Back to Basics, Christina Aguilera's first disc in four years, refines and clarifies the--let's call it "sexy"--aura surrounding this platinum firebrand. Here, the best belter in a class that counts Jessica Simpson and Britney Spears on its roll call has turned her attention to love songs: the supercharged and ubiquitous first single "Ain't No Other Man," for one, and the hushed stunner "Save Me from Myself" for another. That doesn't mean she's foresworn being nasty, though. Dive deep into this set, past the gorgeous crackle that frames the old-school jazz-, blues-, and soul-inspired tracks on the first disc, and you'll reach a playful and familiar raunch; "Candyman" celebrates a "one-stop shop" who "makes the panties drop" to a boogie-woogie beat, and "Nasty Naughty Boy" sends out a heated, big-beated invitation to "sip on my champagne/Cause I'm gonna give you a little taste/Of the sugar below my waist." Thoughtful listeners should snap out of their fascination with Xtina's undiminished yet newly un-tramp-like sexuality, though, because what they'll really want to focus on throughout these 22 tracks is the honest-to-God artistry. While the rock producer Linda Perry helps disc two pop in interesting and unexpected ways (check the muffled blues number "I Got Trouble" and "Mercy on Me," an obvious nod to Fiona Apple), DJ Premier, a mainstay on Jay-Z and Nas projects, pipes a batch of aural high-fives into the nostalgia-bitten first disc (the deep-down funk of "Back in the Day," the strut-strut early hip-hop sound of "Still Dirrty"). Their nudges aside, though, Back to Basics is all Aguilera's baby--she executive-produced, and she's found herself artistically. Nobody would argue, in fact, if she swiveled around the chorus to "Ain't No Other Man," written for her husband, and aimed it at herself: "You got soul, you got class/You got style, you're bada--." --Tammy La Gorce

4 out of 5 stars Back to Basics.......2007-07-11

Great CD. Love most of the songs. Some are OK, and real different.

4 out of 5 stars Unexpected pleasure.......2007-07-05

I never thought I'd like any of these bubble-gum-pop stars, but I found myself really enjoying the songs on this CD. And I was pleasantly surprised by Aguilera's voice -- much better than the rest of the mouseketeer pack.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greastest singers of all time.......2007-06-14

This album is fantastic. She is truley and talented musician and really sets herself apart form all of the rest. Keep on doing what your doing!

5 out of 5 stars Christina is on Fire!.......2007-06-01

I've always been a fan of Christina Aguilera...She never "over does" her music. I think she decide to change her look and sound due to the ridiculous criticism she recived for the "Stripped/2002" album. I though that album was musically geinus. So that brings me to "Back to Basics/2006". I love this album, though it would have done her better to release it as a single album and the drop of two songs. I can listen to Disc 1 all day long, with songs like: Ain't No Other Man, Oh Mother, F.U.S.S. (which by the way means F**k You Scott Storch), On Our Way ect... She has definatley progressed as an artist and can't wait until her next album!

Favorite songs:

1. On Our Way
2. Without You
3. Still Dirrty
4. Oh Mother
5. F.U.S.S.
6. Ain't No Other Man

4 out of 5 stars Does Xtina (or Baby Jane) steal a little? CD more suited for Alicia Keys.......2007-05-21

First of all, this is a very good cd(s). I love that she uses "old, old skool" samples in most of her songs. It is also very clear that she has talent and has taken control of her career(since "Stripped"). The slight problem I have is there is a lot to be said about white artists "taking" from the black experience when they have absolutely no relations within the black community. For example, on "Back In The Day," Xtina makes a reference to "Soul Train"-why? It's not like she could relate to thousands of black folk watching the program in question in the 70's. Also in that song (and on the album in general, one could tell she was heavily influenced by black artists of the day-"the innovators"[exclusively mentioned, i.e. Billie Holiday (Lady Day),(John)Coltrane, Etta James)]. In "Makes Me Wanna Pray" sounds of the black church experience are sampled onto that song with the gospel "call and responses." It's seems she tries so hard to imitate this, especially when she ridiculously calls out, "Thank you father!" Furthermore, many of Xtina's fans know that she was "home trained" in terms of her singing. This is also a copy of the great African-American singers (Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Patti Labelle) that were "home-trained" in the church (black folks couldn't afford private/otherwise singing lessons).
Overall, even though I believe this album is exceptional in alot of ways, Xtina should try to fine her own unique voice-this will truly make her an original.

