Big Wheel
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
For their third album, these Nashville boys expand their boogie-blues/rock roots. "Julie's Song" playfully sports a poppy Beatlesque touch, while "Dragon Park" hints at jazz. But no matter where these guys stretch their wings creatively, they always return home to the South. Take "Groove Me," for example, where pummeling, almost heavy metal rhythm head-butts with smooth '60s soul. Or the ballad "It Ain't Nothin'," which is pure class with a country twang. Singer Mike Farris may put his trust in the Lord, as evidenced by the introspective "Standing in the Sun," but he also proudly struts his stuff on "Boogie King" and investigates the dark side on the tortured "More Than I Can Take." Big Wheel has many facets, all of them fascinating. --Janiss Garza

Incredible Band Incredible Album.......2005-12-09
I saw this band (in Tucson) open for Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top. I have been a LONGTIME Skynyrd and ZZ Top fan, HOWEVER the Screaming Cheetah Wheelies OWNED the stage. Funky, rocking, emotional, impossible to sit still is how I would describe the band. This album, is their best and has something for everyone...emotional, well-written songs that MOVE, and some of the most beautiful guitar playing EVER. Enjoy.
screamin cheetah wheelies-Big wheel.......2005-09-12
wonderfull, wonderfull record. One of the best record of the 90's. Perfect production and sound, beautifull lyrics.Swamp-boggie rock and roll style. If tou never listen this record, please take a few minutes to enjoy it.
Who the heck are the SCW?????.......2005-03-29
Newcomers listen up! These guys are great. If you do not own any of SCW cd's..start with this one and work your way back. If you have been directed to this site due to recommended listening lists or whatever, roll your dice and gamble on this last CD. I did and went back and bought all the others.
SCW remind me a bit of Black Crowes, but more influenced by R&B than the straight forward rock of the BC. SCW tend to break into jams throughout thier songs, hence the not-so-friendly radio format, and lack of airplay. But that is the listening publics loss....at least you can make up your own mind on CD purchases. These guys are great. If anyone out there gets this cd, and listens to "grace", and does not agree that this one song alone is worth the purchase price...email me. And there is so much more here, great rockin tunes and jams. Do you here the Van Morrison references??? Get it and enjoy.
MAYBE THE BEST BAND I'VE EVER HEARD.......2003-05-20
i have all three albums and i must say i'm surprised i haven't worn them out yet. they are hands down the best band i've ever seen live.. including a 4-hour two-set jam in nyc. i just wish get back together and record another album. Trust me, if you get any of their stuff you won't be disappointed.
Pure Entertainment !.......2001-02-18
These guys never cease to amaze me. All three of thier albums are full of heart and talent. They give a whole spectrum of rockin' blues to listeners on this album. I was fortunate enough to see SCW live in Nashville on thier first two albums. These guys are the epitome of live entertainment. They put thier heart and souls into thier music, and it shows on this and the other two albums.

