Product Description
'Bent' is the first single from 'Mad Season', the 2000 album due out May 23rd from Lava/ Atlantic Records by Matchbox Twenty. Even though the hit American alternative pop group made quite a name for themselves with the success of their 1996 debut album 'Yourself Or Someone Like You' (which broke the top five, has sold well over eight million copies in the U.S. & stayed in Billboard's Top 200 Albums chart for over two years), the group's leader/ singer Rob Thomas has kept the band's voice alive in the public's ear in the meantime by recently winning two Grammys for his contributions to Santana's chart smash 'Smooth'. 'Bent' is accompanied here with two previously unreleased non-album tracks, live versions of 'Don't Let Me Down' & 'Busted', both recorded in Australia.2000 Release. Slimline jewel case.

5 out of 5 stars early Priest at its best........2007-06-19

This is my favorite 70s Priest album, and for good reason. Hell Bent For Leather takes the heavyness of earlier albums and speeds it up. Cross "Sinner" with "Exciter," and that's kind of what you've got. "Delivering The Goods" is a kick-@ss opener and one of my five favorite Priest songs. It's an overlooked classic. The variety between the tracks while still maintaining a constant aggressive attitude is amazing. "Evening Star" is a bit more commercial, but still kicks along. Then, of course, there's the title track and "The Green Manalishi," both of which are very good as well. "Before The Dawn" is a beautiful ballad sort of thing that feels just a bit out of place, but the musicianship and emotion more than makes up for that. Essential Priest.

5 out of 5 stars Priest...Priest..Priest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-04-24

A great album of course. Just received my cd version and it rocks!!!! Knew many of the tunes already."Delivering The Goods","Hell Bent For Leather","Take On The World","The Green Manalishi"(cover of The Mac),"Killing Machine" and "Before The Dawn" are the standouts.get it if you love Priest and re-visit the oldies. They are well worth it.
Look out for "Nostradamus" in the middle of the year or so.
Long live Priest and HALFORD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars A headbanging classic........2007-03-20

Hell Bent was my first Judas Preist album and it was quite good, to me it seems like Judas were one of the most influential heavy metal bands of all time, they basicly reinvented speed metal and thrash. Every one from Iron Maiden to Metallica have been influenced by this group anyway Hellbent for leather was released in 1979 right after Stained Class it was a strong album but not as good as the previous one an album that sounded a bit darker and heavier. Hell Bent was aiming for a heavy metal and rock'n'roll type of sound and was more about staying up all night and partying which is great cause I like those things I mean who doesn't, there are alot of great tracks in this that make you want to headbang like Delivering the goods, Burning up, Green manalishi and Hellbent for leather and if you want the more slower but still excellent songs like the ballad Before the dawn and Evening star which has more of a commercial sound to it but its still very catchy, the song Take on the world is the only song I didn't like cause of its sing-a-long chorus line that sounds like a rip of from Queen's We will rock you. As time progressed throughout the 80's Judas Priest were one of the biggest heavy metal bands of all time, if you're looking for a fast, aggresive and brutally intense album then check this out the two guitar attack of Glen Tipton and K.K. Downing is characteristically blistering and they often come up with the most amazing solos and not to mention Rob Halford with his great high pitched voice and signature scream makes for a great combination, make sure that you get this album if your interested in Judas Priest becaues its very essential and make sure that you also get these other great releases from JP like Stained Class, British Steel, Screaming For Vengeance and Angel Of Retribution alot of people didn't like Turbo but I thought it was pretty good even though during that time they did sound like a cheesy 80's hair metal group it was still a fun album to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have for Priest fans.......2007-02-17

What can I say? Classic Priest with all the hard-driving sound you would expect. Besides the several top 40 hits you're familiar with, it's got some underplayed gems that I can't live without. (Burnin'Up, Killing Machine....) This was a -rebuy for me, since I've worn out a copy on vinyl and one on cassette tape. Have to have this in my collection.

4 out of 5 stars A very small step back, but undeniably good........2006-07-12

How could Judas Priest follow "Stained Class"? Either by cloning it, or by doing something different. They did the latter, with slightly-mixed results, though "Hell Bent..." is still a worthy disc. However, one thing I've never figured out is why the U.S. record company made them change the title...I did see a "Killing Machine" LP in Canada years ago...should have got it for the collectible aspect alone...

This is more experimental than "Stained Class" was in that they tried a few more commercial songs. Sometimes it was good ("Evening Star" is very catchy whilst still remaining heavy) and sometimes less so ("Before The Dawn" just isn't Priest, despite an operatic vocal from "Robert" Halford).

