The Flashcubes originally formed in Syracuse, NY in 1977, inspired by the heady rush of punk rock and by their mutual love of great rock 'n' roll, from Eddie Cochran through Big Star, The Sex Pistols and beyond. They wrote a lot of terrific songs, played a lot of sweaty, transcendent gigs, and released two singles in their aggressive bid for stardom. In the minds of The Flashcubes' fans, there was never any doubt that this band was gonna be huge. But it was not to be, and The Flashcubes broke up in 1980, their promise unfulfilled.

But even as The Flashcubes seemed destined to fade away, their legend grew. By the early '90s, more people had heard of The Flashcubes than had ever actually heard them. When Rhino Records included their first single, "Christi Girl," on a power pop retrospective called Come Out And Play, The Flashcubes themselves decided it was time to live up to their legend by hitting the road, and gaining an ever-increasing new bloc of eager fans via incendiary live appearances in New York City, Boston, Los Angeles, and even Japan, where The Flashcubes were treated like stars.

That point is made with Brilliant, the first real studio album of The Flashcubes' long, brilliant career. Bursting with 12 new original Flashcubes tunes, Brilliant makes the case that not only were The Flashcubes one of the greatest rock 'n' roll groups to make the scene in the late '70s, they're still one of the very best around. Excellent Bach Collection.......2007-07-05

I am a professional musician, composer and teacher. this collection is wonderful, recorded in Europe, and all that one would expect from talent in that part of the world (which on this set includes Nordic countries as well).
If you are into studying bach, euro recordings, musicology, this is a good purchase.
Only criticism is on a few recordings the balance/mix is not the best. However, it all sounds wonderfully recorded.

One reason to buy this set is simply to acquire recordings of all Bach's surviving Cantatas. The only downside I've discovered so far is that I would have preferred his harpsichord music played on a piano.

An Absolute Essential for any Classical Music Enthusiast.......2007-05-22

This comprehensive collection of all known Bach works is simultaneously the easiest and the most difficult set to review. "Easiest" because in a single set of some 150 CD's, one immediately has the entire Bach repertoire at one's hands, with the majority of individual recordings consisting of solid performances and good recording quality. "Difficult" because, due to the sheer number of performances, it would take many pages to individually and meaningfully write up a description that accurately conveys the range of entries within the set. But in a sense, this entirely misses the point. It is simply impossible to understate what Brilliant Classics has done for the classical music world with the release of a set like this. For the first time, one can own a comprehensive Bach collection for little more than the price of a single, good restaurant meal for two people. The fact can hardly be overstated: this set makes acquiring such a collection no longer the domain of only the wealthiest amongst us. This is most certainly the "democratization" of classical baroque music.

Over the years, I have certainly spent what often feels like exorbitant amounts of money on individual, and sometimes, box sets, of classical music. There is no denying the human skill possessed at the major recording labels, including experiential knowledge of the proper placement of microphones, the best mixing techniques, the optimal types of equipment selected for use, and then, of course, access to the world's greatest performers. We would never wish to lose that combination of talent, and there is no attempt here at minimizing either the value or the enjoyment that can be experienced through such endeavors. Quite the contrary. Such undertakings are both an art form and a technical skill that provides immense value to the world at large. And we should give kudos to those major labels who in recent years have begun to reissue classic records in box sets at much lower prices (Detusche Grammophon's "Collector's Editions" immediately comes to mind, as well as Philip's "Duo Series," and many others, not the least of which also includes Philip's recent reissue of the "Complete Mozart Edition.") But what we have here completely surpasses these in every respect, and opens up new possibilities for the average listener who does not have mountains of disposable income to put towards the acquisition of a classical music collection. There can be no question in my own mind that the people who put this set together did it far more for the sake of classical music as an art form rather than a money-making exercise. It is truly a meaningful contribution to the music world at large.

And what of the quality of the performances and the recordings? For the discs which I have already played, there are simply no real disappointments here. Some of the performances are on par with the "best of the best," and many of them are absolutely gorgeous. With a set this large, it is beneficial to read the multiple reviews individuals are posting to get a better sampling of the various sections of the overall set, but I've been quite pleased with what I've heard so far. I will likely update this post with more specific comments over time, but for now, let me just say that you should BUY THE THING BEFORE IT DISAPPEARS. You won't regret it, will probably be increasingly pleased over the years that you did, and hopefully will receive many years of enjoyment from the collection. Ten stars out of five, but even more important than that, a genuine "Thank you" to Brilliant Classics for what they have done for all of us here.

