1 out of 5 stars Latter-day also-rans.......2007-05-28

There will always be arguments for this or that singer, but this title is absurd. I didn't see a single Jussi Bjoerling, George London, Leonard Warren, or Zinka Milanov, and only one mention of Del Monaco. These were singers. Bjoerling and London were in a class by themselves. I saw all of these folks live on stage. London and Del Monaco had stage presence you don't get now. Di Stefano, Kirsten, de los Angeles should be on any best list. Play any tenor aria by any tenor; then play Bjoerling's. Play any bass/baritone aria by any singer; then play London's. Jussi and George will knock your socks off. They sang everything in every language. Tebaldi and Pavarotti sang only Italian, much easier.

4 out of 5 stars A well-sung compilation.......2003-09-15

Compilations usually receive negative feedback from experienced opera listeners. However, this compilation by no means should be only welcomed by opera listeners, it should be welcomed by all music listeners. This CD is a great one to own for a first time opera listener. Also, for the person who wants to listen to opera once in a while and who does not want to buy a myriad of CD's in order to have the same amount of arias as this CD has. Eighty-percent of the singers are high-quality singers in this CD and the orchestras along with their respective conductors, do justice to the songs. All of the arias in this CD are what we in the field call, standard repertoire, and therefore are a good source for a beginning musician to help him or her listen to phrasing, colour, dynamics, language etc. I certainly recommend it, without a doubt.

1 out of 5 stars This cant be the best.......2003-04-20

Elisa from Italy is absolutely right--well, the present generation may not be able to listen the golden oldies and the grand masters in person but it is still true that the past masters far surpassed the new. De Stefano had a magnetic voice, but listen to Gigli singing Puccini's La boheme and you will melt away, though it is v v v difficult to get hold of his mono recordings, even in CD. I disagree with Elisa only on one point: Tebaldi is good, but Victoria de Los angeles' Mimi is better. And the indulgent Thomas Beecham is my favourite conductor of this opera, way ahead of Toscannini, but De Stefano's Boheme is worth keeping and listening to again and again....

1 out of 5 stars TRUE OPERA LOVERS CANNOT POSSIBLY LIKE THIS!.......2002-11-27

True opera lovers (I won't say "experts" 'cos I dislike the word) cannot possibly like this ... ! Apart from Callas, here there is none of the greatest artists! Callas may be great in Carmen but nobody can beat RENATA TEBALDI and her angel-like voice in all of Puccini's operas or in GIORDANO's Andrea Chénier. No Carreras can beat MARIO DEL MONACO in Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, or Verdi's Otello. And finally, NO ALAGNA, or PAVAROTTI, or LICITRA, or whatever CHEAP TENOR or CROOK can ever beat the greatest tenor of all times: GIUSEPPE DI STEFANO!
Come on! You can't like crook Pavarotti once you have heard Giuseppe Di Stefano!! You can't like ... connductor Riccardo Muti if you have listened to Arturo Toscanini!!
True opera lovers, especially lovers of Puccini, go for the Immortal, the Sublime, the Beautiful in opera: GO FOR GIUSEPPE DI STEFANO!
Go hear his performance of "E lucevan le stelle" as in EMI Callas/Di Stefano "Tosca" or "Che Gelida manina" always as in EMI Callas/Di Stefano "La Boéme" and you'll know what I mean.

5 out of 5 stars Even if you Hate Complilations, Get This One.......2002-06-21

This is a marvelous collection of better known arias and duets in Opera. The singers are those famous for setting, and raising, the bar in their field and for their times: Renata Scotto, Maria Callas, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti. If you are only somewhat familiar with opera, these recordings give you the highest feeling of what an aria or duet can sound like when sung and interpreted at its best. If you are already familiar with these songs, then you will appreciate this collection all the more for having gathered them in one place. I play both discs all the time. I've especially appreciated being able to compare vocal qualities side by side, so to speak, as Maria Callas can be heard next to Mirella Freni and Victoria de los Angeles. Even if you are not familiar with these singers, this is the way to meet them. Maria Callas has a much darker, back of the throat tone. Mirella Freni is pure, clear and light floating up in the higher notes. You can almost visualize the singers as they place the notes in their throats and set them out in the air to vibrate.

3 out of 5 stars Wwwwaaaaaaaaa there's not enough music.......2006-10-20

I'm irate. This disk doesn't have enough music on it. How dare someone market a disk that doesn't take up the full capacity of the medium! Especially as part of a group set of classic artists and most of the others have about 10-12 songs per as well. How dare they? I've almost a mind not to buy it. That'll teach'em.

