Like Many Other Groups of the Era, They Recorded Sessions at the BBC for Various Radio and TV Broadcasts and Those Sessions Are Presented on this Double CD Set. Cd1 Has all their Stunning Live-in-the-studio Radio Transmissions While Cd2 Includes the Audio from TV Show Tapings, Including an Appearance on "The Tom Jones Show" that was Misplaced for Many Years.

Technical Flaws.......2007-07-04
Always nice to hear the Moodies. It's just so dissapointing to hear songs recorded ,what I would call, unprofessionally. Tracks ending abruptly. Fading in or out at the wrong places. Canned music, blended in, is not exciting. But, It's got a lot of great moments and brings back good memories. Voices aren't always great but I guess there wasn't a lot of material to choose from.
Forty-one tracks for your pleasure. Are you sitting comfortably? .......2007-06-19
As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.
They earned the title "Magnificent Moodies" early on. The assemblage of the BBC tracks only further solidifies the reward. While the double package is called "Live At The BBC 67-70" there is more! The second disc is audio from TV tapings.
If you are a collector of must have Moody Blues recordings this entered the list the second it left the factory. For those that purchased some of their material in the past it will give you another side of the band. The track listings couldn't be a better representation of the collective genius from the group. Not only are the hits and radio tracks available for your enjoyment but some of the more esoteric and underrated tunes ("Best Way To Travel", "Visions Of Paradise, and "The Actor"). "Best Way To Travel" has never received the acclaim it deserves. While previously tracks were available as a bonus on special SACD pressings, this gives it to you in the full and proper dose.
Before we check out some of their superlative versions of their own material it must be written how great the cover of the Animals hit "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" was constructed.
The back-to-back combination of "Tuesday Afternoon" and "Ride My See-Saw" offers enough exquisite beauty to enthrall the harshest critic but "Lovely To See You (With the acoustic guitar sounding as if it is in your living room) could accelerate the pulse of the most docile individual.
As you sample the choice cuts don't forget to digest the short version of "Nights In White Satin" clocking in a shade over three minutes."
Could you ever get enough versions of "Gypsy"? Its inclusion here only solidifies it's golden splendor.
Forty-one tracks for your pleasure. Are you sitting comfortably?
Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

Good Sounding Moody Blues Stuff!!.......2007-06-12
I was waiting for this 2 cd set to come out for a long, long, time. The sound is pretty good and the song selection is excellent for the time it was recorded. At least on this BBC recording, unlike other BBC live recordings, it doe not have an announcer before each song with on occasion, a one question interview with a band member. I find that part unnecessary and am glad its not on this set. The only problem I have with this set is the editing. Moody Blues songs usually have great endings to their songs but on this release the endings are cut off and an audience applause in put in rather bluntly at times which cheapens the recordings. The sound is great for a BBC live set-average stereo but the songs seem cut off and shortened in places--- I guess to save room for other songs. This results in the whole song version not heard at times. That is probably the only thing wrong with this 2 cd set. It ought to be re-edited and the songs presented the way they were played--take out a few if you have to but lets keep the original song in. Despite this problem, I recommend this set highly. Do not let it get away. Enjoy Moody fans!!!!!!!!!! Good linear notes and pictures also.
Historic stuff.......2007-06-01
If you have the new SACD special editions of the "core 7" original albums you've already heard most of these tracks. They were added as "special material" to those releases. However, as the other poster mentioned if you didn't want to spring the big money for albums you already own here they are, collected on two discs. The quality is no great shakes for the most part - mostly mid-range and brittle highs, but these date from over thirty years ago, and for radio to boot. The performances in many cases are a bit suspect as well; in some cases the instrumental sections sound identical to the studio versions with live vocals added. I think the Moodies did occasionally do this, considering how dense their studio recordings were it's no wonder. Other tracks however are totally live . . . they're ragged compared to the studio counterparts but have a wonderful energy that makes them a treasure on their own terms.
The studio albums are definitely the best way to acquaint one's self with these songs if you haven't already, but for the hardcore fan this is a very worthwhile release to add to the library.
