4 out of 5 stars A Classic!.......2007-07-02

This compilation cd is a great collection of Santana favorites. The instrumentals only feature lifts these recordings from a 60's/70's, etc. retrospective into a terrific adult contemporary classic.

3 out of 5 stars Santana The Best Instrumentals.......2007-03-19

This CD has a number of Santana's classic hits like Samba Pa Ti, Flor de Luna, and Soul Sacrifice that I really enjoyed, however, in my opinion those are the only really good songs and this is a mediocre album.

5 out of 5 stars Best Instrumentals.......2006-11-06

This is great collection. This is the flavor of Santana I enjoy most.

4 out of 5 stars From the inside!!.......2005-08-20

This is a very good compilation of only instrumentals by the master. My only regret is that "Every Step of the Way" from "Caravanserai" is missing. That is one of the most powerful Santana songs ever. Also, my favorite in this compilation is "Aquamarina".

5 out of 5 stars Just the music.......2005-01-09

There are many great guitarists in the world but only Carlos Santana can move me like he does. Long ago I made my own version of this album on cassette because I wanted all these great instumentals on one tape. Finally it has been done and been done right. Europa is easily the best instrumental number ever and I would argue one of the best songs of all time. It is perfectly married with all the other great Santana numbers that were usually the best thing on their respective albums.
Put this on, turn the lights down low and lose yourself in the music.

5 out of 5 stars The Queen of Singers.......2005-12-05

Any discussion of Japanese popular music must begin with Hibari Misora who is often called the "Queen of Singers" in Japan. Hibari began singing professionally as a child and her career spanned more than 40 years, with numerous hits including "Ringo Oiwake", "Kanashii Sake" and "Yawara." Perhaps her most famous song, "Kawa no nagare no yoni" (Life is like a flowing river) was released in 1989, the year of her death. It was later voted the greatest Japanese song of all time in a poll by NHK Television. Hibari Misora's songs are often credited with helping the Japanese get through the difficult postwar years. She also starred in dozens of movies. Hibari was only 52 when she died and was considered a national treasure. On the day of her death, regular TV programming in Japan was interrupted to bring the sad news to the nation.

A year before she passed away, she performed at a concert in a Tokyo stadium. Despite overwhelming pain in her legs, she sang dozens of songs that night, all the while reassuring the audience that she was alright. I have a video recording of that emotionally-charged concert. My wife, who's from Japan, often cries when she watches it. I've always had the feeling that Hibari herself knew this would be one of her final performances.

Hibari Misora had an unswerving dedication to her music and her fans. She is still missed. In Japan, many young people won't admit they like Enka music which was Hibari's specialty. But if you go to the bar districts late at night, the sounds of karaoke Enka fill the air. If you want to give Enka a try, there's no better place to start than with Hibari-san.

5 out of 5 stars No word can describe the art and music of Misora Hibari.......2005-05-07

The biggest shock hit heart of every Japanese people when the sad news spread the entire island....Now a long gone, but not forgotten Japanese legendary Enka singer Misora Hibari peaks at her best in these three volume album series. I have been looking for BEST sorted Albums, and I finally found one (Three), while EVERY and EACH of her album is excellent and can not go wrong anyways, this is a good start. You may never look any further after collectin three for generations to come, and for yourself.

If you are Japanese, then there is nothing more to say about this singer, if you are not, but has the deep soul, and appreciation for Japanese history, and culture, and its people, well, there you go. Be a part of Japan.

5 out of 5 stars Garland and Piaf stand aside . . . here's Hibari!.......2005-02-04

One morning a few years back, I was in a hotel room in Osaka dressing for a business meeting and vainly scrolling through the TV channels looking for anything in English. Suddenly I found myself immersed in an inexpressibly lovely song, so I sat down on the bed to watch for a minute. An hour later, it had become clear that I was watching a documentary on a multi-faceted entertainer whose career apparently began in childhood and spanned stage, cinema, and concert halls. Finally tearing myself away, I arrived late to my meeting, able to talk only about this mysterious person. It turned out to be Misora Hibari (or Hibari Misora, if you use the western convention of putting the surname last). It was the tenth anniversary of her untimely death from cancer, and programming all over Japan was mourning her passing.

Since then I have acquired every audio and video recording of her that I can find, even buying a multi-region DVD player to handle her Japan-only releases.

Despite wide reading on the topic, I know only enough of Japanese culture to know that I will never really understand it. But I do know great music and towering musicality when I hear it. Art at its pinnacle knows no language or cultural boundaries. Hibari took her art to this pinnacle. She sang in a wide range of styles, from traditional Japanese enka to western jazz-age to overproduced 80's stadium fare. She sang dressed as a geisha, as a samurai, as Fred Astaire, as a torch singer, and as a feathered and sequined "megastar" that would do a drag queen proud.

But, Lordy . . . what singing it was. As with Edith Piaf, Hibari could bring you to tears without understanding a word she was singing. As with Judy Garland, Hibari had but to open her mouth for you to know you were not hearing just an accomplished singer, but an aching, striving soul that had finally found its release through a mortal's vocal chords.

If Hibari had been born in the West, we would all know her as well as we know our other cultural icons. Don't let the inscrutability of Japan and its culture deprive you of this treasure. Hibari belongs to us all. Without knowing a word she is singing, you'll know exactly what she is saying.