What the word "aesthetic" means!.......2007-05-14

On the grand work of this box set, I perceive what the adjective, asethetic, means. Besides excellent performance, I was especially attracted by the tone quality. (of course made by bravo performance, and the recording that I wish to make it noticeable!). The tone quality also reflects the quality of this box set.
Listening to violin concerto, you will naturally vision the orchestra playing in the concert hall. It's the real relaxation after tensely working one day!

Dispite what anyone else says, if god ever tried to talk to humanity it was through Wolfgang because his music is absolute perfection.It is the most beautiful music i've ever heard in my life( and this is coming from a 21 year old metal-head ).If one has second thoughts about buying this collection dispell them right now because this is probably the first item i've bought in a long time that i have not regreted.

Brilliant Classics Complete Mozart edition, released for the 250th anniversary year of Mozart's birth (he was born in 1756), has much to recommend it. It contains almost all the works of Mozart, and has many fine performances: the piano sonatas by Klara Wurtz, Piano Concertos by Derek Han, Paul Freeman/Philharmonia, The Magic Flute, conducted by Charles Mackerras (licensed from Telarc), String Quartets by the Franz Schubert Quartet (Licensed from Nimbus) each stand out. The Symphonies, by the Amsterdam Mozart Academy/ Jaap ter Linden, are "So-so": I don't like the small period ensemble, but Symphonies 20, 40 (both versions: one with clarinets and the other without), 23, 24, and 34 are pretty good. Symphonies 1:I, 25 and 41 are sub-par: scrappy playing and weak violins make for a pretty rough experience. I would supplement this with the complete Mozart Symphonies by Karl Bohm/Berlin Philharmonic (DG), among the best recordings of these works, and the best complete set of Mozart's Symphonies, completed in 1968.

The Requiem, conducted by Nicol Matt (2001 recording) has had better performances, and for this I would recommend Bohm/Vienna Philharmonic (DG) and Colin Davis/London Symphony (Philips), which use a larger choir and orchestra, and have more drama where it is needed. The other choral works conducted by Nicol Matt are better, especially "Exsultate Jubilate" motet, the short Masses, and "Ave Verum".

Also worthy of mention are the "Posthorn" and "Haffner" Serenades, by Colin Davis/Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, licensed from Novalis for this release.

This is a great overview, and Brilliant Classics are to be commended for making it available at a low price, to get Mozart's music out to the mass public. It's a great buy, but I would get the Bohm Symphonies, and also Piano Concertos by either Ashkenazy/Philharmonia (Decca), Perahia/English Chamber Orchestra (Sony) or Anda/Mozarteum Orchestra of Salzburg (DG) for supplements. Also, Karl Bohm's recordings of the operas: The Magic Flute, the Marriage of Figaro, Idomeneo, and La Clemenza di Tito (all DG) are required listening, too. Recommended, but not as the only recording of Mozart's works.

As others have reviewed the product and highlighted that there are a few poor pieces... But who cares when there is 170 discs.. if you had have 10 cds that are poor quality and had a 160 disc set of good cd's and you paid $90 for the set.. would you be happy? I would think so... So don't get frustrated and just buy the set.. Enjoy the music for the price.. I am not going to go into details like others did but just buy the set!

Incredible Bargain.......2007-06-10

This offer is an incredible bargain at just over 50 cents a CD. The price jumps around often - you can sometimes get it for $4 or $5 less. but still at 50 cents. Mine arrived in excellent shape - it's hard for them to do otherwise. The way they are packaged they are either in good shape or some major disaster has happened destroying a whole bunch. Those I have played sound great. It will probably take a life time to play them all. Meanwhile we can just revel in our riches and feel all warm and fuzzy.
I also own the Bach set and am wildly happy with that as well.