A Christmas Gift Long Overdue!.......2007-05-26
Just as I was about to post a scathing review criticising the way the BBC material was spread out among the new deluxe editions, I saw this upcoming release and smiled. It's like waking up one morning and finding a gift from some Christmas long ago that you knew was there but couldn't find. For years I have been wondering why the Moodies haven't released their BBC sessions like artists such as Hendrix, Cream, Jack Bruce, The Who, The Beatles, Zeppelin, and even Kaleidoscope have done. Then I saw that they were releasing the material but you have to buy the original albums (which most of us have done more than once)again to get it all. Finally, in one complete volume, is everything that was salvaged from the vaults. It's like the Moodies reunited completely, jumped in a time machine, and made a new album for a new millenium. I am giddy in expectation of this collection!

blues-rock galore.......2006-05-23
'Free' ushered in the 1970's as a power-rock trio in the mold of 'Cream', topped off with the powerful voice of frontman Paul Rogers, who would gleen further critical acclaim later in the decade as the voice of 'Bad Company'. While many of 'Free's compositions are basic blues-rock, the vocal talents of Paul Rogers and the sharply punctuated guitar riffs of Paul Kossoff go a long way towards redeeming most of the selections. Bassist Andy Fraser teams up with Rogers on most of the composing, and with drummer Simon Kirke to form a sturdy, if unspectacular rhythm section. The band employed plenty of posturing and strutting to supplement the testosterone laced lyrics and pulsing beats, most of which is well-received as genuine by the British audiences captured here. At the same time, the absence of stylistic diversity probably spelled out the fate of the band as a one-trick pony in the US more than anything else. At home in England, however, where the blues was king in the mid-to-late 1960's, the band scored two additional Top Ten and one #13 hit between 1970 and 1973. Unfortunately, none of these commercially successful tracks are performed on 'Free Live'.
'Free Live' is composed of thirteen tracks recorded in January of 1970 at the Locarno Ballroom in Sunderland, England, and the 1,500 capacity Fairfield Halls Arts Center in Croydon, England in September of 1970. In that same month, the band's only Top 40 US release, 'All Right Now', maxed out at number four. The original vinyl closed with a studio track recorded in March of 1971, the acoustic ballad 'Get Where I Belong', and fittingly this expanded edition of 'Free Live' concludes with a more vibrant and urgent alternate take of the same track. Sandwiched between are six additional bonus tracks from the Sunderland and Croydon performances.
The producers of 'Free Live' seem keenly aware of the band's limitations, and provide two versions of three of the best tracks available. Nothing, of course, matches up with the raw appeal of 'All Right Now', and the Croydon performance aptly demonstrates how the band's interpretation of the song evolved over the course of their touring. It's such a stunning representation of the power rock epitomized by band's such as Led Zeppelin and Grand Funk Railroad in that same year, that it justifies the price of the disc by itself. Two versions of 'Mr. Big', a heavy blues-rock number with a fairly catchy basic guitar hook are also offered. Only on 'Get Where I Belong' does the band diverge significantly from the blues-rock genre, with lyrics focused on repentance and redemption ("Help me to repay things I have done wrong, help me find a way to get where I belong"). The next nearest thing to diversity is found on the second track, 'I'm a Mover', which might be better described as boogie-rock with guitar lines garnished in psychedelia. Other than that, the remaining tracks saunter from slow to mid to fast tempo variations on the blues-rock theme. The longest track is the plodding, bass-driven 'Moonshine', which times out at nearly nine and one-half minutes, while the shortest track is the 3:42 rendition of 'I'm a Mover'. Both versions of 'All Right Now', the main attraction, are in the six minute range.
This particular version of 'Free Live' comes packaged with a well designed and informative booklet, featuring numerous performance and publicity shots of the band, plenty of details on the individual tracks, and well-composed text detailing the short-lived history of the band. The recording is as clean and well-defined as any recording I've heard from the era. 'Free' possessed a great deal of heart and attitude, and coupled with Rogers pristine vocals and Kossoff's intense guitar work, this product clamours for a listen even 36 years after the tracks were laid down. It's not essential, but it is enjoyable. And of course, turn it up loud for maximum listening pleasure!