She started her career as an inoffensive pop singer who sang of the benefits of getting "mellow" ("Have You Never Been Mellow"). Her transformation into a brazen aerobics sex-throb with "Physical" is as radical as what happens to her character, Sandra Dee, in the movie Grease. Three cuts from which ("Hopelessly Devoted to You," "You're the One That I Want," and "Summer Nights") are featured here. Add a few other hits, "A Little More Love" and "Magic" and you've got a full spectrum view of what she can do. From syrupy ballad queen to workout addict, she got it on the radio. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars Great One Disc Compilation of ONJ's work and Surprisingly Great Sound!.......2005-12-20

I have to say that for an unremastered album, the sound quality of this cd is remarkably good! I can only imagine how much better this would be if they would remaster it and make this a 20 track collection as I agree with most of the other reviewers here that some truly essential tracks are missing. That, I suppose, is inevitable given the volume of ONJ's work and the ability to only put so many tracks on one disc. Which is why I'm more forgiving of this version of her best of tracks and I'm going to say that the tracks here are a very good selection by themselves and there are 4 new tracks as well. ONJ has been very lucky in that she has had great songwriters write for here like John Farrar and great producers as well like David Foster enhancing her sound. There really isn't a weak track here and my favourites that are real gems of songwriting and performance are "Magic" (the great guitar harmonics still gives me goosebumps everytime), "A Little More Love" (one of the best bass lines ever composed) "Sam" (a great love song and written by one of the original members of the Shadows!)"Have You Never Been Mellow" and "I Honestly Love You" This is a very good ONJ compilation and for the price, 17 great track selections and surprisingly good sound quality a great bargain indeed. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Olivia Newton-John; Back To Basics 1971-1992.......2005-06-01

Olivia Newton-John compilations have been in this household since the 70s and all I can say is she has always had songs that I enjoy listening to. To this day I still own her O.N.J. Greatest Hits MCA Records Inc. LP from 1976. Part of the tunes from that album are on this CD but not all. In other words the biggest problem I have with this 1992 Back To Basics disc is there's to many of her hits left off. Let Me Be There, Come On Over, Don't Stop Believin, and, Xanadu, are just four that are not here however there are several on this CD that most of you will recognize like, Physical, I Honestly Love You, Sam, If You Love Me (Let Me Know), and the sexy tunes, A Little More Love, and, Magic, plus it also has three songs from the highly popular motion picture, Grease, and they are, Summer Nights, You're The One That I Want, and, Hopelessly Devoted To You. There is also a nice catchy little tune on here that deserves honorable mention and is also pleasant to listen to being, Deeper Than A River, so I have to say that this is a decent seventeen track single disc that still packs a punch.
Of all the great songs Olivia has gave us over the years I still gotta say that my two favorites are songs with a country flavor from her earliest days and they are 1973s, Let Me Be There, and 1974s, If You Love Me (Let Me Know), and like I stated above, Let Me Be There, is not on this disc so I still have to listen to my ole O.N.J. Greatest Hits LP to hear that one. For years; when I would listen to one I would also listen to the other because they are back to back on the ole LP.
For Olivia I give five stars however due to some of Olivia's hits being missing I can only give this compilation three stars which rounds out to four. I can handle a few of her hits not being on this disc and you probably can to However; Am I aggravated at myself for purchasing this CD without one of my two favorite tunes by Olivia on it? Yep! and I can't get any more basic than that.

3 out of 5 stars Probably only worth getting for the new songs.......2005-04-09

When looking at Olivia Newton-John's career, one must look at it from the perspective of her as a vocalist. You aren't going to find a lot of songs where Olivia is going to be the songwriter - and you aren't going to find her playing a lot of instruments. Olivia does what she does best - provide some outstanding vocals. Therefore, Olivia is going to have a strong reliance on good songwriting and good supporting musicians. What a lot of people probably don't remember is that when Olivia started out as a vocalist in the 1970s, she came up through the Country and Folk Music ranks. Olivia's crossover into a mainstream/pop artist would coincide with her film debut in the movie-version of "Grease". That film would establish her as a Superstar. However as fast as Olivia's Star rose, she would fall into oblivion by the end of the 1980s. However, Olivia's successful career has resulted in some nice collections of her vocal work. One such collection is "Olivia Newton-John: Back to Basics - The Essential Collection 1971-1992". It serves as a reverse chronology of Olivia's work starting with 1992 and going back to her early days as a Country artist.

There are two things that set "Back to Basics" apart from many of the other Olivia Newton-John compilations that are available today. For starters, it contains four new recordings that are unavailable on any of the other greatest hits sets. The other thing is that this compilation goes in reverse chronological order. Normally I prefer my Greatest Hits collections to have the tracks arranged in chronological order. This allows me to see how the artist has progressed and evolved over time. "Back to Basics" does the reverse. While I still would have liked to have seen this in regular chronological order, I found the reverse order to be an interesting twist. It fits very nicely with the title "Back to Basics".

"Back to Basics" isn't the most complete collection out there. While it does contain some nice songs, there are some very good Olivia songs that are missing. The songs I would have liked to have seen included are: "Don't Stop Believin", "Let it Shine", "He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother", "Come on Over", "Take Me Home Country Roads", "Me and Bobby McGee", "Don't Cry for me Argentina", "Heart Attack", and "Make a Move on Me"

As mentioned, there are several other Compilations out there. The following lists some of the more popular compilations. Here are some important notes when looking at these compilations:

"Greatest Hits": This collection contains 12 songs covering all of the albums before "Grease". The songs on "Back to Basics" that precede the "Grease" songs are all included on this collection"

"Greatest Hits 2": This collection contains 10 songs from "Grease" to "Physical". While "Back to Basics" contains 7 songs from this period, "Greatest Hits 2" doesn't contain "Deeper Than the Night" or the duets with John Travolta - "You're the One that I Want" and "Summer Nights".

