Sometimes it's O.K.--even important--to put aside your reluctance to embrace artists who make teenage girls scream. It happened in 2006, when Justin Timberlake scraped the sludge off pop and left something shiny behind, and it's happening again in 2007 with Maroon 5. It Won't Be Soon Before Long, the L.A. band's sophomore studio disc, rode in on a crest of hype and crumpled expectations--fan reports had it that Adam Levine & Co. scrapped their signature pop-soul sound for something harder and darker. Not so. Shades of Prince, Hall & Oates, and Sting still color the Maroon sound (check out the spectacularly fizzy "Little of Your Time," as well as the first single, "Makes Me Wonder," a song catchier than fire), but they're made ever fainter here by the clamping down of five guys on what is essentially the most distinctive pop sound to emerge from a single band since the Bee Gees squealed into the mid-'70s. It Won't Be Soon squares hip-hop sensibilities ("Wake Up Call") with rock ones ("If I Never See Your Face Again") and stormy moods ("Can't Stop") with bittersweet ballads ("Better That We Break"). It's a disc destined to defy detractors and go on to greatness, elevating the credibility of teenage girls for years to come. --Tammy La Gorce

Global neo-soul rock superstars Maroon 5 are back with their much-anticipated sophomore album, It Won't Be Soon Before Long. The follow-up to the 10x platinum, Grammy-winning Songs About Jane will be "sexier and stronger," according to frontman Adam Levine, who looked to '80s icons such as Prince, Michael Jackson, and Talking Heads for inspiration. Recorded at home in Los Angeles with producers Mike Elizondo (Fiona Apple, Eminem), Mark "Spike" Stent (Bjork, Keane, Gwen Stefani), Mark Endert (Madonna, Fiona Apple), and Eric Valentine (Queens of the Stone Age, Nickel Creek), the album promises to be a louder take on the pop sounds of their first effort. "It's definitely aggressive, upbeat and pounding," says Levine.

The Wait is Over.......2007-07-13
This CD is a refreshing change to the status quo of pop/rock music. Maroon 5 is an awesome band. I look forward to their new releases to come.
Another good one!.......2007-07-09
Once again Maroon 5 has kicked out another good CD. Not one bad song on there as far as I'm concerned!
Not as catchy as Songs About Jane.......2007-07-09
I absolutely loved Maroon 5's first album, but this one doesn't quite do it for me. The lyrics are great, however, the song itself lacks original beats. I think they should team up with Timberland or another producer to improve the sound of the album.
I'm So Glad it's not SAJ Part II!.......2007-07-07
I love having a "little secret band" -- the garage band with a small following or something like that -- but Maroon 5 is definitely not that anymore. Normally I hate when songs go single and are blasted all over the airways (Beyonce's "Irreplaceble" a prime example -- I loved that song until I heard it every other minute), but I've even set "Makes Me Wonder" as my ringtone and I'm STILL not tired of it. I love that song, along with just about every song on the CD.
If you want something Songs About Jane-esque, I wouldn't advise this CD. This one is a bit edgier, and there's nothing really romantic about this CD (their only contemporary song that is is "Infatuation," but it's left off the CD and I had to get it elsewhere.) It's a nice mix of slower, smoother tracks and really upbeat rock-soul tracks. This CD just solidified my love for Maroon 5, and anyone with an eclectic taste in music should be satisfied with it, too.