Overall, though, if you get this, you'll get standard Priest fist-pumpers like "Delivering The Goods", "Rock Forever", "Burnin' Up" and "Take On The World" (which they would virtually clone a few years later with "United" from "British Steel"). The Tipton/Downing guitar work is fine, Halford sings well, Les Binks is probably the best drummer they ever had (though Scott Travis comes close) and Ian Hill is solid if almost inaudible. The production from James Guthrie is clear but still allows the heaviness to come through.

I do have to say, though, that the outtakes added do not fit at all. The live "Riding On The Wind" shows them at a much later stage in their career, as does "Fight For Your Life", which is of course an embryonic version of "Rock Hard Ride Free" from "Defenders Of The Faith".

But still overall an essential part of the Priest canon.

Nottingham's Bent are like the funny uncle of the chill-out world--scruffy, eccentric, often embarrassing, but lovable all the same. The Everlasting Blink, the duo's second album, is like a similarly oddball relative; interestingly strange, but not the kind of thing you'd want to live with for any length of time. It's every bit as beautiful as the likes of Lemon Jelly and Zero 7, but with a roughness and fuzziness that makes it impossible to dislike.

In Bent's world, smooth grooves and multicolored soundscapes are replaced by dodgy samples from cheesy thrift-store records, crisp beats, and cheap ambient synth sounds. Their debut album, 2001's Programmed to Love, took this spiky cut-and-paste approach to extremes, with intensely laidback cuts next to odd electronic work-outs. On the other hand, The Everlasting Blink is a much smoother proposition--just as silly and cheesy, but with altogether better production and less freaky weird-outs. It's full of glimmering trinkets of sonic loveliness; gems such as the poppy "Beautiful Otherness" (featuring the Beloved's Jon Marsh on vocals); lead single "Magic Love"; semi-acoustic country sing-a-longs and quirky electronic interludes. For those who've already fallen in love with Bent, this is nothing new; for those yet to convert, it should be a revelation. --Matt Anniss

3 out of 5 stars Hoping for more: more of the same..........2005-05-02

After having loved their debut "Programmed to Love", I was somewhat dissapointed at Bent's "Everlasting Blink". While not a bad album, I found it to be more of the same. Still, had it not been for the self-indulgent 22-minute long closing track, which consisted of one LOOOOOONG and unnecessary 9-minute-some long chunk of nothing more than silence, this could have been a four-star album. I just simply lost interest in it a halfway through it.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2004-04-16

I really like Bent although I don't know much history about them. The first song I ever heard of theirs was a cut called "Good Bloke" back in 2000 on a compilation called "The Chillout Room vol. 2". Then in 2001, MOS released tons of chillout comps and featured remixes and originals from Bent's "Programmed to Love" which I also really enjoyed. Finally in 2003, they came out with this one.

I don't really want to say which is better - they both have a unique sort of style. Bent focuses on electrical chords and in some ways, old school rythms. This one to me is a very suitable pick-up from where the first cd left off and moves the band a notch forward with their sound. You pop in "Strictly Bongo", and let it play and you're taken to the early 80's, late 70's until the end loop... a pure English vibe... and it's so nostalgic to me. Probably my favorite small loop in a song. And what's a Bent CD without some strange head-scratching "huh?" moments... like when the vocals for "So Long Without You" kicks up a notch? Oddly, it's acceptable because the group is Bent! And for anyone that's a Keen Eddie fan, there's a scene where Detective Pepin (the dude that was in the movie "The Saint" as a student) sits alone in a bar contemplating if not being "tied down" is so great after all. The music playing is from this cd - "Beautiful Otherness" is the song.

I highly recommend this. I've enjoyed it a great deal and it gets regular play in my collection. It won't make you forget Programmed to Love, it just sort of continues on with a more modern sound and different influences. It's got a tripped out feel that'll take you to another place and interesting electronic touches and great sounds in the ways that are typical "Bent". They manage to stay fresh without going too far away from what makes them who they are. And if you enjoy this, I would recommend music from lemonjelly.ky, Kinobe, The Dining Rooms, Leftfield and FC Kahuna.

4 out of 5 stars Worthy follow-up.......2004-02-05

While "Programmed" had a retro feel, "Blink" is decidedly more modern, eclectic, post-techno, or whatever the terminology is. Electronica is wonderfully suited for blending with R&B/soul (think Zero 7 or Royksopp), and Bent has one nailed with "Strictly Bongo". This is followed by "Beautiful Otherness" which is a classic, and has one of the most catchy baselines ever. The next 7 tracks vary in style enormously. Hard to believe a man with a mullet could produce such artsy music.