Brand New have specialized in pain ever since the pop-punk emo-rage of their 2001 debut release Your Favorite Weapon. But they've outdone themselves on The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me. If the songs on Weapon were paper cuts, the ones here are gaping chainsaw wounds, full of seismic, howling agony. The moody rumbles of 2003's Deja Entendu were pointing here, but this is something else, with Mogwai-level dynamic range and tracks that careen from introspection to fury and back again. Lyrically, lead singer Jesse Lacey's words remain excruciating and harrowing things, but that's nothing new. It's the music propping them up which gives this effort such depth and punch. "Degausser" starts so innocently, then uses a bridge augmented with a bitter children's chorus straight out of The Wall as a lead in to Lacey's bitter refrain of "I'll never say anything right." Then there's the nearly 8-minute "Limousine (MS Rebridge)," epic, and epically sad, constantly threatening to descend into pure cacophony (and eventually succeeding). Repeated listens will tune your ear to the band's still-intact pop sense (especially on "Not the Sun" and "The Archers Bows Have Broken"), which keeps the record lively and unpredictable, and away from becoming a depressing, head-in-the-oven mope. Brand New went through three years of intense recording sessions to make it happen, but it was worth the effort. --Matthew Cooke

This album takes off in a different direction from Deja Entandu, Its full of emotion and power like their last album but with more screaming. An awesome album, Brand New continues to refine their sound and have come a long way from Your Favorite Weapon

Better than ever.......2007-05-28

I've been a Brand New fan for a long time, and this album has only increased my love for such an innovative, talented band. Many bands change their styles to please more people to become more famous, but Brand New has not done this. Instead, they continue to grow in their own style and grow in popularity anyway. This album includes Jesse's thought-provoking lyrics, awesome guitar parts, and meaningful melodies and harmonies fans have come to expect. This is the best album I have ever heard, and I cannot stop listening to it. They have grown so much, especially in diversity of their songs. This album is perfect in every way! BUY IT!

The Best Album I Never Heard in 2006!.......2007-05-16

The year 2006 had come to a close and I had not heard this album. Usually at the end of every year I compile a list of the Top20 albums I've heard in the year. I missed one and I cannot forgive myself! This albums continues through and through with the main theme, "good vs. evil" and it works on almost every track. It is one of the albums I just can't put too far away from my cdplayer. I've loaded up some songs on my iPod, including the 2007 single, "Jesus Christ". "Brand New" was problably the most under-rated artiste of 2006.

One of my favorite bands.......2007-05-09

I have both of their best albums and I listen to them both front to back weekly, they are both always found in my disc-changer in my truck. Track 3 is my favorite on this Album.

My Favorite Album Ever.......2007-05-05

All in all, a genius, unique, and great album.
1. Sowing Season - Great song, great guitar riff, and it just punches you right in the face...in a good way. Yeah.
2. Millstone - Awesome sounding vocal harmony at the beginning. Cool chorus, especially the cool backup vocal track. A very nifty drum tom outro.
3. Jesus Christ - Jesus Christ I love this song. The ending gives me a chill every time, the way Jesse sing/screams that is amazing. I don't like screaming, but Jesse makes it sound like a mixture of singing and screaming and I love it love it love it. It was definitely my favorite when I first heard the CD, though not any more, read on.
4. Degausser - This song gives you a crazy feeling...it's very dark sounding in my opinion, and the first time the ensemble of Jesses sang "Take apart your head" it kind of startled me. Great song though, awesome awesome awesome outro...lyrically and musically.
5. Limousine - I didn't like this one at first, but it grew on me very much. Starts out very quiet and then kicks into crunchy sounding vocals (only way I can think to describe it). And my favorite part - the resolution from the crunchiness (which isn't bad, by the way..just crunchy) to the beautiful cleanness. When it switches it gives me chills. I also thought the end where he repeats "I love you so much..etc." many many times was too long...but then I listened some more and realized it was extremely cool, because it's a slow slow slow crescendo that you hardly notice. Great song.
6. You Won't Know - Ah I love it. Starts with an extremely quiet intro. Then BOOM...another punch in the face with those scream/sing vocals. My god, I love this song. Such energy and so great great great sounding.
7. Welcome to Bangkok - This one is an instrumental. It's pretty cool, I guess...but I usually skip it. It's cool though, cool guitar work. I saw them live recently on tour with 2 other bands, and both bands came out for this song and were just hitting cymbals, drums, and throwing drums. It was very cool seeing 14 people on stage playing drums and guitars...so basically it's awesome live, but just slightly above average on the album
8. Not The Sun - Tied with You Won't Know for my favorite song on the album. So very cool. From the catchy bassline to the (old)Michael Jackson-like vocals in the verse to the vocal slides in the chorus, it just excels so much. I think my favorite thing about the song is the use of the snare drum in it. I can't explain that though...just know that it's great. Great lyrics too, as is the case with just about every Brand New song. So clever and so meaningful.
9. Luca - The first half or so of this song is acoustic, where Jesse shows us his ability to jump pitches beautifully. I would tell you the highlight of the song, but I feel like I'd be spoiling it, so I won't. Listen to it loud though, but don't try to go to sleep to it, trust me.
10. Untitled - I can't say I understand the point of putting this song on the CD to be honest. It's instrumental, and has the same average guitar part through the whole thing. I assume the weird talking in the background has some kind of meaning, but I've yet to figure it out. I skip it, sorry Brand New.
11. The Archers' Bows Are Broken - Back to the greatness. Not much to say about this one other than that it's quite catchy, and quite good. I absolutely love the lyrics as well.
12. Handcuffs - I'm pretty undecided on this one. Musically, I like it...but I can't seem to get past the lyrics. It's not that they're bad, they just sound wrong to me. Hard to explain. But I've gotten used to it and now sing along.
13. Luca (Acoustic) - Some of the versions of the CD come with this song. It's an acoustic version of Luca. Some different lyrics, and no electric guitars or drums throughout most of the song. Enjoyable, of course, though I prefer the regular version.