A great album!.......2005-12-21
I have just purchased this after owning the original LP for so many years... the remastering has really made this a great release audio wise and the extra tracks are a great bonus... I just about knew the original album cut of All Right Now off by heart with the guitar cutting in and out... Now there's a fresh version to memorise, even though it becomes apparent why this track was not originally included - Paul muffs up one of the vocal lines... but nothing to worry about.
Mr Big is also another standout track... Andy Fraser's bass solo still gets me even to this day... awesome! Kirke's drumming as ever is also excellent throughout... What a great band. Buy this album, it's a must have for Free fans!
The Third Best Live Album of Alltime. (A Necessity fro anyone who loves live rock). .......2005-10-28
Free. Rodgers, Kossof, Kirke, and Fraser. The remastering of this classic live album is impeccable and the bonus tracks are a must for any ardent Free fan.
The original album (consisting of tracks one through eight)are stellar. The album kicks off with the classic, "All Rigth Now"
This song basically shaped all of AC/DC's material in both the Bon Scott Era (the better era of AC/DC) and the Brian Johnson Era. A Free neophyte would easily asscocite the opening track, "All Rigth Now" with AC/DC, an rightly so.
"Be My Friend" and "Get to Where I Belong" are a couple of best slow, riff-rocking, awe-inspiring songs on this album and it is truly an experience to here it live.
One may be inclined to inquire. what are the better live albums than Free Live?
They are:
1. How the West Was Won-Led Zeppelin
2. On Your Feet or On Your Knees-Blue Oyster Cult
IMPORTANT: Free Live is a perfect amalgamtion of the two aforementioned live albums. First, Free Live is remastered, like How The West Was Won. Secondly, this album is one CD runs about 77 minuted long, like On Your Feet Or On Your Knees. You will not find blazing guitar solos, although their are some outstanding ones included in this album, this more of a vocals ephasized album, not guitar oriented album.
This Band Rocks!!! RIP Paul Kossoff.......2005-10-08
This album was released back in 1971 and they sound as fresh today as they did back then. The Classic "All Right Now" is an extended 6 minute version of the single which features the late, great Paul Kosoff on guitar who set the benchmark for aspiring Rock Guitarists. There have been lots of imitators but this guy was the original is still the best.Rest In Peace Paul. You are sadly missed but I know you are still sending guitar riffs soaring into the stratosphere in Rock and Roll Heaven where as the song goes "You know they have a Hell of a band"
Free - 'Live' (Universal) UK import with bonus tracks.......2005-04-25
First released in 1971 as this was Free's fifth actual lp.This import reissue features the eight cuts that were pressed onto the original album, plus seven(7)bone-headed(er,I mean bonus cuts)tagged on for your listening pleasure.A few of the bonus tracks are of a SAME tune that was on the original lp,but a live take from ANOTHER gig on the same tour. So,in a sense,'Live' is somewhat like an audio scrap book for Free's late '71 UK tour.Tunes I thought were great to hear were their only hit "All Right Now","Be A Friend","Fire And Water",the touching "Ride On A Pony" and "Mr.Big".Line-up:Paul Rodgers-vocals,Paul Kossoff(R.I.P.)-guitar,Andy Fraser-bass&keyboards and Simon Kirke-drums.Great sound quality.Enjoy,now.

Live debut of legendary band.......2007-07-01
This was the first album by John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, whose ever-changing line up had temporarily stabilized as John Mayall (vocal, harmonica, guitar, 9-string guitar), Roger Dean (guitar), John McVie (bass) and Hughie Flint (drums), and it was recorded live. Klooks Kleek was at the Railway Hotel, next door to Decca's recording studios in West Hampstead. The club's compère Johnny Gunnell, together with his brother Rik Gunnell, persuaded Decca's engineers to run cables from an open studio window into the club, enabling studio quality sound in an environment in which the band excelled, and so their gig of Monday 7 December 1964 was preserved for posterity. At the time, the band (with a different guitarist and drummer) had released only one single, Crawling Up A Hill, which opened the live set, and they also previewed Crocodile Walk, their second single, which came out in April 1965, shortly after the album was released.