"Magic - The Best of Olivia Newton-John": This is a 21-song set that covers Olivia's career through 1983's "Twist of Fate" (the point where Olivia's career went into decline). All of the songs on "Back to Basics" (with the exception of the four new tracks) are contained on this collection. In addition, this collection contains the "Grease Mega Mix" that gained popularity a few years ago.

"The Best of Olivia Newton-John": This is a 18-song collection that goes deeper with Olivia's early work (i.e. early to mid 1970s songs).

As mentioned while this is not the most complete collection, it does contain four new songs by Olivia. I wouldn't do "handstands" for these new Olivia songs, but they aren't bad. Olivia gets some help from some industry "names" for these songs:

"Deeper than a River": This song was written and produced by Diane Warren. You can hear the maturity in Olivia's voice on this light pop-ballad song.

"Not Gonna Be the One": This is another light pop-ballad song. It almost has a 1990s Bee Gees feel to it.

"I Want to Be Wanted": This song is kind of a throwback song to Olivia's Country Music days. This song features a Pedal Steel Guitar giving a real nice country feel to the song. Robbie Buchanan, a well-known studio musician keyboardist is on this track as well.

"I Need Love": While not a total "Dance Song", this song has a definite R&B/Dance feel to it. To some extent - there even is a bit of Funk to it. Much of this is due to the fact that Giorgio Moroder is the producer of this song. Surprisingly, I found this to be the strongest of the four tracks. Olivia pulls this off well.

I was glad this song contained "Twist of Fate". While this song did mark the beginning of Olivia's decline, it is a Synth-Pop song and showed how Olivia came full-circle from her Country/Folk days of the early 1970s.

The liner notes are in the fold out fashion. One side opens up with a big picture of a 40something year old Olivia. The other side contains pictures of the albums from which each of the songs came from. Each of the song contains some brief credits. The four new songs contain the songwriting and production credits. While I did like the reverse chronology that is done on this collection, I felt "Back to Basics" was incomplete compared to what I could get on the "Magic" collection - in spite of the fact that this collection contains four new songs. Overall, if you are looking to get started with an Olivia Newton-John compilation, I'd recommend going with the "Magic" collection. I'd look at the other three collections if you are looking to go deeper with some of Olivia's greatest hits. I'd only look at this collection if you want to check out the new songs - or if you can get it a value price.

5 out of 5 stars I honestly love her...Really. Great Olivia collection.......2004-03-21

Despite starting with folk and country roots, Olivia Newton-John came to the forefront with her relocation to North America and retooled herself to more pop standards, despite winning a Grammy for Best Country Female Vocal for "Let Me Be There." No, there was one more Grammy to be won, and that was Record of the Year (1974) for the tearful heartfelt piano and strings "I Honestly Love You," definitely the best song here.

That was from the If You Love Me, Let Me Know album, and the country title track is also included. The basso male backing vocalist provide a good balance with Olivia's winsome pop vocals.

As for the rest, it's the requisite collection of hits, of which there are plenty, as well as four new songs. The first one was penned and co-produced by Diane Warren, showing she has something in her magic pen for O N-J. "Deeper Than A River" belongs squarely in the 80's tradition of dreamy pop ballads, complete with synthesizers and strings.

"Not Gonna Be The One" could easily belong on one her Totally Hot album, as there are similarities to this and "A Little More Love." Produced by her longtime producer John Farrar.

Her cover of Brenda Lee's #1 hit, "I Want To Be Wanted,"--who doesn't want to be?--is my favourite of the four new songs here, showing her ability to put forth great ballads haven't diminished with her Grammy winner. And with Peter Asher (Peter of Peter and Gordon) as producer, how can she go wrong?

"I Need Love" is 80's soul/pop and synth fills set to a funky bass backbeat, with some monologue thrown in. In an ironic reference to an earlier hit, she sings that she holding out for something more than physical. Clearly it's something more permanent: "I'm not looking for a bandaid on loneliness." Aren't we all? And this is the most un-Moroder sounding Giorgio Moroder production I've heard.

In a twist of fate, many of her best-known songs turned out to be soundtrack hits. And because of that, N-J gets tarred with the epithet 70's cheese when many are asked to classify her. Two of them were from Grease, both duets with John Travolta. The bouncy "You're The One That I Want," penultimate number in the movie with the catchy bass setting the rhythm of the song, and a big hit in the US, spent nine weeks at the top in England. "Summer Nights," a song placed clearly in the musical genre, also went to #1 in the UK. The other #1, "Xanadu," is not on there, but "Magic" also from that movie, is.

Of the other movie tracks, the fast-paced pop of "Twist Of Fate," from Two Of A Kind, her second teaming up with Travolta, with its racing electropop bass synth and fuzzy guitar, definitely shows her staying power in 1983, and as far as this collection went, as material from Soul Kiss and The Rumour are excluded. The other, from Grease, is her soaring strings and steel guitar ballad, "Hopelessly Devoted To You," showing a mixture of pop and country instruments.

In the US, one of her last gasps at greatness was the smart and punchy title track to her "Physical" album, but singles like thatand lines like "let's get physical/let me hear your body talk" showed her embracing the naughty Sandy side of her. Small wonder the album cover, showing her flushed from an exercise workout, was mistaken for...well, physical things.