Their last album may have given them a certifiable radio hit, airtime on VH1, and a Kidz Bop tribute, but listening to the follow-up to 2004's Good News for People Who Love Bad News, you might get the sense that the members of Modest Mouse are flinching at the spotlight. We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, the group's fifth full-length release, is denser than its predecessor with tunes that seem willfully harder to penetrate. Even the addition of former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr to the line-up seems incidental, as Modest Mouse's off-kilter sound stays largely intact. But keep listening and it becomes obvious that the band hasn't lost any of his pop bite, especially midway through with a sweep of terrific songs like "Missed the Boat," "Education" and "Little Motel." It's hard to tell if there's another "Float On" in the bunch. In fact, the first single, "Dashboard," is one of the weakest Isaac Brock has ever penned. With Shins James Mercer adding lovely vocals to "Florida," however, it hardly matters. --Aidin Vaziri
Customer Reviews:
Great Album, got me into Modest Mouse.......2007-07-09
This is the first review I've bothered to write for any product on a retail website, so that must be an indication of some sort. This is one of those albums where I actually like almost every song. Before this came out, I scoffed at my best friend's new-found liking for Modest Mouse. I found their older stuff a bit too outlandish (which is saying something after hearing this album) and fragmented.
The songs on this album just flow so nicely. My least favorite songs on the album are "Education," "Fly Trapped In A Jar," and "Parting Of The Sensory." The first two have the fragmented style and high-pitched, cracking vocals of Modest Mouse's other albums, and the latter has a very "experimental" feel. There is a lot of clashing of instruments; it sounds somehow less structured than the rest of the songs (often this is good, but it lacks structure, rather than being free of it, if you know what I mean).
Right now I'm listening to "Spitting Venom," one of my favorites on the album. The quick change from a steady strumming to full riffs and singing is certainly one of Modest Mouse's strengths.
It's OK for MM.......2007-07-08
It's not better than M&A, Long Drive, or LCW, but it's worth picking up. In time my rating might improve, but it seems just as likely that it will not.
I wouldn't start here, I'd start with M&A and LCW, then pick up Long Drive. Good News is also decent.
catchy, unique rock.......2007-07-03
I got this album after hearing "Fire It Up" on the radio, I love it. Sometimes it's kindof catchy and melodic, at other times it's loud and punkish. The diversity is truly a strength. The melodic guitar playing is really cool, and the vocals really stick with you. I can listen to it several times on repeat and not get sick of it.
The Ship went down Dancing!.......2007-06-19
Modest Mouse is one of those bands that gets better with age... no, actually, Modest Mouse is one of those bands who starts off amazing and continues to be amazing all through their lifetime...
This album is full of dancey beats, head-bobbing minutes of musical bliss and of course, Brocks voice is unbelievably strong and powerful in every song as usual.I think that if you are not accustomed to a voice like Brocks, that you can become accustomed with enough listening and then you'll realize how friggin' awesome this kind of music is. Or maybe it's something that you either like, or dislike.
But face to facts, this is one of Modest Mouse's best albums to come out. Every song is unique, each melody is worth every note. There are a couple of really hip dancey songs like the single, "Dashboard" and "We got everything now" which stun the ears. And I also love "Spitting Venom" because of it's gradual beginning and then sudden blast of energy, they are known for such things, it gets me every time! I have to say that "Spitting Venom" is one of my favorite songs and it's almost 9 minutes long. That's a long time for a song to be amazing, and trust me, it is. There are at least three songs that dont hit as hard as the others do, but they still keep the album balanced I think. This album is worth your money.
I hope this helped, a little.
I think I'd call this better than their last album.......2007-06-15
A lot of hype after the first CD made so much noise, and this new CD is a good followup.