But at least now there's a forum for people with hair trigger tempers, a gross sense of entitlement, and diahorrea fingers such as myself to unload himself, and thereby cleanse their soul, from this crass, corporate, greedy attack on my psyche. People better start doing things my way or else. Has anybody written their Congressman? All this Government Force lying around and someone gets away with putting out a CD with 31 minutes on it? The Feds better get their priorities straight.

The music is pretty good too, but Cousin Marvin was better....

3 out of 5 stars Great music, but there are (much much) better compilations out there........2006-07-25

Chuck Berry was one of the great original Rock and Rollers. With his amp-churning guitar solos, simple but addictive riffs, and the sly, trashy teenage poetry of his lyrics, "Uncle" Chuck has pretty much defined rock n roll, and laid the groundwork for a few billion bands to follow. The Rolling Stones probably would have been inconcievable without this guy.
Given the man's daunting legacy, the real question is, where do you start listening to his music? Well, 20th Century Masters is certainly not a good choice; sure, all of these songs here are great, but at 11 tracks and around 30 minutes in length, this collection is about as skimpy as it gets. For its price, it's a decent introduction (assuming you have, like... no money): It gives you classics such as "Maybelline" and the eternal "Johnny B. Goode," and it's certainly a concise listen. However, if you can afford chewing gum, you can afford to treat yourself to a better collection (one with "Havana Moon" and "You Can't Catch Me," preferably). Pick up the two disc Anthology, or find a used copy of the Great Twenty-Eight (I got mine for about seven bucks).

2 out of 5 stars Poor introduction to the genius of Berry.......2005-08-18

The music is certainly great, not to mention groundbreaking, making Berry an essential entry in any music collection. However, there are so many other compilation albums to get before this one. The problem with skimpy single-artist compilations like these is, while they do serve a proper introduction, that after you begin liking the artist you have absolutely no use for the compilation. Almost every song here can be found on both "The Great Twenty-Eight" and the Chess "Anthology" release, two superior (and superiorly compiled) introductions to Berry's work. The songs on here are great (with the exception of "My Ding-A-Ling"), but honestly - way too brief. There is about twenty-five minutes worth of material, and a CD can hold up to eighty. A used copy of "The Great Twenty-Eight" probably costs less, get that instead.

2 out of 5 stars Can't Fault The Music, But..........2004-09-09

I've always looked at "greatest hits" albums as "starter" albums.
A great way to sample the artists work, then decide whether you want to further explore (ie purchase)more from their body of work. This collection from Chuck Berry serves the above premise to some degree. It is decent way to sample Chucks's music, especially for someone on a budget. But, only 11 tracks? Each logging in at about two minutes, on a medium that can hold 80 minutes of music. I'll let you do the math to see where this collection really comes up short, literally. My recommendation for single disc Chuck Berry compilation is "The Great Twenty-Eight" album, obviously containing 28 songs.
However, if you can afford a few extra bucks, I would highly recommend the "Anthology 2" album over "The Great Twenty-Eight".
And, if you can upgrade even further, opt for the Mount Olympus of Chuck Berry compilations, "The Chess Box", which boasts over 70 tracks on 3 discs.
****July 2006 Update. The release of "Definitive Collection" with it's 30 tracks makes it the definite single disc compilation of choice.****

4 out of 5 stars Rocking Good.......2004-04-02

Chuck Berry is one of rock n roll's formost perfomers of all-time. He influenced The Beatles, amoung others. If you don't own a Chuck Berry CD, get this.

2 out of 5 stars Faulty titling.......2007-05-30

The music is wonderful. HOWEVER, only the first disc has the correct song titles and artists. The other five discs have most of the same song titles and artists as Disc #1, although the music on each disc conforms to what is listed in the catalog. When we attempted to rip the music onto our "Windows Media Player", where we keep all our music stored to play through our hi-fi system, we could copy only the first disc. All the other discs had those same song titles and artists (although the music was different) and the program reported only that the song was already copied. Apparently your quality control was off work that day.

Have you had other such complaints? One wouldn't know about this if one were to simply play the discs on a CD player. They would seem to be fine. Is there any recourse for those of us who have a computer-based hi-fi system?

5 out of 5 stars For the beginner.......2007-03-08

This is a great collection for someone who knows they like opera music but don't know where to start. This will probably be all the opera I will ever need now.

