This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Even the best teams in sports can have a bad game. So too can be said of the work of some of the best bands. Built to Last has earned Dead Last place in my Dead collection. It is the only CD in my extensive Dead collection for which I truly regret my purchase.

alot of poeple don't feel this was a good disc.i would have to disagree with that.i've been a dead head sence i was about 15,i'm now 42.in that 27 year time span i've seen the band grow.60's with pig pen as the front man,and jerry evoving in to that slot as they eased into the 70's. around 1973-74 they were inspired to record things like "blues for allah" and "wake of the flood".both very creative albums.and the shows that followed were made of the same magic.
then brent started to find his place in the band ,in the 80's.he and jerry were on the same plain and complamented each other so well.
then at around the time of "in the dark" the band felt it was time to give brent the spotlight.and how he did shine!his music brought a new creativity to the music ,not felt sence that mid 70's time period.
the very first time i heard "i will take you home",it was at the buffalo july 4th ,1989 show.i was wowed.tears filled me up alittle (i was not alone in that)a year or so later the new disc came out.i went straight to that track to see if the studio version was as good.it was.
so i've seen the band grow over the years ,and dig every new turn they took.thats was the grate thing about the band .it alway continued to grow.
so maybe if you listen to the disc with the history in mind ,you'll come away with a little different perspective.

This album was very disappointing for me. I bought it the day it was released and I was very excited, I had seen the Dead perform "Victim" and "Blow away" on their previous tour and I was expecting greatness. The production is good, and Jerry is in fine form, but these songs, with the exceptions of "Victim, Blow away, and Standing on the moon" they just don't make it for me. The rest of the songs are all filler, as far as I'm concerned. Don't think I'm not a Brent fan, I loved Brent and miss him very much. I think that of all the Dead's keyboard players that Brent was the one that had that magical connection with Jerry. Maybe it was the opiates, I don't know but it seems like Brent and Jerry were on the same wavelength, they were in perfect harmony with each other. Brent WAS a Deadhead, unlike Vince or Bruce. Unfortunately, Brent was not a very strong songwriter, with the exception of "Blow away." This is a great song that worked very well live. Check out "Blow away" on the Dead's "Dozin' at the Knick" set and you'll see what I mean. Brent really kicked ass at that show, man. He is and will be missed for a long, long, time by many Deadheads like myself that appreciated his sparkling, cosmic playing that worked so well with my favorite band of all time.
last studio record.......2002-11-04
This cd isn t one of the most favorites by Heads in consensus, but it conjures a beautiful snapshot of what fed a lot of the late 80 s shows of this band. Foolish heart, Picasso moon, so on..
Also, if you get a chance to read the making of this record in the book 'skeleton key', it'll give you a good inside on how it was recorded and the work that went behind it.

From my point of view this is Sick Of It All at thier very best. Polished just right by RATM producer GGGarth, never had the band been so tight and explosive. Lyrics are my favorite of any hardcore cd out there, catchy, uplifiting but raw and aggressive. Perfection in hardcore, the machine only gets tighter from here on out. The best place to start when digging in the SOIA treasure trove. One Step Ahead, Good Lookin' Out, Burn 'Em Down, Closer... pretty much all the songs on here are great, just let it all sink in. Oh and BTW this has not left my CD stack for 5 or 6 years so... Built To Last, TRUTH.

some people may complain about an album being overproduced, but that is just lame. this cd is very well produced. yes their older rougher sounding stuff is underproduced and all of it is still phenomenal. but so is this even if it sounds cleaner. their newer stuff is just as clean as well on fat. it is just how they want to sound now. this cd stands the test of time and is one of their best offerings.

Ahhh Yes, Sick Of It Alls Final album on a major label. Not that it matters but GGGarth was enlisted to produce this album which at the time I thought was way out of left field for them but I can understand why a HUGE label like Elektra would have them work with a big name producer. Anyway, Sick of it all pretty much continues where they left off on Scratch The Surface except (this is the reason for the 4 star review) the production is well..... a little too slick. The Beauty of Sick of It Alls previous albums was the raw power of the songs combined with a Very raw but well produced recording. This dosen't make the songs on this album any less important at all but GGGArths over-produced effort does have a bit of a negative impact on BUILT TO LAST. If you can overlook the production there are some really good tracks on this album (Built To Last, Busted, Nice, One Step Ahead, Don't Follow, Us Vs Them and Jungle - features some really good tribal percussion). Craig sings on "BUSTED" which is the rawest track on the CD. Definitely not a CD to bypass.

