If you don't own this album - you need to. The musicianship is on par with the jazz masters - this is bound to become a historic album. Kurt Elling is the new jazz legend we have been looking for and his musical legacy will live on just like John Coltrane and Miles Davis. The proof is in the listening - buy this album!

Kurt Elling and Laurence Hobgood are in some ways like Hal David and Burt Bachrach with a few exceptions: Kurt sings infinitely better than either Hal or Burt and Laurence plays and arranges better than Burt. But boy, do they collaborate beautifully! The best song on the album: maybe "Foolish Heart". With Raynor, Onderdonk, Brad Wheeler, Eddie Johnson and Johnny Frigo,(Kids: he's 87 but sounds like 27!)folks should buy this for the great Chicago jazz musicians who have helped in advancing Kurt's great career. Really a great album but not Kurt's best effort(MITA) is the finest vocalist albulm of 2003, YES it is!

Kurt Elling is genius. He has a very classy but innovative style that will give you no choice but to play this album over and over. His originals are stunning and his versions of the jazz standards he has selected for this collection are creative without being over the top. I have owned this CD for two years now and it is still in high rotation in my collection. No matter what mood you're in, this album will suit it.

The Best Young Male Jazz Singer? Ex. "A" is Here.......2004-01-25

Many believe that Kurt Elling is the best male jazz singer under the age of 40 in the business. For those who would so argue, this album should be "Exhibit A" in support of their argument. Listen to how he wails on "Effendi"--he really shows his chops here. Elling is best known for his ability to improvise and bend lyrics as well as melody, and the third and fourth cuts on the album ("Smoochie" and "Jen's Yen") highlight that. Being the old "romantic softy" at heart that I am, though, my favorite on this set is the "harmonized dub" of "The Best Things Happen While You're Dancin'." One quibble: Kurt Elling sings his r's (like "moth-errrrrrrrrr") so hard that it's jarring. It's like the intentionally dissonant notes that Monk used to throw into his solos. But that's really a quibble. Highly recommended.

Simply Outstanding........2003-07-31

For one to say that Elling is the Sinatra of our time is in my oppinion, an understatement. He posesses a great un-matched skill to break the boundaries of conventional jazz and let the beautiful and melodic tones of his superior skatting lead it's listeners through a totally different world. It's easy to put on this cd and get lost in what seems like a totally new dimension of jazz that went unexplored for years. It's wonderful and inspiring to hear the sound of his vocal genius and to know that jazz is still alive and thriving. A definite must-have for those who truly appreciate vocal jazz, or any jazz for that matter.

Our Kind of Soul, the follow-up to 2003's VH1-propelled Do It for Love, is mostly a can't-miss proposition: Daryl Hall's smooth, expressive voice, synonymous with the Philly soul sound, is so well suited to this material that it feels shrink-wrapped overtop. "Can't Get Enough of Your Love," the Barry White classic, is given a breezy makeover (and, maybe more impressively considering that most artists wouldn't touch it, not mangled); Teddy Pendergrass' "Love TKO" is dusted off and tinkered with till it takes on a signature H&O sound; and "After the Dance," one of Marvin Gaye's most cryptic compositions, comes across like a solved mystery--there's a gentleness and a reverie in the reading will prompt thoughtful listeners to return to it more than a few times. That said, a couple of these covers--the O'Jays "Used to Be My Girl" and Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady"--seem cursory, and the duo can count on a cranky contingent decrying their lack of fresh material. But the strength of three songs introduced here should keep them at bay. First track "Let Love Take Control" gutsily and convincingly glides into Four Tops' "Standing in the Shadows of Love," "Soul Violins" strikes notes at once heartfelt and spontaneous, and "Don't Turn Your Back" has the classic Hall & Oates marks of their-kind-of-soul songs like "Out of Touch." --Tammy La Gorce

Gettin Back to the Basics.......2007-05-26

This is their best work in a long time. They recorded a lot of classic soul songs. What makes this collection so unique is they recorded them close to how the songs were originally written. They use acoustic guitars and violins. Of course they put the classic H&O style. In many cases their version is better than the original.

There are a couple of new songs on the CD also. I like those also. I notice the boys are getting back to their roots the older they get. I would give this CD a 10 out of 10. With the best song being Soul Violins. If you like soul music this is a must for your collection.

The more I listen to this CD the more I like it! There is nothing better than sweet soul music done with acoustic instruments. I started reading the cover and found the CD was recorded in 5 weeks at Daryl's home in the Bahamas!