Keeps coming back.......2004-10-07
I first heard Piebald on a rollerblading video called apprehensions- during Mike Elias's section. The song was 'grace kelly w/wings' and I immediately had to have the cd with that song. So I had my local cd store order for me: 'Barely Legal/All Ages' and as you may or may not know, this only has the live version of 'Grace Kelly' which in my opinion was not nearly as good as the studio version. Well, having just dropped $20 on an album I decided I would check out what else they had to offer, and boy ws I amazed!!! The first disc 'Barely Legal' is freakin' awesome!
Anyway I liked them so much that I decided I would venture out and purchase some more of their work. The first cd I stumbled across was 'Venetian Blinds' which just so happened to have the studio version of 'Grace Kelly' on it. I was so excited to find that one song that I ended up neglecting the rest of the album until I had had enough of 'Grace Kelly.'
Well, after this I put it back on my shelf never bothering to listen to any other songs. Then out of nowhere- just the other day one of my new friends asked if I liked Piebald to which I replied 'oh yeah'. He played a few song he had just recorded off the internet that I had never heard before. This had me wondering if any of those songs came from 'Venetian Blinds' so I went home that night and popped in the cd. This cd rocks! None of the songs Jodi played were on this album but dissappointed I was not. I couldn't believe that I never bothered to listen to the rest of the album. I hate that amazon doesnt give a track listing because I would recommend a few songs to listen to, but some good numbers are 1,6,10,11,12,13. Those are just a few I have been playing lately. Don't get me wrong, the whole album rocks. Well in conclusion it seems like all of my favorite cds just keep coming back on me- I play a few favortes, put it on the shelf and then break it out a few weeks or even months later only to find that some other songs are my new favorites. This whole cd is now one of my favorites of all time. If you haven't heard it, try it and I guarauntee that you will like it. This cd has led me to the purchase of every other studio Piebald album.
The rest is no Grace Kelly With Wings.......2002-04-14
If you have heard Grace Kelly With Wings and liked it then buy this. These guys rock hard. But I must say I was taken back when I heard all the songs that came after Grace Kelly.... The rest is nothing I would call emo by even a long shot. That song has a lot of emotion, but the rest has more resemblence to something like Digger. It rocks, has funny lyrics, and has a great variety. But, if you're looking for more things along the lines of Grace Kelly... then beware, the rest is no Grace Kelly With Wings.
ROCK!.......2002-02-28
holy heck do these guys rock the house! their live shows are great. go see them. buy this album. enjoy the 80's breakdowns!!!!
PIEBALD.......2001-12-24
Piebald started out as a couple of upper middle class kids from Andover, Mass. playing punk rock. Sounds ridiculous, but the joke's on us. Piebald write songs like no other band. With all of its weird time signatures, strange lyrics, and songs that segue into an endless number of different parts, 'If it weren't for Venetian Blinds' is one of the most musically interesting emo albums out there. I got to see them live in Andover last night, and they put on a great show. After apparently taking a break from playing, it's good to see them together again. They played a bunch of new songs, and I'll be psyched when the new album comes out in February. Until then, pick this up and enjoy.
If It Weren't for Venetian Blinds... We'd all the dead.......2001-09-08
Incredible music. I think it's amazing how Piebald manages to be so unlike any other band yet still remain rocking out like no other. You'd think that by now all the Piebald wannabes would be out there trying to get a name by rocking Piebald-style but frankly no one out there has the ability these guys do. This for sure one of my top 5 favorite albums of all time. Buy it and you'll a new respect for Grace Kelly. Trust me.

Perfection........2006-04-28
Jejune-Def: Devoid, Empty.
The band and the wonderful music they create could not be any farther from the words actual meaning. 'This afternoon's malady' is the best of Jejune, period.
An ignored gem from the 90's.......2005-11-19
Jejune was a small blip on the radar during the 90's, likely a consequence of a small recording label and an unfortunate (and innacurate) "emo" label at a time when the genre was at the height of its repellance. While occasionally teetering the fine line between epic and heavy-handed emotion, Jejune are rare masters of male/female vocal interplay, and this interaction is one of the brilliant components of the sound. Had this album's lofty ambition been realized with a more refined recording and stronger label backing, it would have rivaled the great works of other, more successful artists of their ilk (My Bloody Valentine, et al).
So wonderful....i'm in love!.......2001-03-13
I cannot believe what an album this is. I always stumble on great bands long after they came out...I heard about this album about 3 years ago and back then I had no idea what it was about. Am I glad I got it. It starts out with beautiful emotion and it never lets down. I hate to call this emo but I can't think of much more...unless you just let it be and enjoy it without "genresizing." I suggest you do not listen to this after a breakup or when you're depressed because it is extremely sad, but in a beautiful way. Music that is bittersweet...but done so wonderfully that the sadness wraps around you like a blanket and envelops you in a cloak of emotion. Arabella's backing vocals and lead vocals on some tracks add even more to the album, as her voice is chillingly exsquisite. Listen to "Fixed on the One" and try to keep the tears from welling up. I've never heard such emotion in an album, ever. Get it. Get it now.
Beautiful.......2000-12-05
Jejune is a band like no other, and it was really sad to see them break up. This is probably the best full-length CD of their carrer; the only albums of theirs better than This Afternoons Malady are some of their 7" records... Tracks 1 and 4 are the tracks that I tend to associate with this album. If only Araby sang more on this record it'd be perfect. She's got a really sweet voice. But other than that it's a great record. I wouldn't call it emo... but then people who deny that "emo" exists are even worse than the people who use the term "emo"... so I'll just call it post-hardcore. Great record. Buy it.
Emo or Not Emo.......2000-02-14
Many people make a lot of how to classify types of music. Jejune is a band that is often classified as an Emo band; however, their music is not just emo. It is a blend of powerful harmony and great lyrics. It is the kind of music that makes you stop what your doing and just listen. I encourage anyone to just listen to one song, and you'll be hooked. Their music can send you through a range of emotions in just one album

