The Who wrapped up their 2000 World Tour--possibly their final wave of the Union Jack hankie now that John Entwhistle has died--with this red-carpet Teenage Cancer Trust charity shindig at the Royal Albert Hall. Time has taken its toll on some of the Who's more splenetic sensibilities; there are times when Roger Daltrey sounds too seasoned and contented to muster much in the way of vocal vitriol. But the old grumblers can still sound enthusiastically cross. While few live albums rival Live at Leeds for impelling urgency, Live at the Royal Albert Hall has added curiosity value by virtue of the contributions from a slew of younger and famous devotees, including Eddie Vedder, Paul Weller, Bryan Adams, Noel Gallagher, Kelly Jones, and Kennedy. Not to be upstaged by younger bucks, the Who sound positively regal on "Won't Get Fooled Again" and as feral as rutting tigers on "My Generation." --Kevin Maidment

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Performance.......2007-01-28

I already own the Live at the Royal Hall DVD which is a great DVD to own.
This CD package includes a bonus disc of unreleased Who material which was performed later that includes Young Man Blues, Summertime Blues, I Do Even Know Myself and I'm Free. In addition, the original CD also has a great performance bt Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam from the Who's Next Album Getting in Tune. In addition, it has another song Mary Ann with The Shaky Hand. I have converted this performance to MP3 files in order that I can listen to it on my IPOD. In addition, this CD/DVD has probably one of John Entwistle's last performance since he passed away later at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas before the start of another Who tour. In addition, great performance by Bryan Adams, Noel Gallagher, Kennedy, Eddie Vedder and others. It is a great tribute to one of my favorite and greatest Rock and Roll bands of all times. The Who is still touring and I highly recommend everyone to see them.

4 out of 5 stars Not Bad for a Bunch of Old Geezers.......2006-11-10

When I first saw this set available on CD, my first thought was "great - just what the world needs - another Who live album!" But the sucker that I am for music by The Who, I bought it anyway, and was pleasantly surprised by how good it is. Having stripped themselves to a five-piece after the 1989 "The Kids Are Alright" tour and the 1996 "Quadrophenia" tour, the Who got back to basics for this show. These guys may have been in their fifties when they did this, but that didn't stop them from returning to their over-the-top bombastic glory. If I could use one word to describe their performance, it would be "incendiary." Roger Daltrey's voice can't quite hit the high notes like it used to, but he showed on this set that he still had the pipes to do Who songs justice. Pete Townshend has a very nasty guitar tone throughout, and this is not a bad thing. Best of all, you get to hear John Entwistle, the Bassist of the Millennium, playing lead bass while Pete thrashes out his power chords. The interplay between him and Pete, especially on Magic Bus, is a revelation. He plays a mind-bending solo on 5'15. Sadly, The Ox is no longer with us. I still miss him. There are no bassists like him - before or since. His final performance is documented on the bonus disc, and it's quite a performance. The band is at it's fire-belching best throughout. The song selection is top notch, and includes a few surprises (The Relay, Let's See Action, I'm One, Mary Anne With the Shaky Hand), plus the usual suspects. The only reason I don't give this set 5 stars is because too much of the between-song banter from Pete is left in. The only exception to this was when he put a heckler in his place. Pete always was a punk at heart. This performance reminds me of when they played at MSG in New York after 9-11. I remember they blew the roof off the place, and this performance in London has that same feel. This is a worthy addition to any Who fan's collection. Get it now - you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars An Incredible Live Album........2006-11-05

The Who are truly one of the greatest bands ever (along with Led Zeppelin, they are the greatest ever for me), and this 2000 recording of their benefit concert for teenagers with cancer at England's legendary Royal Albert Hall is proof that even as they enter old age, these guys still rock like nobody else.

The performances (including four bonus tracks from 2002) are unbelievably strong the whole way through, from "I Can't Explain" to "Won't Get Fooled Again" to "See Me, Feel Me / Listening To You". I could've done without the special guests, but that still did nothing to make the album any less great.

This cd is also special because you get to hear the late, great John Entwistle for one, last time. The man is on fire throughout the whole show. What a truly great loss. I know I'm not alone when I say John is deeply missed.

This is an absolutely fantastic live album that belongs in everyone's collection.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good for Senior Citizens.......2005-11-24

Don't get me wrong. This is no "Live at Leeds". This is no "Isle of Wight". But believe me, this is still better than most live albums. John Entwistle is at his peak in the peformance of "5:15". Pete's playing sounds great throughout the album. Although Roger Daltrey's vocals are definitely not what they used to be, they still aren't unbearable. Zak Starkey is the best drummer that could've followed Keith Moon. Exiciting guest peformances from Noel Gallagher, Eddie Vedder and more.

Bottomline:If you can get this cheap like I did, then get it. Entwistle's bass solo in 5:15 is worth a few dollars itself. If not, then be sure to get "Live at Leeds" as a testament of The Who's live domination of the rock industry.

5 out of 5 stars Great Performance at a Great Price.......2005-10-10

Good song mix, although mostly predicatable. Sound is good and performances passioned. 2 1/2 discs for under $10 makes this a no-brianer. Last gigs with John E. on Bass makes it a nice historical gem. Who are YOU?

        5 out of 5 stars Pure entertainment.......2001-08-12

Credibility. Sinatra had it. Tony Bennett has it. So does Tom Jones - recently re-invented for the younger generation. These singers are all filed alongside Engelbert Humperdinck in the Easy Listening area of any record store. So why is Engelbert regularly scorned, almost regarded as a joke? He suffers from his image, that of the "King Of Romance", Vegas showman who, his critics claim, has more style than substance. Anyone who gave him a chance - actually LISTENED to his CDs or attended his live show - knows differently. He is a much better singer than he's generally given credit for - his vocal range and versatility are impressive and stamp his distinctive mark over many of popular music's greatest songs. In concert, he's very funny, often at his own expense. He appears to really enjoy himself on stage, when so many of his contemporaries merely go through the motions. Engelbert has sustained a career that is now in its fifth decade - with his recent UK release spending over two months in the British Top Ten album chart. This live CD, recorded in London in 1989, showcases his greatest hits and his admiration of Nat King Cole through a selection of Cole's best known songs. Having seen Engelbert in concert in May 2000, he's as good as ever and will no doubt continue to defy his critics for many years to come.

        5 out of 5 stars The man's awesome!.......2001-08-09

My husband and I love this cd, Engelbert does a great job on all the songs. We have parties and dance away into the night. His romantic ballads make you just fall in love more with your partner.

5 out of 5 stars Engelbert at his best!.......2000-05-12

I recently saw Engelbert in concert, and had to get this live CD. His studio recordings that I have don't capture what it's like to see him in concert, and this does! The performances are great, and I always find myself humming his songs in my head. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

5 out of 5 stars ENGE SINGS HIS SONGS AT "HOME"..........2000-03-17

I have to tell you that I own this video and had to buy the CD for my car. The songs are so.... great - all of them! He sings "Hello" like I've never heard it sung and his "Moment In Time" is an up-beat version which gets you toe tapping! I love this "old" collection because it renews the songs forgotten. If you purchase this CD - you will enjoy it to the utmost!

5 out of 5 stars ENGE IN "JOLLY OLE ENGLAND".......2000-03-07

Just finished viewing this video - and wow.....His performance was once again outstanding and the London Philharmonic Orchestra was a welcome choice. His charisma as he sings his favorites is as we know him to be - ONE & ONLY...No one does it any better...An entertaining hour with good music and dance. You will love this video...