5 out of 5 stars Hibari, the greatest Japanese Singer.......2001-10-10

I have been a fan of Misora Hibari since the early 1060's when I was stationed in Japan. She is a magnificent singer as well as an accomplished actress. I have her original greatest 50's album which I purchased in 1966. Many of the songs on this album are in Volume 2. To me, Hibari is a true legend in Japanese music. I miss her, even though her music is still alive through recordings. This album is truly representative of her talented voice. I hope everyone else enjoys it as much as I do.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2001-03-10

This Volume 2 is a wonderful collection of Misora Hibari's greatest hits songs. Hibari a multi-talented star and artist truly missed. To her last song and my favorite "Kawa No Nagare No Yoni" to her famous "Yawara" are among this collection of Enka melodies especially written for her talented voice. Also included in this disk is "Midare Gami" another song that is touching and overwhelming with emotions.

        5 out of 5 stars Volume 2 complements Volume 1 perfectly.......2005-02-14

Around the same time that Columbia released "The Essential Bob Dylan" in the US, it also released "The Best of Bob Dylan Volume 2" in most overseas markets, a sequel to Volume 1 which was released in 1997.

"The Best of Bob Dylan Volume 2" (17 tracks, 77 min., plus bonus disk) starts off with the 'excuse' that was needed for the release, namely the excellent (and Oscar-winning) "Things Have Changed" from the "Wonder Boys" soundtrack. After that, the remaining 16 tracks provide a chronological overview of Dylan's best known songs not found on Volume 1, and thus form a perfect complement to Volume 1. The highlights are many, including "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall", "I Want You", "Simple Twist of Faith", "Changing of the Guards" (all of which are missing from "The Essential Bob Dylan"), "Hurricane", "Rainy Day Woman", and so on. The audio quality is superb. So you ask, what more can one expect of a "greatest hits" album? A bonus disk, of course!

The bonus disk (18 min.) provides live tracks of the epic "Highlands" (from "Time Out of Mind"), followed by "Blowing in the Wind". They show Dylan in his element, and I wish there were more official releases of the "Never-Ending Tour".

In all, this is an excellent compilation. Highly recomended!

4 out of 5 stars Best of Vol. 2, Six Reviews in One.......2003-10-01

Throughout the years the suits at Columbia, then Sony have tried to make more money of Mr. D by mixing and matching his material, not just in a Greatest Hits compilation, but as a "Best of Import" from Japan, Holland, Sweden, or some other far away place. They tout them as better, different, remastered, a gold version and lots of times they'll build these compilations around a song that hadn't appeared on any other album.

The current favorite is the wonderful song, "Things have changed," which shows up on five different sets available today.

"The Best of series Vol. 1 and Vol. 2" Imports are the only one of the 5 sets that you can get separately and, since they couldn't put "Things Have Changed on both CDs, they put "Shelter From The Storm," from the Tom Cruise, Cuba Gooding move "Jerry Maguire" on the first disc. If you were to buy both discs in this set you'd be out over fifty bucks. Of course, there isn't a bad song on the discs, but if you're like me, you already own most of them.

"The Very Best of Vol. 1 & 2" Swedish version has 33 songs on it, all available elsewhere except, of course "Things Have Changed." The songs are about the same as on the other compilations and this one will set you back thirty-three dollars.

"The Ultimate Collection," is of course not the ultimate collection, but it is a collection of 33 songs, very similar in scope to the songs in the other collection and built around, "Things Have Changed." This version will shrink you wallet by thirty-nine dollars.

"The Essential Bob Dylan" double CD set has 30 songs on it and has a nice flow to it. Like the other compilations mentioned here it features "Things Have Changed." You'll have to fork over twenty-one dollars to get this one. It's the most reasonably priced of the bunch, and so it's the only one I'm giving five stars to.

"The Essential Bob Dylan" Import has six more songs on it and it'll cost you 16 more dollars. That's a lot of money to pay to get those extra six songs.

Okay after rounding them up and telling you a little about them, I have to say that I'm pretty disappointed in Sony about this group. Unlike "Greatest Hits, Vol. 2" which like these isn't really a Greatest Hits compilation, these CDs cost a whole gang of money and give us only one new song. "GH 2" gave us a half dozen new tunes, so we (not me, cuz I wasn't born yet) didn't feel ripped off when we bought it. Also, the "Biograph" compilation was stuffed with new songs. Ah well, my recommendation would be to buy the American version of "The Essential Bob Dylan" for twenty-one dollars and shine the rest of them on. Five stars for that one, four for the rest.

              Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Predictable but good.......2003-07-16

I came across "Breakdown" last week at a local record store near my work. The track list appealed to me despite the fact that I don't care for Christina Aguilera ("Beautiful"), T.A.TU ("All the Things She Said"), and the Junkie XL remix of "A Little Less Conversation". Thankfully I didn't pay for the two cd disc as much as what Amazon is currently offering this cd at. The 2 cd compilation isn't what I would consider to be the best dance mix cd there is but it certainly isn't the worst. Other than the predictability of some of the songs chosen for this compilation, my biggest beef with the compilation is the mixing job Adam White does on this cd. Just like Dave Waxman on the latest "Ultra Trance" cd, Adam White doesn't bother trying to make the songs flow into each other and giving the cd a cohesive sound. And what is up with using such dated songs like Snap!'s "Rhythm is a Dancer"? That is so early '90s as is N-Trance's "Set You Free" (which is a lot better than Planet Soul's version of the song). The songs I do enjoy is the ridiculously cheesy dance versions of "All Out of Love" (Air Supply), "Heaven" (Bryan Adams), and "Glory of Love" (Peter Cetera). Unfortunately I found some of the songs a bit on the repetitious side like "Make Luv" and "Just the Way You Are". House music was never really my thing. Although not flawless, "Breakdown" is an entertaining cd to listen to on the weekend before hitting the nightclubs I think.