Not only is The Nightmare Before Christmas one of the best musicals of the past two decades; it may well be Danny Elfman's masterpiece, successfully integrating his main influences (from Cab Calloway to Nino Rota) into a fantastic whole. The first disc of this reissue features the original soundtrack, its songs still teetering between dark humor and poetic flights of fancy; this so-called kids' music is at least as sophisticated and skilled as anything you're likely to hear on Broadway. The second disc includes demo versions of four songs on which Elfman plays and sings everything, and five new covers of some of Nightmare's best-loved songs. Marilyn Manson successfully applies his spooky Weimar-circus style on "This Is Halloween" while Panic! At the Disco's lushly orchestrated take on the same tune is closer to the original. Fiona Apple's poignant "Sally's Song" is enhanced by very nice string charts, and She Wants Revenge does a disco take on "Kidnap the Sandy Claws." Best perhaps is Fall Out Boy's cover of "What's This?" which sounds like an unexpected cross between the Beach Boys and Queen. A highly recommended set. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
His Halloween!!!.......2007-06-20
Well, disc 1 is Danny Elfman's classic soundtrack to the film that is of course great (goes without saying). Disc 2, to mu pleasent surprise was pretty cool as well. Marilyn Manson's cover of "This Is Halloween" is absolutely amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IMO, it's not only the best track on the album, but it is one of the best cover songs ever recorded in the history of history. I was almost certain that he would have messed that song up...but he really does an amzing job. Even if you hate Manson, ..you won't hate this song. As for the other covers, I liked Fiona Apple's cover of "Sally's Song", and I thought the She Wants Revenge cover of "Kidnap The Santy Claws" was a good eightees style presentation, kinda Depeche Mode-eske. The other bands on the disc all did an ok job, but it's really all about the Manson cover when it's all said and done.
DIFFERENT.......2007-03-26
THIS SOUNDTRACK'S PERFECT IF YOU'RE INTO ANIMATED MOVIES AND MUSIC!MANSON DOES AN EXCELLENT JOB ON HIS SONG: THIS IS HALLOWEEN! HIS VOICE HAS SO MANY DIMENSIONS IN THIS SONG.HIS MUSIC IS PERFECT WITH THE TITLE.
It's simply the best!.......2007-02-15
Both versions of "What's this?" are great! Danny Elfman had already conquered my admiration and respect with Batman's and The Corpse Bride's soundtrack, but The Nightmare Before Christmas is my number 1 for a bunch of reasons: the interpretations are awesome and the new versions in the second CD have profoundly delighted me. If you're an Elfman's fan, you won't be disappointed!
best 2-pack i've bought in a while.......2007-02-09
i will admit, i have been and will be a manson fanatic for a number of years. Nightmare before Christmas has also been on a consistent highnote for me even as a little kid when we got on VHS. so when i heard Danny Elfman on the radio talking about this thing a few weeks before it came out, i heard "marilyn manson will be doing a cover of "this is halloween", my heart jumped and i almost veered of the I-15. i bought two copies of it, one for myself and one for a friend who i knew would also appreciate it for the Panic! cover.
i will also admit i bought this cd without any hesitation, and only for that one song, and i must say it hit it right on the money. Marilyn Manson in my mind is the master of taking good, popular songs, and twisting them into something unique and that makes a statement (hearing him sing "boys and girls of every age, wouldn't you like to see something strange?" is rather convienient).
i also enjoyed the rest of the cds with more or less the same appreciation.
my only gripe with this cd is She Wants Revenges version of Kidnap The Sandy Claws. that was something i was looking forward to, and the signers monotone singing does little to honor the song. the background tune hardly resembles the melody it was taken from. in that song there were 3 distinctive voices, with SWR, you got one unchanging voice with no emotion. hell Beastie Boys coulda done a better job on this song.
A review.......2007-01-20
Seeing as I am an impulse buyer as well as a fan of this movie, I wasn't surprised to wake up one morning and find the package for this sitting on my doorstep. I listened to the second disc first and decided that it was OK. After reading some of the other reveiws I came to agree with some but disagree with others. Everyone has been saying that the Manson version of "This Is Halloween" was the best because it was scary and the Panic! version of said song sucked becuase it was too carnical like. If any of you remember the movie, the original song wasn't meant to be scary, but celebratory. I think Panic! captured that feeling best. Fiona Apple's song was beautiful, but I found that She Wants REvenge missed the mark a little. It had a good beat, yes, but it was too monotone for my taste. Fall Out Boy's cover is a kepper and has made it's way to my most played list. The demos are great, thought the demo of Kidnap the Sandy Claws kinda freaks me out when I remember that it's one guy doing three voices.