Bent is one of the most original bands on the planet, to be placed on Olympus alongside the Pixies, Boards of Canada, and Lemon Jelly.

4 out of 5 stars 'thick ear' - the irony!.......2004-02-03

while i agree with most of the comments others made about this album, the near-universal dislike of the circus-like atmosphere of the closer, "thick ear," strikes me as quite hilarious. perhaps the tune is aptly named, as doctors bent likely understood, while brilliant as the track is, that genius would more times than not fall of deaf ears. seems to me that some folks need to visit the "music therapy" wing of "the bent home for the tediously sane," as advertised on their website.

4 out of 5 stars Better than I thought, nine minute silence is forgiven!!.......2004-01-09

This is a good album that is almost as good as their first FIVE STAR rating album: It is more upbeat than their first album "Programmed to Love" which is excellent, although it does have a more 'canned' sound. That is to say the beat boxes and other tape-looped sounds are out front and obvious. Granted, one knows this is the output of a duet and recognizes that not all instruments on the album will be, well, instruments, but these sound effects don't work quite as well as they did on the first. 2) The music while perhaps as multi-layered as on the first album is not as full on and has a sound more like something from an eurovision contest or at times from something out of an episode of Dr. Who albeit not often. It is more upbeat, light and airy too, Okay, okay, it's fey, but good fey. For instance, I think I heard a theramin on one track and there is definitely a pedal steel/slack guitar sound on another or two. Bent have also seem to have pulled samples from their previous album and incorporated them into new songs, usually as opening lines. This is cute and playful, and even inventive, but can be cloying because it causes one to wonder if one is listening to a parody. Which brings me to issue 3) The 9 minute silence that occurs 3 minutes into the song 'Thick Ear' (which itself is reference to a one minute silence on the early album) is an faux pas excusable only because it warns one to stop the play before the last few minutes of truly obnoxious 'play' (raucous phone ring from different speakers, chatter and intermitent sound bits, etc.). Having got that off my chest, there is some really good stuff on this album and a buyer of this CD will not regret it. Listen to the samples and if they sound right, the album will probably get you off. In my opinion, this particular album doesn't deserve the five stars their first major label effort 'Programmed To Love' does. This'll stay on the play list for a couple of weeks (months?) and then one of you lot will be buying it here on amazon but then again as I listen to it more and more, perhaps it is a keeper thus the 4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Hank.......2005-08-02

This is pure Hank from the days when we all didn't have to worry about being politically correct. It's an oldie but a goodie.

5 out of 5 stars Hank The Great.......2005-03-29

There ain't much to talk about if you'll talk about Hank. His sound is unique and matchless, and this album is one of his diamonds.Listening to this album I can almost see myself in a trashy bar sippin' from my glass of Old Jack. Yeeeowww!! Pure and outlaw country! just the way it should always be.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album!!.......2004-06-10

This is where Hank really starts coming true to form as we know him today! Family tradition was a good album but this one is great! Filled with great hits, any Hank fan will truly appreciate this album which includes Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound, O.D.'d in Denver, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Hank from 1979.......2004-03-31

While Kenny Rogers (of whom I am also a huge fan) was dominating the commercial aspect of country music with songs such as The Gambler and She believes in me, Hank was doing things his way, just as he always has done since he left MGM, with his unique blend of country, rock and blues. Of course, plenty of others have blended these three, including Elvis in the fifties, but Hank's blend is very much his own.

On this album, the my favorite tracks (but not by much) are the title track, Women I've never had and a brilliant duet with Waylon Jennings, The conversation, about Hank's father. There's also a great revival of White lightning, which was written by the Big Bopper but provided George Jones with a top ten American pop hit. Hank's cover is very different from George's but I love them both. Hank also does an excellent cover of Gregg Allman's Come and go blues.

Considering that Hank never did things the Nashville way, it is perhaps surprising that he had as much success as he did - but the quality of his albums, including this one, ensure that he deserved all the success that he had.

4 out of 5 stars Production a bit too polished but a worthy release by the master..........2006-08-09

Early Rainbow fans go as far to say that after Dio and Bonnet left on vocals, Joe Lynn Turner era was no longer Rainbow. This is not really fair. Ritchie knew what he wanted and he did it. If you look back and analyze the history of Ritchie Blacmore's project, Rainbow, you have to conclude that Blackmore was a musical genius and has had more influence on pop music than any other person. He also had a very keen sense of timing, knowing what to release and when to release it.