From Don't Stop Believin' (1976) comes the melting strings ballad "Sam." And from the previous year, "Have You Never Been Mellow?" taken from the album of the same name, was a leisure mid-paced number with strings, and showed Olivia adding her two cents to the feminist bandwagon: "someone else be strong" or "comfort from inside," reflecting the inner spotlight people began turning on in the 70's. Another song from that album is the country tune "Please Mr. Please," a pleading request to someone not to play a certain song for fear of being reminded of a past love.

Despite the subtitle 1971-1992, the earliest songs here date from 1974's If You Love Me, Let Me Know. For a first-time listen at Olivia, much recommended, and if you love her stuff, let me know. If not, let her be.

4 out of 5 stars It's Three! Three! Three Hits Sets in One!.......2004-01-10

Olivia Newton-John's career can neatly be encapsulated in a few separate phases: early pop/country hits ("I Honestly Love You," "Have You Never Been Mellow"), a big splash in a cheesy movie ("Grease") with the corresponding hits, the sexy pop hits that followed ("Physical", "A Little More Love") followed by a gradual exit from the charts. (Sounds a lot like Sheena Easton - I suppose "Miami Vice" could substitute for "Grease").

I could easily put together two or three CDs worth of chart hits from Newton-John, but Geffen Records didn't offer me the chance, so this one-CD mishmash, featuring virtually no liner notes whatsoever, will have to suffice. It's missing some pretty good songs ("Suddenly," "Heart Attack") and some not-so-great ones ("Soul Kiss," "Tied Up"), but they bagged most of the good ones, including "Twist of Fate," which had basically been unavailable to those who didn't think to buy the "Two of a Kind" soundtrack on CD. Four nondescript songs recorded for this CD are included as well. This covers virtually all of her career, and most fans will accept it as such.

Late note: Universal's "Magic - The Very Best of Olivia Newton-John" now supercedes this set, as it includes all of these songs (save the four newly recorded tunes) and adds "Let Me Be There," "Heart Attack," "Make a Move on Me," "Xanadu," and "Suddenly."

5 out of 5 stars A Gem Of Modern Soul Music!.......2002-04-11

Guitarist Ron Smith starts things off nicely with his fluid, ringing intro to "Nobody Knows What You Feel Inside" and the effortless, jazzy flow of this opening song is just one of the many pleasures afforded listeners on this, Maze's last (as of this writing) studio LP. For years these gentlemen have held the banner high for the preservation of 'real music' and true talent and they have an avid supporter in me. I've had the pleasure of seeing Maze live in concert 4 times over the past decade and I've never been dissapointed! These cats ROCK THE HOUSE! and while "Back To Basics" emphasizes their softer, more reflective style, it's still an amazing record. No one sings a ballad with more soul, conviction and ease than the amazing Frankie Beverly and "....Basics" is full of such lovely numbers, in fact two of his best love songs follow one another on this LP, the bass heavy groove "Love Is"(featuring a nice solo by keyboardist Philip Woo) and the progressive jazz/soul of "The Morning After" anwell deserved R&B hit. "Laid Back" is an exemplary funk workout in the best Maze tradition and ends side one on a high note. The jittery, uptempo "What Goes Up" is another winner, but the true centerpiece of this collection is the languid, gorgeous "In Time" which manages to sound both socially relevant and romantic at the same time, it's a beautiful, heartfelt performance. "....Basics" was the last LP of all new material issued by this band is a welcome addition to any music library, regardless of genre. There is truly something here for everybody especailly those who enjoy authentic soul music. This is a modern classic by a criminally underappreciated band.

4 out of 5 stars Great and politically correct.......1999-08-31

Frankie Beverly has proven to be one of the world's great soul musicians as Maze has always been the masters of soul music. The Song "In Time", I think is one of the best peace song in the world today. If all politicians of this world were to listen to this song, the world would be a better place today. Yes, In Time, we can make this planet a parade.

Best known for his work as a soundtrack composer (The Last Emperor, Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence) and a founding member of avant-rockers Yellow Magic Orchestra, composer Ryuichi Sakamoto gets "back to the basics" with this album. Of course, "the basics" here involve simple impressionist-inspired piano ditties that often sound more like diluted Vangelis than compositions from the cutting edge. But that's OK, as long as you consider this as relaxing background music and not the shape of classical music's future. BTTB was a hit in Japan in 1999, especially because of the single "Energy Flow" (a piece that Sakamoto admits was originally written as a commercial jingle). This release features one new track ("Reversing") and plenty of other soothing, melodic works. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars Pleasant. Light. Excellent background/mood music........2003-07-08

BTTB - Back to the Basics - is an album I bought after my daughter mentioned she liked the melody of one of the pieces ("Chanson"). I've never regretted it -- it is such a mellow, enjoyable collection of relatively simple piano pieces that it can brighten quiet days or provide an escape from noisy ones. I agree with other reviewers that it is not exciting. It is not meant to be.

