I am indeed happy that it has played a part in my musical life for so many years- JOHN RUTTER
Customer Reviews:
Rutter Christmas Album.......2007-05-14
Great selection of music, and well presented. This is however older recordings that do not match the quality of Rutter's latest recordings such as the Te Deum or the Gloria.
Unique and Beautiful!.......2007-03-09
John Rutter, and his beautiful music, is such a gift to the world. This unique Christmas CD is magnificent! Especially touching are two of Rutter's original carols, "Christmas Lullaby" and the joyful "Angels' Carol." The musical selections speak to the soul, helping the listener connect to emotions of joy, peace, faith, hope, and love. This is a worthy addition to your collection of Christmas CDs.
Johh Rutter Chirstmas Album.......2007-02-19
If I were to choose only one Christmas album to ever own, this would be the one. John Rutter is an exceptional composer of religious music, with unusual harmonies. The music is difficult to sing, and because this is his own choir and he is directing it, the performance is flawless. Gives you goosebumps.
Liked it enough to go through a lot of trouble to give it a review........2007-02-07
Great music by John Rutter: Great performance!
John Rutter and Cambridge Singers.......2007-01-18
This is quintessential English cathedral music; beautifully sung. Reminds one of the English Christmas -- warm and serene -- that we've only experienced in our dreams!

While it is impossible to really squeeze The Very Best of Janet Baker onto just two CDs, this two and a half hour anthology is a fine portrait of the British mezzo-soprano. Central to CD 1 is Elgar's Sea Pictures, a definitive account with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir John Barbirolli. While other British music is represented by Vaughan Williams's "Linden Lea," Britten's "Corpus Christie Carol," and Warlock's "Pretty Ring Time," CD 2 balances the program with 10 Schubert songs accompanied at the piano by either Gerald Moore or Geoffrey Parsons, which range from "Ave Maria" to Shakespeare. The set lends equal weight to orchestral and more intimate song, as well as to works in English--a very moving reading of Handel's "He was despised" from Messiah--and European landmarks, including Mendelssohn's On Wings of Song and Brahms's Alto Rhapsody, the latter with a superlative London Philharmonic Orchestra under Sir Adrian Boult. In an age of technically dazzling but sometimes bland singers, this release is a reminder of emotionally intense musicianship that retains vocal clarity and commitment to the composer's intentions over superstar ego. The word great is often used all too easily, but it could not be more appropriate for this outstanding collection of a great singer. --Gary S. Dalkin
Customer Reviews:
The Very Best of Janet Baker is simply the very best!.......2005-02-09
This cd and this amazing musician are an absolute must have for any music lover or music snob alike! Her voice is amazing!
Grace Incarnate.......2002-09-02
If there is one singer who has ever truly been able to master the singer's art of interpretation, this is her. She is a gift to music, I truly believe this. A few words, or glowing adjectives could not accurately describe the singing of a woman who epitomizes art. And music. Grace and beauty.
Each track on this cd is a perfect union of poetry, melody and technicality. Dame Janet Baker fully immerses herself into each piece, and delivers highly commited, intelligent & emotional performances.
A Rare & Glorious Singer.......2002-06-10
This is a pretty good cross-section of Dame Janet's output from the prime of her career. There are few if any singers like her around today. There are many mezzos who can sing beautifully, with great articulation and finesse, but they lack the moral and musical integrity Dame Janet always brought to her singing. The voice is ardent, seeking, yearning, finding, exulting. Listen to the excerpt from "Dream of Gerontius" or the third of the "Sea Pictures" to see what I mean.
She does not sing to show off. She sings to enlighten, to illuminate, to reveal, to enter into. Her voice carries us off, near to Heaven.
Dame Janet has been neglected of late. This recording shows us why, in these perilous times, we need her more than ever.

