1 out of 5 stars Just say NO to this album.......2007-04-18

This album is utter trash. It is poorly mixed and is simply a rehash of all RBF's old songs. If you're really an RBF fan, you'll either have all their previously released albums already or you'll buy "Our Live Album is Better Than Your Live Album" which was released by the band after ditching their Jive label. This record is a last ditch effort on part of Jive to make one last bit of profit off one of the world's greatest ska bands. Don't feed the suits! Feed Reel Big Fish and buy "Our Live Album is Better Than Your Live Album" instead.

1 out of 5 stars Reel Big Fish Rocks.......2006-12-25

Reel Big Fish rocks, but "Our Live Album IS Better Than Your Live Album" is the best greatest hits you WILL ever get because live RBF is more talkitive, more funny in that way, and it makes their live stuff better, just the raw sound of ska music as well, it's called life, love it.

1 out of 5 stars Jive does horrible job with this one! Not band's fault..........2006-12-23

Unfortunately Jive Records managed to show everyone the true stupidity that is behind every major label. Was it greed? Yes.

This album's quality is not anything to be obsessed over when compared to "Our Live Album is Better Than Your Live Album" which the band released themselves. If you like Reel Big Fish then let their own album released on their own impress you, not something that Jive Records has beaten to death out of corporate greed.

1 out of 5 stars Do the Band a Favor; Don't Buy This........2007-05-05

It's a shame that a band as talented as Reel Big Fish is being exploited like this. If you didn't know, Jive Records recently dropped the band (after several years of them begging to be let go), but is now releasing this collection to make a last bit of profit. As such, you really shouldn't buy this album. But fear not! If you're looking to get a good new collection of RBF hits, check out their new live album, aptly entitled "Our Live Album is Better Than Your Live Album." It's much better anyway. Reel Big Fish is one of the most talented bands around today and their live show is amazing, so there's really no reason to buy this album instead of the live one.

4 out of 5 stars A decent collection.......2007-04-03

Like it or not, Reel Big Fish still finds a fan base out there where MTV and the record companies somehow failed. Ironically, after dropping their lable, Jive decided to release a greatest hits CD featuring a decent span of work over the past decade. I personally love the 'Big Fish, and this CD captures some highlights worth mentioning. There's a few tracks I don't necessarily care for, but every fan has their own favorites when it comes to RBF.

The title "Greatest Hit...and more" is a little quip regarding RBF's only real mainstream hit "Sell Out" (again, one of my least favorite songs of theirs). Give these guys some credit though...very few one hit wonders actually live past one album.

I honestly bought the album based on the cover. It's a nice little piece of art, sporting the old school fish that symbolizes the bands roots. What was dissapointing was the lack of any extras. There's very little in the flap itself...literally only a few snap shots and that's it. No lyrics, credits, commentaries, no anything. That's kinda bogus for a greatest hits CD...then again the band itself probably had very little to do with this CD given the circumstances.

If you're new to Reel Big Fish, this is a great place to start. Don't bother getting the clean version of the CD (I don't know if there is one or not) because then you're missing the point of 90's ska. It's humorous music that pokes fun at all subjects. Not like the crappy emo panzy rock you hear these days about how much you want to cut your wrist because some girl dumped you.

Not only that, but these guys sound amazing live (very unlike any emo band...I've almost hurled seeing some on TV). Which brings me to my last point. I'd recommend RBF's newest live CD. It has a ton of extras. The band's raw talent leaves you believing you're listening to a recording...seriously it's that good. Plus you're getting more bang for your buck.

But again, this is a good CD if you're new to the band...if not I wouldn't really bother unless you're just too lazy to compile your own collection of their CD's on your computer and make your own greatest hits CD (I would be one of them).

1 out of 5 stars don't buy it.......2007-02-26

Don't buy this. horrible quality, go and get "our live album is better than your live album"

and go out to one of their shows and buy a shirt or four.

5 out of 5 stars Apparently I'm in the minority for this album... but I dig it!.......2007-02-07

I think this album sounds consistently good from start to finish - yes, it is remastered and will sound a little different than the original recordings. While I still crank up the other RBF albums, I spin this one as well and enjoy ripping right through all the tracks. If you want to get into the issues behind Jive and RBF, that is a different matter - but the CD sounds damned good... perhaps the other people just want to vent their frustrations over big business politics and money grabs... more power to 'em. Or maybe they listend to it on a crap stereo. However, politics and business aside, it is a rockin' album and if you like RBF it is well worth the listen.