This is my favorite album ever. While there are some albums where I enjoy every song on the album and skip none, this one has a few skip-worthy ones...yet somehow it hits me as the best album I've ever heard. Get it, trust me. Don't expect Deja Entendu and DEFINITELY don't expect Your Favorite Weapon. I love both, and I love this one. This band evolves so fast, it's ridiculous. They go from good to great to amazing and they put on the best live show I've seen.

A member of the band Heatmiser, Elliot Smith recorded home demos on any equipment he could get his hands on. His first "solo" album is a cheap four-track home recording that hints at the melodic possibilities Smith would explore in greater detail on subsequent releases. The title track is remarkable but with four songs referred to in sequential order as "No Name #1," "No Name #2," etc. ... the inspiration isn't always fully firing. Blessed with a quiet angelic voice and a lyrical mind that easily transforms the squalid details of everyday life into something worth hearing about twice, Smith stood on the verge of getting it on. Great Album.......2007-04-17

This maybe my favorite Elliott Smith album next to Either/Or. I would purchase this album with Either/Or if I were just getting into Elliott Smith. It is a very chill album to listen to while driving at night, doing homework, or going to sleep. Elliott's acoustic guitar playing and lyrics are very well arranged. Give it a glance.

i bought this cd completely on a whim at a local cd store. it took a few listens for certain songs to really sink in, but now i absolutely love it. No Name #3 and Condor Avenue are worth the price tag alone

A glimpse inside the audio diary of Elliot Smith.......2007-03-05

This unpretentious cd is sparse and mysterious as was the late recording artist himself, who died under mysterious circumstances shortly after receiving critical acclaim. I think it is the best representation of Smith, who has other more polished cd's that seem to have somehow missed his essence. This one seems to have been recorded early on, low-fi in a basement or bedroom, and lets you get up close to him without studio intervention. There are many tracks that don't even have bass or drums, just guitars and voice. The tunes are haunting and insecure, but will soon get right under your skin. This is no high-gloss commercial venture, but more like a glimpse inside somebody's audio diary.

Roman Candle has a very endearing adolescence to it much softer than Elliott's later work. An innocent recording of someone's youth.

Smith's Genius.......2006-07-09

Elliot Smith has never written anything but beautiful, listenable music and this first release is no exception. His fan base should only grow. He was a genius.

Great Packaging! Great Remastering As Well!.......2006-10-02

This along with "Criss-Cross" have been roundly acknowledged as among the best the Monk has ever done. Considering he had recorded dozens of albums, that's no small praise either. This version of the classic album is a work of art in itself. The mini-lp sleeve replica is very well done and it reproduces very faithfully the cover art on the original lp release. In addition, all the tracks have been very well digitally remastered so that the sound quality is really very, very good. This is by far the best version of this album that is currently out there.

