Not much to add to the previous reviews. This record combines the pensive, impressionistic Garbarek and the passionate free blower. The band is snare drum tight, fluid and really inspired.

Listen to the final track and its climax - "The Picture" dramatically synthesizes the elements depicted musically in previous pieces - it builds, kicks into another gear and leaves one breathless in the last moments.

This was an interesting and different premise for an album, and only Jan Garbarek could've pulled this off with such flair. Taking a perfectly ordinary yet very stark photo, Garbarek wrote several pieces based on components of the photo that will hold your attention quite easily. He also deserves extra kudos for putting together an ace band to pull it off, and ESPECIALLY for getting Bill Connors to play electric guitar again (his playing here has a very mercurial and silvery texture to it that fits the music perfectly!)!

Put this on and let it transport you to another world!

Beside bringing together a wonderfully sympathetic and sonorous ensemble (noted in an earlier review), this rec. has the intriguing device whereby each composition is inspired by an element in the cover photo... doubly interesting since it's a pretty ordinary photo of a house! The degree to which Garbarek succeeds in capturing something of those various elements is, frankly, astonishing (take "Wires" if you need proof). "Red Roof" I've always heard as evoking a Spanish, matador-like flavor. I'm aware of no other album built on this premise, and the overall result is highly coherent and musical, particularly if you are an ECM appreciator. I'm not the greatest Garbarek fan, due to his tendency to not blending in a musical setting. But I've listened to perhaps 6 or 8 of his works, and this is one of the two best. (the other is "Red Lanta)

I remember first hearing the song "White Cloud" from this album on the radio when I was in sophomore year in college, one evening at work making pizzas in a pizzeria. I was so moved by it that I could not work while it was playing and I was forced to focus deeply on the music! I tuned everyone and everything, including the hustle and bustle of the pizza shop, completely out!

This group was exceptional and spoke a common language improvisationally. The interplay between Jan Garbarek (Saxes), John Taylor (Piano), Eberhard Weber (Bass), Bill Connors (Guitar) and Jon Christensen (Drums) is fluid. Solos pick up, blend and compliment one another beautifully!! Jan's biting authoritative tone and style is complimented excellently with Eberhard's deep, subtle, grounded bass support with an uncanny use of space and silence to evoke extra feeling. In fact space is well understood by this entire group and it shows. This for me is the best work I have heard from Bill. Jon Christensen and John Taylor are so well matched for this project that I cannot imagine anyone else blending as well as they did in this group. All compositions are by Jan. They are great!

I highly recommend this CD to anyone looking to hear beautiful improvised music from a group that is "locked" in the same groove.

Of all Garbarek CDs available via AMAZON this one stands apart because of presence of two excellent musicians you won't often find in Garbarek's groups - pianist John Taylor and guitarist Bill Connors. A very good album.

It's been a long time since a vibraphonist made anything like a splash in jazz. But Stefon Harris is going to change all that. He initially drew acclaim as a member of tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson's touring unit, and then provided unexpected depth to Charlie Hunter's group, Pound for Pound. Harris's own debut is marked by slack time signatures that thinly veil Cuban rhythmic underpinnings, clearing lots of space for his own warm solos. Harris likes to emphasize particular ranges on the vibes, hanging in the low end for a rolling few bars before taking off with his mallets, moving them fast enough to create a bumpy blur. Pianist Mulgrew Miller makes a fine showing with Harris's tunes, often staking out a more harmonically exploratory realm. Harris digs subtlety as well, reaching back to Milt Jackson's bag for some of his shadings and nuances. This is a promising, strong session. --Andrew Bartlett

I saw Stefon Harris play at the Village Vanguard with Wessell "Warmdaddy" Anderson. I will never forget that night as I love listening to Warmdaddy swing -- but Stefon swung like no other that night -- he really blew me away...I was shocked at the guys technical brillance combined with his ability to musically convey the essence of his thoughts and emotion. His perfomance was both raw and refined. When I heard this album, I must say I was a bit dissapointed, but it does display his abundant and diverse talents.

    The man's name is Ron Goodwin for heaven's sake (not Roy). He is one of the most popular light classical (some would say very light) composers of the 20th century. Earnslaw is the one I was looking for, just fantastic. The rest is OK, in fact mostly better than that, but not very demanding.