1 out of 5 stars Aaron Barret (lead singer) Says...........2006-12-23

So Jive just sent us a box of the "Greatest Hit" album (how nice of them) and i couldn't resist popping it in the old CD player and checking it out. To my absolute horror i realized that they did a really awful re-mastering job and made all the music sound like CRAP!! it sounds like somebody went in and cranked up the low end and now the bass and kick drum are obnoxiously loud (we're not hip hop you Jive turkeys, isn't that why you dropped us!?)!! Also, it sounds like they put a ton of compression on everything and now there are no dynamics! (compression is an effect that is used to smooth out recordings by making everything the same level, in this case to make all the songs the same volume) They must have had some unpaid intern put this thing together, maybe someone from the mail room or possibly just someone off the street who happened to be walking by?! lol Jive continues to screw us every chance they get! I'm sure most people wouldn't notice but i do and it pisses me off!! haha Anyway, don't let anyone you know (or don't know) waste their hard earned cash on this piece of crap!! Happy Holidays and stuff, thanks for all your support, we'll see ya in 2007!!

The long-overdue release of this seminal collection on CD is cause for celebration; not only that, but Delmark Records added four previously unreleased tracks, making this CD all the more essential for harp fans in general and Junior Wells fans in particular (and what harp fan could not like Wells?). The tracks on Blues Hit Big Town were recorded in 1953-54 and are thus of historical interest as well; these are Wells's first recordings, done shortly after he joined the Muddy Waters Band. From the slow, smoking "Hoodoo Man" and the title track, to the tight, high-powered "Cut That Out" and "Tomorrow Night," everything here is first-rate, and the added bonus tracks make this re-release a special treat. --Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars Junior's magnum opus.......2007-01-10

Rare is the occasion when, for the rest of your life, you will forever live in the shadow of your first published work, be it music, literature, film, etc. Such is the case with Blues Hit Big Town, unmatched by Junior Wells since in its virtuosity, intensity and creativity. Chicago attack harp at its zenith. The best rendition of Hoodoo Man Blues resides on this recording.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for the archives.......2006-11-23

I completely agree with the reviewer from Exeter. This disk manages to sound both raw and polished--vivid and not overproduced.

The alternate version of "Lord Lord" has a few seconds of control room talkback before the music begins. I usually don't like this gimmick but in this case it's a magic glimpse of the collaboration behind these delicious tracks.

There are some tracks that seem mostly of historical or archival interest, and I'm not a historian of blues. But even putting those tracks aside, this disk is superb and worthwhile, not only for adding context to any Wells or Chicago blues collection, but also for its own sheer pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best Junior Wells cd that will ever be........2004-07-26

1965's "Hoodoo Man" may be the best known, but it's been all downhill for Wells since this amazing stuff, done as a teenager in the fifties. Featuring guitar by Louis Myers, Elmore James, and Muddy Waters. Blues lovers should tell their punk-rock loving friends about this one: this has all the spirit of a young man's urge to break all the rules, but with CHOPS.

5 out of 5 stars File under essential.......2004-07-15

Originally released in 1977, this album brings together Junior Wells' earliest singles, recorded in 1953 and 1954 when he was just a teenager (he turned 20 in December, 1954). This 1998 CD reissue adds six bonus tracks, five of which are alternate takes, and while the liner notes are somewhat sparse, the music is top-notch.

Junior Wells' first LP came out more than ten years later, in 1965, but these tough early singles, taped when Junior was Muddy Waters' harmonica player, are at least as seminal. Junior's sublime first reading of "Hoodoo Man" is here, alongside a rollicking "Cut That Out", a lean, mean "Please Throw This Poor Dog A Bone", the swinging "Tomorrow Night", and the blazing instrumentals "Eagle Rock" and "Junior's Wail".
Junior's rendition of John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson's "'Bout The Break Of Day" is every bit as powerful as "Hoodoo Man" (another Williamson-number) and he sounds thoroughly menacing on the grinding title track.

As well as playing with Muddy Waters, Junior Wells was the lead singer of the Aces for a while, a group which consisted of brothers Louis and Dave Myers on guitar and bass respectively, and drummer extraordinaire Fred Below. They back him on most of these recordings, and Johnnie Jones lends his considerable talents on piano on the 1953 sides.
And the great Elmore James appears as well, wielding his smouldering bottleneck on the master take of "Hoodoo Man". Piano player Otis Spann from the Muddy Waters band is rolling the 88s on the 1954 recordings, and Waters himself shows up as well, backing Wells on guitar.