The Dave Matthews Band is moving its music forward incrementally. While Before These Crowded Streets offers more of the folky melodies and vaguely international rhythms that made this Charlottesville, Virginia, group a major record and concert draw, it also finds them adding subtle new colorings to the mix. Alanis Morissette guests on two cuts, "Spoon" and the disc's first single, "Don't Drink the Water"; banjo Bela Fleck steps in, too. Most intriguing, however, is the modernist string arrangement from the Kronos Quartet on the driving "Halloween." Matthewsat least partly fulfills his obvious hopes to lead something other than a jam band here; at the same time, Streets should keep his fans satisfied. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
wow.......2007-06-09
this album is amazing. i have been a fan of dave matthews band for a long time, and i never got this cd. i was hooked on under the table and dreaming, but when i got this, it became my all-time favorite cd. this cd is very different from any other of theirs. it is much more dark, and seems to have more worldly influences, which is shown a lot in "the last stop". also, the band goes into a long jam session on almost every song, which is really fun to listen to. what has always amazed me about dmb, and especially shines in before these crowded streets, is that every member of the band is just as important as the other. i personally think that everyone else in the band are better musicians that dave himself. he is, although, an amazing songwriter. here's a review of each song:
1. Pantala Naga Pampa- this song isn't much of a song, but it's good for what it is. you can find it played at the end of the D&T version of "jimi thing".
2. Rapunzel- this song shows how tight the band is together. it's played in 5:4 time, which is really tough. the whole song is tasty, and the bridge is a 6:8 turnaround with a great violin part. great song.
3. The Last Stop- this song makes a very large use of a middle-eastern scale. that's what makes it sound really egyptian, and although i really appreciate the influence, it's probably my least favorite on the cd. it is still a good song.
4. Don't Drink The Water- i really like this song. i like the live version better, because i think it has more energy, but this version is very good as well. i love the passion that the lyrics show and how the music describes it.
5. Stay- great single, although it's almost 6 min long. it's very catchy and has a black female vocal group singing in it. i love the two jams that the band goes into. dave is very good at describing feelings in terms of music, this one being love.
6. Halloween- This song is very funny. It sounds like dave is singing like he's frankenstein's monster or something. Sometimes it gets on my nerves, but it's musically a great song. really funny to listen to.
7. The Stone- halloween fades into just violins and stuff and flows into the beginning of the stone. that makes for a great intro. then the guitar comes in, and it's a very good guitar riff. this is the most dark of all songs on the album. it also has the best of all guitar riffs on the cd in my opinion, the verse, chorus, and transition back to the verse. it has a very long, awesome jam at the end and fades. amazing song.
8. Crush- I think this is my favorite of all dmb songs. again, dave describes love in the form of music very well. this is just a feel good song. the jam at the end blows my mind. tim reynolds, leroi moore, and boyd tinsley are all soloing at once. even dave has a few funky chords in the jam himself, the closest thing to soloing i think i've ever heard from him. also one of the best live songs by dmb.
9. The Dreaming Tree- I love this song. It has a great story and just a great feel to it. A great bass line (not as great as in crush) carries the song through the verse.
10.Pig- this song has a great message to not waste days away, and that we take tomorrow for granted too much. musically, it's not as good as some dmb songs, but it's still good.
11. Spoon- This song is very jazzy, and has a guest female vocalist. i'm not sure, but i think she is the girl that plays with damien rice. it's a great finale to the whole album, a great way to end it all off.
Bottom line is, this cd is great. it's a lot different from other dmb albums, but if you're more of the listener that just cranks it up and listens to it instead of playing it in the background, this is probably the one cd by dmb that is most enjoyable when you have it really loud. you have to listen to this whole cd at one time to get the full effect. if you enjoy this, i recommend sunrise over sea by the john butler trio.
fantastic............2007-03-27
It took me (almost) ten years to hear this great album! I can't believe I waited so long. The Dave Matthews Band has been a fixture at The Gorge at George concerts, in Washington, for several years now, and Dave, himself, was often seen down at Pike Place Market in my hometown of Seattle, Washington, playing acoustic sets for the public.....that was a few years ago. BEFORE THESE CROWDED STREETS features some of the finest and most eclectic cross-section of music genres I have heard on one album. It's hard to believe that this music was all done by one band. We hear ska, power metal, jazz, world and pop all stirred and then blended into a great musical smoothie.
Some of my favorite cuts include "Last Stop," which eerily illustrates what was to become of the relationship between the United States and the Middle East, only three years later, when 9/11 took place (chillingly prophetic), "Stay," which is an upbeat, fun, and calypso-inspired romp in the grass and makes you feel like the sun is shining even if you're listening to it in the pouring rain, "Crush," a beautiful jazzy love song, and "The Dreaming Tree," which is poetic, ponderous and devestating. There really isn't a "bad" song on here. Dave Matthews is a fantastic story teller and he wrote most of the songs himself. This album is an example of rock/crossover music at its best.....
Rocky Roads.......2007-03-27
Dave made a name for himself crooning about things like love, lust, longing, and belonging with an opulent and mossy voice. His first two albums swam with sultry and complex arrangements, production values so riotous and rambunctious that they were almost too much to handle.
"Streets" marked a shift in his band's sexily sour and dreamily dour demeanor. There is still the classic romantic chaos ("Rapunzel" and "Stay") and the seeping wonderment of his melancholy moods ("Crush," "The Dreaming Tree," and "Spoon"), and as before it's done with meticulous attention to every chord and spark, every pluck and quaver.
Here, however, Dave has chosen also to get really, really angry. He saturates those moments with just as much technical skill as ever, but gone is the lyricism, replaced by Dave ripping resentful and revenge-hungry tirades out of his throat as if they have been sawed into shape with a cheese grater. I'm not saying he shouldn't be angry (his vendettas are against the rape and loss of cultures/land and also sometimes against things more difficult to pinpoint); I'm just saying he's more skilled at singing about love and bittersweet loss than he is at growling about drinking water and "Halloween."
Not DMB's best album, but still good.......2007-03-15
There are some great songs on this album and some that are kind of strange. But, all in all, it's still Dave Matthews! It's still worth buying and listening to.
I still love this album.......2007-02-11
Ok first of all, I got into dMb in high school and have since then expanded my cd collection greatly, but I still keep coming back to this album and still enjoy listening to it to this day. This album is the quintessential dmb studio album in my opinion. It has the "listen to it all the way through" quality of 'under the table and dreaming' and the song writing quality of 'crash'. Personally, I enjoy bands like radiohead, smashing pumpkins, modest mouse, fugazi, the flaming lips, and the pixies...bands in my opinion who really put out albums that keep the listener entertained from beginning to end, and really give you alot to listen to. The thing about 'before these crowded streets' is that there is alot to listen to without bring things like keyboards and electronic effects into the mix. These guys are great musicians, and despite their frat boy following and mainstream success, this band still deserves your attention. This was the last studio album recorded with Steve Lillywhite as producer and although their recent albums have been some what disappointing, this album still has alot to offer (as does the band **here's hoping that their next album will be a return to something close to this album**). Albums like 'under the table and dreaming' and 'crash' are good too, but in my opinion this album is superior. This album is similar to 'under the table' but the songs have more diversity, and unlike 'crash' which in my opnion is just a collection of good songs, 'before these crowded streets' flows and actually takes you somewhere. If you enjoy this album, check out their live in Chicago cd.