For the live recording the band was augmented by Nigel Stanger on tenor sax, plus some appropriate novelty slide sax sounds on The Hoot Owl and Chicago Line. Both of these and most of the rest of the record are John Mayall songs not recorded elsewhere, mostly in Chicago and country blues styles, and there is also a strange mash up of Night Train and Lucille.
To the original album have been appended five bonus tracks. These are both sides of the two singles, all in their original mono (stereo mixes of both sides of the second single can be found on London Blues (1964-1969)), plus My Baby Is Sweeter. This was recorded at the same session as the Crocodile Walk single but wasn't released until Thru the Years in 1971, and is the only stereo track on this CD.
John Mayall was one of the most important figures of the whole blues movement, and had a big impact through the astute use of the musicians he developed in the Bluesbreakers over a number of years, and through his own musicianship, and this atmospheric recording shows from where it stemmed.
RIP Rik Gunnell who died this month (June 2007)
Live Taste of Early Mayall.......2007-02-17
Frankly, I didn't know this album existed until now but after reading the informative booklet that accompanies the CD I discovered that this is actually a reissue of John Mayall's first long player! It surprised me since I have been a Mayall fan since the 60s and never saw John Mayall Plays John Mayall while browsing in any record store. Anyway, now its been remastered for CD and Mayall fans will find lots to enjoy.
When you are listening to this, keep in mind that this was recorded live in 1964. If you do that, you are going to be amazed at what you find here. I pretty much like the whole CD, including the generous addition of five bonus tracks recorded in the same general time period. However, I do have some favorite tracks. These include both takes on Crawling Up A Hill, When I'm Gone, both takes of Crocodile Walk, What's the Matter With You, Runaway, Heartache, Chicago Line (redone by Mayall 30 years later with another group as the title cut of their album), and Mr James. About the only thing I don't like about the CD is the goofy Hoot Owl. But hey, that's the only one out of seventeen songs.
The CD comes with an informative booklet containing lots of early photos of Mayall and his band. In addition to Mayall, one other member of the band here remains internationally famous today. That is John McVie, who most people know went on to fame then fortune as a founding member and the "Mac" of Fleetwood Mac.
If you like John Mayall, and I assume you do if you are reading this, then you should include this Klooks Kleek live CD in your collection as soon as possible to hear what you have been missing. I'm sure glad I did!

Customer Reviews:
Tony Blair's Favorite Band***...........2007-01-02
...which, if nothing else, probably is an indication that Blair DID inhale in college. Too bad he couldn't have been Bush's roommate. He could have put the needle down on "Mouthful of Grass" and mellowed George W. right out..
This cd seems a bit late arriving in more ways than one, but it's a nice reminder of what an underrated group Free was---tignt as the sheets on a Marine's bed, but always a great prescription for tension reduction.
Disc One is the real winner here. Disc Two is about as useful as wisdom teeth. They could just as well have put "Free Live" into the package and provided some indication of what the group really sounded like live. Disc Two is worth about one star. Since it's so poorly recorded, it's just extra baggage.
But Disc One has the goods. There's plenty of material from the second studio album, simply titled "Free", which was full of great stuff... "Woman" , "I'll Be Creepin'", &"Trouble on Double Time" are as good as anything Free ever recorded. "Mouthful of Grass" is so pastorally laid back that it nearly sounds like Fairport Convention. "Over the Green Hills" is Rodgers purest sounding vocal.
The rhythm section of Kirke and Fraser shines throughout, and of course Kossoff is well...Kossoff. Nobody approaches him as a string bender except for possibly Robin Trower--who late in the 70's was at times blatantly copying the Free sound... (check out Trower's "Road to Freedom" and "River" if you don't believe it.)
Everybody knows that Lynyrd Skynyrd borrowed heavily from Free, and so many vocalists imitated Paul Rogers that it isn't funny.
