A great collection of klezmer favorites!.......2006-09-30
Premiere violinist Itzhak Perlman is joined live in concert by four premiere klezmer groups: Brave Old World, The Klezmatics, Andy Statman, and the Klezmer Conservatory Band. Vibrant, poignant and distinctly old-world, klezmer is the musical style that developed among Eastern European Jews. Featuring the soulful fire of violin, clarinet, accordion, mandolin and vocal leads, accompanied by cimbalom (a hammered-dulcimer), piano, drums. There are a few soulful slow tunes mixed in amongst the fiery dances, but most of the selections on "Live in the Fiddler's House" are fun and up tempo, full of the instrumental virtuosity one would expect both of this genre, and of a concert violinist of Itzhak Perlman caliber. Klezmer is some of the world's best good-time music, right up there with Irish jigs, Cajun two-steps and country banjo pickin'. But it's not all sweetness and light; inherent in the mournful, minor mode of this traditional music is blend of opposites--both the sorrow of persecution and defiant sense of fun-in-the-moment inherent of a culture displaced, trying to maintain its identity in an ever-changing and often hostile world. And therein lies klezmer's appeal to the soul. For more great Jewish music, try any of the separate releases by Brave Old World, The Klezmatics, Andy Statman and his band, and the Klezmer Conservatory Band. You might also enjoy "The Hidden Gate: Jewish Music Around the World," the traditional Sephardic music of the group Voice of the Turtle, and the unplugged world fusion of Basya Schechter and Pharoah's Daughter in "Out of the Reeds."
Best Klezmer album.......2004-11-16
To me, this is the best klezmer album I've ever listened to (and I have quite a few). And it's a live album. Although it's a kind of live version of "In the Fiddler's House", the repertoire is not the same (they only share one or two songs). The bands accompanying Itzhak Perlman are at their best (they are the best klezmer performers!). I prefer, personally, Andy Statman's clarinet and mandolin (Andy's Ride and Meron Nign/In the Sukke are my favorites); then there are great moments with Brave Old World (Doina Naftule and A Hora mit Branfn are beautiful pieces) and the Klezmatics, of course. The 12 minute finale is an absolute well crafted medley, under Klezmer Conservatory Band's leader, Hankus Netsky. I did'n want it to end.
I don't like at all the women voices of Klezmer Conservatory Band, although the instrumental pieces (like Khosidl) are amazing.
There is not a second in this album which is not top klezmer.
This was a fun C.D........1999-01-16
For people who are into Klezmer music this is the finest C.D.! For Klezmer music lovers, this is a masterpiece.

Steven Spielberg veered from the futuristic sci-fi flirtations of A.I. and Minority Report with this brisk, stylish period take on the career of teen con-man extraordinaire Frank Abagnale (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his dogged G-man pursuer/de facto extended family member Carl Hanratty (Tom Hanks). As always, the director's musical collaborator is John Williams, and the scoring legend uses the occasion of their 20th collaboration as a rewarding musical journey back to the days when he was known as Johnny Williams, ambitious young pianist for Henry Mancini on such early jazz scores as Peter Gunn. Informed by a half-century of subsequent achievement, Williams's return to the jazz idiom of his youth yields a smart, nervous score that evokes more than mere nostalgia. But with Dan Higgins's moody sax often leading the way, the veteran composer's work here seems more evocative reinvention than revisitation, yet another tribute to his uncanny ability to make any idiom his own. A handful of pop standards (including Sinatra's "Come Fly with Me," Getz and Gilberto's "Girl from Ipanema," "The Christmas Song" by Nat "King" Cole) deftly color both period and plot, but, as always, it's Williams who provides Spielberg's masterful imagery with its musical life's blood. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding!.......2007-04-04
John Williams does it again! This man is the best composer I have ever heard! The music fits the scenes in the movies so unblievably well that you will wonder how one man was creative enough to think of it!
Johnny's "Lost in Soundtrack".......2006-08-25
The opening theme is the coolest ever. It has that jazzy, suspenseful, space-age groove that takes you back to the early 60's era portrayed in the movie.
Once I discovered it was done by John Williams, things started to click. The arrangement and themes actually go back way before he was famous. Back to an era he may not want you to remember. Back when he was known simply as "Johnny" Williams.
First, notice the melody and pace of the creeping marimbas and bubbling flutes. Next, catch a repeat of the old Sci-Fi, TV Fairy-Tale known as "LOST IN SPACE." Listen for the incidental, suspense-scene music throughout. Did you catch the composer's name in the credits?
Bingo!(and still very cool)!
Excellent Mix of Jazz and Emotion.......2006-02-20
This is brilliant. You will have this theme ringing in your ears for a month after listening. I have collected around 25 to 30 J. Williams scores. This is wonderful like the rest...
John Williams, Film Scores and Jazz all done to Perfection........2004-10-15
I loved the movie and now the music. I think it is one of the most original soundtracks that John Williams has ever done. The Jazz in this music is so peaceful and lighthearted. This soundtrack should be on any music lovers shelf. In my book, this music is a classic film score.
A Great "Catch".......2004-10-04
Steven Spielberg's 2002 film CATCH ME IF YOU CAN was a breezy crime caper movie based on the true-life story of Frank Abagnale, a real "phony" who nevertheless embarked on a three-year spree of writing bum checks adding up to millions during the 1960s. To capture that era's swinging mores, he had his great friend John Williams design one of that composer's quirkiest scores ever--very jazzy and redolent of the scores Henry Mancini devised for the "Pink Panther" films and Stanley Donen's 1963 classic CHARADE.
But for Williams, CATCH ME IF YOU CAN was very much a homecoming, as he started out in jazz and even worked quite closely with Mancini early on in Hollywood. The genuine jauntiness and mystery of the film's main musical motifs are balanced by moments of warm but not mushy sentimentality, and hit songs of that period by Frank Sinatra, Stan Getz, and Dusty Springfield round out this appealing collection.
CATCH ME IF YOU CAN was such an offbeat project for a composer and a director known for boldness, but it served as a challenge that Spielberg aced on the screen and Williams aced in his music. It is highly recommended for its sheer audacity in going back to the past and still remaining relevant to today.