These early recordings are some of Junior Wells' finest and grittiest, and while his blistering harmonica playing was often more or less absent on his 60s and 70s waxings, it takes centre stage on these superb 50s singles.
A must-have.

5 out of 5 stars Even Before Hoodoo Man Blues, Junior Was Fantastic!!.......2002-11-08

Junior Wells has always been my personal favorite of the great blues harp players. With his soulful, punchy harmonica technique, exemplified on his classic "Hoodoo Man Blues" album, Junior created one of the coolest harp sounds around. With "Blues Hit Big Town," we are treated to the earliest recordings Junior made.

What this record shows primarily, is that even in his late teens, Junior Wells was an astounding harp player. On this record, Junior plays stuff that easily ranks among the finest harp ever laid down. His singing is also good, though his voice has not yet taken on the grittiness that would eventually make him one a the great blues singers.

The music on this album is some truly great Chicago blues. Whether on the original take of the classic "Hoodoo Man," the great instrumental "Eagle Rock," or the down in the alley sound of "Please Throw This Poor Dog A Bone," Junior's music runs the gamut of great Chicago sound.

The bottom line: another excellent entry into Junior Wells' library. Though not quite the perfection he would achieve on "Hoodoo Man Blues," it's pretty close, and a more than worthy addition to any blues fan's collection.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Latino Velvet's Best.......2004-01-25

Velvetism is for all the real homies that judge music based on quality and stay away from all that commercial garbage. Every song is tight. I've been following Latino Velvet a long time and, song for song, this the their best album. It's not nearly as hardcore as Baby Beesh in Dopehouse but the beats are 95% better than most rappers. This is an album for anyone who grew up on Frost and love that pimp mode, player style.

5 out of 5 stars Best album of 2002!!!.......2003-09-23

Jay Tee of N2DEEP and Baby Beesh of Potna Deuce come together and again produce a classic album. Top notch production and features make this album one of if not the best album of 2002. She Was A Hustler is a tight track featuring Mr. Kee and Merciless shines on Vamanos while What's Goin' On? should have been a certified radio hit.

5 out of 5 stars You can't pass this one up.......2003-04-11

This is one of the most sickest heated laced up albums Beesh and Jay Tee have done so far, the lyrics were too tight, and the beats were off the hook, no b.s. this album is the fire. If you ain't feeling it, all I can say is you must be a square that don't deserve to have the album in the first place. Get this asap homies, alrato

    4 out of 5 stars 4.5 Star album for Big Mike's 3rd - My favorite of his.......2005-07-31

After almost 2 years Big Mike is back with my favorite of his 3 albums. The other 2 still get 4 stars but I think this one is a little better. Packed with 20 songs, 4 are classics, 1 is almost classsic material, 2 I skip, and the other 13 are good or great songs. Guests are on about 8 of the songs so you get a good deal of Big Mike. Production is rather good as well, Mike Banks does 7 songs, the always great Mike Dean does 5 and the equally solid Mr. Lee does 6, Mike Dean & Mr. Lee collaborate for 2 as well. Lyrics are typical Big Mike - alot of gangsta songs w/ hard beats and some slower mor erelaxing ones as well. A great album, to have for fans of Big Mike or someone who wants to hear a real gangsta from the south, not one of them candy cupcake rappers that's on the radio all day!

    1 out of 5 stars Without A Hit.......2005-03-10

The hardest hit on here is track 15 "How You Want It" featuring Outlawz & Grudge. Admittingly I've heard better from the ex Geto Boys member on his first solo Somethin' Serious. I use this to let it beat in my trunk. I hate to be so down on Big Mike, but some of the production seems unfinished and or too much like they were being rushed. His lyrics come to the rescue with "Heads Like Us" and "Better Now" featuring Devin & MC Breed. Enough playing get that Big Mike Somethin' Serious, because it is.

2 out of 5 stars the implosion of big mike.......2003-10-04

A bad album of Big Mike proportions. Generic Ronco beats with a very sloppy Big Mike trying in vain to keep up. I give it an extra star for the comedic effect. I could say its a shame because he used to be great, blah blah blah. Sell out or wash out, the results are the same. Chin the pole Mikey.