In conclusion: despite the weak second disk, this is worth purchasing. If you don't believe me, ask the PM.
*** Free is Blair's favorite band according to "Mojo" magazine, anyway. He was born in '53, so it kind of makes sense. He would have been 17 when "All Right Now" came out.
Captures Free in their uncontrolled glory.......2006-12-28
The reviewer who criticized the sound quality of Disk 2 is not wrong. It sounds like it was taken from a small home recorder in the back of the hall. However, for Free fans, Kossoff's frenzied, nearly out of control, playing on their rave-up "The Hunter" is worth the second rate audio. I am very glad they included it and very pleased with the rest of the collection - after I adjusted to the sound quality. If you want great audio and a super introduction to this great and unique band, get the two CD best of collection, Molten Gold. Perhaps we would agree that is for fans and collectors only.
Hit and Miss for Free.......2006-12-13
This 2cd set is kind of disappointing. The 1st CD has good sound -it is somewhat stereo and contains alternate cuts of Free but none come from their last 3 albums. The 2nd CD is very disappointing. It is a live recording which sounds like a bad bootleg. The sound is muffled in a lot of places and hard to hear clearly. They should have left this one out. There is even the sound of a phone ringing or a alarm in the background on a couple of the cuts. Free fans--just get this for the 1st cd--the other is very very bad. Where are the cuts from the last lineup of Free--are they out there-Hearbreaker, Catch a Train etc?

Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2007-06-03
The cuts that should have Clapton on don't, and the cuts that have Peter Green on don't feature him. Historic, if you're interested in the history of John Mayall. Disappointing if you loved the Bluesbreakers with Clapton and Green.
Unique versions of both well-loved and first-heard material.......2007-05-03
Given the BBC's unique archiving policy in previous decades, it is a very welcome surprise to discover that these early John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers sessions still exist at all, let alone in such pristine quality as found here. A lot of early BBC sessions have only survived on World Service transcription discs of programmes, and so have disc-jockey voice-overs on them, but these are free of such irritations.
Ken Garner's invaluable book In Session Tonight gives the date the original band passed their audition as July 1964, and their first session as 30 October 1965, so it was a complete surprise to me to find that the first three tracks here come from a Saturday Club session dated 26 April 1965. The three tracks included from this session comprise re-workings of the band's first two singles, Crawling Up A Hill and Crocodile Walk, as well as an unrecorded version of Sonny Boy Williamson's Bye Bye Bird. The singles, from 1964, featured Roger Dean on guitar, but the line-up of the Bluesbreakers was frequently changing and by the time of this session he had been replaced by Eric Clapton, so this disc affords a unique opportunity to hear what he brought to these John Mayall songs. His previous band, the Yardbirds, featured a number of Sonny Boy Williamson songs and even backed him onstage, so the third number may well have been his choice.
The second session, here dated 25 October 1965, conversely, is thought to feature Jeff Kribit from Dr K's Blues Band on guitar, standing in for Clapton who was away in Greece, and included I'm Your Witchdoctor in a version without his witchy-woo guitar effects, and two otherwise unrecorded Mayall originals.
The two titles from the 14 March 1966 session included another unrecorded original and a unique version of Key To Love without the horn section that graced the Beano album version (Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton) when it was recorded a month later.
By 23 January 1967 Eric Clapton had left, taking Jack Bruce with him. Peter Green and John McVie were of course to later follow the same path by forming Fleetwood Mac, but are here performing recent single Sitting In The Rain, Leaping Christine (from A Hard Road, where a horn section was again featured) and Ridin' On The L&N, which had featured on an EP that was a collaboration with harmonica player Paul Butterfield and sounds quite different here.
In Session Tonight then lists two sessions for John Peel's Top Gear show, each featuring Mick Taylor in place of Peter Green. Given the paltry playing time of 37 minutes on this CD, one can only presume that both of these sessions have been irredeemably lost, because the CD then jumps awkwardly to a very different band performing on Bob Harris's Old Grey Whistle Test programme on 21 October 1975 for the final two tracks. Despite Don "Sugarcane" Harris on violin and Dee McKinnie's lead vocals, it was a jump too far for this listener in this context. I do hope the intervening sessions turn up for a future re-issue, but in the meantime there is an excellent alternative history to be unearthed here.