CONTINUING THE DEFINITIVE LECUONA SERIES.......2004-09-14
In Each volume, Tirino's playing is Herculean. He understands all the forms-and then plays them flawlessly with total feel, command, poise, and technical panache this music requires. The rumba will have you begging for more! I don't think anyone could ever surpass the perfection Tirino brings to his Lecuona disks. Gold standard.
WOW!.......2001-05-17
I love this disc. Tirino is extraordinary from the first note to the last. How dare anyone call this great artist any other name but MAESTRO. This is a must have for any music lover. In fact, this is my favorite disk out of the whole Lecuona series on BIS. Get it, or you'll be waiting till the end of time for a better recording by any artist on these works, or on any Lecuona for that matter. 5 stars plus 100!
INCREDIBLE MUSIC AND PLAYING.......2001-05-04
This disc is fabulous from begining to end. Tirino is phenomenal-don't even DARE to think otherwise! This music swings and is beautiful from top to bottom. I'm going to buy all the discs in this series-if they are as good as this one, boy-I'm in for a treat. Highly recommended.
PIANIST OF PIANISTS.......2001-04-24
What more can be said of Tirino and his recordings of Lecuona's music except TOTAL, ABSOLUTE PERFECTION. This disc stands out for several reasons: The spirited Rumba with voices and chorus, and the Danzas Cubanas which are real gems. (as well as Vals Gitano). These danzas require EXTREME Left hand control of technique along with many colors and swing. I as a Cuban know this very well. I have never heard these pieces played better. Tirino's HUGE technique, beautiful sound, varied phrasing, and delicate subtelties never fail to amaze the listener-its incredible. Forget any negative comments-they are silly, stupid and uniformed. A better pianist, and better playing of this music you will never, EVER hear. If you want the best recordings of Lecuona's music, Tirino's series on the BIS label is IT. Get Lecuona's own recordings as well, as a point of reference. ENJOY!
PERFECTION: PIANO PLAYING DOESEN"T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS.......2001-04-24
I own the entire Tirino/Lecuona series on the BIS label and I am a teacher at a major musical institution. I have heard a lot of piano playing in my life, including much Latin American piano music, which I have a special affinity for. Simply stated: Tirino plays this music like a God. Pianism of this high a calibre dosen't get any better. Period. Of all the discs in this series, this one is my favorite,(along with Volume 3). The rumba sizzles, and Tirino infuses it with breadth, stylistic colors and rhythm with real panache. And he wrote the Spanish lyric himself! Amazing. Tirino's technical skills are monumental, BIG, Lisztian in ability, certainly far above "Clementi" or "Scarlatti", good heavens. His playing is perfect for Lecuona-in fact-for ANYTHING. Beyond staggering technique he has a singing quality and subtelty of nuance and phrasing rarely heard nowadays-flexibility of sound with thousands of variations in phrasing, tone, dynamic, and pedal subtelties that make his musicianship stand FAR above many others. His tone is rich, full, NEVER BANGING (enough already, please!), aristocratic-never vulgar. Anyone who really knows good piano playing will hear it. Tirino's playing is very warm. The Danzas Cubanas (especially Lola esta de Fiesta) are magical. Put on Lecuona's recordings and compare them side by side to Tirino's. AMAZINGLY IDENTICAL! Fact: Tirino has been recognized as the Lecuona authority in the world for a reason-TIME magazine, The New York Times, and Stereo Review can't be wrong. Neither is the Lecuona family, who have endorsed his recordings, interpretations and work. There might not even be a discussion about Lecuona these days, had it not been for the work of Tirino.
In summary-Tirino is a GREAT artist and one would be hard pressed to imagine anyone else coming along and improving on his recordings. Comments made to the contrary can be dismissed as silly, uninformed vulgarity. If you want to hear great Lecuona, and great Piano playing by a tremendous artist, this disc and others in this series are for you. If not, it might be advisable to learn music, and re-wire your brain to try and listen differently.