4 out of 5 stars Opera or not.......2007-02-13

For those new to opera, this set is an excellent provider of a wide variety of operatic works, rendered by artists well known even to non-opera officionados.

5 out of 5 stars Superlative collection.......2006-10-11

A collection of 100 individual arias and ensembles from the EMI catalogue of complete opera recordings made between 1955 and 2003. It includes a wide selection from popular operas by Italian, Austrian, German, Russian and French composers. The French are especially well represented unlike most such anthologies. And a few more obscure contributions are thrown in, like an aria from Catalani's La Wally. A judicious balance of musical periods and styles, and the very best singers of the last half of the last century. And remarkably, the whole collection of 6 CDs, over 7 hours of music, is being sold for the cost of only 1 CD !

Chuck Berry, already 29 when he scored his first hit with 1955's "Maybellene," drew on his own experiences at school and behind the wheel to fashion many of the classics that made him one of rock & roll's earliest great songwriters. Linking country boogie to jump-blues licks from the likes of Louis Jordan, Berry was both in touch with the past and totally new, as proto-protests ("School Day") and odes to the freshly flourishing teen lifestyle ("Sweet Little Sixteen," "Oh Baby Doll") make clear. While His Best (and its companion volume) provide a more expensive alternative to the now out-of-print Great Twenty-Eight, there's no getting around the fact that Berry's music is as essential as it comes. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars 3 3/4 Stars- Amazing music, but there are better places to get these songs........2005-11-26

With all due respect to Elvis, Richard, Buddy, and Carl, Chuck Berry was the true king of rock and roll. With his signature guitar licks, the bluesy pop oh his music, and the deceptive simplicity of his lyrics, Uncle Chuck crafted some of the purest r-n-r around, song upon song of exhilarating, electrifying sound that defined the style. Put simply, Chuck's contribution to popular music can not be overstated. Don't believe me? Ask Mick Jagger, whose band (you may have heard of them--The Rolling Stones) covered some thirty-three billion Chuck Berry tunes over the course of their career. Look at the Yardbirds, with their electrified version of "Too Much Monkey Business." The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Bob Seger, Eric Clapton, and every other human being with an ounce of sense have paid dues to Chuck. And now, I see, it's your turn. Clearly, you're here because you want to get in on this man's work. You, my friend, have made a wise decision. That's the beauty of Berry's work: as long as you have ears (For mono songs, only one ear will suffice) and about two and a half minutes to spare, there's no wrong time to start listening! The question, of course, is where to start? His Best vol. 1 collects 20 tracks from the earlier, arguably more productive part of Chuck's career. You get his country-tinged car song debut single, "Maybellene," which features one of his many amp-popping, totally awesome guitar solos, as well as such classics as "You Can't Catch Me," "Brown Eyed Handsome Man," "Too Much Monkey Business," "Rock And Roll Music," and of course, the masterful "Johnny B. Goode." On top of all that, you get such underappreciated classics as "Havana Moon," "Downbound Train," and "Anthony Boy." Every single song on here is as valuable as a diamond mine, but is this REALLY the place to start with Chuck? Think about it: If you buy this, you really have no choice but to pick up volume 2 as well, which will, assuming you get your copies straight from Amazon, cost a grand total of over 30 bucks. Plus, you only get a total of 40 tracks. Meanwhile, the two-disc Anthology album contains a whopping 50 songs (that's ten more, friend) and costs less than thirty bucks. And if you REALLY want to go in depth, you can pick up the three-CD Chess Box for around 45 bucks. Both the Anthology and the Chess Box fill their CDs nearly to the brim (nothing below an hour, as far as I can tell), neither Volume of His Best reaches the 55 minute mark. And if you insist on only having one CD of Berry, try to hunt down a copy of the epochal Great Twenty-Eight. Its out of print, but you can get it used and rather cheap here on Amazon. G28 is career-spanning and quite satisfying. So, if you insist on only exploring the first part of Berry's career, pick up Volume 1. But if you want a more complete story, pick up the Anthology, the Great Twenty-Eight, or the Chess Box. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Half of Chuck's greatest hits.......2004-02-24

If you buy this disc in tandem with "Greatest Hits II" then you will have almost all of Chuck Berry's greatest hists. The sound quality is very good, there are no live versions (which mar other Berry "greatest hits" packages), and there is nothing but great music here.