5 out of 5 stars Back to "Back to the Basics".......2002-03-07

It's somewhat difficult to describe the impression "BTTB" made when I first listened to the album nearly two years ago, but in the very least I can say this: it was, at the time, my single inspiration for learning the piano and proved an accessible gateway into the music of Romantic and Contemporary Classical. For this reason alone I'm deeply indebted to Sakamoto. Yet rather than persuade with articulated opinions....

"BTTB" is nearly a tribute album to Sakamoto's classical influences. Erik Satie, perhaps the single most influential composer on Sakamoto's piano style, can be heard all over the album. Most noticeably on the very French-like "Opus," "Lorenz and Watson," "Chanson," and the nearly Bach-like Chorales. John Cage is also emulated more conspicuously on the album's prepared piano pieces (particularly "Sonata," which sounds very much like Cage's fifth sonata for prepared piano which, as coincidence would also have it, was sampled on David Sylvian's "Pollen Path" from "Dead Bees on a Cake" featuring Sakamoto). But two Romantic composers seem to be more carefully hinted at: a tilt of the hat to Brahms on the beautiful "Intermezzo" and towards Ravel on the challenging "Sonatine" and "Bachata." Yet Sakamoto draws no more heavily from his classical influences than his own output. "Energy Flow," "Put Your Hands Up," and "Railroad Man" are new piano arrangements of recent commercial compositions and are all uniquely Sakamoto, except perhaps for "Aqua," a simple piece originally composed for his daughter Miu's album, but no less beautiful than the more sophisticated compositions. "Snake Eyes," the main theme for the film of the same title, was also recorded as bonus material along with the playful YMO fanfare "Tong Poo," here in a new two-handed piano four-hands arrangement courtesy of a little computer processing. And the too often over-looked "Reversing," a unique track to the otherwise castrated international release, is in my opinion a hidden gym.

It's also worth mentioning a little more clearly the differences between the numerous versions of "BTTB." The album was originally released in Japan sans "Energy Flow," "Put Your Hands Up," and "Railroad Man" (which were released separately on the enormously successful EP "ura-BTTB") and featured several tracks not included on the international release: "Distant Echo," "Do Bacteria Sleep?", which features, oddly enough for a piano album, a Mongolian mouth harp, and the prepared piano piece "Sonata." "Snake Eyes" and "Tong Poo" were later included as bonus tracks on the Japanese reissue. For fans of Sakamoto's music, I would recommend buying the import "BTTB" featuring the bonus tracks along with "Ura-BTTB," but you very well might want the international release for "Reversing" alone. Yes, that is how they get you.... Oh, and "Choral No. 3" can be heard in Sakamoto's opera, so I also recommend any of the many, many releases of "Life." Otherwise, the international release provides a decent "best of" from the wealth of piano music either originally composed or arranged for the album.

4 out of 5 stars Ambient, soothing, different........2001-11-04

I received this album on MD a few days ago and have been enjoying it ever since. From the first three tracks, things seem to get progressively more experimental, going a little more conservative with Aqua, and the 4-hand wonder Tong Poo.

Tetsudouin (Railroad Man) is a very poignant piano piece and that, along with Energy Flow, Aqua and Tong Poo are my favourite tracks on the album.

It gets a little samey near the middle but other than that, it's quite good. Ryuichi Sakamoto is also evidently masterful at the piano, as well as technopop...

4 out of 5 stars Great piano solo album, from a great musician.......2001-04-14

Ryuichi Sakamoto has written some great film scores in his time, and from his solo works come a collage of music styles. His mastery of the piano shows its face in some songs, and is amiss in others, but each piece still has a mellow beauty to it. This is not a shocking piece, nor is it extremely exciting. Energy flow is definitely worth a listen though, and it's likely the best song on the CD. If you are new to Ryuichi Sakamoto I would recommend first buying his CD "1996" first. His compositions combined with the strings on that CD are heart stopping, and nothing short of amazing. This CD left me unsatisfied because I know what he is capable of, but his genius shown threw a few times, which is still enough to justify the album to me.

4 out of 5 stars nice, but hardly exciting.......2001-02-26

(3.5 stars)

I heard Ryuichi Sakamoto for the first time late one night, when I flipped the radio on to help me sleep. Sakamoto was playing the scores for "The Last Emperor" and "The Sheltering Sky" on the piano, and I was immediately struck by his virtuosity and the beauty of his music. A few days later, I decided to buy one of his CDs, "BTTB" (Back to the Basic). The music was simple, even charming, but overall, it did no justice to Sakamoto's skill. Most of the themes are flatly predictable, and even the most unusual pieces, such as "Prelude," don't arouse much interest. However, the CD does have some gems. "Tong Poo" makes the most of Sakamoto's skills, and "Intermezzo," a brooding piece, sounds remarkably Chopin-like.

If you want nice-sounding background music, then BTTB fills the bill. But if you're looking for something more exciting in the way of piano music, pick something by George Winston instead. Alternatively, try Sakamoto's other CDs, such as "Cinemage" or "Discord"-they capture a wider range of his talent.

