A moody, melancholy singer with a haunting voice, Christy McWilson won well-deserved plaudits for her 2000 debut, The Lucky One. Her follow-up, Bed of Roses, doesn't plow any new ground, but it's just as appealing, with soul-baring confessions set to surprisingly upbeat country-tinged pop played by producer Dave Alvin, R.E.M.'s Peter Buck, the Young Fresh Fellows' Scott McCaughey (McWilson's husband), and others. McWilson used to sing with the Seattle alt-country band the Picketts, but as a solo artist, she has more in common with Sandy Denny than Patsy Cline. If you didn't already know that McWilson suffers from depression, it wouldn't take very long to figure out: the sad "Sheep Song," the bleak "Bed of Roses," and the wistful "Not a Day Goes By" all deal with the pain and suffering of madness. Even her choice of covers--Moby Grape's "8:05" and the Youngbloods' "Darkness, Darkness"--reveal McWilson's penchant for misery. Yet for all its doom and gloom, Bed of Roses is a singular pleasure. --David Hill

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.

If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."

Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.

5 out of 5 stars Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18

The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars He's done it again.......2002-07-15

Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.

This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.

Way to go Michael, you've done it again!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10

There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.

This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.

This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!

I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Amazing Collection of Songs!.......2004-12-22

I first heard Christy McWilson sing "The Serpentine River" while I was driving my truck around the Seattle area one morning. The song was so amazing that I had to write it down and check out this singer on the web. I promised myself that someday I would buy this CD. Once I picked it up, I couldn't believe just how amazing it was. If Christy McWilson were a painter, her canvas would stretch a city block! Her songs are so strong and powerful that they seem to make the stories contained within them seem enormous in depth and scale. They empower their characters and the themes centered around them. The only question I'm left with is why isn't this talented woman a major recording artist? I've heard so much music over the years, but rarely have I ever listened to anything as amazing as the songs on this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Strong Set.......2003-04-12

Seattle singer Christy McWilson gives us a strong set for her second release. While I never knew her band the Picketts who released 3 recordings, Dave Alvin polishes the arrangements here to produce an excellent collection. Don Heffington's drums thunder on the opening track "Life's Little Enormities" as McWilson's strong voice comes across a bit like Linda Ronstadt. One of the best tracks is the midtempo "The Serpentine River" with Dave Alvin's solo electric guitar reverbing like classic Johnny Cash over McWilson's wistful melody. "805," a Moby Grape track, has Alvin's deep duet vocal blending with Christy, "I can't go on; it's useless to try." The other cover tune is Jesse Colin Young's "Darkness Darkness" where McWilson shows herself to be an excellent interpreter of this somber elegant melody. The title track is a toe tapper with McWilson's strong vocals floating airily over the musical commotion. Christy goes a bit retro on "Can't Stop A Train," sounding like a classic pop song. My favorite track comes at the end, "I'm going to spend my days staying up all night" she sings as the guitars crunch on "Tightrope." "Bed of Roses" is a strong set with Christy's voice and strong instrumental support. Her songwriting doesn't have great distinctiveness, leading to a somewhat faceless feel for the set. However, the strong performance points certainly make this a pleasant set, well worth the time. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars a VERY pleasant surprise.......2003-01-07

I knew nothing about Ms. McWilson other than the fact that producer Dave Alvin would be joining her onstage the night I went to see her play at a local club...and what a great show it was! I immediately went out and purchased Bed Of Roses and liked the CD even better. McWilson has a wonderful voice--she reminds me a bit of Marti Jones--and the album kicks off with several excellent tunes in a row, especially "Serpentine River" and "Lila Jean"...The title track is excellent as well, and "Can't Stop A Train" may be my favorite song on the disc. Most of the cuts were written or co-written by McWilson, though "Darkness Darkness" is a Jesse Colin Young composition (which is just a little TOO dark for my taste)...Overall, an excellent slice of modern roots rock/alt.country--the kind of stuff you simply can't find on commercial radio any more. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Fine Dave Alvin produced 2nd LP from rock/country vocalist.......2002-03-23

The Seattle-based McWilson (formerly of the Dynette Set and the Picketts) re-teams with producer/guitarist Dave Alvin and several supporting musicians (including Rick Shea and Peter Buck on guitars, Don Heffington on drums, and Chris Gaffney on accordion) for her second solo release. Familiarity has deepened everyone's confidence, enhancing McWilson's comfort as the album's star, and expanding Alvin's ideas for framing her voice.