They still loved us.......2005-04-27
Thank heavens. A collection of songs not released on a full-length, they released this one to keep the fans alive during the purgatory between "Clarity" and "Bleed American." Tom's first two songs, "Opener" and "77 Satellites," come from one of the first 7" records they ever released, and they're two of my favorites on this cd. I love Tom's voice, and "Opener," especially, is a quintessential Tom track, with great guitar parts throughout as well. The third track, "What I Would Say to You Now," is absolutely my favorite on the cd, as it's also one of my all-time favorite Jimmy Eat World songs. Jim's vocals are raw and sincere, the drums are perfect, and the guitar part is great, particularly in the verse. "H Model" has both guys singing lead parts, the vocals aren't dead on-key the whole time, but it still comes together great with the harmonies, and it definitely has the spirit. "Ramina" is a good instrumental. I absolutely love it... it sounds like it could easily fit somewhere on "Clarity." "Christmas Card" is a fun Jim-lead tune, with one of the little guitar riffs having a "For Me, This is Heaven" feel to it, but "Christmas Card" is definitely its own song. "Carbon Scoring" is another short tune, with a hint of fast punk rock in it. The closing song, "Digits," seems to be a fan favorite. It has a cool, long intro, and there's no way you'll be able to fall asleep to this cd, as the opening lyrics "Pay attention!" will certainly catch you off guard if you're nearing a slumber. They released a longer version of this song on "Static Prevails." All in all, it's a really nice cd to have if you're more than a surface Jimmy Eat World fan. I still pop it in my player quite often, so I've found it to be worth every penny.
brilliance on disc.......2004-10-03
first off, boston based? the editorial review is way off. jimmy eat world hails from tempe, az. secondly, in no way was this recorded at shows or whatnot. these are demos and singles from 7" records and other out of print rarities.
with that out of the way, let me say that this is one of the best jimmy eat world records, which dosent say much, seeing as the only one i dont recommend to everyone is bleed american, which is still a pretty decent disc. this album, however, showcases much of the subtlety and intelligence that these guys can cram into their sounds, and also shows you a bit of what they used to sound like when they were pretty hugely punk and punk alone. recommended tracks include what would i say to you now, opener, spangle, untitled (which the track listing dosent list for some odd reason,) ramina, and h model.
you wont be disappointed. unless you like bad music.
Die hards only.......2004-07-29
This review is going to cover two aspects of the CD: production and musical content.
1) Production: This CD was mostly recorded during shows, resulting in a sound that is very raw at times. While it was a brilliant move to save money wasted on studio time people may feel betrayed at the loss of quality. It's a really decent recording regardless. 3 stars.
2) Music: I love the music on this CD. You get the full spectrum. Styles range from mellow sleepers to the all out rockers that you'd come to expect. As all other owners of this CD know, a special shout out goes to track three. 5 stars.
I'm going with the five star rating as I value the music much more. I love the variety. That's all. Buy it, you die hards.
I was expecting more........2003-10-15
Ahh, Jimmy Eat World's single collection album is good, but I was expecting more. I thought it'd be as good their other albums. This isn't as good as "Static Prevails", "Clarity", or even "Bleed America". It's just old stuff, out of print singles, and b-sides. This by all means isn't bad at all. I had too high of expectations and I'm just a moron. The first two songs are really good and sound like something off of "Static Prevails", Tom sings these songs. The next two are also great. "What...." is a really good indie tune, and "Speed Read" will put you to sleep with its quiet music and sincere vocals. "Spangle" is a decent song that is a break up song, but runs a bit too long. "H Model" is a nice break from all the slow songs before, it's a catchy rocking tune. "Ramina" is an instrumental, that gets repetitive after two minutes, but it's good. "Christmas Card" is a nice song, which sounds like something around "Static Prevails". "Untitled" is another instrumental, I just can't get into the instrumentals. "Carbon Scoring" is funny to hear after all the slow songs, it's fast and punk rawk. The last song is an early version of "Digits" from "Static", it's shorter and is a bit faster.
This should probably get a four, but the instrumentals and my high expectations pull it down. If you don't have all the J.E.W.albums buy them first, the other three are all really good. If your thrist for J.E.W. continues or you have one now(after owning their other records), buy this.
Static Prevails the sequel.......2003-07-27
Could Jimmy Eat World not stay consistant from one album to another even once?
In all 3 of their major label releases they sport an entirely new sound. With most bands I'd be upset by something like this but with jimmy eat world each sound is amazing. If your in a certain mood you basically have three different albums to pick from. Who needs to buy a cd from any other band.
For those of you who just couldn't get enough of their first big release, Static Prevails ,this album is for you. The good majority of these songs are all before they got signed to a big record company and are raw and sometimes not in the best quality.
It's easy to see how some of these songs didn't make an album cut but overall I fairly enjoyed the album.
It starts off with the song appropriatly titled "Opener" It's nearly 6 minutes long but it will get your blood pumping. The album begins to get repitative in place. "H Model" and "Carbon Scoring" are two songs that mix things up, and even seem out of places, not really songs you'd expect to here from these guys.
"Ramina" is as cool as a rock instrumental song will get, and "Spangle" is probably the only song on here that could of fit on both Static Prevails or Clarity, but in being able to do that it landed itself on neither. The album ends with the original version of "Digits" it was later altered and rerecorded for Static Prevails.
I fairly enjoyed this album but there is one reason i really decided to get it in the first place. "What I Would Say to You Now" those words alone sum it up. One of the best songs Jimmy Eat World has ever written. You can't call youself a true jimmy fan until you hear this song. It may not be in the best quality, and you may not be able to make out the words until a few listens but once you do you'll be hooked.
Do I recommend this album? Not really, unless you're a big Jimmy Eat World fan or you've got deep pockets. But I don't think this band has ever done anything wrong and I've never met a jimmy song I didn't like.