This collection of feisty early recordings (the Between the Wars EP and the Brewing Up LP) features England's loudest socialist folkie, usually armed only with an electric guitar and a millennium's worth of outrage, attacking those in power (lazy journalists in "It Says Here," the eternal mining aristocracy in "The World Turned Upside Down") with precision and enough energy to make even the most dogmatic lyrics sound colloquial and persuasive. Bragg is a one-man Clash here, seeking to demolish all he can and then build a better world with his electric guitar and his righteousness as the only tools he'll need. --Jimmy Guterman

1 out of 5 stars Socialism Sells (Out).......2006-02-05

What I like best about Billy Bragg is his wonderful, quirky sense of irony. While he croons on about his working class `identity,' social justice, and the wonders of multiculturalism, he is careful to live in a posh mansion in 100% rural White Dorset - as far as one can get socially and geographically from the multicultural chaos, confusion, and high crime of his native Barking.

Well done, Billy, keep selling 'Socialism' and 'Multiculturalism' to Guardian readers and keep living the good life in nice, White, safe, upper class Dorset. No doubt Tony Blair will make you a Lord soon. Meanwhile all your fellow working class Whites who couldn't escape from the socialist multicultural chaos of Barking seem to have started voting for the 'far right' British Nationalist Party.

5 out of 5 stars Basically Brilliant.......2005-12-14

While anyone who has only heard more recent Billy Bragg music may find this hard to believe, this album is a stunner. It has both politically charged gets-you-thinking music like "To have and to have not" and it offers some beautifully romantic, love songs, like "The Saturday Boy".
This album should be regarded as a social document of what it was like to live in thatcherite britain. Superb.

5 out of 5 stars Understated Musical Genius..........2005-03-18

This album is possibly one of my favourite albums ever. Most of the plus points about this album have already been covered, in the previous reviews; so read through them (the positive ones) and take their points onboard.

I think, if you like folky guitar music and are prepared to put a bit of effort into this album (i.e. Give it a few careful listens) then I am sure you will benefit greatly from it.

If you want a couple of standout tracks to listen to before you make the purchase, try 'St. Swithin's Day' - a song of greaty beauty and poetic ideals; and 'Between The Wars' - a song of pure emotion and a fantastic guitar arrangement.

This album is a definite grower, and I'm sure after a few listens you will think the same thing.

5 out of 5 stars great cd.......2003-12-18

this is a really good cd i like the fact there is only a guitar yet the whole album is never boring. the standouts are new england, to have to have not and others but the whole cd is great this is a must buy for a fan of music

5 out of 5 stars The Milkman of Human Kindness.......2003-03-28

A lot of music is fairly culture- and even period- specific. Billy Bragg’s debut release is a prime example. For those sitting in damp, chilly bedsits in England in 1983, Spy vs. Spy will always have a special significance. Workers’ rights were being systematically dismantled by Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative government and soaring unemployment meant little or non-existent job prospects even for college graduates. A powerful new political voice was emerging. With the immediacy of Springsteen, the passion of the Jam, and a knack for heartwrenching melodies. Billy Bragg’s charm, of course, lay in his unpolished, cockney delivery and low-budget production values â€" just him and his cheap-sounding electric guitar. But what he played was gold. And we all shut up and listened. A New England is perhaps his most famous tune; the flagship, if you will, of a set of songs that depicted love lost or disillusionment against a backdrop of real-life, unromanticised situations ("I loved you then and I love you still/Though I put you on a pedestal I put you on the pill"). Springsteen is the only other artist who has managed this. To Have And To Have Not is a belting indictment of social inequality and the celebration of personal integrity underpinned by a beautiful melody. "Just because you’re better then me/Doesn’t mean I’m lazy...". Busy Girl Buys Beauty tackles the dreams and needs created by the consumer industry, "A busy girl buys beauty/ A pretty girl buys style/ A simple girl buys what she’s told to buy...". A great song but punctuated with UK-specific cultural references. Man in the Iron Mask is a delicate ballad about unrequited love ("For you I will be/ the man in the iron mask...") while Milkman of Human Kindness is Billy Bragg’s Bridge Over Troubled Water but with more down-to-earth imagery. Also check out Between the Wars and Richard. A word of warning: this is very rough and ready â€" guitar virtuosity and a mannered vocal delivery are not part of this man’s agenda. But good tunes, great lyrics and a big heart are.ˇ

1 out of 5 stars He advocates the killing of gays.......2007-01-30

In his music, Beenie Man advocates killing gays. More than
30 gays have been killed in Jamaica where he comes from.
His music has lots of influence there. In some cases mobs
sang his anti-gay songs while they killed a gay.
When asked to apologize and change his ways he wrote a song about how he
would not apologize. If someone advocated the killing
of Blacks or Jews, they would not be tolerated. It seems strange
that in the 21st century the world still tolerates someone
who advocates the killing of gays. Please don't support him by
purchasing his music.

4 out of 5 stars Beenie's gal and bwoy fans should already have this album........2006-10-12

I love me some reggae! Beenie is a reggae genius to all those who can't say anything nice about synthetic reggae or the man shouldn't say nothing at all. This is one of his best albums that I really enjoy. When it comes time for me to move away from radio music or anything mainstream I go international or should I say overseas.

