My Favorite from Possessed........2007-01-01
This is my favorite release from Possessed, this one is epicalegically deviant compared to their first ...Death Metal. This sounds more like, Celtic Frost, Bathory, Entombed, And Terrorizer. Buy it, Must Own!!
really good but not quite great........2006-07-07
This album in my opinion is a B+. It is not as good as churches or eyes, but it's worth buying. The production was on the weak side with this recording. Carl Candedy produced instead of Randy Burns, who was on another project at the time. No knock against Canedy, but the production prevented this from being an A+. It has got some really heavy stuff nonetheless. Most of the songs are strong with the exception of a couple weak ones. The guitar riffs are cool as well as the drumming. As far as vocals go, NOBODY in death/black metal does it like Jeff Becerra. He has an awesome guttaral grunting style. All in all a must buy for metal fans.
I like it........2006-02-04
The production isn't as bad on this as it is on Seven Churches to me, but it's not as good as on Eyes of Horror, either.
What they needed was Joe Satriani producing all three albums. That would have been awesome. (YES, HE DID PRODUCE "Eyes of Horror"). If anyone remembers from the 80's, alot of the best Metal music had crappy recordings. Didn't hurt the music any, unless you were anal and just HAD to have pristine recordings.
I love this album. Brings back great memories.
ugghh.......2005-12-02
how can a band follow up the greatest death metal album ever recorded with this? personally, since I am in a band, I will tell you how. Being in a band gets old, boring, and bland. Listen to this album, and you will see what I mean. The unlistenable production is not just hype...its reeeeallllly bad. Worse than 'and justice for all', or 'st. anger'. dont mean to throw in metallica, but lets just say, you can have the greatest home stereo in the world, and this CD will sound like crap. just buy '7 churches' and make that the only possessed you ever hear. next.
Perfect album..........2005-07-16
In my view this is a major classic of the period when bay area thrash metal was morphing into death metal...this is just a beautiful album, filled with evil riffs, great songs, incredible vocals, extremely cool solos, etc. Probably my favorite metal album of all time. Get it!

Excellent album.......2006-11-10
Cans brings out the voice of Joacim Cans, lead singer of Hammerfall.
Excellent album.
Possibly better than HammerFall?!.......2005-04-20
this is a brilliant CD, i really love it, the guitar work by stefan is incredible, and of course joacim is brilliant as usual, this CD is better than Chapter V, and most of the other HF, a really good album, best tracks are;
Fields of yesterday - one of my favs, brilliant
soul collector - very good, one of my favs
dreams - excellent, and quite 80's
Beyond the Gates - the best song!, a truely cool song 11/10
buy this, it is also a bit more like heavy metal than powermetal at times, very good, very surprising!.
Great voice weak cd.......2005-04-06
Theres no doubt this guy can sing I saw Hammerfall live and still have flashbacks. So a solo project is going to be differant. I guess it is to differant for me. I only like 1 song on this cd "soul collector" everything else does nothing for me. I just reviewed the newest Hammerfall cd and this cd is very similar. So if you like this go for the new Hammerfall. But if your a fan of "legacy of kings" or "renegade" avoid both these.
Better than all Hammerfall discs combined !.......2004-08-03
First of all, to be honest, I'm not a Hammerfall fan. I actually find them very boring and cheesy. I think they've never really evolved and improved as a band, but kept releasing lots of generic Euro power metal discs to the already oversatured genre. So I can't say I was psyched when I heard that Cans was going to release a solo album as I don't care for his voice that much. But when I heard the album was going to feature some of the most talented musicians around, I decided to give it a chance and I'm glad I did.
Besides Cans' bandmate from Hammerfall, Stefan Elmgren, playing some of the guitars, we also hear Mike Chlasciak of Halford and John West fame. Chlasciak is a great guitarist and his presence on this disc makes all the difference. Mat Sinner from Primal Fear is on bass and the drum work is handled by a personal favourite of mine: Mr Mark Zonder from Fates Warning. His playing on Beyond the Gates is nothing similar to his amazing work with Fates Warning or Chroma Key, but because this is primarily a solid heavy metal disc, I somehow didn't look for his polyrhythmic work or mindblowing cymbals.
Although Hammerfall's vocalist's solo album, Beyond the Gates holds some key differences to Cans' band. Musically there is more depth in the songcraft and the melodies are far from cheesy happy metal. Cans penned most of these songs when he was going through a bad time in his life and therefore the melodies and particularly the lyrics are a lot darker and the songs refrain from cheesy sing-along choruses. Cans hasn't written the entire album on his own though. Enter Annihilator axeman Jeff Waters giving his trademark sound to the ending track and David Chastain co-writing the title song. This is a great combination of great musicians and songwriting. As a result, the outcome is pure melodic metal with killer riffs and tight instrumentation. Most of the songs are between 4 and 5 minutes, never longer. The album does seem to lose a bit of its momentum towards the last third with the power ballads but that's acceptable as far as I'm concerned.
The first half of the disc is decidedly more energetic and less derivative than the second half. The album starts with heavy and pounding tracks with Joacim Cans' vocals sitting comfortably in the centre of the tracks. Cans however delivers the tunes with a lot of conviction and anger, therefore surprising me. It is a wonder to me why he is doing those constantly high-pitched power vocals in Hammerfall as opposed to employing some of his darker vocal stylings. It sure would add a lot of diversity to Hamerfall's vocal melodies.
I'd prefer this album over any Hammerfall CD, period. This is a quality heavy/power metal disc which should have direct appeal to any melodic metal fan that enjoys his metal heavy and merciless. The guitar solos coming from Chlasciak are needless to say top notch and Mark Zonder shines on these tracks as an awesome drummer. Beyond the Gates has been getting some really good feedback so far and somehow I don't think this will be the last disc we'll hear from Joacim Cans. And if his future releases are going to be as good as this one, they're certainly more than welcome. I see Force of Evil's self-titled disc is also recommended on this page and I fully agree with that. Make sure to give it a listen if you're into traditional heavy metal with a more aggressive singer.
Surprisingly Heavy!.......2004-05-24
I have to admit I was not that exited about Jocaim Cans coming out with a solo album since I really am not into Hammerfall or other cheesy power metal of the like.
What convinced me to buy this however were many reviews I read saying that this album was much heavier and darker than Hammerfall and indeed they were right. Most importantly this album is not only heavier and darker but contains great songs from begining to end. I am really impressed with the quanity of great songs even towards the end of the album. My picks for the most killer tracks are the title track (At the Gates) and Merciless though almost every track is great. I read that Red Light was selected for a video which is ironically one of only a few weaker tracks on the album IMO.
The production on the album is just how I like too, heavy, thick, clear, and very modern sounding. I must also give much credit to the musicans that collaborated with Cans on this project to create these killer songs. There are some killer riffs and solos on this album that were much more than an afterthought and the drum and bass work are top notch too.
If you like bands like Angel Dust, Tad Morose, with some old Judas Priest influence you will love this album. I have gained some new respect for Jocaim Cans now that I know he appreciates metal that is actually heavy, but please Cans include pics of your other band members in your booklet this project was not just about you.
If you are looking for some great heavy (not power, not prog, not death) metal than this is for you. I know this will be one of my top 5 albums of the year. Beware Hammerfall fans, this one is heavy so you've been warned!