Is it a two-CD set with a particularly thick booklet, or a 562-page book with a compilation album attached? Either way, the unpretentious text by Keith Anderson offers an introduction to the lives and works of dozens of composers, together with recommended recordings from the Naxos and Marco Polo catalogs. Anderson includes a useful 59-page glossary of musical terms and an extensive listing of classical pieces used in films. The odd thing about the 36 extracts and complete pieces on the CDs is that they do not form an A-to-Z at all. Rather, they are arranged chronologically, from 1,000-year-old Gregorian chant to the opening movement of contemporary composer Philip Glass's Violin Concerto. Between these two points is the early music of Palestrina and Byrd; the Baroque glories of Vivaldi and Bach; the 19th-century Romantic masters, from Beethoven to Tchaikovsky; and such 20th-century greats as Rachmaninov and Stravinsky. Opera, song, and chamber music are barely represented, but only so much can fit into 151 minutes. Essentially a deluxe sampler of the vast Naxos catalogue, the discs offer a good introduction to some of the most famous and melodic music ever composed, while the book will be very useful to newcomers to the potentially confusing world of classical music. --Gary S. Dalkin
Album Description
A-Z of Classical Music is a remarkable 562-page, illustrated bok, detailing the lives of all the great composers as well as many less known, but equally fascinating, musical masters. Like the Naxos range of recording itself, A-Z of Classical Music is a rich source of inspiration for anyone either just embarking on a lifetime of musical enjoyment or for whom classical music has long been a way of life. Included within is an extensive glossary of musical terms plus a unique guide to classical music used in acclaimed films. Two-and-a-half hours of the finest music from across the centuries are contained in the accompanying CDs.

LETTER PERFECT CLASS(ICAL) ACT!.......2003-01-19
It's only natural we sometimes hit the high seas....make that Cs. This is one box set about which we sing praises. This set features more than two hours of the finest music from across the centuries by such composers as Schubert, Chopin, Mozart, Handel, Stravinsky and Glass. The set also comes with a 562-page illustrated book, detailing the lives of hundreds of composers, a
glossary of musical terms and a unique guide to the classical music used in 360 top films.
Great Tracks -- Great Value -- Great Book, Who Can Complain?.......2002-08-30
Naxos is a fabulous label -- you will not get samples of the best classical music through the ages at no better price. These tracks are as good as any of the over-priced major orchestras and in some cases better. This is a great starter set for a beginner or anyone who just wants to "taste" the classics. If you prefer Opera I would suggest the A to Z of Opera -- most of the tracks on A to Z Classical are orchestral. I was so impressed with this collection that I purchased the Discover the Classics Vol's 1-3 which will give you a more detailed look at the great classics. Take a look at the Naxos web site at NAXOSUSA.COM -- what you will see will blow your mind -- there are literally thousands of pieces that you could listen too!
At this price, how can one complain?.......2001-09-30
This is pretty much a CD version of a mini-Naxos and Marco Polo catalog. All the pieces and extracts are ordered chronologically on the 2 CDs and are of very acceptable quality, but don't expect excellence in every track. Personally, I was particularly disappointed with one of my favourite Pachelbel pieces. The Naxos Canon & Gigue lacks all the emotion of my favourite versions.
Still, any possible weaker performances are of little importance after you get your hands on the fat booklet with over 500 pages. The booklet offers a short intro about the great composers, a glossary of musical terms, a list of works used in films and dozens of illustrations of several composers.
Overall, at this price, this is a must-have pack for any beginner, and might be useful for the occasion "quick check" of the work of many composers. Do not expect many detail, nor references to all the works of some composers; I often got frustrated with the lack of detail in some cases, but in general, the booklet is very effective for a quick reference.
You will need more titles that offer more complete information, and you won't truly learn to love classical music just by reading it, but it is small and compact.
It really puzzles me why Naxos did not include a full index of composers, a serious omission. To find a particular composer you will have to look for it yourself in over 500 pages. Also, the separation of the text is not so good, making the search even a bit slower. The lack of the index is truly annoying and I am sure it will be corrected in future editions.
Even with a few weaker pieces and the lack of the index, at this price, there isn't much to argue about. This is truly a bargain that you should not miss. I would also recommend the A-Z of Opera, which offers a bigger booklet with over 700 pages, focusing on opera works and mentioning several composers that are absent from the A-Z of Classical. That other booklet has a very complete index, and much clearer text layout and separation, that's the way both booklets should have been designed.
The two sets complement each other very well. Highly recommended.