It's a shame that Chuck Berry is not universally recognized as one of the greatest rock lyricists and most innovative figures. This CD will convince even skeptics of his brilliance. Without Chuck Berry, there would be no Beatles, Rolling Stones or Kinks, or at least in the forms they eventually took.

This CD contains all of Berry's original early recordings, pristine and beautifully remastered. Who can deny that his way with words was umatched: "He never, ever learned to read or write so well, but he could play a guitar just like a-ringing a bell..." It's a tragedy that most people have grown up listening to inferior musicians do paltry cover versions of the songs Berry wrote and performed better than anyone else.

This set is an absolutely essential component of any collection, of any genre. Chuck Berry was a pioneer with words and music and his influence is sorely underestimated today. Had Chuck Berry been born white, he would be regarded as a rock God instead of being neglected and virtually forgotten in many circles. These 28 magnificent songs just about cover his catalogue of hits. This is a great sampling, but incomplete, so if you want to experience Berry's real genius, branch off into his lesser known songs. But for the money, this one rocks!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent compilation.......2003-07-31

[This review covers BOTH of the "His Best" compilations.]

Chuck Berry. He's been called the godfather of rock by a number of widely successful musical artists, including the Beatles (the most successful band of all time!) How does this hits compilation, The Great Twenty-Eight, measure up? Read on and see!

THE GOOD: You get CB's big hits here. These include, but are not limited to Maybellene, Roll Over Beethoven, School Day, Rock And Roll Music, Sweet Little Sixteen, Johnny B. Goode, and No Particular Place To Go. In addition you get other lesser-known tracks that are also excellent.

THE BAD: There is only one reason I didn't give this compilation five stars. It makes a mistake many other CB hits compilations make - The omission of the Christmas songs (meaning Run Rudolph Run, one of my favorite CB songs, isn't here.) Also, it's a two-volume set, meaning you have to buy two different CDs.

OVERALL: Despite minor shortcomings, this an excellent set. However, I strongly suggest you shell out the extra money and get the three-disc Chess Box instead. It's surprisingly affordable and worth the extra cash.

5 out of 5 stars gone like a cool breeze........2002-01-22

i hate the fifties is "my old amamata" i prefer the descendants of r&r after the british got hold of rock and roll and revamped it in the mid sixties, but berry transcends that, he leaves those mop haired boys at the docks in liverpool standing still. berry was a genius in the sense like johnson, patton and the chicago bluesmen couldnt explain the effects of a guitar strum but could channel electricity into the most lethargic of bodies.
i must admit the pop melodies sometimes force me to play some johnny cash laments in between berry setting the juke on fire but mostly i am humming along with "Rainwater blowing all under my hood, i know it wont do my motor good!"
the man is ferocity and makes you feel good unlike most pop music today that just seems to be a copy of a copy thats got a catching rythm but always seems to be saying the same thing repetitively, it lacks the rawness of berrys lyrics that are sung as though they are the discovery of a new America every time you play a song.
it is pop music and its suppossed to be fun its about living the high school hop that can only be related to kids today as corny and passe' but forget everything lennon, dylan, hayes, mayfield mellencamp, rotten, ice t and all those other people who turned pop music into a lifestyle for two minutes while Chuck Berry is on, and you can really feel the frenzy that would have inhabited a rock and roll show in the fifties.
buy it and cherish every word.

5 out of 5 stars Superlative collection.......2006-10-11

5 out of 5 stars Great value for the money.......2006-04-23

This is simply the best collection of opera arias that I have seen. It's not 100% in that there are a few well-known arias that are not here, but what is here is simply a treasure. The organization is a bit strange, but there's some logic. For example, Disk 6 is mostly from French operas. A seemingly endless amount of glorious music. Just fabulous. You won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Great for the money and a good starter on opera...........2006-01-07

This cd is a splendid collection of songs, and the price is unbeatable; I have but a few minor complaints about the overall product. The cd would have been much more enjoyable if they had put the music in some sort of order, rather than jumping around from artist to artist sporatically. My only other complaint would be that they could have chosen some better vocalists to play some of the songs. For example, in CD 6, track 3: Romeo et Juliette, the singer was not nearly as strong and definative as she should have been and I've definately heard in various other versions that were way better than this. This disappointed me greatly. But even with these few small complaints, this collection is still great and the price is amazing. It includes MOST of the famous opera pieces, as well some great songs that are often overlooked such as the beautiful song from Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg (CD 6, track 16) along with others.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Value.......2005-08-23

I am so impressed by this collection that I must share my joy at getting so many beautiful arias, duets, et al in one collection. It captures many of the great operatic voices in stellar performances spanning the last 50 years. If you are enchanted by beautiful operatic highlights, removed from their operatic storylines, this set is for you. Hours of gorgeous music for practically pennies!