Album Description
As we explore the depths of our "self", our "souls", through massage, relaxation, and other healing modalities, we gain experience and knowingness. The music from Detaching The World Vol. 1 is a transient, which allows for this knowingness to occur in a peaceful, tranquil, and comforting environment.
This CD has been created to provide over 60 minutes in running time without the use of vocals or percussion. Emil Gagliardi has introduced a new style of guitar called "The Nuit's Effect" named after its rich soothing textures and deep earthy tones. From the opening cut of "Tranquil Sunrise", Gagliardi's swirling guitar immediately sets the perfect mood for massage and relaxation. The density of "The Valley Beyond" swallows you up in a tapestry of color similar to a warm blanket while the hauntingly beautiful "Fallen Angel" resembles a fresh new day after a storm.
Gagliardi's vision of creating the perfect massage and relaxation music sets Detaching The World (Vol. 1) apart from all others. Its purpose is to serve gentleness and ease like the inhalation and exhalation of the breath.

Detaching the World Vol 1.......2007-06-27
I purchased this CD based on the reviews alone,In comparison to other meditation Cd's I own; this CD ranks far below. The music is in my opinion anything but relaxing. Not suitable for meditation.
Promising Debut by Ambient Guitarist Emil Gagliardi.......2007-05-23
Although guitarist Emil Gagliardi's debut CD was designed for massage, meditation, and relaxation, it is much more than that. The ambient release features soothing, New Age-style synthesizer sounds generated entirely by Emil's electric guitar. The result is not only a great therapeutic tool, but also a legitimate work of sonic art in the vein of Andy Summers' classic ambient guitar album, Mysterious Barricades. Emil Gagliardi is a guitarist to keep an eye out for. [...]
Relaxing Music.......2007-02-20
I have other "relaxing" CDs that really don't do the job. This one does. I actually bought it to listen to while I had some dental work done and it was very helpful!
Boss Time.......2007-01-10
I got this gift for my boss since he is always so stressed. He closes his door sometimes and pops in the Cd to relax. Thanks!
great work!.......2006-12-30
One of the most calming and inspiring cd's I've heard in a long time! I've always felt connected to the sounds of the guitar..now I can have the best of both worlds...guitar and meditation!

What an incredible debut EP!.......2007-05-11
Alex Church, the lead singer and founder of Sea Wolf, was a founding member of my favorite band, Irving. His songwriting skills are amazing, and this EP, Get to the River Before It Runs Too Low, showcases his ability to write beautiful and engaging songs perfectly. My personal favorite is You're a Wolf, but every song he writes finds a way to burrow into my subconscious. While I lament the fact that he is no longer with Irving, I rejoice in the beauty that is Sea Wolf and am so thankful he is still bringing new songs into the world. I can't wait for the full album that will be released this year! In the meanwhile, I'm so excited to see Sea Wolf play live - they blew me away when I saw them play the noise pop festival.