The background vocals are amazing. I just love the way they harmonize with each other. Daryl still has his pipes and can still hit those really high notes. He does a great rendition of the Al Green classic "Still in Love".

I heard an interview with John Oates one time were he said "he brings a certain shortness to the group". I think he is selling himself short! (Ha I made a pun) His rendition of "Ooh Child" is remarkable. It's like the song was written for him.

I noticed that on many of the songs some of the lyrics and the key were changed. At first I had a problem with this, because I am used to hearing the songs done a certain way. I get it now! They took these classic R&B songs and made them Hall & Oates songs. This was done intentionally and I have to say it works.

When I heard #3 played on the radio, I looked everywhere for the CD. I recognized D.Hall's voice right away. This is MUSIC,timeless, ageless talent and style. Thank you AMAZON.com and Thanks to Hall and Oates.

Daryl Still knows what Soul is all about. .......2007-04-25

Hall and Oats were one of the only Blue Eye Soul groups I believed understood what soul is about. Over the years I haven't heard much from them. I just happen to catch the concert on tv, it looked like it was at some big bar in the suburbs at first. But I understand it was in the Bahama's.
I was very delighted to hear that Daryl Hall still can sing. The songs were not songs from their music but covers of various R&B songs from people such as Gladys Knght and the O'Jays and the Four Tops. and one or two newer original songs. Whoever said their version of the O'Jays, She Use to Be My Girl was the worst song he ever heard must not of listened to any of the 10,000 cd's he has. It was fine, I get nervous when people sing covers of great R&B songs. Most do it pretty horrendously. Not Daryl Hall even 34 years later the man can still sing and he does a very good job singing that song. Surprisingly he took on sacred cows like Neither One of Us, by Gladys Knight and he was excellent. He did not try to over sing Gladys, he made the song his own. He sang Rock Steady like he has been singing it all of his life.
Same with Marvin Gaye's song.
Again I will say Hall and Oates were the only Blue Eye Soul group particulary Daryl Hall who knows what soul is about and that is why they were able to tackle songs most singers would sound foolish singing. This CD proves it.

'Used ta be my girl' gets my vote for worst song of all time!.......2007-03-13

I consider myself a music expert or something close to it. I own close to 10,000 albums. I say this because I hope that you will listen to some very good advice. Do not buy this album. Do not borrow it from the library. If you see it in the record store, look away as fast as you can. 'She used to be my girl' is the WORST song I have ever heard. That is taking into consideration all of the generic bubblegum pop, 80's hair metal, disco, and rock blands that I have had the misfortune to hear. To describe it as infinitely dreadful would be giving it too much credit. 'The O'Jays' should be ashamed and embarrassed that they are responsible for this miserable catastrophe of a 'song.' Daryl Hall & John Oates simply take 'worst' to a whole new low. Absolutely horrible! Hearing this song is like being forced to eat cow dung while suspended by your toe nails above a steaming pit of molten lead. Please, do not buy this album! (Rating: No stars whatsoever!)

ALways loved this group....own several of their CD's and this is by far my favorite. Darryl Hall's phrasing of his songs are superb.

Soundtracks are a mixed bag at best. Some are little more than an assortment of pieces, but others hang together effectively on their own, like this one. The idea of Chinese music--both popular and operatic--juxtaposed with the sounds of Nat King Cole performing Latin music might seem bizarre, but it works beautifully, sustaining a lush, romantic mood created both by the strings and the '40s Chinese music, itself a tinkling Hollywood pastiche. But as atmospheric as all this is, one track stands out above the others: "Blue," actually a version of the classic "St. James' Infirmary," takes on another dimension in Chinese hands. While familiar but completely alien at the same time, the slithering Asian sonorities mesh perfectly with the African-American form to create something evocative but with a sadness that goes beyond blues. The movie is of a time and place; the soundtrack is of a mood and yearning. Listen at night, with someone you love close by. --Chris Nickson

The soundtrack is really good; I didn't like some of the songs (the Chinese ones) but there are only 3 in the whole CD. The instrumental music is awesome making the soundtrack an average good.

The Bing Crosby songs are very good but...........2006-07-17

In my opinion it`s the Bing Crosby-songs that makes this album worth buying, but these songs can be bought on compilations. The rest of the music is for people with special interest for backgroundmusic in films.

Film soundtracks are often disappointing---there are songs from the movie that are not on the CD, songs on the CD that were not in the film, different versions of songs on the CD than in the film, etc.