5 out of 5 stars hard to hit.......2000-05-28

hard to hit is one of tightest cd to me and my partnaz. the beats are big and hardcore. the lyrics are complex and quicc. It's a shame the real don't get props as a lot of succaz. big mike has grownup lyrics but stay true to the streets at the same time stay'n true to himself. one of the trillest tapes i've heard in a long time. the whole tape is a hit. i would tell you all the cut but i don't have it. when i go to get it i will be my third copy. and when i lose that or get beat for it i will get it again.

5 out of 5 stars This is album is Nice........1999-05-31

This album by Big Mike is his best work since Something Serious. He, along with Scarface, have been the best rappers on Rap A Lot label. But once again this album will go with out notice if you don't live in the south. But make no mistake about, if you like hard core rap, this is a must buy.

If there's one thing about Big Sugar, it's that they sure knew how to write hits. If you're a fan of classic rock, rock, alternative rock, or any kind of rock, you'd like these songs. In fact, you've probably heard them on a radio and not known who they were by. Now you know: Big Sugar.

4 out of 5 stars The last CD from Big Sugar.......2003-09-24

Sadly this is going to be the last CD from Big Sugar (which is going their separate ways after their tour this summer) but they have gone out on a high with a great CD and live album. The live disc (run) is a little better than their best of disc (run) but it is a must buy for all Big Sugar fans.

4 out of 5 stars Catchy tunes and quite a bit potential.......2004-07-07

On her debut CD, Rachel Farris' music reminded me somewhat of a teenage Nina Gordon. The first three songs -- You Think, I'm Not The Girl, and Soak -- are probably the best on the album. I'm Not The Girl, in particular, is imbued with a distinctive raw emotion and pathos. Soak, in contrast, has an infectiously upbeat, boucy quality to it. The remainder of the songs, while drifting into sappy-teenage-love-song territory, are still well performed tracks. Certainly one must give Farris credit for having written the music & lyrics for the entire album herself, something that definitely sets her apart from the majority of her contemporaries. This one is worth giving a listen. Farris shows a lot of potential. Hopefully we will be hearing from her again in a couple of years.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best CD I've ever bought!.......2004-06-15

Rachel Farris is a truly talented artist.
Not only a wonderful singer, but also a wonderful songwriter.
She wrote all of her songs! Nobody does that anymore. AND she co-produced her album!

It rocks. Seriously. If you think Avril rocks, Avril's album can't hold a candle to Rachel's. Every song is good and there's variety. Her music is so fun to listen to and her lyrics are very deep. I've laughed and cried listening to this album.

I want to help spread the word about this album, because it's honestly that good! I believe many of these songs could be pop-rock classics if more people knew about Rachel.

1 out of 5 stars damn, not another teenie bopper!.......2004-05-10

rachel farris's debut album soak is eaisly the worst album of the year. much like hilary duff, rachel uses "heavy metal" gitars and instramentals in a attempt to be edgy.
and again like hilary duff her bublegum pop voice confuses the sound. her lyrics go no where when she is "deep" and when her innuendos and abscrities rest the songs are pointless.
i am not going to further furnish your imaganation with my opinion, i will however save you the trouble
DO NOT BY THE ALBUM OR SUPPORT RACHEL FARRIS IN ANYWAY
if you as a listener have any integrity.

5 out of 5 stars The best female disc in years.......2004-04-11

This is hands down the best female disc I have found in years. She has a great voice, maybe a little young sounding for the harder songs, but still great. The lyrics aren't the best ever, but they aren't bad either. It's obvious when listening to her singing that they mean something to her, she sings with real feeling for the songs. She wrote all words and music, which always makes the disc better to me, they know exactly what they were feeling when writing the songs and so know how the songs should feel when recorded. The disc is not like the rest of the female music that has been flooding the market lately, way overproduced bubblegum music. The production on this is excellent, she herself taking part in it, and the songs actually rock. A good mix of rockers and slower songs, every song on the disc is good. Can't understand why the truly good discs go unnoticed while the lousy ones sell huge, this should have sold millions. Sure glad I stumbled across this while trying to find some new music one day, a must have CD. If you want something different from what else is out there, this is it. Different is good in this case. Hopefully we will hear much more from her in the future. I've heard people saying she was dropped by her label but according to Rachel herself as of March 15 she is still happily with Big 3 Records and writing songs for a new CD. Let's hope we hear from her again soon.

5 out of 5 stars WORTH EVERY PENNY!.......2003-11-27

This cd is worth every penny. She has a good voice and its even more impresive that EVERY song on the cd is writen by her.
the top 3 songs on this cd are:
      1) Its all you
      2) Wild
      3) I guess this is love