Recommended for all fans of Monk and of great jazz in general.

Rightly praised classic, however at times lacking Monk's signature.......2006-05-15

This is one of those ominous recordings that manages to somehow steal the spotlight away from some of the more in depth work of the artist due to this album's attempt at "getting everything right". Don't ask me to explain what that means, all I know is that there are many albums that achieve legendary status due to their pitch perfect recipe that delivers all of the prescribed ingrediants in the right order. Somehow that formula for sucess yielded many jazz classics, but overshadowed more personal, detailed work. This applies to most artists then, and as a general forwarning into gageing many composer's true strengths when it comes to buying most recommended titles. They are often ideal first purchases when discovering someone, but usually misleading as well.
This album itself is perhaps 1/2 dominated by the man of the hour, giving way to yes..some brilliant corners. There are some amazing musical concepts going on brought on undoubtedly by a total collaboration at times with some pretty free form plotting by all players. As exciting as some of the swingin tunes can be, the problem of overshadowing genius cannot be remedied when tunes like "I surrender Dear" are played, the depth of that writing on display towers over the majority of the disc's mood of playfullness. Nonetheless, this is one of his more popular albums for a reason, each track on this album has stood the test of time and will continue to represent such a special hybrid of piano induced, frenzied yet organized beauty in it's 5 eclectic compositions that go everywhere from avant garde to ballad to bee bop to solo.

brilliant, yes mahn.......2006-03-11

This is a fantastic monk recording, because there is so much soul in the tracks. Monk's unorthodox style is interpreted well by all the other players as is immediately evident on the first track. The tempo shifts continually and the song takes on a completely eccentric life of its own. Rollin's sax solo about 4 minutes into the track has a playful, whimsical, blues feel and roache's drum play is among the best i have ever heard on any jazz track, the way he shifts tempo during his solo is wonderfully energizing. The intros and exits to both the first two tracks will hang in your head for the rest of the day. Henry and rollins simultaneous play during these periods suggests a light-hearted, take-it-as-it-comes approach to life. The bass solos are equally playful, like the one on "Ba-lue..." From head to toe the musicians surrounding monk do a fantastic job assuming his style and create a recording that is the epitome of monk.

As far as monk's play, i am partial to his solo about 4 and 1/2 minutes into track two. It sums up the feel of the entire album: cool, playful and confident. Monk's choice of celeste-play on "pannonica" is another deviation from tradition that hangs a mystical mood around a somewhat earthy track that couldn't be done without it. I am also a big fan of monk's classical style and track four is rich and romantic.

This disc is a wonderful way of looking at the world that has never been done quite the same. It is an optimistic recording that you will leave in a good mood after hearing it...every time. "Brilliant corners" is one of those recordings that makes you thank fate that monk and the all-star cast that joined him created it and you happened to hear it after the session became history.

Pannonica.......2005-08-09

From the wonderful documentary "Straight, No Chaser", we know that the Baroness Pannonica de Koenigswarter was born a Rothschild, flew bombers during WWII in de Gaulle's resistance, then came to New York and became one of the foremost patrons of jazz, close friends with Parker, Thelonious, and countless others. Complex lady. Complex tune as well, and one of Monk's most beautiful.
This record was Monk's third for Riverside, but the first to feature his compositions. The title track "Brilliant Corners" is notorious for its strangeness of melody and its doubling of tempo. But the highlight of the record is the ballad "Pannonica", for two reasons... first, Monk doubling on the celeste. I think it must be the only time he ever played another instrument on record, let alone two instruments at once, but he must've been aiming for an ethereal quality for this recording and achieves it in his intro and in his solo, where he alternates between celeste and piano. And second... Sonny Rollins. This was made during Sonny's high point, around the time of "Saxophone Colossus", and I think it is probably his strongest ballad solo, and the strongest saxophone solo anyone has played behind Monk, past Rouse and Johnny Griffin and even Coltrane. As great as Rouse is, whenever he is playing the tune, you can hear him get caught up in the trickiness of the bridge, and he invariably runs back to the theme for safety. Sonny, during his solo, has truly possessed and internalized Monk's composition, and brings all of his astonshing self to the solo. Doesn't falter once. And listen towards the end when he throws in those five consecutive ascending glissandos. Then listen to Monk affectionately duplicate them when he gets into his solo. Then listen to some of the other recordings of "Pannonica" over the next 15 years and you'll hear Monk working this phrase in again. A small, wonderful exchange between two artists. The rest of the tunes on "Brilliant Corners" are great, but "Pannonica" is one of those rare ones that is itself worth the price of admission. One can only wish that Monk and Rollins had played and recorded more together-- then I think there would be no question of Monk's supremacy in modern jazz or of Sonny's supremacy on the tenor saxophone.