Good But Hardly Essential.......2007-04-13
My interest in the music of John Mayall goes way back and I'm a fool for almost anything that's issued in his name as long as its not another rearranged and repackaged compilation of songs I already have several times over. Recently, there have been a number of live albums of earlier material appear on the market. Some of these are very good, and some, like Live at the BBC are merely decent.
The songs on this compilation are mostly from some BBC sessions recorded in the mid-60s, with the last two from 1975. My favorites here are Crawling Up A Hill, Crocodile Walk, I'm Your Witchdoctor, Sitting In The Rain and Leaping Christine. While listening, note that Cheating Woman has a line that Cream later filches and which perhaps Mayall filched from elsewhere. Key to Love stands out as being very different from the version most Mayall fans are used to hearing. The two songs from the seventies are with a band that is one of my least favorite lineups and both are far too jivey a la Sly Stone for my taste.
Overall, Live at the BBC is good, but hardly essential. If you are a Mayall completist, then by all means you must have this. But if you are on a budget or merely discriminating, I would recommend Mayall Plays Mayall:Live at Klooks Kleek for a taste of the early days instead.
A legend!!.......2007-02-11
I was in a shop some few days back, when I found some CD of John mayall lying along with the BBC session. Bought the stuff and it was superb!! BBC sessions are always very elite and prestigious appearances to any band/singer. This is one hell of a concert which you should buy if looking for early Bluesbrakers jam.
Chill out!!

Pure blues explosion at it's best........1998-10-09
This CD is worth your time and money, anyone who likes raw rock will love this CD. It's a great time to be a Jon Spencer fan.
The Blues Is STILL #1.......1998-09-02
The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion is one of the few bands in rock 'n' roll that can inspire me enough to leave my home, wait in line to purchase a ticket and then wait in another line to see the show. They are also one of the few bands for whom I'd ask for seconds. Truth be known, they are one of the few bands worth a damn these days. "Controversial Negro" documents the indefatigable trio at the Hotel Congress in Tuscon, Arizona. After listening to the record, there is no question in my mind that the Tuscon crowd got more than their money's worth and so did I. To see the Blues Explosion live is to see pure televangilism delivered in the stylings of a young James Brown, accompanied by his band mates who have one foot firmly planted in Church and the other hanging recklessly over the edge. Particularly compelling are the tunes, "Vacuum of Lonliness" and "Sticky" The use of the theremin threads the needle like no other sound produced by machine and Russell Simmons proves himself to be one of the (most unlikely) funkiest drummers performing today. Taking their cues form their leader, Bauer and Simmons are always able to put it right in the pocket once spencer has lit the fuse. This is a must-have for any die-hard Blues Explosionist.

looking for this live cd,
led zeppelin knebworth 79.
can anyone help?
Very good,.......2001-05-22
The performance of All Right Now was sloppy. Otherwise would have been 5 stars.
Neglected masterpiece.......2000-05-10
Back when bands were somehow able to make live recordings full of surprises, excitement, and occasional group improvisation, this one is a diamond in the rough. I've owned the vinyl for well nigh 25 years now, and the utterly unadorned sounds of the guitar, the bass, the drums, plus the howling voice of Paul Rodgers - why, it's primal blues rock at its sparest ... and most devastating. Andy Fraser's bass lines are lithe and kinetic. Paul Kossoff wrenches notes from the neck of his Les Paul in a style that still sets him apart from all who have followed. He left us far too soon. Only complaint is the haphazard rendition of "All Right Now" - (they were probably sick of it by then).
Great - I was at the Sunderland gigs.......1999-07-04
Always a great live band - there should be more live issue
a must for british blues lovers.......1999-01-14
excellent live recording of this band in its prime sound quality very good for live very little overdubing song selection and sequence is excellent giving the live power and energy this quartet posessed one of my hall of fame cd's