Happily, this soundtrack is absolutely faithful to the film, and it is masterfully interwoven with dialogue excerpts from the film which complement and build on the music instead of being obtrusive. I don't understand a word of Chinese but still enjoyed listening to the actors' voices, and also liked the bits of traditional Chinese music as well. There are some tracks that I don't remember from the film but they are not throw-away filler in any way, just beautiful extras in the same vein.

Excellent reissue of Love's hard-to-find final studio chapters, plus extras!.......2007-06-30

At long last, Hip-o Select has reissued Love's last two studio albums, recorded with Blue Thumb, along with an album's worth of unreleased live tracks from three different 1970 concert dates. The set is 3 discs, disc one being the double album Out Here (68 min.), disc two is False Start (29 minutes) and three is titled Live in England 1970 (56 min.). These final two albums were released by a band whose members were constantly changing (with leader, singer and songwriter Arthur Lee as the only constant), and also a band that included no other members from the Love that recorded 1968's essential Forever Changes album. However, though he changed his band around and changed his sound considerably from orchestral folk-rock to a harder brand of psychedelic rock, Lee by no means quit producing worthwhile material after Forever Changes. This reissue is a welcome one, since Out Here has been out of print for quite a while (and thus very expensive and rare to find), False Start has been somewhat hard to track down, and this is the first time the 1970 live album has been released. Although this was a hit-and-miss period for Lee and Love, there's tons of great, rocking tracks in this collection, lots of Lee's inimitably dead-on lyrics, and I think it's worth owning for any major Love fan (who is probably primarily interested in the previously unreleased live material) or anyone who's been bewitched by the classic Forever Changes and wants to dig deeper into Love's later music.

Out Here is unquestionably the strongest disc of the set. Since it resulted from the same sessions that produced the excellent Four Sail album, it's nearly as good. Really, its main flaw is one that has plagued most double albums--filler. There's a few songs that are merely OK, which suggests that perhaps Out Here would have been dynamite if it were trimmed down a bit. Despite the occasional down moments, it's full of some excellent highlights, like the update of "Signed D.C.," which is darker than the original and drenched in doomy emotion. "Discharged" is a horn-accompanied change of pace, highlighting the biting satire that was ever-present on Forever Changes. "Doggone" is great, full of references to the old Love lineup, but for some reason it has an 8-minute long drum solo, which is probably the most typical instance of filler on the album (not poorly-played or anything, just unnecessary--and nowhere near as excessive as Da Capo's "Revelation"). The rest of the album is packed with excellent eclectic styles, like the folky "Willow Willow" and the dark and sublime closer, "Gather 'Round." Throughout the album, Lee's voice sounds as good and expressive as it ever has, and the band sounds pretty tight as well, though sometimes, in-between some blistering and jaw-dropping moments, Jay Donnelan's fuzzed-out guitar lines start to sound the same. Despite its occasional long-winded moments, I'd have to say that I enjoy Out Here as much or maybe more than Four Sail. Since it's out of print, the inclusion of Out Here in this set is worth the price of admission alone.

False Start is easily the weakest Love album. Yes, it does include that Hendrix collaboration, "The Everlasting First," but it's not THAT great of a song, and Jimi's guitar really doesn't sound anywhere near its peaks on his own records. The album grooves along at a pretty good clip, with songs that blend into each other, which is cool, but what's missing is substance. Arthur Lee, at his best, possessed a gift for turning mundane details into deep and resonant lyrics, but on False Start the lyrics rarely rise above the simply mundane, like the simple sing-song of "Flying," and the facile narration of "Slick Dick." Some of it's good gritty fun, the way throwaway rock should be, like the soulful "Feel Daddy Feel Good," but much of it is lyrical white noise set to some pretty groovy rock. Throw in an unnecessary live version of "Stand Out" (one of Out Here's more forgettable tracks) and at just under 30 minutes, False Start seems more than a bit half-hearted. Still, Lee's got that signature something in his voice and delivery, so even when he's mediocre it's worth some attention.

Live In England 1970 is probably what the serious collectors are interested in, and for pretty good reason. Not only is it the earliest official live Love album, but it also spans all of their albums through Out Here, including Forever Changes. I don't know if I'd call the live disc essential, but it's definitely worthwhile. The performances (from 3 different shows) can best be described as raw, for better and worse. On a few numbers, like "My Little Red Book," "Bummer In The Summer" and an epic take on "Gather 'Round," the band's all-electric sound really adds some weight and grit to Love's harder rock sound, and Lee's vocals really nail the songs' sentiments. On the other hand, he strains to hit the notes on "Orange Skies" and "Andmoreagain," and the heavy rock is a bit too plodding for some of the more delicate numbers. Likewise, "August" lacks some of the punch that made it such an effective opener for Four Sail. It's all a matter of taste, though, and I expect many fans will rightly be delighted with the live disc.