Which Monk Cd should I choose ?.......2004-12-30

That is one of life's more difficult questions because the more you listen to Monk the more you hear. Certainly that is true on this Cd. It ranks as one of my favorites because the music is so unpredictable and the musicians that are on this particular Monk recording do an amazing job interpreting Monk's compositions. Every cut is different and each has something that just blows me away every time I hear it. Pannonica , the 3rd track is one of Monk's more understated and underrated tunes. His piano playing on that number can only be descibed as sweet. The Blues turnarounds on Bal-Lue Bolivar with Monk and Sonny Rollins are knock-outs and Monk's version of I Surrender Dear is especially unique.
I would be remiss not to mention Max Roach's drumming on this entire cd is fantastic but he particularly shines on Bemsha Swing. Then the icing on the cake is a beautiful trumpet solo on that cut by Clark Terry.
This is certainly one of Monk's finest recordings and on certain nights it is my all-time favorite. Don't miss it.

Classic Seventies Music.......2006-11-27

Lobo is one of those talented artists from the Seventies that everyone has heard of, but can't place. His most famous hit was, "Me And You And A Dog Named Boo", a number one hit with a romantic breezy feel with simple chords and lyrics. "I'd Love You To Want Me" was also a big number with Robert Johnson guesting as back-up falsetto vocalist.

The rest of the album is a smart selection of love songs and low key poetic verses of the typical Top 40 genre, but presented extremely well. "A Simple Man" is masterful in it's mood and contains Lobo's earmarked guitar work.

If you like one of the songs on this collection, you'll like them all. It's first rate seventies pop.

Very Best Of Lobo by Lobo.......2006-02-18

This is a trluy JEWEL from this extraorinary super talented singer-song writer. My surprsie is that all the tracks are brand new versions! & they are beautifully done, with his mastery of being such a simple man doing great loving mellow music with a very high quality (unlike todays noise makings). He actually sat down with his great team & played music again! My very favorites along with his great hits are Stoney, Faithful, Don't tell me goodnight & of course Me & You & a Dog Named Boo wich sounds a little diferent (like all tracks) but always spectacular. Where are you Lobo? We need you back,, wherever you are, God Bless you & have you in good health. We Love you & never forget you, We long for you. Definitely a more than 5 star rated album & musician.-

Keep em' coming Lobo........2005-12-27

The Best Of Lobo CD is a great edition to any fan of Lobo collection. The Very Best Of Lobo has the best from his early (tracks 1-10) years such as....Me And You And A Dog Named Boo and A Simple Man, to current recordings(11-18) such as...Dream Lover and The End Of The World. Two favorites of the newer recordings, Yellow River and Back Bay are really the standouts on this disc. A very soothing singing voice that's not raspy or whiney. With a great backup band to match. A very under-rated singer/songwriter Lobo is still one of the best!

Two classics and other great songs.......2005-03-16

Born Kent Lavoie, Lobo had three American top ten hits, these being Me and you and a dog named Boo (a novelty song, but brilliantly done), I'd love you to want me (a song he offered to the Hollies before deciding to release his own version after they wanted to change it and take half the songwriting royalties) and Don't expect me to be your friend. The first two of these were also huge hits in Britain. He had several other lesser American hits, but no more UK hits.

On this compilation you will find Lobo's big hits, some of his other great songs and his covers of the classic songs It doesn't matter anymore (Buddy Holly), End of the world (Skeeter Davis), Dream lover (Bobby Darin), Will you still love me tomorrow (Shirelles) and Let it be me (Everly brothers).