It's been more than 20 years since pianist Harold Budd's first full collaboration with guitarist Robin Guthrie's former group, the Cocteau Twins, on The Moon and the Melodies. Primed by their atmospheric collaboration on the score to Mysterious Skin, they pick up where they left off, sans the voice of Elizabeth Fraser, on a pair of matched CDs, After the Night Falls and Before the Day Breaks. Guthrie lays down his signature deep-echo guitar arpeggios and shimmering electric glissandos while Budd drops piano notes, each placed with the elegance and thought of a Zen garden. The latter, whose 2005 retirement appears to have been greatly exaggerated, has lately been stripping away the electronics and making an introspective solo piano music, often born from melodic fragments and languid improvisations. It's nice to hear them framed by Guthrie in an electric gossamer where melodies flutter like tattered cobwebs in the echoing wind. So it's not surprising that some tracks have a tendency to vaporize. Songs with a bit of grounding like "Seven Thousand Sunny Years," with its spare rhythm track and refracting guitars, tend to hold up a little better, while "My Monochrome Vision" just wanders into the drone zone. Of the two albums, After the Night Falls is more structured and formed, although Budd and Guthrie do wait until the last track of Before the Day Breaks to unleash a welcome slice of contrasting aggression with "Turn on the Moon." Totaling 81 minutes between them, I'm not sure why the albums couldn't have been condensed into a single disc, making a tighter, less diffuse statement. Yet both have more than enough moments of sublime melancholy and deep ruminations to provide a soundtrack for that long lonesome film in your mind. --John Diliberto

Cynical types will accuse Disney of milking the "greatest" concept until it's drier than Tinkerbell's fairy dust ("Supercalafragilisticexpealidocious," "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Da," and "Heigh Ho" were hits off of Vol. 1; "Bare Necessities," "It's a Small World," and "Some Day My Prince Will Come" stole the show on Vol. 2), but a glimpse of this installment's track listing is all it'll take to squash their suspicions. Once again running reverse-chronologically, Vol. 3 opens with Jonatha Brooke's gorgeously achy ballad "I'll Try," from 2002's arguably not-so-great Return to Neverland, and gradually reaches back through the years to re-raise the curtain on Toy Story 2 ("When She Loved Me," performed by Sarah McLachlan), The Lion King ("Can You Feel the Love Tonight"), Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews's classic "A Spoonful of Sugar"), Pinocchio ("Give a Little Whistle"), and a bundle of treasured others, bottoming out at 1933's "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf" from The Three Little Pigs. Vol. 3 is not without its weak moments--would a G-rated movie-goers' poll produce Beauty and the Beast's "Gaston" or The Hunchback of Notre Dame's "Topsy Turvy" on a hits list? Seems unlikely. Still, the bulk of these tracks are, as the included Little Mermaid song goes, "Part of Your World," and the spread of decades they represent proves their staying power. Don't expect Disney to latch the lid on its inexhaustible archives until a dozen or so of these records, each as strong as the next, beckon you back for more. --Tammy La Gorce

Timeless Disney Music.......2007-05-07
Nothing brings sweet recollection of Disney movies like hearing the wonderful songs. In an age where there so much music with no redeeming qualities, these Disney CDs are priceless. Wonderful for the entire family to listen to around the house or in the car while traveling. We can't help but sing along. We love that these are the original tracks from the movies! Wonderful! We now have all three volumes.
Disney songs are the best.......2006-03-18
I love the songs on this volume. I'll Try by Jonatha Brooke is such an amzing somg. I especially bought this CD fort that song but, was pleasantly surprsed by the rest of the playlist.
Great Disney Music.......2006-02-21
I have bought the first 2 volumes of Disney's Greatest Hits and the 3rd volume doesn't disapoint. My 2 young children love to listen to this CD and talk about the movies that they come from. A definate must have!
Not as good as Vol 1 and Vol 2.......2005-09-11
This Disney CD represents the "leftovers" that didn't make it on Vol 1 and Vol 2 of this series. Although it has some of my favorites, I don't listen to the entire CD often. Disney could have done a better job of editing the which sound files should make the cut on this one. Still, it's nice to have all 3 CDs.