As a package, this reissue has its pros and cons. The most important thing--the sound--is great, so that's a relief and a pleasure. A couple things are a bit annoying, though. It's a 3 CD set, but the music could fit onto 2--honestly, it's pretty laughable that False Start, at 29:30, gets a full disc. It would have been nice to go for 2 discs (at the expense of having to split False Start up) in order to lower the price, which is not cheap. The packaging is nice--a fold out cardboard/plastic case with a raised "Love" logo on the front. I agree with the first review that the liner notes leave a bit to be desired, especially considering the price and inclusion of 3 albums' worth of music, but it's nice to get the album credits, and there are some good pictures. To sum up, I'd say that this collection is essential for Love fans, and the most cost-effective way to get this otherwise out-of-print and unreleased material in a consolidated form. Yeah, the music gets mixed reviews from a lot of critics and fans, but if you love Forever Changes and like Four Sail, there's a whole lot to enjoy here, and a lot that I think is worthwhile. Finally, be aware that this is a limited edition of 5,000 copies--even though this music is back in print, it might not be for long. Hope you enjoy!

The rediscovery of a lost past.......2007-06-26

Following the disintegration of the classic Love lineup in mid 1968, Arthur Lee assembled a new version of the band before signing a deal with Bob Krasnow of Blue Thumb Records. According to an oft repeated tale, Elektra complained that they were still owed one last album and so they were allowed to help themselves to ten of the tracks that had already been recorded. These were assembled into 'Four Sail' - an album which along with all the other Elektra releases is now deservedly available in an expanded and remastered form. The sessions for Blue Thumb continued and the result was 'Out Here' - a double album which was uneven certainly, but which also contained some of Lee's best ever compositions: 'I Still Wonder', 'Listen To My Song, 'Nice To Be', 'Willow, Willow'and 'Gather Round'. It would be fair to say that the lengthy instrumental passages on two other fine songs ('Love Is More Than Words'and 'Doggone')tended to divide opinion! By 1970 Love's lineup had been modified and the next round of studio recordings yielded 'False Start'. This album was quite unlike anything the band had ever recorded before. There were no acoustic guitars and the melodies sounded less inspired. The lyrics seemed as though they had been made up on the spot and Lee's special talent for forging clever rhymes from his wonderfully surreal imagery seemed to have been deliberately suppressed. This said, the extremely heavy guitar sound helps to drive the album along with hypnotic effect - and this is especially the case with 'Anytime', 'Ride That Vibration' and the dynamic live cut, 'Stand Out'. What makes this latest 3CD package so essential is the inclusion of a live set from Love's 1970 tour of Britain. Here the 'False Start' lineup tackle a highly repesentative setlist from the group's back catalogue in a dynamic and yet sensitive way. Four stars are awarded because of the superb remastering that has lately been brought to these recordings. I have witheld the final star because of the accompanying booklet. Although its layout is attractive, the essay it contains has been hastily written - sometimes to the detriment of accuracy. If your interest in Love is all embracing then you really cannot afford to be without this. If however, you believe Love and 'Forever Changes' are synonymous then you may want to think about it first. But either way, don't take too long .... it says 'LIMITED EDITION' on mine!

When one thinks of musicals from Hollywood's golden age, the initials MGM come almost instantly to mind. Indeed when veteran song-and-dance man George M. I am so very glad I bought this CD. I own the DVD of "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and watch it all the time, so I almost didn't buy this, wondering if I really needed yet another CD.

Well, thank God I didn't pay any attention to that dumb idea!

If you love "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and Cagney, you just have to buy this soundtrack. It's like being able to take the movie with you anywhere ... it's not just the songs - as others have said - but also includes bits of Cagney's voice-overs, even the tap-dancing from the end of "Little Johnny Jones." And since the audio system in my car is better than my TV's, it all seemed even bigger, richer and better. (George M. would love that!)

What a find!!.......2003-06-15

I haven't been able to see this movie on TV since Turner bought it (don't get TCM), but if you've seen the movie several tims, as I have, listening to this CD is very nearly as good as watching it all the way through. (I'm so delighted with it that I'm even willing to forgive TCM for putting a paper ad inside with the disc.)

