TVOTR is a highly original group from Brooklyn, NY characterized by vocals that range from crazily high-pitched to group chanting and a pop-based sound that's rampantly experimental but always melodic. Unlike their school-of-'78-in-'04 peers such as the Rapture and Interpol, TVOTR's music is as rooted in blues, free jazz and gospel as it is the post-punk canon or contemporary electronic music. This makes Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes far more interesting, naturally; the purely vocal "Ambulance" is novel and exciting as anything by Björk, Spongehead Experience or Pere Ubu. With lyrics that impressively, and un-preachingly, tackle issues of race and war, this finalist for 2004's Shortlist Competition easily ranks among the best albums of that year. --Mike McGonigal
Album Description
Pop, rock, and art songs about discordant living, misrepresentation, life, afterlife, love, and love "after hours". Scandalous. Undeniably catchy songs with incredible production, arrangements, champion crooning, and a host of extras. "They sound like Pere Ubu meets Belfegore meets The Tar Babies meets a way less chilly Notwist with a smidge of Metric thrown in"--Jane.
Customer Reviews:
Oh! the album this could've been.......2007-02-03
First off, let me say how much I appreciate the ingenuity in this album. The Wrong Way is almost flawless. An announcing horn section leads you through the intro to this album. It's the only song on the album to which I would give the vaunted five stars. Staring at the Sun is the next song and the first song which displays the problems with this album as I see it. The beats don't go anywhere as adventurous as the introductions. In each song there is such an intriguing introduction. We enter into a new world, such as the one Alice in Wonderland was introduced by the rabbit. When we first enter these songs, the possibilities seem endless. Where will they take us? What horizons are approached by these intriguing artists who have presented us with something so new, so different. Unfortunately, we learn as we progress through the caverns that the highlights are all in the intros. This was all corrected, in my opinion, in The Return to Cookie Mountain. That may be the less flawed album. I listened to this album many times, trying to understand the abundant critical praise. I never understood it. Did these guys show promise...Heck yeah, but they weren't there yet, as Cookie Mountain proved. This isn't the album with which to start your TV on the Radio collection. Many people loathe reviewers like me who will only provide one star or five, but I don't normally feel inspired to write an review for the two to four album or book. This album is the could've been, should've been that Cookie Mountain was. It was upon hearing Cookie Mountain that I thought back on what was missing with this album. Maybe they should've added a more substantial bridge to the heart of the song that took us away from the workings of the song, then brought us back. Maybe this is why, other than the classic single The Wrong Way, I never made it past two to three minutes on any of the other songs. Cookie Mountain is the real deal though, and it has earned the praise the critics gave it, and it has earned repeated plays in all of my music devices.
as a sophomore release, it's damn good.......2006-12-22
it's very rare that any band as celebrated as this one survives their own press to make a truly great 2nd album. TV on the Radio has a fascinating arc ahead of them, since they don't fit into any real genre. they're not indie rock, they're not emo, and they're only vaguely post-punk. but they swoop through experimental fun in a manner that's reminiscent of Bowie, synthesizing genres until you're not sure what you're listening to. for me, that's part of the fun: trying to get into each song with no judgements about the genre it's supposed to evoke. however, my genre preferences show through in which tracks i enjoy - unlike the other reviewers, King Eternal grabbed me instantly because i love rhythmic and repetitive noise music and have some roots in the goth aesthetic, whereas Dreams was simply a 'eh, it's definitely got a distinct hipster vibe.' Wear You Out delighted me because it instantly reminded me of Gang of Four, though i couldn't quite explain why, but Ambulance evoked merely an 'interesting...' from me. i do enjoy the trip through it, though, and while i only find King Eternal something i'd listen to over and over on its own, the album shows a lot of thought and evolution, which i find impressive for a 2nd release, and which makes me happy to listen through it as a whole.
if you decide to purchase this release, don't go into it thinking that you're going to get a rapid-rockin' type of thing. go into it knowing that this is a pastiche of influences for a band trying to live up to its own hype.
Lack the skills to pay the bills........2006-12-14
OK, I get it, they're not SUPPOSED to be a straight up rock 'n roll band and as such I should probably ignore the fact that they rock about as hard as...oh, I don't know...Coldplay. Fine. That's forgiven.
But the rock is not the only thing that's missing from these lads. Try as hard as you may and if you can find one shred of genuine fire and passion in the music you've either looked a lot harder than I have or you have a lower set of expectations. I'll bet every last dollar in my pocket that the latter is the case. None of these songs ever get to the boiling point. Sometimes they simmer but most of the times they're the equivalent of watching a potato cook.
I can (barely) hear some interesting influences (I bet they like Fela Kuti, Sly and The Family Stone, The Gang Of Four, Suicide and maybe Spoon) but these boys lack the skills to touch any of these people (except Britt Daniels that is).
The clumsy guitar diddling, the morose drumming and the uninspiring compositions leave me cold. You may find yourself wishing they would've done more with the horn section on "The Wrong Way". Wishing they would have have abandoned the pretentious ululating on "Ambulance" and "Poppy". Wishing the noises were more interesting on "Wear You Out". Wishing they had more skill. Wishing you'd spent your money on something more inspiring (like James Brown, for example).
As it is, they're a second rate band in a second rate music scene.