Lobo's style could variously be described as soft rock or folk-pop. Actually it was a mix of all these elements. If you like Bread, but you'd like something a bit folksier, Lobo may be just what you're looking for.

Missing Rings.......2004-05-18

This is a great compilation with one MAJOR flaw: it does not include one of my favorite Lobo songs of all time "Rings." If you are looking for a greatest hits with Rings, the only one to get is the Rhino collection. I wish I had paid more attention when ordering this disc. I am very disappointed that Rings is missing. :(

An Amazing HIM CD.......2007-05-29

Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights has got to be one of the best HIM CD's.Everything from the lyrics to the amazing vocals to the music, HIM have out done themselves. This is definately a CD that you can put on and listen to over and over again. It is a must have!!!!

It all went downhill from this one on........2007-03-18

Ah yes, HIM started to go downhill after and with this one. This one I acquired after getting Razorblade Romance, Love Metal and Greatest Lovesongs, and I was quite surprised that I hadn't ever heard of this one. I got it, rushed home to listen to it, and I did, and I have been revisiting that horrid memory every time I listen to those few songs I liked in this one.

"Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights" marks the beginning of HIM's descent into mellower, less moody, wasted-potential music, which they later described as "love metal" when it had lost all connection with what it used to be. This album also marks the start of "Ten Songs Per Album" rule of HIM, guaranteeing what will most likely be a short and catastrophic listen.

"Heartache Every Moment", "Pretending", "Love You Like I Do". That's it. The rest of the album sounds like it has been taken out of some dreamy pop album with electric guitar and overall too much acoustic and cheery melodies, complete with all songs regarding love or loss thereof, as usual, however, without the edge they delivered in Greatest Lovesongs and Razorblade Romance.

This album takes a lot of getting used to, simply because it takes for you to get used to the idea HIM could have gotten this dreamy and cheerful. Like I said, after this, the band went downhill, with the brief interruption of "Love Metal".

I loved every song, especially 'Dont Close You Heart' which was a breath of fresh air, 'Beautiful', 'Prentending' and 'Close to the Flame'. It was an amazing album and i adore it no doubt!!

I was not one of their best, but I loved it anyways. To any HIM fan buy it and enjoy it. Its worth the buy!!!

Deep Shadows & Brilliant Highlights.......2006-06-20

Have you been properly introduced to H.I.M. yet? What are you waiting for?! This album, IMO, is the best album to get acquainted with their music. This album is kick a** from the door...not one bad song on it. This album solidified my commitment as now being forever a fan. You don't have to be GOTH to like this music. It is straight up melodic rock with catchy choruses and harmonies. The lyrics this guy writes will blow you mind. It captures you like nothing else could in music today. The sound of this band is what has been missing with the rock world for many years now. BUY IT PEOPLE!!

I'm not a music expert.......2005-08-25

I don't know too much about music. I own over 700 cds, but I don't play music and I don't have much experience with this music. My only point of reference was the ninth symphony, seeing as every other piece in this box set was new to me. It sounds fine, nothing wrong with it as far as I can see.

Now, here's what you'll get in this box set, seeing as Amazon does not give it a description. 40 cds! no joke, you get 40 cds in this box set. It features:

Exceptional performances.......2007-05-11

This bargain set from Brilliant Classics features a legendary recording session: Arthur Grumiaux and Clara Haskil performing the complete Beethoven violin sonatas.

These sessions where originally recorded (in mono) and released by Philips in 1956/57, and it has been available on CD from that label before (nla). But a new release on CD has recently been announced from Decca Music Group (to which Philips records now belongs). However, the present incarnation is a fine opportunity to grab these classic performances at a bargain price.

The performances are impeccable - Grumiaux and Haskil are both in top form, and together they are an ideal match: Grumiaux' glowing tone and masterly understanding combined with Haskil's sensitive brilliance.

Now, of course, we find this set in a crowded field with many excellent, classic recordings, for example Ashkenazy/Perlman on Decca, Oistrakh/Oborin on Philips, and Schneiderhan/Kempff on DG. Collectors may need all these classic sets (and possibly some other sets as well). But the classic Haskil/Grumiaux set is a serious contender to any, with most enjoyable and moving performances at a bargain price.

Highly recommended!