Customer Reviews:
Seven Churches it is not.......2003-10-15
ok, if you've never heard possessed DO NOT start w/ this record or you probably won't want to check out their wonderful seven churches album. the story goes that the band was looking for a much "rawer" sound when recording their follow to the staggering debut. well, i guess you could say they acheived it but it lacked any of the punch of seven churches tight cohesiveness. further, the band acts as though they completely forgot how to use the amazing broken time signatures of the first album which to me gave it quite a bit of its, um, charm. most of the songs sound the same and most of the lyrics are rehash rehash rehash.
that said, if you get the version of beyond the gates that has eyes of horror tacked onto the end you may actually have something of worth. eyes' production is thinner than seven chruches but its at least clear and rather tight. the songs are much better than beyond the gates though not as good as churches. what you've got is probably the middle road between the two albums. one thing that makes eyes particuarly interesting is its inclusion of "swing of the axe" which was written at the same time as the material from chruches, but it lacks the punchy production of randy burns.
overall i'd give the cd three stars if you get the version w/ both albums. if you're thinking of getting beyond the gates by itself, i believe i'd recommend completely forgetting it exists. well, maybe we could salvage the cover art........

Are the Gates of Eden Opening or Closing for X of Eden?.......2001-10-24
The CD, Beyond the Gates of Eden is good. It's got catchy tunes and the songs aren't repetivite. It's not a happy-sounding album, but it's not depressing either. It's definately worth listening to. In my opinion, the Gates of Eden are opening for them.

Sin Origin is one of the greatest bands.......2005-03-30
Oh my God! This is so awsome and kick ass of a cd and anyone who knows good music should buy this as soon as possible. From the moment I heard Sin Origin I knew they would be one of my favored bands for my eternity. Morbid Souls is such an incredible song that no words can amount to. The song is so awsome and gives you a song that doesn't miss out on anything for getting cut short, so if you want more to the song they have definately already taken care of that. A black metal band they are and are not appreciated enough in my mind. They are beyond expectations. They bring black metal to a level that should be respected and treasured by everyone. I have the cd and I know how great they are, they will be epic. I also have their second cd which I highly recommend because it is not one to miss out on. The SECOND CD is called "Night Aeternal" and it is sure to be a pleaser. The songs on "Beyond the Cemetary Gates" are awsome, "Entombed by Torchlight" is another great one to go down in the books along with the featured song "Beyond the Cemetery Gates" and these should not be missed out by anyone. The second cd "Night Aeternal" is another cd that exploits Sin Origin's great talent and needs to be recognized by everyone. Believe in Sin Origin and let them feed your hunger for black metal.
Thanks,
Jason Fitzgerald