totally travis as some of you may know is the acoustic side of Travis from the wonderful band piebald! This album is great! It's more of low quality recording but the songs are wonderful! It's really just a guy writing songs and having fun in basements and at home! The songs are very catch and fun to listen to! There's even a version of the song the stalker before it was ever a piebald song! This album is great it really is and I highly recomend buying it!

Nathan Larson's Genious.......2003-12-30
Ignore that review before mine the individual obviously has too much time on his hands, Nathan's work is innovative to the musician and strait foreward for the passive (or passionate) listener. five stars hands down
great soulful guitar-pop form unexpected direction.......2002-05-31
this is great. although i'm a big fan of the cubist-glam of shudder to think's 'pony express record', i can still appreciate what NL is doing here - a kind of soulful guitar-pop that no-one else is doing these days it seems. if you heard and loved STT's '50,000 bc', then this is similar to 'all eyes are different',or if heard 'i want someone badly' (from 'first love, last rites ';which was apparently the last recorded song performed by Jeff Buckley (written by NL)), you'll like this. lots.
Divorce yourself from your Expectations.......2001-07-26
If I would have written this review upon my first listen, it would've have come out much like most of the negative reviews that have been popping up around Nate's latest work. After giving Nate's new stuff some space to breathe, I'm addicted. Well-crafted and straight from the heart. What more can someone ask?

First 10 and last 3 have very few good parts........2006-02-20
I would just like to say that the first disc is not even worth wasting your time with. I am one of the biggest JEW fans you will ever find and this is the worst cd by far that they have ever come out with. The best song on the first disc is when they are not singing. If you enjoy JEW and their soft and melodic ways then this is not your cd. While listining I was wondering if this was even the same band that produced the two greatest cd's I've ever heard (Clarity & Bleed American). The cd pretty much consist of someone who you can't understand screaming and bad guitars. I am writing this to warn people that the first disc is awful and don't even waste your time. Now the second disc is slightly different. The first two songs are spectacular and that is the only reason they got 2 stars. The third song is just a badly-done version of one of my all-time favorite songs "Cautioners." If you really want to hear this disc just search "Jebediah" on amazon and look for JEW and Jebediah and you can buy this disc seperate from the other one. Jebediah is an awful band and doesn't even deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as JEW. So all you die hard JEW fans like me. Stay as far away from this cd as possible and put on Clarity because you may never hear anything that good from Jimmy Eat World ever again.