By now, the list of late-career standards-coverers stretches a mile long--in addition to Rod Stewart, Barry Manilow, Smokey Robinson, and a host of less-successful others, add Gladys Knight to the tally. Don't just lump her in, though, because Before Me differs from its forebears in ways that won't let you forget it. Here is a flawlessly selected and executed exercise in nostalgia for all the right reasons: Knight, in a voice entirely undiminished, extracts the elegance from each of these legendary numbers and smears it all over the surface, something most listeners would expect only from a master stylist on the order of Tony Bennett. Yet the former Pip leader presides with a light touch. Replacing the powerful pop-soul that launched her legend with the swankiest, most black-tie jazz imaginable, she whispers her way through George and Ira Gershwin's "The Man I Love" and the candy-sweet lament "I'll Be Seeing You." Elsewhere, she smokes up the Lady Day classics "Good Morning Heartache," "The Man I Love," and "God Bless the Child," unintentionally turning the latter into a master course of vocal restraint. If "I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)" is the disc's wild card--Knight plays it light--the Duke Ellington stunner "Come Sunday," made popular by gospel legend Mahalia Jackson, is its five-star clincher: Knight punches her way through tirelessly, with a true believer's fervor. --Tammy La Gorce

Gladys What Happened?.......2007-05-17
What a snoozer! So much could have been done on this CD to refresh these standards AND display miss Knight's capabilities, so disappointing. Don't get me wrong, Before Me isn't bad, so much as "been done before". I adore miss Knight's past work, but perhaps her voice is not up to it now. This is definitely for her fans, so I'll just hang on to "memories".
Thank you Gladys!!!.......2007-05-16
Thank you Gladys, for doing justice to the great singers who came before you on this magnificent CD - a job well done!!
It took a very long time for this gifted artist (who has always been one of my favorites from the Motown era and beyond) to record these great songs from the likes of Ella, Dinah, Billie, Lena, and so on. The title "Before Me" is a very fitting one indeed, and the music is simply magnificent!
KNIGHT SHINES.......2007-05-09
A very good cd by one of the vocal divas in the industry.Gladys will be compared to the original renditions but she shines through this fine effort.
Gladys Takes On THE STANDARDS.......2007-04-28
First of all, let me admonish those who too quickly dismiss either the singer or the producers on this recording. You must give props to some of the greatest music industry talents of our time here: Gladys Knight, Tommy Lipuma, and Phil Ramone. For no other reason, if you are a fan of any or all of these artists, this CD belongs in your collection (of course, this assumes you have some respect and understanding of "The Standards", the orchestral arrangements they require, and the singer's BOLDFACED willingness to take on the songs).
Having said this, I must admit this CD takes a few listens to warm up to. Like all STANDARDS recordings by CONTEMPORARY artists (whether Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt, George Michael, Natalie Cole, Frank Sinatra, Diana Krall, Chaka Khan, Rod Stewart, Shirley Horn, Diana Ross, Herb Alpert or....WHOMEVER), the listener is required to LET GO of previous audio experiences with the singer at hand; YOU must surrender! These recordings don't often, or readily, "fit" with our sensibilities and expectations of the singer...
After one spin of this CD I too was ready to stop listening and sell it back on Amazon (along with the 100's of others who are doing so, starting at $3.99 !?*&$%). However, after a couple more spins I'm ready to embrace this recording for what it is...to LET IT SELL ME.
Simply put, Gladys is just too great a diva, and Tommy and Phil are just too good at producing. This is a very high quality recording, whether you're ready for it or not. Thank you VERVE!!!
Summary: I eagerly excuse Gladys for maybe confusing SOUL music for STANDARDS at certain points; I excuse her for OVER SINGING and UNDER SINGING in spots throughout; I excuse the singer and the producers for meshing Big Band with Jazz with Blues with Symphony Orchestra with Soul when you're not really ready for it at times. But, in the end, I'm just VERY ready to accept this CD for WHAT IT IS!
Buy this!.......2007-03-04
Gladys, thank you for making this album! I love re-inventions of standards and my goodness, how Gladys has brought these songs back to life. So mellow, so controlled yet also sounding carefree - this is a wonderful CD and I sincerely hope we'll see "Before Me, Vol. 2" one day!