Unique........2006-10-11
Well, being an all-black indie rock band, TV on the Radio are already pretty unique in the genre. However, it doesn't stop there. These guys have a really cool, interesting, original sound. Take the Pixies, and throw in elements of soul, techno, 50s doo-wop, and many other things, and you have some idea.
Plenty of surprises and diversity from track to track, from the Motown-ish "The Wrong Way", to the dark, fuzzy distortion of "Staring at the Sun", to the all-acapella "Ambulance", to the insanely eclectic "Poppy". Not a bad song, and never a dull moment.
Highly recommended to fans of indie rock. The purists (and they're out there) might not care for this, but if you want something out of the ordinary, definitely check this out.
(Also, this band has a really cool doo-wop cover of the Pixies' "Mr. Grieves". But it's not on here.)
Growing better, but the band still manages to dissapoint........2006-07-10
I will preface this review by saying that in a fair world I would give this record 2.5 or 3 stars.
Unfortunately, since I reserve a bit of knee-jerk, arrogant spite for over-hyped bands, I have to knock them down to a solid 2 stars for this release. Sorry guys.
Although TVoTR has improved slightly in craft since the Young Liars EP, they still leave much to be desired. Actually, it appears that they've made a career out of leaving much to be desired.
This band specializes in leading listeners on a drawn-out journey to nowhere. Although nowhere is only about four or five minutes down the road, it seems to take forever.
Some people dig that vibe. I don't. The band seems to be more intereted in ideas and aesthetics than making truly great music. It is only fair to mention that this is what fans of the band seem to like most about them.
David Sitek, the TV on the Radio's in-house producer seems to have a history of working with bands that priorotize fashion (or, to be nice, 'aesthetics') over music. The Yeah Yeah Yeah's are a good example. Unlike Yeah Yeah Yeah's however, TV on The Radio's personality is definitely its own.
TV On The Radio is like a melancholy version of a bad Saturday Night Live sketch. Every song on this record feels as if it's based on one half-baked, half-decent idea, repeated ad-nauseum.
If the guys down the hall from your old college dorm made music like this, you might be right for supporting them and singing their praises. Unfortunately, the band isn't a bunch of college kids attempting their first DIY project, and we are right to expect more from them. Especially when they're no more interesting, only more slick than your average sampler-toting avant-pop 20 year-olds.
They purposefully build tension with no release, and manage to do so in a rather uncompelling and uninteresting fashion. While listening to this record, some listeners may find themselves expecting any one of the songs to finally "go somewhere". This is a bad idea, as they're not big on 'pay-off'.
They are much more interested in monotonous redundancy. Some people will love that, but be warned if that's not your thing. Trust-fund urbanites, pretentious scenesters, heroin addicts, and stoners may find a lot to like on this record.
The rest of us will have to wait as the band marginly improves and, with any luck, lets go of their impulse to purposefully avoid being any good. Either that, or we can avoid listening to them, and find some other critics's darling to fawn over for now.
(Disclaimer: A few sentences that are stll appropriate here are borrowed from an earlier review that I wrote about the Young Liars EP.)

Don't let the low price fool you!.......2006-03-02
I have a very large CD collection because I have never let low prices scare me from a purchase. Yes, I have bought some dogs but I have bought just as many full-priced dogs as the super budget kind. Many of my favorite CDs cost a one dollar or even less. This CD comes from Sony. The line is known as Infinity and almost all of the performances come from Russia or Georgia (the European Georgia, not ours). This particular CD has some rarely played Strauss waltzes plus the more famous ones such as the Blue Danube. The performances are excellent in every way. There is plenty of warmth and great playing and most importantly, plenty of energy. The rarely played waltzes make this bargain a must for any serious Strauss lover.
Good Collection Bad Performances and Recordings.......2000-06-22
This is a good collection of various pieces of music written by the genius who was Johann Strauss. However as is the case with so many classical collections this CD has terrible recordings and bad performances. Then again I guess you get what you pay for, seeing as how this CD was 4.27 when I published this review, I guess in a way that makes this CD an okay deal since it does give you a good taste of what Strauss' style was like. Personally, if I hadn't been given this CD I'm not sure I would have bought it.

Customer Reviews:
A Huge Disappointment.......2005-09-17
As a huge Hellbillys fan I could not wait to get this album, but when I finally got it and popped it into my cd I was severely let down. This cd didn't sound like the Hellbillys I used to know and love. Most of the songs are forgettable and run together. The bass sound is awful, most of the time you can't even tell they are using a stand-up bass. Two of the slower numbers, "Prowl" and "Blood Lust" have the best bass sound and are two of the better tracks. As usual the Hellbillys try their hand at some cover songs, which range from generic, Samhain's "All Murder, All Guts, All Fun" to laughable, Elvis's "Tiger Man". "Insane", the best song on the album, also appers on their debut album, "Land Of Demons", and pales in comparison to the original recording. This album also includes a live performance from KZSU radio. The sound is pretty good, but again the bass sound is terrible. They attempt to do some older Hellbillys songs but they turn out lack luster at best. Once again this album was a huge disappointment and is nowhere near the greatness of their other albums. Don't waste your time and money on this, buy "Cavalcade Of Perversions", "Torture Garden", or, if you can find it, "Land Of Demons" instead. After hearing this, to me The Hellbillys are dead. R.I.P. Hellbillys.