If you are a fan at all of the Four Seasons you should love this music. I will admit right now that I am a classical music fan. I don't write or perform it. I am a novice listener. I have never taken any music lessons(though I am leaning in that direction) and certainly have not gone through any university music training. I started out in rock and roll but found classical as I got older and fell in love with it a few years ago.

With that context in mind I do hope I am able to recognize quality and this work is of the highest. It helps when you are starting with good ingredients in the first place. You can't bake great bread without great ingredients and Vivaldi's music library has some of the greatest musical ingredients of the last 300 years. The first 26 CDs are instrumental starting with the four seasons and working through many of the Master's many popular works. I will admit the four seasons are not the best interpretation I have heard but it is definitely acceptable. The rest of the music shows us many facets of the Baroque style and you can see themes emerging through some of the pieces that give us a 'fingerprint' of Vivaldi's style and the parameters of the stylistic leanings of the genre at the time. If you want to immerse yourself in 18th century music this is your chance

This music would be ideal for someone who owns a store and is looking for background music. With over 26 CDs of instrumental music alone you could have those constantly looping and you'd probably never get bored of them(OK I may be stretching it a little there). The reason is that the music does not leave a bad 'aftertaste' in your mind. It fits into the background as easily and naturally as it is to listen to it consciously in the foreground. If you are a fan of classical Baroque you don't usually need to be in the mood for this, it will adjust your mood to itself and Vivaldi's music is almost always of an uplifting sort if this collection is any indication. If you want something to listen to at your job 8 hours per day this is good for the mind and it would take you over a week to get through it if you listened to it every minute of every work day. You will also work without the worry of the music distracting your concentration. I find it enhances it when I'm working. I don't know how well this would work on school kids but teachers might want to try playing this during school time. You may create a few geniuses, we certainly could use more!

If you are looking for something to ease your sleep and oil your dreams I have put these CD's on in the background. Not only can I easily fall asleep when they are playing quietly in the background but it helps you sleep and you wake up in a very pleasant atmosphere if the music is still playing quietly when you wake(you probably would need to rip them to your MP3 player to do that). It's like napping at a classical music concert without the worry of being nudged by your spouse or offending the other concert goers with your snoring. That will be quite a unique experience for you and possibly give you some real sweet dreams. It has for me

So to wrap it up this is very intelligent, uplifting music that is great for your mind and your soul. It is definitely worth the purchase if you are a fan of the Four Seasons and the Baroque genre in my novice classical music fan's opinion

Excellent, Broad Selection.......2007-01-25

This 40-cd collection affords me a rare pleasure almost daily: the thrill of hearing something new by Vivaldi. Despite my best efforts over the years, I've managed to miss hearing a lot of great works by the master. Listening to a single CD now and then, catching tunes on the radio... you can't possibly get a comprehensive understanding of Vivaldi's output that way.

But when you work your way systematically from CD 1 through 40, you're sure to find many pleasant surprises. I've been skipping through everything I already know -- in some cases, it has only taken me about a minute to get through a whole CD (first 3 seconds of each track is usually enough). But then I stop and listen carefully three or four times to anything that's new.

Ah, what a pleasure. I've already acquired some new favorites. And some old standbys have proved even more rewarding, e.g. at first I thought RV 127 (CD 7, tracks 10-12) was performed too slowly (Naxos No: 8.553742 is much faster), but now I'm not sure; maybe it's BETTER that way! I can't recommend this set highly enough.

Wish the cost was $70 now. Guess the record producer (or Amazon) got tired of making less than $2 per CD.

No, I don't own this collection...yet. However, the price of the collection compels me to review it beforehand. Never have I seen such a complete collection of Vivaldi compositions at such an incredibly low price. At $1.75 dollars a CD, the record producer (Brilliant Classics) isn't making much of a profit. The compilation pulls some of its works from DG Achiv Produktion's vault (see Standage), such as the violin concertos, as well as from unknown producers (the Poland Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra is heavily featured). The collection is so complete that it is academic, and I would not be surprised if music libraries quickly emptied it from Amazon's shelves. The collection is simply worth it for the incredible price (English Concert's recording of the violin concertos cost nearly 30 bucks, and is exactly featured here). Overall, the price alone makes this collection exceptionally attractive, and the ensembles featured aren't bad either.