Not even the Beatles or the Stones or whoever have been able to go from relatively non-commercial hard rock (ie-Rainbow Rising) appealing to fans of heavy metal only, to appealing to a completely different segment of the American Adult Oriented (AOR) pop market, while at the same time adding bits and pieces of classical music along with it, to the tune of Beethoven. This is what Ritchie did with the band Rainbow. This was the last of the Turner era studio releases, and while it's not quite as good as "Straight Between the Eyes", it's still very good.

It is a bit too polished and poppy at times (very 80's sounding), which makes the songs seem a bit generic now. It is quite evident that Ritchie's guitar playing was taking a sideline to a certain degree, to the favoring of a strong melody and the smooth high voice of Joe Lynn Turner. This is typical of Ritchie's contrasting personality, while on the one hand he wants a top ten hit, of which he had several in the UK (and close to it in the U.S. with "Stone Cold" and "Street of Dreams") and then on the other hand, he doesn't want the spotlight for himself. His unwillingness to do interviews and his disappearances and constant line-up changes have made Rainbow one of the biggest "sleepers" of all time. How many times have I played a Rainbow song and someone says "that's awesome; who is it"? I say it's Rainbow and they reply "Who"? Unfortunate, but Ritchie is still laughing because he did what he set out to do. He found enough success, but effectively kept himself away from the media hounds and the trappings of personal limelight. The stellar tracks on this CD are: Stranded, Can't Let You Go, Street of Dreams (not really a rock song, but like a Michael Bolton song), and Fire Dance. Overall a bit overproduced with the guitar kind of buried in the mix, but a four star record, for sure.

What Rainbow management should do is re-release Japan Live 84, which is now an out-of-print VHS release. It should be released on CD. This is the last and likely the best concert that Rainbow played with Joe Lynn Turner on vocals. This epitomized what Ritchie had set out to do with the band

5 out of 5 stars Can one song make the CD?.......2006-04-26

Yes, when that song is "Street of Dreams." It is the best ever by Blackmore et al. "Can't Let You Go" is some righteous powerful vocals; dessert if you will to the main dish and another reason to grab this CD. The best part is neither song has anything to do with the Knights, Wizards or Dragons. That little banjo player (thanx Ian) really had gotten quite bent, but with this collection was bent back INTO shape. Cheers.

4 out of 5 stars Bent Out of Shape ~ Rainbow.......2005-12-15

Again a good album by rainbow, after this album Blackmore goes back to deep purple, I rather see Ritchie in rainbow. That is because I think Ian Gillan isn't such a good singer as Joe Lynn Turner. This is the third album with Joe Lynn Turner, and it is very good. Ritchie plays good, but at some songs I think the guitar may be a bit louder. Fire Dance is a song that needs louder guitars, it rocks, but I almost can't here the guitarplay during the stanza. There are two instrumental songs on this album: Anybody there and Snowman. Anybody there is nice to hear, but Snowman is boring. Well, the rest is kinda good, below you can see how I rate the songs:

1. Stranded (7/10)
2. Can't Let You go (10/10) --> my favorite song of the album.
3. Fool For The Night (10/10)
4. Fire Dance (10/10)
5. Anybody There (8/10)
6. Desperate Heart (10/10)
7. Street Of Dreams (10/10)
8. Drinking With the Devil (9/10)
9. Snowman (6/10)
10. Make Your Move (7/10)

As you can see, there are no bad songs on this album, some average songs, but the rest is very good. I recommend this to you!

5 out of 5 stars Rainbow's best Turner era album!.......2005-12-03

This has 2 of Blackmore's best instrumentals and plenty of classic songs Including the hits Can't Let You Go and Street Of Dreams. Turner's vocals are brilliant and Blackmore's playing has never been better.

1.Stranded- 10/10 An excellent fast paced song with a great subtle riff at the beginning. This song has an excellent chorus where Joe Lynn Turner shows off his vocal power. The yells of "Stranded" are awesome too. A great solo by Blackmore who throws in some whammy bar dives and some cool fast lines. The ending of the song sounds great with the yells of "Stranded" and Blackmore's great riff. A great hard rocking classic.

