5 out of 5 stars I don't wanna be mistreated by no bourgeoisie..........2006-05-07

Lead Belly's thick and juicy 12-string guitar and soaring vocals kept belting out originals and classics right up until his death in 1949. In and out of prison from 1918 to 1934, he built up a vast repertoire that greatly impressed musicologist Alan Lomax. But after recording in the 1930s in New York City, he again found himself in prison from 1939 to 1940. None of those recordings found any commercial success. Then in the 1940s he began to record for Moses Asch. This disc, the second volume of a three volume series, preserves highlights of these recordings. They were all made in the last decade of Lead Belly's life. And though the money never poured in his reputation exploded as he played numerous shows in venues and in his apartment in New York City. His solid standing gets confirmed by Woody Guthrie's 1946 laudatory essay included in the CD booklet.

This collection includes some of Lead Belly's best known songs. "Fanning Street", named after a wild and dangerous street in Louisiana from Lead Belly's youth, starts off the collection with a bang. The hypnotic guitar playing alone leaves the brain mesmerized. Unfortunately, the spoken (and musical) introduction was cut, which leaves the song sounding a little truncated in this context (see "A Vision Shared" for the complete version). And "Bourgeois Blues" remains one of Lead Belly's signature songs. "This is the home of the brave, land of the free / I don't wanna be mistreated by no bourgeoisie". The rollicking "Gallis Pole" tells the story of a man facing the gallows. His father and mother bring silver and gold to "keep me from the gallis pole". But his "so called friend" just stops by to "see you hanging from the gallis pole". In the 1970s Led Zeppelin (on "Led Zeppelin III") recorded a version of this song in which the mother and father confess that they're too poor to bring silver and gold. Lead Belly helped popularize this song that had pervaded the folk scene for decades. "Midnight Special", also popularized by Lead Belly, was covered by Creedence Clearwater Revival in the 1960s. It was supposedly sung in prisons all over the south in the 1930s as a hymm of freedom. "Jim Crow Blues" (named after the infamous minstrel show performer) recounts experiences with racism in early and mid twentieth century america. Most telling is the line "it's a lot of Jim Crow in a moving picture show". Lead Belly once had moved to California to pursue a movie career, but felt shafted by the racism prevalent in the industry. And "Haul Away Joe" transforms an Irish sea shanty into a hanuting southern work song.

The multitudinous topics and melodies on this disc pay homage to Lead Belly's true breadth as a performer. It includes songs about racism, Hitler, Abe Lincoln, tuberculosis ("T.B. Blues"), love gone bad ("Leavin' Blues", "Careless Love", "Don't You Love Your Daddy No More?"), songs for children ("Skip To My Lou" and "Red Bird"), a capella work songs ("Linin' Track"), songs about legends ("John Henry" and "John Hardy"), travel ("Alabama Bound"), and countless other themes. Lead Belly's deep and powerful voice emanates inexorably on every track. And his guitar playing remains nearly astonishing throughout.

The sound quality does reflect the era before magnetic tape found wide use. Many of these recordings come from glass or aluminum acetates, some of which have dilapidated. But the quality never dips below unacceptable (see the "Archivist's Remarks" in the CD booklet for some fascinating history). Most of the songs ring very clear considering their some sixty years of age.

This collection picks up right where the first volume "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" leaves off. It provides futher testament as to why Lead Belly remains one of the most influential performers of the twentieth century.

The story....

I recently purchased my wife an "i-pod". Which is worthless until you upload music to it. I than spent painless hours (with the help of hand-crafted micro-brews) uploading music from our collection to give this new innovation value. I used amazon.com as a source for album graphics to compliment the track listings for the cd downloads. I thought I was basically putting (uploads/downloads) the essentials or basics on my wife "i-pod". I must say... I was quite disappointed to discovery during this process that only a handful of reviews were posted for this album. WAKE-UP WORLD... Huddie Ledbetter... alias "Lead Belly" is a "must" for those who write music, poems, stories, music, or simply enjoy playing a guitar or musical instruments! I hope that my comments inspire someone to listen to LEADBELLY. thanks... an arctic Alaskan!!!

5 out of 5 stars 2nd of 3 in Smithsonian's Lead Belly Legacy series.......2000-11-11

(72') This is the second of three volumes in the Smithsonian's Lead Belly series, probably the best set for just listening to Lead Belly play and sing. All three CDs are taken from Moses Asch's original studio masters (as opposed to most other available compilations on reprint labels, which are made from secondary sources); the other two are Vol. 1 "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" SF40044 (67'), and Vol. 3 "Shout On" SF40105 (70'). As usual, the Smithsonian provides extensive and authoritative notes.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Blues, Essential Lead Belly.......1998-08-24

I picked this up because I was looking for a nice cheap CD with alot of tracks. I had one Lead Belly CD already, but I wanted more. This won't disappoint. Traditional songs like Midnight Special and Gallis Pole are wonderful. Lead Belly's style is revolutionary, and his voice thunders like the trains immortalized by blues artists all over the Delta. It's so full of soul and feeling it stirs emotions. Muddy Waters said you have to have the blues to play the blues, and this recording shows that to be true, but Lead Belly also has a softer, playful side to his music, shown in the tracks Skip to My Lou and Red Bird. I once read something that all the kids would dance when a Lead Belly record was put on, and the question is, how could you not?

