      Like Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Little Richard, Elvis, Johnny Cash, Buddy Holly, and Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins was a rock n' roll original, one of the first to fuse country & western, bluegrass and blues into the new thing called rock n' roll. Carl Perkins' main contributions were his songwriting and his guitar playing but he was an all around performer and knew how to sing his stuff too. This CD combines two albums and gives you some songs The Beatles covered, "Matchbox", "Honey Don't", "Everybody's Tryiing To Be My Baby". But don't forget he also wrote "Blue Suede Shoes" and does a funkier version than the Elvis version you already know. It is a great joy to hear all of the songs on this album (every song is work of art unto itself) and to hear the great dexterity of his precise but unpredictable guitar playing, and the unique twists and turns of his music. This is not simply rockabilly music, this is sophisticated cross-cultural music that came to The Beatles completely ready to play to the mass audience. Carl Perkins deserves your attention because of his pioneering guitar work, which laid the foundation for George Harrison's enigmatic lead guitar style, and because he took the basic tools of country bluegrass and blues and fashioned something unusual and brilliant out of it. The greatest joy of this CD is to discover the Carl Perkins sound in The Beatles and the seeds of The Beatles in Carl Perkins.