2.Can't Let You Go- 10/10 This song starts out with a great scary organ intro similar to the Ozzy song Mr. Crowley. The riff is great too. The song is very melodic and Joe Lynn Turner's vocal performance is incredible. This is a very commercial song but it's still great. Blackmore's solo is excellent and has a lot of feeling. This song kind of reminds me of Journey actually.

3.Fool For The Night- 9/10 A great melodic rocker. This song has a catchy riff and great soaring vocals. The song has a nice fast tempo to it and excellent drum and bass work. Blackmore's solo is brilliant again and very lyrical.

4.Fire Dance- 9/10 A great fast paced melodic rocker with a great riff. The drumming is amazing too. The keyboard solo is incredible too and Blackmore's solo is as amazing. The trade off works very well in this song and Turner's vocals soar. Turner's amazing high pitched screams att he end remind me of classic Deep Purple. Another classic!

5.Anybody There- 10/10 A beautiful instrumental with some of Ritchie Blackmore's best playing ever. Blackmore plays some of the emotional guitar playing I've ever heard. The backround music is great too.

6.Desperate Heart- 9/10 A great melodic song with an excellent vocal performance from Joe Lynn Turner. The melodic riff is excellent and the drums are great. Blackmore's solo is brilliant again too.

7.Street of Dreams- 10/10 Another Rainbow classic. This starts off with a great melodic intro which a lot of keyboards. Joe Lynn Turner's vocals and lyrics are excellent too. The chorus is very strong and the drum and bass sound is great. Blackmore's solo has a lot of feeling and is very lyrical. This was one of Rainbow's biggest hits too. Blackmore's second solo has a lot of feeling too. This is one of the best songs on the album.

8.Drinking With the Devil- 9/10 A great fast paced rocker with an excellent riff. Turner's vocals are excellent and Blackmore's blazing solo is amazing. Very solid drum and bass work on this fast song.

9.Snowman- 9/10 A great instrumental with an excellent keyboard arrangement and great playing by Blackmore. Blackmore's playing is both emotional and technical. A great instrumental but maybe a little too long.

10.Make Your Move- 9/10 A good fast paced song with excellent drumming. More great high pitched screams by Joe Lynn Turner too. Turner's vocals soar and Blackmore's riff is great again. Blackmore's solo is excellent too.

If you like melodic rock, 80's music, great guitar playing or great singing than this album is for you. The band is

Joe Lynn Turner- Vocals
Ritchie Blackmore- Guitar
Chuck Burgi- Drums
Roger Glover- Bass, Percussion
David Rosenthal- Keyboards

4 out of 5 stars Solid Rainbow.......2005-11-30

It's disappointing that as I write this review, Bent Out Of Shape is only being offered used. After many years I've come to realize that it is one of the better Rainbow albums. Produced by Deep Purple/Rainbow bassist Roger Glover in 1983, Bent Out Shape made it to #34 on the charts thanks to heavy rotation of the video for Street Of Dreams on MTV. When I got the cassette I did not listen to it as much as I should have. But with a lot of formula music out there these days I find myself going back to 70s and early 80s rock. Anyways, there are several excellent tracks like Stranded, Drinking With The Devil, and Can't Let You Go (the other single with a great church organ intro). I also love the two instrumentals, Anybody There and Snowman! Both have great emotional melodic guitar from the master, Ritchie Blackmore. Snowman has a beautiful relaxing melody played on keyboards. Apparently both Richie and singer Joe Lynn Turner wanted to do another album together but due to a sly manager who wanted to see Richie back in Deep Purple, this never happened. They did do the decent Slaves and Masters (Deep Purple) together with Roger but that would be seven years later.

5 out of 5 stars Great Frankie Laine arrangements.......2007-03-31

Rockin' contains some great singing by Frankie Laine backed up by a wonderful Los Angeles studio orchestra (Conrad Gozza, et. al) led by Paul Weston. The arrangements are spectacular! I recognize some Billy May charts - Weston , probably, did the string arrangements. GREAT STUFF here.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Frankie Laine.......2007-03-11

I was delighted to find this CD available on amazon.com as the quality of music these days has suffered so much as the level of talent is so often compromised to make a commercial disc.
The quality of this disc is outstanding musically as well as vocally !
I did enjoy the "Hell Bent For Leather" portion more than "the Rockin'" segment. I liked the old cowboy themes for what they are and the fact that they are definitive.
If you like classic cowboy music and good old vocals then get this disc !!

4 out of 5 stars the way they should sound.......2007-03-09

I'm not too fond of the Rockin half. I've only heard of a couple of the songs, I love the "Hell Bent for Leather" part. The songs are from my childhood. Frankie Laine has a great voice so I do like to hear him sing.
My Mom sang along with him, so this is a good memory.
I've heard songs from the second half on other records and they just don't sound the same as the originals.