Even though he goes deep with "Back Against the Wall," he still nails the naughty numbers like he was born to strut. "Doctor Mi Rate Yu" and "Grindacologist" is one of my favorites due to its catchy and irresistible chorus. The Timbaland-produced "All Girls Party" has some frisky beat and gives Beenie plenty of lyrical inspiration that fits rather nicely. "Dr. Know" with Jimmy Cheezetrix has an old and new vibe reggae that's on point as well as "If A never God", which is also a good song. R. Kelly is the only other singer who can actually pull off "Take off your Underwear," and get away with it but I couldn't help but to like this song.

Beenie also does a excellent job with "King of the Dancehall" an anthem that he puts out convincingly, and when he mimics Yellowman's faux Chinese on "Love All Girls," it's an admirable nod to an obvious influence. It's good to see Beenie moving away from just odes to booty with these little lyrical touches. I will also add "Get on Bad," and "Set Away," as standout tracks from this album.

`Back to Basics' is a keeper because you can't go wrong with the King of Dancehall.Even if you don't understand him lyrically the rhythm of this album will make up for it. Highly recommend to all reggae lovers and to those who are interested in this flavor.

1 out of 5 stars gay people die from hatred in Jamaica.......2005-10-22

BBC: Growing up gay in Jamaica
The homophobic lyrics of Jamaican reggae stars have hit the headlines, but what is the reality of being gay in a society where it is illegal to practise your sexuality?
Elephant Man's lyrics call for gays to be killed
Michael is verbally abused, threatened and spat at every time he leaves his home in Kingston, Jamaica, but the 20-year-old student considers himself lucky.
He has friends who have been beaten and stabbed because they are gay but, as yet, he has not been attacked. He knows it could happen anytime.
"My friends have been chopped up and all of that, you'd think they were a piece of meat in the slaughter house. It is terrible," he says.
Every time he goes out he is called a "battyman" - an abusive term for a gay man - and says the general attitude in Kingston is if you are homosexual you may as well be dead.
[A] major influence in people's lives is dancehall music. Its stars, including international artists such as Beenie Man and Buju Banton, are regarded as "teachers" by the young, says Michael. The music is steeped in homophobia, with lyrics from Buju Banton's Boom Boom Bye Bye, threatening gay men with a "gunshot in ah head" and Beenie Man's stating "I'm a dreaming of a new Jamaica, come to execute all the gays".

5 out of 5 stars "FIRE" .................... Another Classic........2005-06-05

Man Oh Man. Just when prople think that Beenie Man is Done he comes out with another hot album. He really went Back to the Basic Beenie. He really shows his domination of dancehall through out the years with all of the major production on the album. He has "Dude" on the Festa Riddim by Mad House, "Good Woe on the Coolie Dance Riddim, "Love All Girls" on the Ching Chong Riddim by Black Shadow, "Doctor Mi Rate Yu" on the Mad Guitar Riddim by Don Corleon and "Dr Know" on the Pretty Pretty Riddim. My favorite songs have to be "All Girls Party", "Set Away" and "Get On Bad". This is a classic CD

1 out of 5 stars The most homophobic artist alive.......2005-05-27

People seem to look past Beenie Man's extremely homophobic lyrics. In the song "Damn", Beenie Man states "Well I'm think of a new Jamaica, me come to executve all of the gays". How can he get away with saying something like this. Eminem got so much attention for his homophobic lyrics on his sophomore album, but at least his lyrics weren't as serious and homocidal as this. Eminem just made jokes. Eminem kind of got the reputation of saying crazy things. Threatening to murder his wife, talking about raping his mother, people learned that Eminem was known for saying outrageous things that obviously shouldn't be taken seriously. Eminem is like a comedian, Beenie Man is not. Plus, who did we see perform with Elton John??? Who gave Elton John a big a** hug after their performance??? Beenie Mans seems much more convincing when his homophobic and homo-homicidal lyrics are heard. Beenie Man has recorded numerous songs about his homophobic views, which are much more offensive than anything Eminem has ever said. Another song that supports this, is Beenie Man's "Bad Man, Chi Chi Man", which suggests that you should be proud if you are hederosexual ("If you nun chi chi man wave your right hand and [NO!], if you nun lesbian, wave your right hand and [NO!]"). The following lyric, is percieved to me as him stating that a gay man is actually worse than a murderer, and murderers go to jail and become gay men ("Some boy will go a jail fi murda tun badman chi chi man"). The word "tun", if precieved differently, can give an entire new meaning. Does he mean "ton" or "turn". If he means "ton", he could saying that a man should have the right to kill a "ton" of people who happen to be gay, and not go to jail. In of the verses he gives in the homosexual sterotypes (And yuh seh chi chi man have one special code / Now we see yuh inna video and a naked man pose / Yuh all a gi him money fi tek off him clothes). What the hell is this all about? All gay men aren't porno stars and strippers, what the hell. Out of all the gay people I know, I don't know ANY that are strippers or porno stars. All of these lyrics are much more offensive then Eminem jokingly saying "I was only checking the mail...get it..checking the male". Beenie Man is obviously a closed-minded homophobe, just like our president. I suggest to anyone who is NOT homophobic, AVOID Beenie Man's music. I still can't figure out how he was able to collaborate with Janet Jackson, whom has completely opposite views, as you can here in here song "Free Xone" in which she supports gay people and encourages people to be who they are and not follow any rules, as well as encouraging people to be excepting and open-minded of others. Janet must have been anaware of Beenie Man's homophobic, closed-minded, and intolerant views when she collaborated with him, on the song "Feel It Boy". Beenie Man has also collabrated with people like Wyclef Jean, Lil' Kim, Mya, Jon B., and others. All who I'm pretty sure aren't homophobic, but have no proof, I just hope that they aren't, and don't get the vibe that are. Yeah, so Lil' Kim says "faggot" and stuff, but she doesn't hate gay people. I read an article about how the gay community is so found of Lil' Kim, and she was interviewed about and didn't seem to have any type of problem with gay people. I know for a fact that neither Jon B. or Mya is homophobic. But anyway, that's kind of irrelevant, I just find it interesting that he's collaborated with all these people, when he's saying this crazy things that none of these artists agree with. AVOID BEENIE MAN!!!