title of review.......2005-05-26
I remember listening to her old album Anchorless after seeing it in a bunch of online second-hand stores for like $1. It was a bland but tasteful 90s major label chick-rock album that I was never fully into, but I kinda liked it. Like most major label artists or bands whose albums end up out of print and in the bargain bins I assumed she'd never release anything else, so it was a nice surprise to discover this, her 4th album, which is all acoustic. Her music still has the same kind of intangible likeability about it, it seems like it's lacking something, but you still don't want to stop listening to it once you start. She's a smart singer, she knows she has a good voice but she never pushes herself to use it in a perfect professional way, she sings with just the right amount of lazyness to add a relaxed charm to her delivery without sacrificing tunefulness. It reminds me a bit of Jewel's first album. Some of the chord progressions are kinda bland, but somehow that never seems to be a fault that detracts from the overall effect of the music. This really is a vocally oriented album, as evidenced by the way the vocals are mixed louder than the guitar, and that would usually be offputting to me, because I'm a not a vocally-oriented music listener, but the way this girl uses her voice as an instrument transcends all the rules I thought I'd placed on what makes good music.

Product Description
Kirsten Proffit's debut release Lucky Girl features twelve tracks of memorable, hook-filled rock that showcase a powerful new creative talent in rock music. Of special note is her collaboration with Peter Malick ("Chance & Circumstance"), who was instrumental in giving Norah Jones her start. Produced by Bruce Witkin, Proffit's songs have already appeared in TV and film, and you can see why. Very catchy melodies to go along with her strong voice and guitar playing. When one hears the words "female singer/songwriter" one thinks of a single radio hit and a lot of filler. Not here, every song is a gem and a joy; it's hard to pick a favorite.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Debut.......2007-01-10
This CD is Kirsten Proffit's debut with a full CD release, and is excellent. She had previously collaborated with Peter Malick on a brilliant CD entitled "Chance and Circumstance," which includes two songs sung and co-written by Kirsten, and one of which is the Title Song of the CD. Kirsten has a great voice, which can be as sweet and creamy as a dreamsicle (on the song "Chance and Circumstance") and strong and sultry enough to sing the edgy rock songs (on "Whatever That Means," also from aforementioned Malick CD).
This debut CD, called "Lucky Girl," continues to show Kirsten's strong vocal and songwriting ability. As a bonus, this CD also includes the aforementioned song, "Chance and Circumstance." The backing band and the overall music production of this CD is good too, but none of the new songs are as good as the song "Chance and Circumstance" or her other previously released song called "Whatever That Means." However, this CD does give you a good opportunity to listen to Kirsten at the early stages of what will be a very promising career. I am a huge Norah Jones fan, and I believe that Kirsten will have a better career than Norah, because Kirsten exhibits greater desire and ability to write and sing the edgier rocker songs.
Catchy without being trendy.......2006-06-20
This artist will be around for a long time. Her songs are not only catchy but they have staying power. Kirsten is a very talented song writer and singer. Every song on this album is a hit which is so unusual. Everyone can relate to her songs because we've all been there at one time or another. I feel like she wrote these songs esecially for me and i'm sure you'll feel the same way. This album is FANTASTIC.
Addictive & Classic.......2006-06-16
Very rarely do you find music that is catchy and moving at the same time. Kirsten's melodies are amazing. Heed this warning - her music is extremely addictive and you will always want it to be part of your rotation, especially in the car! You will never tire of kirsten's songs - the sign of an instant classic.
Outstanding songs, great voice.......2006-06-14
If you're looking for an album with great songs, clever lyrics, and excellent production, this is it. Kirsten Proffit's vocals are amazing. Trust me, you'll be singing songs from this album in the shower!
Melodic Excellence!!!.......2006-06-12
Kirsten's voice and music is like taking a stroll into euphoric paradise. Highly recommended for easy listening and escaping from the everyday melodies. This is a perfect gift for a friend no matter what their music preference is!!

freshman flop.......2004-01-12
i really like julie doiron's music, but this album is pretty disappointing. since it's her first, it's not too surprising, but it really wasn't recorded too long before her other albums. her voice sounds like a chipmunk, and her songwriting is still very undeveloped. i recommend "heart + crime" instead, or if you prefer hearing her in french, "desormais".