5 out of 5 stars Rockin'/ Hell Bent For Leather.......2006-02-21

Frankie Laine at his best!! Perfect for anyone who loves the "old" music!

5 out of 5 stars Another great performer who's defined by what he isn't.......2005-10-09

Mention Frankie Laine and most people think of somebody who appeared on TV too much, and especially as some clueless sap who recorded the title tune for the vulgar movie sitcom "Blazing Saddles," and that's that. That's not that. Laine was a powerhouse, and if his emoting may not appeal to all listeners, we cannot deny his magnetism. A man who co-wrote the outstanding "We'll Be Together Again" deserves his plaudits.

Inevitably some double albums mesh the unmeshable, and while this entire disc is quite entertaining, the first album is the better. Where "Hell Bent for Leather!" is Laine in his "yeeeeee-HAH!" mode (another reason the stereotype sticks too rigidly to him), slickly and conventionally led by Johnny Williams (before he became Erich Wolfgang Korngold -- er, John Williams), "Rockin'" is a first-rate jazz album, and proves that with the right song and the right backing no one could surpass him. You have to wonder why Laine hasn't gotten his due. Is it the Mitch Miller angle? The fact that he recorded "I Believe"? Whatever, it's unjust, and anyone who brings two open ears to this recording will discover a supreme entertainer.

Imagine a modern day Peter, Paul, & Mary, only edgier, and with a quirky sense of humor. Girlyman creates a rich, playful sound that crosses genres and genders. Their harmony-driven style veers from contemporary folk to country rock and pop. Each member switches off songwriting duties, lead vocals, and range of instruments including acoustic guitar, djembe, banjo, baritone guitar, and mandolin. The Village Voice has described this band as "Really Good, Really Unexpected, and Really Different."

I saw Girlyman with Dar Williams in Raleigh, NC. Great show!! This CD captures their unique harmonies and quirky edge. Great drive time music to beat the traffic jam blues.

Not sure how I stumbled across Girlyman, but the group is my new favorite. The great lyrics and gorgeous harmonies have won them a prominent spot on my play list! They're coming to Seattle soon! I won't miss the show!

5 out of 5 stars One of my new favorites.......2005-02-23

It's always a thrill to be pleasantly surprised by an opening act you've never heard of. I first heard Girlyman when they opened for the Indigo Girls last fall, and was absolutely floored. "Say Goodbye," "Viola" and "The Shape I Found You In" are favorites, and their cover of "My Sweet Lord" is fun, although a little safe.

They were a fun band to see live. Girlyman possesses excellent stage presence and good-natured wit. I look forward to more great things from them.

5 out of 5 stars Michael Stipe meets the Indigo Girls.......2005-02-20

I first heard this group on the radioio eclectic webstream. The song was "Fall Stories." I noticed over the course of a month or so that every time that the song came on that I paid more attention to it. They have marvelous melodies that you just wished you could hear more of in mainstream music. I found their website and listened to their album. After one listen I ordered the CD and awaited its arrival. I thought they reminded me very much of the early Indigo Girls. Later on I joined their fan club in the hope they might eventually visit somewhere nearby. They are now signed on to the Indigo Girls record label so I hope there is enough marketing power behind them that they get to make a new album. The only weak song on the album is the remake of George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord." It isn't bad, but just not as great as all the other songs.

This is probably the best Jeff Finlin album I've purchased and I have 5 of his albums. Somewhere South of Wonder has a bunch of strong songs with great production and arrangements. It is a good balance of rock and ballads. Jeff's music sits somewhere between Bob Dylan, Bruce Cockburn and Tom Waits. This is probably the flagship of Jeff's body of work and is a must for any Jeff Finlin convert.