The album uses wah-wah, fuzz and baritone guitar, jaw harp, accordion and psychedelic production touches to create a punchier sound than McWilson's debut. But whatever the instrumentation, McWilson's voice is at each song's center. Though compared to Patsy Cline in her press (and she certainly evidences a good helping of twang), her intonation brings to mind Connie Francis, but drawn with the melancholy of Françoise Hardy's early-60s sides, and a vocal waveryness akin to Kelly Willis. There's a fragility and sadness in McWilson's voice that extends well beyond the written lyric.

The album opens with a superb quintet of songs, encompassing rock, folk, ballads and country two-steps, propelled by hook-filled melodies and clever instrumental touches. "Lila Jean," provides a chiming epiphany about stagefright, and "The Serpentine River" matches McWilson's aching vocal with an underline of baritone guitar and accordion. "True Believer" sheds a ray of hope and hammers home the melody with a double-tracked chorus vocal. Moby Grape's "8:05" is served up as a duet with Alvin, intertwining McWilson's delicate vocal with Alvin's bottomless bass voice.

The remaining seven tracks include a harrowing contemplation of depression ("The Sheep Song"), mid-life crisis ("Bed of Roses"), and a cover of Jesse Collin Young's "Darker, Darker" whose intro threatens "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," before settling into a more Youngbloodsian groove.

While many of her contemporaries are settling into non-musical lives, McWilson is accelerating her juggle of family and career. Rather than pining for youth, McWilson draws upon the complexities of mid-life, marriage, motherhood and career to develop a lyrical perspective not often represented in pop music. She sings her mix of rock, folk, country and rockabilly with talent and conviction, backed by a superb group of players.

4 out of 5 stars First Mercury album - still finding their way.......2003-06-25

This was the first album the Statlers recorded after signing with Mercury records in 1970. It contains a mixture of covers done in their own style as well as a few originals. Although the title track is one of their signature songs; it is the haunting "Junkie's Prayer" that will knock your socks off.

This is a very listenable and enjoyable effort although it does not touch on the themes of faith and nostalgia that became their trademark in later years. Their two best 70's albums ("Carry Me Back" and "Originals") remain criminally unreissued.

Although this certainly is not the best album they ever recorded, it does provide an excellent showcase of a legendary act in their early years.

3 out of 5 stars it's calming and mellowing, yet makes you think...........2001-01-01

while the music seems to have a calming effect, it's a bit unsetling also. as the movie goes along and you want to scream what's going to hapen, then cry when things aren't right, that's how this is. it make's the emotions flow. it's a great thing to listen to if you are in the mood. if you don't enjoy this type of music, then don't bother with this one.

    2 out of 5 stars It's an interesting idea............2006-12-28

....but it ultimately fails. I just can't get behind it. Everything seems off tempo or out of tune, and the violin or cello that is supposed to portray Jon's voice is just annoying and sounds closer to a cat in heat than Jon Bon Jovi.

    1 out of 5 stars Bon Jovi???.......2004-01-21

As a huge fan of Bon Jovi, I was mistaken in thinking this had anything to do with the group as opposed to the group writing these songs at one time - It's as if a string quartet of some pretty good musicians recorded Jovi's songs with a fiddle as Jon's voice - I'm sorry, but I should have done without.

5 out of 5 stars A stunning and pleasant surprise.......2003-12-06

I was browsing the music section of a store in October and under the Bon Jovi listing, I happened upon this tribute album. I had never heard of this before, and being the rabid fan that I am, as well as having an appreciation for classical music, I decided to pick it up. I wasn't really sure what to expect from it, as Jon Bon Jovi's voice can not be substituted by anything.

With that being said, I was blown away by this album. While it is true that some songs (Bed of Roses, Always, I'll Be There for You) would naturally translate into the smooth flowing music created by a string quartet, the tracks originally sounding harder (It's My Life, Everyday, Lay Your Hands On Me) take on a flavor all their own.