Monumental effort must have gone into this soundtrack, given the age of the original recordings. The tracks here are crisp, clear, and bright, with no evidence of how long ago they were first put down. The editors were also generous in their inclusion of dialogue that ties some of the tracks together (for example, we hear the man tell Johny Jones to watch for the skyrocket, then we hear the skyrocket as it leads into "Give My Regards to Broadway"). There are a couple of places where the endings are slightly abrupt but this is because, in the movie, the music fades into extended dialogue.

The only bit of dialogue I expected to hear in a song, but didn't, is in "Over There" near the very end of the film, when Cagney/Cohan has fallen in step with the soldiers going off to WWII, as they're singing "Over There", when the soldier nearest him says something like, "What's wrong, old timer, don't know the words?" and Cagney says, "Seems to me I do" and starts singing along. That's minor and pales next to how wonderful the rest of this soundtrack is.

One of the biggest treats on this CD is that we get to hear some of Cagney's tapping, notably in "Give My Regards to Broadway", "You're a Grand Old Flag", and - one of my favorite moments in movie history - when he dances down the White House stairs to "Yankee Doodle" near the end).

The outtake is not a humorous one, simply a track they decided not to use. It and the rehearsal tracks are all just the performers voices with piano accompaniment. I especially enjoyed hearing Cagney rehearsing "You're a Grand Old Flag".

If you like Cagney, if you like Cohan's music, if you like movies "the way they used to make them", or if you're not ashamed to get a little choked up with patriotism once in a while, you will not be disappointed in this CD!

A Soundtrack Every American Should Own.......2002-09-23

Finally! If you own that Hollywood Soundstage abomination of the "Yankee Doodle Dandy" soundtrack you can finally pitch it. Here is the real article. Rhino (Turner Classic Movies Music) lovingly restored the music from the beloved "Yankee Doodle Dandy" motion picture starring James Cagney. This soundtrack sounds astonishing considering it's 60 years old. It's very obvious some loving care was taken in it's production for which we all should be greatful. The liner notes also are great with informative text and wonderful photos from the movie. The marvelous George M. Cohan songs gives one goosebumps and bring tears to the eyes. We all need this type of patriotic pep rally, especially in these tough times. As I've said, this soundtrack belongs in every American's home just as much as that "Grand Old Flag"! I believe there are plans to release the movie on DVD, hopefully soon.

For those who want the most remembered passages of classical music's best-loved works, here's a package for you. On this bargain priced double-CD, you'll find music from 40 different classical composers; for the most part, the recordings excerpted here are some of the very best. Of course, you only get one Bach sampling (Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, played by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra) and one Mozart (A Little Night Music conducted by Herbert von Karajan), but this is still a nice collection--perhaps the starting point for a budding collection of classical music. This set's downfall? Unfortunately, though the liner notes discuss the evolution of classical music chronologically, the tracks are programmed in alphabetical order by composer's last name. This makes for some startling transitions! Emil Gilels's reflective performance of the Adagio from Beethoven's "Moonlight" sonata is followed by the crashing cymbals and bombast of Carmen's "March of the Toreadors," a recipe for a heart attack if there ever was one. Still, there's something here for everyone and the liner notes even explain what movies this music can be found in. A nice touch. --Jason Verlinde

Watch out for the volume leveling mentioned in another review. Surely the compliers could have come up with a better sort order than by composer. The change in tempo/volume between pieces makes it impossible to enjoy. My two CD's ended up in the trash.

This is a great CD full of many songs that you will recognize and enjoy. If you are someone who likes classical music but doesn't necessarily know which songs or which composers you like, then this CD is for you. You will likely recognize many of the songs as the classical songs you would have picked out to be your favorites.

If you like classical music don't buy this CD........2005-03-11

Most of the tracks were chopped down to 3-4 minutes so some of the best parts of the compositions are missing. I don't know what I was thinking trying to buy 40 classical songs on two CD's. If you really want to enjoy the music you would do better to purchase a CD with fewer, but better quality tracks.

In my years of experience teaching Fine Arts to high school students, I know that the majority, if not all, of the music included on this album is commonly used in collge music appreciation courses. This is an excellent sample of truly all the "greatest hits" of classical music. My students enjoy listening to the music and have later told me when take their required music apreciation courses in college that they "already know it all" because of this CD! The recordings are clear, the selections are passionate, and the listener will gain a familiarity with all of the most commonly heard classical music used in tv commercials, movies, etc.
I recommend this album, along with the boxed set, "Age of the Classics" for anyone who is interested in becoming familiar with the most famous staples of classical music.

A great compilation.......2005-02-09

This cd somes up some of the greatest pieces of instrumental (and is some cases choral) music ever written. It is a great starter for a beginning classical music lover or a quick and easy all-in-one for those of us who study classical music for a living. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who wants to love or already does love classical music.