Though they've been compared to everyone from Air to Radiohead, Nottingham, England's Bent are mostly defined by their determination to sound like everyone. With that goal in mind, they've stuffed Programmed to Love with an array of samples from vocalists and snippets from jazz, rock, hip-hop, and God knows what else. Stylistically they flirt with downtempo, but just as often the music winds up further afield, embracing trip-hop, ambient, and post-club anthems. "Private Road" mixes a chilly female vocal with cracked samples and a swaying rhythm, but later the album falls into sillier, Lemon Jelly-like territory with "I Remember Johnny." It all works, making for a record that stays fresh with repeated listenings. Besides, Bent have received the ultimate 21st-century compliment already, as the vaguely big-beat thump of "Invisible Pedestrian" has shown up in a car commercial. With that sort of cachet, can mainstream success be far behind? If not, so be it, as Love finds room for more imaginative fun while being more accessible than anything in recent memory. --Matthew Cooke

Music has a great aftertaste. One of the few albums that i can listen to over and over.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting.....yet different.......2005-05-12

I was looking through my local music store perusing through the B Section and came across Bent: Programmed To Love CD. I said, 'what the heck', and purchased this CD. Until today I have not had a chance to listen to this album and I am both surprised and intrigued by this group's form of music. What is most enticing is that Bent does not come under one genre or form of music but takes from the pop, new age, easy listening as well as trance fusion and brings it all together into one package.
What one must have when they listen to this type of music is patience and understanding...patience is needed because to fully understand and enjoy this CD one must listen to the whole album more than once. It grows on you, as it did me.
This is 'Bent's' first album and I will be endeavouring to get their others soon on order from Amazon. The picks from this CD for me was 'Chocolate Wings' and 'Invisible Pedestrian'.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2004-09-28

After repeated listenings, I just don't tire of this album. There is always something new to discover.

1 out of 5 stars Bent: programmed to love.......2004-05-07

This CD was brutal to the extent that I can only consider it obscene. I can only help in aiding the people of the world by encouraging them to live their lives free of ever having to have suffered it.

5 out of 5 stars Bent And Wigged.......2004-02-18

Okay, so they're not terribly original. Okay, so listening to Bent can devolve into playing a game of Spot The Sample (they seem to like Nana Mouskouri a lot). They're no less enjoyable for all that, though; that they sound like a lot of other similarly-inclined outfits shouldn't stop anyone from checking them out (they seem to like Yello a lot). They have a knack for combining lovely musical passages with absurdist humor, and they don't sound like they are trying incredibly hard, which is good (they seem to like Telex a lot). My Major Gripe Department admonishes, however, that even the most absurd ideas are subject to overkill (they seem to like 'Gilligan's Island' a lot). Hence, as enjoyable as tracks like 'I Remember Johnny', 'Invisible Passenger', and especially 'New Wig For Me' are, they'd be twice as good at around half their length- -which is about where the songs' punchlines begin to lose their impact and the absurdity factor- -Bent's manifest raison d'etre- -becomes cloying (they seem to like Hawkwind a lot). But what the heck, a good joke is always worth hearing again. And check out that hidden track (they seem to like bathos a lot).

5 out of 5 stars This cd is every bit as good as previous Bent albums........2007-07-01

This album is just as strong as Bent's previous albums. It is for me a total evolution of the group's sound and combines the sounds of previous albums to create something new and interesting. This one is more on the "quirky" end of the Bent spectrum and is less like the ethereal Ariels. Highlights for me are Stay Out All Night, Leaving Me and The Handbrake. This album is a must have for any fan of intelligent and unique electronica.

3 out of 5 stars Good and Bad.......2007-06-28

The Good: Attempting something different. Stay Out All Night and Waiting for You are excellent.

The Bad: Sounds like Erasure had an influence, and it's the weakest effort from them. Even the Exercise is a bit muddy and erratic.

Beautiful Otherness is still the best song.

5 out of 5 stars Meet them - they always has something to play..........2007-05-06

Ooh Bent, they are one of my favourite. I have all them releases and I always wait for new to come. Great work like all previous - interesting...highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Ah BENT, how could I ever have doubted you?.......2007-04-08

I originally came to Amazon to buy this CD but was scared off by the negative reviews. And let's face it -- the short, lo-fi samples here don't always help fill in the gaps. But I came back and bought it anyway, and I LOVE it! There is enough of the classic Bent sound to make me feel at home while I go along for the ride, as they channel ELO harmonies, provide snappy hooks and otherwise offer much needed ear candy. As usual, they are detached enough to make you wonder if they take any of their pathos seriously, but I do. This ranks right up with the rest of their work, IMHO...

2 out of 5 stars Eesh...........2007-04-05

Well, it's not bad. Like others mentioned, there are a few tracks that are like Bent's previous stuff and they're great but not as fantastic as some of their earlier, amazing singles. If you love the other 3 "released" cd's like I do, then this one will be the weakest of them. The first cd had some cheesy songs w/ cheesy "guy" singing but it kinda worked for me and had great beats and slide guitars & stuff in the music to make up for it. And they were just plain fun tracks inbetween absolutely amazing ones. Half this cd, which is under 50 mins., is pretty darn good and the other half is kinda crap. Where Ariels and the other cd's have me coming back for more listens, I find myself not really caring about this cd as much. I still have faith in them though- they'll come back with a better cd. -- I hope.