If you have never listened to Bon Jovi before (shame on you two or three people), I advise you to listen to the original songs, then see how well they have translated into this form. For the rest of us, who already know how many faces have been seen and all of us who have been rocked, get this disc while it lasts.

    5 out of 5 stars TRACK LIST.......2007-01-03

Bed of Roses - "The Kissing Tree" by Dan Century Bed of Roses is a side project of My Scarlet Life keyboardist Preston Klik, recorded in collaboration with many musical friends and other MSL members. Preston, for those who don't recognise his name, is known for his session work - contributing to recordings by bands like the Smashing Pumpkins and Ministry - and his label, DivaNation, which has the potential to become the next Wax Trax or 4AD. The Kissing Tree is the first Bed of Roses album and it is decidedly different from My Scarlet Life. Bed Of Roses lacks the pop song structure and tremendous female vocals of Julie* and Christy of MSL. Like MSL the music displays a broad range of influence and an amazing talent. Preston orchestrates pianos, sitars, strings, guitars, chants, electronics, exotic percussion, the sounds of Chicago during a rainstorm (very cool) and even real parakeets, with a very experimental, purposeful, but never abrasive sound. Preston collaborators include Julie, Paul and Amy from My Scarlet Life, Lisa Feuer from black tape for a blue girl, and guitar legend Fareed Haque. The music, purposely so, has a truly "cinematic," emotion stirring feel. If you let yourself get sucked into it you'll definitely feel your emotions rising and falling with the music. In the liner notes Preston suggests you listen to the album with headphones on, perhaps to give the music your full attention, or so you can experience every nuance, but you'd be missing a lot if you didn't listen to this album in your car or through your stereo's speakers. Definitely share the experience with a friend. The Kissing Tree is the type of album you will want to listen to the whole record at once as the individual songs compliment each other in tone and mood. The album moves from song to song as a movie progresses scene to scene. It's a good record to chill out after a long night. A good record to "come down" to. It Glows In My Hand is the only song that stands apart from the rest - a trance inducing song with many layers of instrumentation including standout bubbling, popping synths, and some creepy spoken word from frequent DivaNation contributor TheImmortalSavant. The chord progression on the title track, the Kissing Tree, is real tasty, elegant and definitely inspirational. I personally prefer more density and electronics to the ambient and cinematic music I listen to. The album could use a little "weirdness" too, but that's how I like it. Fans of Bill Laswell and Brian Eno's more cohesive work will enjoy this album for it's experimental and collaborative flavor. Fans of My Scarlet Life shouldn't pass it up either. I wouldn't be surprised if Klik and his pals get commissioned to score some films. * Julie does appear on the title track, the Kissing Tree.

    4 out of 5 stars Truly Divine!.......2001-07-24

I was pleased with the bountiful variety of madrigals which were provided. The singers were quite good! Although, I could have have used much more presence within the bass parts. Also, "Hark, Alleluia Cheerly!" was not sung in its original key of e minor! After being exposed to many interpretations of "O Grief evn on the Bud" I would have enjoyed a more "swelling experience" for this album. Overall, the album provides a stellar and solid performace on the most popular madrigal works.

Boy, Lal & Ollie did good!

More elegaic than Once in a Blue Moon, just as affecting. Simple and complex.

What a great collection of songs.

5 out of 5 stars "Who wants a bed of roses anyway?".......1999-07-10

Lal Waterson first revealed the force of her songwriting with 1972's Bright Phoebus, followed by a few all-too-rare offerings over the years, culminating in two last records with her son, Oliver Knight. Her uncompromising songs and performances are high poetry, raising deep and soulful mysteries.

Bed of Roses sounds much like Once in a Blue Moon from 1996, which is cause for celebration. Oliver Knight's production and guitar accompaniment are spare and thoughtful. Other musicians and voices are used sparingly and carefully, too. For instance, at one point Jody Stecher adds a breathtaking few measures of congruent, crystalline mandolin.

Lal Waterson died of cancer in September, 1998. Even as we mourn this loss, we are so fortunate to have this album!
