Director Paul Schrader has admitted to being drawn to personal and moral dichotomies in his work; small wonder he came to make this starkly comic exploration of Hogan's Heroes star Bob Crane, a man whose sexual obsessions led him to become something of a porno pioneer, documenting his exploits in voluminous home videos. Longtime David Lynch musical collaborator Angelo Badalamenti seems the perfect scoring choice, and here he turns from his usual stark, brooding soundscapes to indulge in some jazzy lounge sleaze, music whose garish-yet-hollow nature seems to perfectly echo Crane's collapsing soul. Buster Poindexter imparts suitably reptilian charm to the composer's tone-setting "Snap" (with lyrics by Schrader), while the remaining source material veers from the '60s proto-garage psych-punk of the Count Five's "Psychotic Reaction" and the crude, rambunctious R&B of "Psycho" by the Sonics to kitschy, thematic chestnuts like the O'Kaysians' "(I'm a) Girl Watcher," Barbara Mason's "Yes I'm Ready," a lugubrious take on "It Ain't the Meat (It's the Motion)" by King Cotton, and even Clem Snide's obscure, alt-rock-oriented "A Song for Bob Crane." --Jerry McCulley

BGs Best.......2005-03-08
I recently purchased this CD back in BG. Wow.....I am really impressed with this band. How cool is it to see a local band have enough material to come out with a Reworked/Remixed album. It's a nice mix of punk/new wave/electro-clash sounds. I suggest you check this band out live, they will blow you away (Howards Club H)!!

In general, a good album for various moods.......2004-02-28
If you're looking for sounds like The Faint, but a little bit happier, this is your band. There are some songs that get dark, but some sound like Nintendo themes, and "Wake Up Go To Work" is an up-beat satirical song that I think would be perfect for an Office Space sequel (if one comes). All in all, the album is a good listen all around. Some songs are a little shallow, but overall it is a great album.
strange and amazing.......2004-01-08
these guys are kind of inconsistant but in their own way. each song out of context sounds like a different great band, but together these songs make an amazing quirky album. they dont really sound like anyone, but defintly deserve your ear. buy it used if you can!
redefining electrorock.......2003-10-31
I was turned on to STYLEX through a friend from Seattle. I've never heard anything quite like this band. The songs are catchy, but unique... some of the songs could easily be played on the radio while others wouldn't work as well outside of the cd. It does have a strong cohesive element that makes the album into an experience rather than just a collection of songs. There is a track that can only be heard by rewinding track 1 past zero... it is perhaps my favorite part of the album because it shows an entirely different side of the band. For fans of Brainiac, Devo, Dance Disaster Movement, Hot Hot Heat.
Good stuff, you should buy it........2003-10-07
These guys are super tight but still make it unique through their driving appeggiation and vocal control. The live performance is in the recording and the quality of playing needs to be played LOUD.
WOW! I cannot believe this band!.......2003-09-24
This is one of the hardest working bands in America. They still have such a love and respect of their ever-growing fan clan that they still play anywhere there is an audience. Although this CD is sensational, it does not represent the intense experience of their live performance. Each member is an accomplished musician but they interchange their instruments as if they think and play with one, common brain. At The Drive In would have paled to the genius on this CD. You must buy it. You must buy it. You must buy it.