Nancy Wilson puts such emotion into this music it's almost as if she's been there, done that. She has other recordings of the title song, "Guess Who I Saw Today" but this is the one that pulls on your heart and makes you dread hearing the sadness of that last line. Nancy Wilson is a gem and you can feel her brilliance in this album.

I heard the title song 'Guess Who I Saw Today'like fifteen years ago and remembered being totally blown away by the song-but then being a young twenty year old couldn't get myself to actually go and purchase a Nancy Wilson CD. How un-cool. But the song haunted me and recently I decided to give this CD a try...I'm SO glad I did. Nancy Wilson is a class act who has produced wonderful music. This is the CD to settle back with a nice glass of wine and let you mind flow with the music. This may have been my first Nancy Wilson CD but it certainly will not be my last.

"Funny Girl" was one of the greatest musicals and cast recordings to come ouf of broadway and it created one of the world's greatest performers ever. Happily Barbra Streisand successfully transported herself to film and out came one of the most enjoyable soundtracks ever produced for a film. The film score is so minutely different, the show's composers Styne and Merrill had to take out a couple of songs from the show and wrote the beautiful "Funny Girl" in it's place for the film. This soundtrack tends to in my opinion be more authentic than the original cast recording because they put in non-original material such as "I'd Rather Be Blue Over You (Than Happy with Somebody Else)" written by Billy Rose who would much later marry Fanny Brice and it fits the early 1900's era for which "Funny Girl" is set and Barbra's comedic skills are timeless on this song you may not see it but you can hear it in her voice such as with "The Swan" .Another song they use at the film's climax is "My Man" not only was it a staple in the real Fanny Brice's act it is a power-house. Barbra insisted to sing the first part live on screen and record the latter part it is so effective and you do get all the advantages of this on the soundtrack. One more bonus to this recording is the overture composed for the film is gorgeous and they never played it in the film only on the soundtrack, interestingly they used the the opening theme music from the film as the closing music to the soundtrack. Definitely get this soundtrack it is one of the most delightful scores to one of Hollywood's greatest musicals adapted from the stage and that can't be said too often. "Funny Girl was also one of the last great musicals ever produced out of Hollywood and the linear notes in the CD are informative and fun for musical lovers.

Streisand in prime vocal condition.......2006-09-16

Barbra Streisand will forever be linked to the autobiographical Fanny Brice, a role she originally made her own on Broadway in 1964 and in London the following year; immortalised onscreen four years later (earning an Academy Award as well as countless other trophies). On the original soundtrack album, Ms Streisand is in prime vocal condition, though I do prefer her performance on the OBC album just a little bit more, for she is more brash and unkempt and far more vulnerable with her spin on Fanny. In the film, she is more confident and showman-like.

The film score of FUNNY GIRL does vary greatly from it's Broadway counterpart. The roles of Mrs Brice and Eddie Ryan don't get much to sing (with the deletion of "Who Taught Her Everything?" and "Find Yourself a Man"). Fanny's solo numbers "Who Are You Now?" and "The Music That Makes Me Dance" were abandoned in favour of numbers that the real Fanny was famous for ("I'd Rather Be Blue" and "My Man"). I believe the producers committed the cardinal sin with the deletion of "The Music That Makes Me Dance", a ballad far more memorable and moving than the show's big number "People" (and I know a lot of others feel the same way). Nevertheless, the film soundtrack of FUNNY GIRL is the perfect sonic representation of Streisand's greatest hour on celluloid.

I own the earlier Sony CD pressing (which is full of analogue hiss, reverb and noise), yet from what I hear about the more recent "remaster", the quality of the overall recording is virtually the same. Highly-recommended, but don't expect miracles with sound quality.

Needs more songs. Missing SECOND HAND ROSE........2006-08-08

The soundtrack is good to excellent, but it makes me very
unconfortable that important songs are MISSING. Can you
imagine SECOND HAND ROSE is missing, and Barbra sings it a little
different from the version she did in MY NAME IS BARBRA TV special. I also love the part where Barbra sings " Mr Anstein,
Mr. Arnstein, what a beautiful name". Those two sequences could be combined into a song. I also would have loved a little spoken
comedy in this soundtrack, such as Barbra as Baby Snooks scene,
where she meets the reporters and ends with "the name is Arnstein". Barbra is marvelous in this comedy scene. Barbra is
perfect as a stand-up comedienne, and she would be great
acting such a part in a film.
Barbra recorded the song PEOPLE countless times over the last
decades. Why was SECOND HAND ROSE left out of the soundtrack.
There is enough space on the Audio CD to include this song, as
well as additional ones. A few Bonus songs of Barbra singing
Fanny Brice songs that were considered but that were left out
of the film, would be most welcomed. Looking forward to the next
edition of this soundtrack. hoping that it will be the definite
edition. We Barbra Streisand fans deserve the best.