4 out of 5 stars Good CD's!.......2006-03-01

This mix is really worth buying for fans of house music, as it looks like it has been discontinued. The first disc is where you'll find more of the throwback tunes, very retro sounding, but at the same time, very groovy and smooth. Definately a very good mix, but track 8 just didn't work for me (easily remedied by just pushing skip once), my favorite tracks are 3,4,6,and 10. The second disc adds more of the progressive house sound, more variety (mostly house, some tribal, and even a little trance) and ultimately is my favorite of the two. I agree with another reviewer that 'Work That Body' is a sexy tune, and I especially like how Danny mixes the vocals and beats in with the funky grooves of Belgian Resistance. Can't really single out a favorite track, because they are all awesome, but the last track is quite unique (in a good way). Overall, the flow on both cds is just terrific, would give it 4.5 stars if I could, but it just isn't quite a five-star mix in my eyes.

5 out of 5 stars Tenaglia remains true..........2004-10-15

Even though he is frequently noted in liner notes and even though he is often imitated and even though so much of the techno scene sounds the same, Tenaglia has a way that makes him stand out.

As much as the techno gods (or is that geeks?) claim new, innovative, progressive and on and on, after a while, it all sounds monotonous. Enter Danny Tenaglia. Back to Basics is an apt title, not only paying tribute to the club Basics, but also returning to the roots of his sound. Even though it is not progressive, even though it is a throwback to the 'old' sound, it still sounds incredibly fresh. He has a sound all his own and nobody mixes tracks any better.

This is one to throw on any time you tire of all those who look to this music as some form of higher art and try way too hard to make it more important than it is. Cut through all of those labels and definitions. As he notes in his liner notes: Some call it 'trance' -- I say just DANCE!

5 out of 5 stars True Genius.......2003-10-22

I've had this album since it was first released in the UK. Not only is it performed by a master of his craft, it is the 10th birthday celebration release of the finest club in the north of England. BacktoBasics has now been a Leeds institution for almost 12 years, and will always be my first choice for a smooth, funky, deep, sexy house vibe. Danny Tenaglia fits the Basics mould like he made it himself. The mix mastery of this double collection is simply breathtaking. All mix CDs promise to take us on a journey over a period of time, but none has quite delivered that promise in comparison to this selection of tunes. Danny takes us from smooth and mellow vocal house, with the superb Do It Now and those delectable bongos teasing us into something more tribal, then on to funky, then onto deeper and more twisted rythyms and vocals. Cass' 'Fever Rising' never fails to chill me with its insistent beat and spectral electronic noise. Then onwards and more sexy, until the final, shivery climax.

3 out of 5 stars lame.......2003-09-06

Danny Tenaglia... not impressed. There are a couple dope tracks... dubtribe, catch that boat, stop fooling around; however, there are some "raver" tracks... NOOOOOOOO! You'd think someone who has access to sooo much music would spin some dope beatz but that is not the case. Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars SHE WAS SNUBBED WITH GRAMMY NOMINATIONS. Should have rec'd "Album of the Year" nod............2007-01-09

Christina has been robbed/snuffed for not getting nominated for Album of the Year. What a slap in the face and dishoner that this masterpiece was not recognized for this most prestigous award. This is an absolutely phenominal album. What is so amazing about it is that she pays homage to the sounds and artists most popular in the 40's, 50's, 60's era's, and at the same time she brilliantly managed to fuse them with a yummy smorgasbord of today's modern day pop/r&b style that is appealing to listeners of all ages. This achievement is uncommon in today's music scene. What makes Christina unparalleled to her counterparts is her ability to be different and step out of the box by creating music that is unique, passionate, mature, authentic, intellectual, fun/upbeat, emotional, and overall brilliant. Every track is authentic music created with actual instruments - not a manufactured sound created in a studio with sophisticated computer and studio equipment. This album is REAL music. I also cannot forget to mention her voice, which in itself is unparalleled. It soars to the Heavens. She is an amazing talent and artist, and although I am happy that she was at least recognized for 2 nominations - it's a real shame that she was snubbed when you consider that some of her counterparts were nominated for several categories, but their albums are simply manufactured by advanced studio equipment and don't contain an ounce of authenticity. Really pathetic. What's up with that Grammy's. It's an injustice.
