Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ah, the memories!.......2005-01-17

This is a really good collection from a small record label that housed several great now nearly forgotten bands. All of the songs are well crafted and each artist has it's own personality. The only problem I've found with anything from this label is the fidelity of the recordings. Even on CD reissues, the mastering leaves a lot to be desired. Given that the bulk of this stuff was recorded in the mid to late 1970s, it sounds flat compared to a lot of records that came out around the same time. Still, if you're in it for the song, this is a great purchase.
My favorite stuff is by Earthquake, who had an amazing blend of big rock n'roll swagger in the form of lead vocalist John Doukas and guitarist Robbie Dunbar. With a band that blended a hard hitting sound influenced from classic 60's Stones and Who, they were really a force to be dealt with. In fact, drummer Steve Nelson has that fire like Keith Moon circa 1970. They are the unsung heroes of this collection given the fact that it was they who originally financed the start up of the Beserkley label.
It's good to hear tracks from the Greg Kihn Band before he had the hits. Originally a folkie, he too had a gift for writing great songs and had a really unique sounding rock band to back him up. Greg had a great voice and guitarist Dave Carpender's fluid playing really reminds me of Rolling Stone's guitarist Mick Taylor, especially on "Madison Avenue Man".
The Rubinoos are simply the best power pop band around. What blows me away about these guys is that they were SO young and such good players and singers. Out of all the bands, I find that these guys have the most memorable and lasting songs. Tommy Dunbar's songs are really well crafted and Jon Rubin's voice is incredible and sincere. Apparently, these guys are still going strong, playing periodically and that's a good thing.
Jonathan Richman is still going strong too, with an audience that he built up after deconstructing his music to fit his psyche. Fortunately for him, his loyal fanbase has followed him wherever he went. The most quirky of all the artists here, his stuff is still fun and entertaining. Some people won't get it, but those who do find a bit of comfort in connecting with his unique vision. Funny, my Dad didn't get it when I played Jonathan's records back then! "Who the @#%&*is THAT?!!"
All in all, whether you were there or not, you'll find this is a good time capsule for fun rock n' roll from Berkeley, CA or rather, Beserkley. It's really nice to finally have these songs on CD.