5 out of 5 stars A review just to add a little star weight........2007-05-08

This album is quite a radical departure from the bent we've heard from before which probably explains why it did not get a United States Release. As nobody below has really described the music it contains, I'll attempt to do so. Take a little bit of Curve or Lush (shoegazers from the 80's/90's), add a healthy dollop of Annie Lennox when she was part of that duo whose name escapes me (the vocals on this album are all driven by a strong but vulnerable female lead) salt it with a teeny tiny bit of 80's britpop ala depeche mode then fill out the rest with the soul of our old familiar bent and you've got this one nailed. Ordinarily this sort of thing is a bit effeminate or, perhaps more aptly, obviously emotional for me but there is something really pure and soulful and powerful about it that causes one to not play it but once every great while, and each time the full power and quality of it prises one's heart open and makes it bleed. This is a really good album!

5 out of 5 stars This album changed my BENT opinion..........2006-11-20

Funny thing... I was in the camp at first that thought this cd was a slight change from what BENT was up to. I loved the first 2 cd's and the fun sampling on them. This cd did away with that sampling and I was worried at first that I wasn't liking it as much as the other cd's. Given a year or so of listening to it, I now think this is their best cd to date. It really is amazing and I listen to alot of this genre of music and think BENT is still the cream of the crop. I thank god I found a unheard-of little duo called BENT on the web years ago. They just have their own sound in the genre and a way of mixing to make incredably beautiful tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Bent's finest and most complete album to date........2006-07-28

First of all I'd like to say that Bent are the most consistent producers that I have had the chance to hear.

"Programmed to Love" was as one of the finest debut albums I've ever heard. "Everlasting Blink" was a very nice follow up to the debut release. "Ariels" shows me that this duo has perfected their style in a magnificent way.

This release is one of the finest works released this decade. It starts out with a few slower tempo songs that have a very nice feel. This really helps set a tone for the rest of the album. Soon we begin to see the complexity that this group has to offer as we progress through the album. The mixture of exquisite instruments layered upon perfectly chosen vocal tracks reveals a quality of production and song writing very rarely experienced in popular music. With the duo's "Exercise 4" we get a wonderful bit of electronic fun just before they sink into "The Waters Deep", the last track on the album. Which puts the so called 'cherry on top' of this tasty treat for all to enjoy just before we start the CD over again.

I myself can't seem to take this album out of my car. Everytime I feel like listening to something really amazing it's right there to make everthing alright. I for one can't wait for the next release from Bent. They've made themselves into something special that all music fans can appreciate for one reason or aonther. For anything from the variety of instruments, vocalists, and equipment used to the pure quality of production. And yet the song writing may be the strongest quality displayed in "Ariels".

It isn't the individual attributes of this duo that really brings them to life. It is the style in which they combine these qualities and the consistency with which they do so.

If you haven't heard of Bent it's probably time you buy one of their albums. You can't go wrong!

5 out of 5 stars Really nice, with a cute, fun feel to it..........2006-06-20

Its a very nice CD. Sort of upbeat and fun and it has some very nice mellow songs in it. You can play from beginning to end and not be dissappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Really very, very good just not devastating.......2006-05-05

My formal introduction to Bent came after a random download onto my computer from Audiogalaxy turned up "Always". I was smitten and quickly fell head over heals with Swollen as well, arguably one of the strongest and most beautiful tracks off "Programmed to Love". Their experimental sampling and off the wall vocals don't always work for me and it took a while to come to fully appreciate the wonderment of PTL. Regardless, I continued to purchase everything they put out. I know why two of the reviewers gave Ariels a decidedly low vote. It's less overtly electronic and gone is the kitschy fun of PTL and some of the quirky Hawaiian sounds from their sophomore effort "The Everlasting Blink" but what remains is the beautiful emotion that they always manage to evoke. Some of Ariels is merely nice without the punch but at least several tracks stand out namely Exercise 4 which is as fine as anything they have done (such as Magic Love, Always, etc) along with I Can't Believe It's Over (with Kosheen's Sian Evans), and I'm Coming Back (with Weekend Players' Rachel Foster). I listen to about half the numbers and the other half I leave for the background but really Exercise 4 alone was worth it to me.