Dylan has issued a large number of live albums in his day, but 1974's Before the Flood deserves special mention because of the presence of the Band behind him. Dylan had recently brought the Band into the studio to record the chart-topping (yet still somehow underappreciated) Planet Waves, which was the first (and, as it turned out, only) studio record he made after leaving Columbia for Asylum. He then asked them along on the subsequent tour, which at the time became the most successful rock tour in history. The fruits of that partnership are contained on this two-CD set, which actually ignores Planet Waves completely in favor of older classics. Although the album includes several strong collaborations, the highlights ironically come during Dylan's solo-acoustic portion, which yields powerful and gritty versions of "Don't Think Twice" and "It's Alright Ma," and during the Band's own exhilarating numbers with Dylan sitting out. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
Flat out amazing..........2006-08-10
I have been to 4 Dylan concerts, and they have all been spectacular, with each one better than the last. The press always said he was mediocre live, but I never heard a mediocre concert of his. This album is ablaze with energy, precision, and passion. I play it a lot. Dylan infuses his old material with new arrangements (something he's done his whole career), and it all works. In fact, many of the songs here are superior to their studio versions, especially Like a Rolling Stone and Blowin' in the Wind. Hearing the audience scream (and I mean scream) when Dylan and The Band break into the chorus of Rolling Stone is chilling. The crowd is so massively into it. Even The Band's take on their material is superior to the studio versions. Everyone seems loose and relaxed here, but the playing is really tight. In fact, all the live Dylan albums I have (Before the Flood, Bootleg Vol. 4, Hard Rain, and Dylan and the Dead), only Dylan and the Dead really sucks. The others are magnificent. This is one of the greatest live albums ever...
best dylan recording ever.......2006-01-24
When Robert Zimmerman(Bob Dylan) started, he was a Woodie Guthrie clone. Many of the old Woodie Guthrie type folkies felt that the torch had been passed to a new generation. Many other young people, like myself, prefered Dylan songs done by popular rock groups of the time because Dylan's words were awsome, but the sound wasn't as good as rock music.
Dylan wanted to be a rock muscian, not a singing poet that was marketed as a Savior.
This Album is the dream realized for Bob Dylan. He was a rock star out on tour with "The Rolling Thunder Review"
Dylan gave Rock & Roll a new catagory. Rock music for people who can think.
Dylan + the Band = Brilliance.......2005-11-23
A strong live set from Zimmy and his ex-backup group, the Band. The energy here is everywhere, and though not as much as on Hard Rain, Before the Flood is my favorite Dylan live album out of the three I own, by a mile.
Since this is a live set with Dylan and the Band, not only are Dylan classics Knockin' on Heaven's Door, Just Like a Woman, It Ain't Me Babe, Don't Think Twice It's All Right, All Along the Watchtower, Like a Rolling Stone and Blowin' in the Wind included, but some of the Band's more popular numbers (the Weight, Stage Fright, Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, Up On Cripple Creek) are also played. Dylan and the Band are a very good match, and the songs are generally quite good. My problem is Bob's voice. He seems congested, and the same can be said for Hard Rain. Also, why does Lay Lady Lay sound so angry? Bob sings it the way he sang the studio takes of Positively 4th Street and Like A Rolling Stone. Isn't he supposed to be happy here?
A Rocking Good Time.......2005-11-09
This is the second record that Mr. D recorded for David Geffin's Asylum label before he went back to Colombia, (both this record and "Planet Waves" are now with CBS/Sony where all Dylan's stuff is now) and it's a rocking good time of a record. Dylan's voice is right up front and central, the Band's playing is strong. And Dylan performs a very, very angry, version of "It's Alright Ma," where the audience goes nuts when he shouts out, "Even the President of the United States sometimes must have to stand naked." You have to remember that this record came out during the Watergate scandal, seems Mr. Nixon wasn't to popular with the Dylan crowd. Five stars for this one.

etc. spectacular album, and a correction to a previous review.......2005-10-05
I agree with the post being a bit "political" -hard not to with Bob - But lets not have them in reviews
Yes as the recent DVD (brilliant) clearly shows it was the tour in the UK the the "Judas" etc. booing took hold, I too find it so odd by this time -as said- Like a Rolling Stone was #1 (were they not shipping Lp's to the UK ?)
It did start not when the Band were his back-up band but at Newport with Mike Bloomfield's brilliant pick of side men.
Thinking of Dylan being booed for what is IMHO his best period of music is mind boggling but it was indeed a FOLK festival and Bob was not "unwise" to the power of the Press and keeping his popularity intact.
I must consider "Flood" the Live GEM of the magical match between these *6 men that created ONE Band!
R-
The Royal Albert Hall release is a treat but at that time the drummer was not Levon so this is really the true combination Live