    5 out of 5 stars Chuck rules!.......2004-02-24

If you buy this disc in tandem with "Greatest Hits I" then you will have almost all of Chuck Berry's greatest hists.

These magnificent songs just about cover his catalogue of hits. This is a great sampling, but incomplete, so if you want to experience Berry's real genius, branch off into his lesser known songs. But for the money, this one rocks!

5 out of 5 stars the incredibly fun music of a rock & roll pioneer, Chuck Berry.......1999-11-09

This "His Best, Volume 2" CD is an excellent introduction to the rock 'n' roll legend/ pioneer Chuck Berry. With these 2 "His Best" volumes, you get all the tracks from "The Great Twenty-Eight", plus, you get some extra gems. The first two songs, "Sweet Little Rock 'N' Roller" & the flawless "Little Queenie" (it's incredibly crafty & extremely well executed) get things rockin' real fast--this is definitive Chuck Berry. Although Chuck never really evolved/ changed his style at all, this disc actually beats the first volume. "Let It Rock" is obviously rehashed "Johnny B. Goode", yet it's even better, & Chuck's little guitar thingy really sounds like a train whistle, fitting his witty train lyrics. "Bye Bye Johnny", a lyrical sequel to "Johnny B. Goode" really has a great beat that just puts a picture of the train he sings of in your head. This also contains the must-have, kickin' car song "I Want To Be Your Driver" which is somehow included here (as it was on "The Great Twenty-Eight, though it's in stereo here instead of mono), but not on the still strong "The Chess Box". There's plenty of other great tracks here too like "I'm Talking About You", "Confessin' the Blues" (an excellent example of his bluesier side opposed to his rockier side), "No Particular Place To Go" (with a triumphant song-ending guitar solo), the obsessive "Nadine", the high-flying "Promised Land", & the devastatingly well-crafted drug bust tale "Tulane". There are also 2 fun live songs at the end (including the notorious huge 1972 hit "My-Ding-A-Ling", mercifully included in its single edit opposed to the full-length album version). Granted, with the use of standard rock 'n' roll/ blues progressions on track after track, this stuff does start to sound mighty similiar real quick, but keep in mind the era it was recorded (the first 6 tracks were all recorded in the 1950s) & how hugely influential Chuck was. And in all seriousness, this really is great music--Chuck had a great voice & his guitar playing & lyrics deliver loads of fun. On the downside, "Come On" is rather weak & forced (& is additionally marred by Martha Berry's vocals--she sleepwalked through/ didn't give a damn about her performance), & "Jaguar and Thunderbird" appears in superior form as "County Line" on the "Rock 'N Roll Rarities" CD. But overall the track listing hits the spot in a big way--almost every track is great, & even a track like the jokey "Too Pooped To Pop" is fun. I'd definitely recommend this as a first purchase--it's a dynamite best-of CD.

4 out of 5 stars Chuck Berry - after the peak.......1998-09-28

This CD covers Chuck Berry's recordings from mid-1958 up through the early 70's. About half the cuts are classic Berry rockers of the late 50's and early 60's. They are great rock and roll numbers, but did not do well on the charts. There are mid-60's releases from when Chuck made a US comeback, e.g. Nadine and No Particular Place to Go. The rest is filler - 2 bluesy cuts from early 60's LP's, 2 off-color live recordings from England, and a couple of other obscurities. If you are going to buy only one Chuck Berry CD, get Vol 1 instead of this volume.

I agree Bunny is one of souls best kept secret it's ashame that his compilation is so imcomplete though. Don't get me wrong the songs here are good but were are some of his hit singles like "Girl Don't Make Me Wait" "Only You" "Let the Good Times Roll" "Let Me Party With You".

        4 out of 5 stars Soul's best-kept secret.......1998-07-16

If you're into the sophisticated soul of Philadelphia International, you've got to hear this. From Sigler's great version of "Love Train", to "Sweeter Than The Berry" and the magnificient "That's How Long I'll Be Loving You", it's a treat from a singer way overdue for recognition. Great liner notes, too.