Ladies & Gentlemen - The Greatest Star.......2005-09-11

This is the first Barbra Streisand album that I had purchased. The experience of seeing the movie, Funny Girl, in September 1968, forever changed me. By the age of 10, I already had an innate sense of the popular music of the day. Being the youngest of three, I had been exposed to the Beach Boys, the Beatles and every pop song since I was born. But I had yet to experience complete awe and adulation for a singer -- that was until Funny Girl and Barbra Streisand. Not only had I never heard vocals so utterly astounding, I never experienced such an array of emotion from a singer. My virgin ears finally heard perfection and it was the first time I got those famous Streisand goose bumps that so many people had talked and written about.

The brilliant score was written by the legendary Jule Styne and Bob Merrill and included such Streisand classics as "I'm The Greatest Star," "Don't Rain On My Parade" Streisand's signature song, "People."

Ten of the fourteen tracks were sung by Streisand with the exception of "If A Girl Isn't Pretty" and "Roller Skate Rag." "You Are Woman, I Am Man" is an hysterically funny duet with Omar Sharif, and two songs that weren't written by Styne and Merrill; "I'd Rather Be Blue Over You (Than Be Happy With Somebody Else)" and "My Man," a song closely identified with Fanny Brice and Barbra Streisand, demonstrate the depth and range of Streisand's emotion. She could be cooing and joking at one moment on the famous bride number; "His Love Makes Me Beautiful," breaking your heart on the Oscar-nominated title cut written specifically for the film, and send your head reeling with her gutsy and explosive vocals on "Don't Rain On My Parade." All of the songs showcase Streisand's versatility as the actress who sings.

Purists might say the Original Broadway Cast Album from 1964 was better, maybe because they were there to witness the 22 year-old ingénue unknown named Barbra Streisand. But when you take a listen to the vocals and the arrangements on this soundtrack, it's hard to argue with aforementioned songs such as "I'd Rather Be Blue," "People," Don't Rain On My Parade" and the finale of all finale's "My Man." At 25 years old, Streisand never sounded stronger or with sang with more conviction.

How many singers can you name that can belt a song like "I'm The Greatest Star" and get away with it?

So many great songs on one CD........2007-01-29

It is difficult to find a CD that has a compilation of great love songs. Usually there are only a few - not enough to warrant buying the CD. However, this one has so many tunes that are familiar and romantic. I grew up with these songs. I watched my parents dancing to some of these and that brings back fond memories. I actually forgot about a couple of these songs until I listened to the samples on Amazon.com and decided it was definitely worth my money. The duets are wonderful. I love "Don't Know Much" and "Tonight I celebrate My Love." Peabo Bryson is one of the most romatic male singers I have ever heard. Remember him with Celine Dion in "Beauty and the Beast"? There are not many love duets these days that I could compare the duets on this CD to - except maybe "I'm Your Angel" with Celine Dion and R. Kelly. I also forgot how wonderful "Arthur's Theme" was. I heard my sister sing it karaoke recently and actually stumbled upon this song on this CD when I was looking for something romantic to listen to. I wish I could write songs as well as these, but at least I know they express the words I cannot say. I highly recommend this CD for the romantic person or couple.

This is a very relaxing cd to listen to. Not to mention very romantic too.It has a good variety of music on it. I recommend it for a cozy evening.

I have really enjoyed sitting quietly and listening to this CD. My favorite "Power of Love" song has always been by Jennifer Rush. Very romantic CD. To be enjoyed with a glass of wine and someone special.

A great collection of easy listening love songs.......2001-03-28

I had been searching high and low for a compilation of what some may consider "sappy love songs." Well, if you happen to love so-called "sappy love songs," as I do, then you've found a great CD! Almost all of the songs on this CD are great and received endless airplay in their day. My favorite selections are the duets - many of which are either no longer available on a regular CD or just were released as singles.

Lady in Red will always be a classic....Power of Love, by Jennifer Rush, however, is one of my favorites on this disc, along with Unchained Melody.