5 out of 5 stars A Fresh Fusion of Flavors.......2001-07-07

This album uses many different musical styles to create great songs (not jams). Willis blends bits of rock, folk, groove, and blues, resulting in a uniquely exciting sound that makes you want to get up and move (in a Dave Mathews kind of way. The highlights of the CD are clearly tracks 1,2 and 4. However, the other two tracks illustrate Willis' diversity and songwriting ability. The influences are varied, but there is evidence of Paul Simon (in a modern rockier form). Check this CD out and their forthcoming full length CD due out July 17th (Gravelled and Gray).

5 out of 5 stars a fusion of sound and delight.......2001-07-07

This album is great illustration of how different musical styles can be melded together to make good SONGS (not jams). The highlights are clearly tracks 1.2.and 4 (also to be featured on their upcoming full length disc), but the whole disc is solid. There are pinches of folk, rock, groove, and blues throughout. The end product makes you want to get up and move (in a dave mathews kind of way). Their next disc will truly be a great one (due out July 17, 2001).

5 out of 5 stars Just wait, just wait.............2001-03-07

Willis is perhaps the most promising band currently on the ever bubbling and changing Seattle music scene. They released a self titled album a few years back that introduced those besides their college based fan group to their unique style of music. Over the past couple of years, they have matured and polished their sound into what is heard here on this album. But if you like what you hear on "Bourgeois Blues," just wait, just wait. I have not only heard them many a time in concert, but I have also gotten a hold of an industry only release that they sent out to record companies that features many of the songs from the upcoming album. Like I said, if you like this, then just wait, becuase you will be blown away by what is to come. Every song just has that feeling, they just make you smile and want to get up and dance, and to sing along at the top of your lungs. So keep your eyes and ears open for these guys, you can check out the website at willisband.com.

5 out of 5 stars Leaves you wanting more!.......2001-02-15

I first heard of Willis when their song "Standing By" appeared on the soundtrack to the movie Never Been Kissed. Inspired, I bought Bourgeois Blues hoping to hear something similar. What I got was something slightly different but a whole lot better! This CD deserves more than 5 stars. It's full of more melodic hooks and lyrical trickery than you can shake a stick at. The influences seem to range from The Beatles to Paul Simon and the style is like light rock with a slight country-feel and at some points leaning toward reggae-type rhythm. Tim Seely, the lead singer strikes me as very much a singer-songwriter with songs like "Truckers' Lullaby". The lyrics are colorful but you may need to break out the dictionary to extract any meaning from the title track. It is a very diverse album as there is a broad spectrum of moods from the upbeat "Bad Day" to the slow-moving "Sunshot Vistas". This band is very different from anything you've heard before therefore it is hard to put your finger on which genre they would fall under. I definitely look forward to their next album...

5 out of 5 stars Willis DOES play the rock music!.......2000-11-28

Willis is without a doubt the best band I've heard in a long time. While this EP is musically divergent from their self-titled cd, it still shows their unique flavor. The reason this EP was released was to whet the pallates of Willis fans until their full-length cd comes out. Well, it MORE than does that. And if the next cd is anything like this one, bring it on!

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars 1st of 2 CDs in Leadbelly Golden Classics series.......2000-11-12

(28') Taken from expertly reprocessed and cleaned-up 78s, this is a fine selection of Lead Belly guitar/vocal solos, with very acceptable sound. However, all 13 tracks given here are duplicated on either "Vols. 1 & 2" COL5603 (52') or "Vols. 3 & 4" COL5604 (54') of Collectables' Lead Belly Memorial" 2-CD series, which is a much better buy. All these tracks were originally recorded by Moses Asch in his studio, and his pressings went to Stinson Records as a result of Asch's Folkways bankruptcy; however, Asch's masters are now at the Smithsonian, which has produced its own "Lead Belly Legacy" series of CDs.

Also note that on Golden Classics Part 2 "Defense Blues" COL5196 (24') four of the ten tracks are duplicated in Collectables' "Memorial" series, but six are unique; the sound quality of that CD is very poor. These 6 unique tracks appear not to be Asch recordings, but I haven't tried to verify this.

        1 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2000-09-30

This compilation does not contain titles of real hit movies. It contains mostly sentimental or comic songs from old movies and even from the ones I managed to recognise only a handful were original. It struck me hard to find "Enae Volare" from "Les Visiteurs", the only title I ordered this compilation for, terribly altered but that might concern me alone. Finding "What a Feeling" from "Flashdance" similarly altered made me wonder... later, on the back of the box, I found a small note saying, as I could decrypt from French, that the songs in the album were not necessary original. I should've been warned about this in advance!