I actually was so pleased to see a CD available because I have been longing for the movie "with a song in my heart" to become available on VHS and then on DVD, and it never has, so now at least I can enjoy the songs from the movie. The cast track from Pal Joey was just an added bonus.

With A Song In My Heart CD.......2007-03-19

I saw the film, "With A Song In My Heart" when I was twelve or thirteen years old and have wanted the sound track for many years. As an impressionable teenager in the 1950s, I have collected over time many of the films from that time on VHS or DVD, to satisfy my memories of the period. I regret that this particular film is not available on VHS or DVD, but, this CD is the next best choice. It is really enjoyable to hear the richness and depth of the voice of Jane Froman, who was one of the best singers of the time. I can still recall many scenes from the film and this CD revives the memories so well.

WITH A SONG IN MY HEART

Susan Hayward played Jane Froman in the film but Froman herself dubbed the vocals. This album of songs was originally issued as a 10" Lp. None of the tracks are taken from the film: They are all studio re-recordings. Later, Capitol re-released it as a 12" LP with two extra songs added. It is that expanded [program included here. Froman is in great voice, though the orchestrations are overly lush and string heavy. Still, the songs include such standards as "It's a Good Day", "Get Happy", and "Embraceable You" making for an enjoyable mini-concert.

PAL JOEY

Capitol's cast album of the 1952 revival has long been a collector's item. The original Lp was deleted in 1960 and did not resurface until Broadway Angel released it on CD (briefly) in 1993. As the stars of the revival Harold Lang and Vivienne Segal had already made a studio cast album for Columbia - an album that helped inspire the revival - they were unable to re-record their songs for Capitol, and the label turned to Jane Froman and Dick beavers to fill in. The revised orchestrations sound dated now, but here is a chance to hear Elaine Stritch singing "Zip" and to enjoy the lusty voice of Helen Gallagher early in her career.

In the end it's the WITH A SONG IN MY HEART selections (making their debut on CD here) that make this CD worthwhile. For PAL JOEY the studio recording (available from SONY) is preferable, however if one is so inclined you can assemble your own cast album of the '52 revival by combining tracks from both releases.

"Pal Joey's" Pal.......2006-07-30

While the legubrious and over-orchestrated songs from the film "With a Song in My Heart" are typical of their era (and Jane Froman's stilted renditions are what once stood for emoting) the "Pal Joey" cast recording is an absolute delight. The orchestrations are bouncy and jazzy in a way that has long been forgotten, and the performances (except for the aforementioned Ms. Froman, whose Vulgnarian renditions are at times quite disconcerting, and who hits the sonic notes like lazer beems but misses the emotional ones by a country mile) are exceptional. Helen Gallagher deserved her Tony from the evidence of this recording, with Elaine Stritch not far behind her. But the overall impact surpasses any recording of "Joey" including the historic one that lead to this revival. There's energy, intensity and a whole lot of fantastic song writing (leave it to to Rogers and Hart) to satisfy any musical theater fan. A must have for anyone who loves "Old Broadway."

Jane Froman was one of the top vocalists of her era. Froman's greatness is celebrated in this new 2-on-1 album, which comprises the film soundtrack of WITH A SONG IN MY HEART as well as the 1952 Broadway revival cast album of PAL JOEY.

WITH A SONG IN MY HEART was the life story of Jane Froman, with the lovely Susan Hayward in the lead role. Froman herself supplied the singing for the film. Numbers include "It's a Good Day", the bittersweet and humorous "They're Either Too Young or Too Old", "Blue Moon", "Get Happy", "Tea for Two" and "I'm Thru with Love".

The 1952 Broadway revival of PAL JOEY was the result of the huge success of a studio album released by Columbia the year before (which featured Vivienne Segal reprising her original role of Vera and Harold Lang as Joey). Segal and Lang headlined the new revival with Helen Gallagher (SWEET CHARITY, HAZEL FLAGG) as Gladys Bumps and Elaine Stritch (ON YOUR TOES, GOLDILOCKS) as reporter Melba Snyder.

Having already recorded their roles for the Columbia album, Segal and Lang saw little need in re-recording them for the revival album on the Capitol label. Instead, the roles of Vera and Joey were covered by Jane Froman and Dick Beavers.

The cast album suffers on many levels. First, the absence of Segal and Lang is quite distracting, and secondly the new Overture can't even compare with the scintillanting original.

The Columbia studio album is the version to buy in addition to this, though both albums have their strong and weak points. As per usual, Elaine Stritch brings her impressive and formidable comic timing to the fore in the show-stopping "Zip", and Helen Gallagher's silvery voice is perfect for "That Terrific Rainbow".