Do not buy this cd. It is the worst excuse for music that i have ever heard in my life. THe lyrics are horrible and my four year old brother can play the guitar better than those sorry muscians if that's what you consider them.
The best in 90's hardcore.......1999-04-06
As of late, hardcore bands have been slipping further and further away from punk, displaying more metallic influences. It seems that the only thing that modern hardcore bands have that differ from other "metal" bands is a certain attitude. Showing someone "Breed the Killers", Earth Crisis' latest offering, in attempt to show them what hardcore is may not get the point across as the untrained ear would immediately assume "oh, so hardcore is like Machine Head and Napalm Death". Sick of it All still whips out as much punk as metal and this is one of the most stellar albums I have encountered in the genre. In my cd collection of over 200 discs, this one gets played at least twice a week. I also find that it is far more exciting than Earth Crisis and Snapcase (personal opinion of course).

Interesting and engaging.......2004-12-31
This CD combines a lecture and musical examples by Ron Kapilow with a recording of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. Mr. Kapilow's talk is interesting and he is an engaging speaker. He briefly discusses the structure of the movements and points out details that "make it great." Mr. Kapilow also plays short passages of EKN re-written in a correct but more pedestrian style which highlight Mozart's genius. These negative examples are quite interesting and helped me hear this very familiar piece with new ears.
Three problems kept me from giving this 5 stars. First, the lecture is so brief that it is rather superficial. I would have preferred a bit more depth. Second, some sort of written materials would have been helpful. Including a brief written outline of the movements, with timings, and comments by Mr. Kapilow would make the CD more useful and not add much to the cost. Finally, in the actual performance of EKN on the CD, the tracks for the 2nd and 3rd movements (Romanze and Minuetto) are reversed, which is a confusing mistake, especially, I would think, for those not very familiar with the music who try to match up Mr. Kapilow's lecture with the actual performance.
Overall this CD is quite worthwhile and even those who have heard EKN many times will no doubt learn something new.

I have been listening to Eine Kleine Nachtsmusik for five decades now but after listening to Kapilow's analysis of it and his guide to its structures and subtleties, I now feel as if I am hearing it for the first time. These insights not only deepen one's appreciation of glorious music such as this familiar Mozart masterpiece, they also educate the amateur ear to listen to other music with greater understanding of what has gone into it, thus enormously increasing one's musical pleasure. Ideal listening for the classroom, the old folks' home and just about everything and everybody in between!

Sensational Vocal Album by Carole Farley and William Bolcom.......2007-02-13
Carole Farley and William Bolcom have recorded this landmark CD, and I can easily understand why this CD received a GRAMMY nomination in the "Best Vocal Recording of the Year" and a 2nd GRAMMY nomination in the "Best Engineered Recording of the Year" category. It's indeed one of the best vocal albums of contemporary songs ever made. Carole Farley, who made her MET debut in the MET's first LULU production, seems to be just at home with Puccini, Poulenc, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich and even Latin American popular songs (her Lecuona songs album is extremely beautiful).
William Bolcom's accompaniment is brilliant, and the songs are a revelation.

Great Songs, but Mind the Singer.......2006-07-04
This is one of those discs where the listener has to balance the advantages of the program with the disadvantages of the performance. Bolcom is one of this country's most versatile and brilliant composers, and those qualities are demonstrated to great effect in the songs on this album. His piano playing is, as one would expect, also solid and expressive. The drawback here is Carole Farley. Although her diction and intonation are good, as far as tone-color goes, she seems to be a one-trick pony; and if you don't like that trick (opera singer trying to sound like what she thinks a musical theater singer sounds like), listening to her can get very tiring. So while I highly recommend the disc for its content, I suggest listening to excerpts first before buying just to make sure that the singer's voice doesn't drive you batty.
The Songs of William Bolcom.......2006-02-14
The American composer William Bolcom (b. 1938) is best-known for his large-scale setting of William Blake's "Songs of Innocence and Experience," which is available on a 3-CD Naxos set. This new collection of Bolcom's songs also on Naxos shows the composers's lifelong fascination with Blake. It includes an early lyrical setting of Blake's poem, "Mary" which deals with a beautiful and intelligent young woman and her rejection by her society. In the several torch and cabaret-style works it includes, the collection also shows Bolcom's attempts to fuse classical with popular styles of music. Bolcom also has done so in his piano music, much of which is heavily influenced by ragtime.
The songs on this CD are performed and selected by soprano Carole Farley with Bolcom himself at the piano. Ms. Farley has also recorded for Naxos' "American classics" series a selection of the songs of Ned Rorem with Rorem at the piano. Ms. Farley and Naxos are doing listeners a service by introducing them to the world of the American art song.
The highlight of this CD is the 20-minute song-cycle "I will breathe a mountain" in which Bolcom sets 11 poems by American women. The poems were selected by Alice Fulton, and they include Fulton's own "I will swing those obligatos around" in which the young singer describes a come-on from a boor. The song writing is declamatory in character with many twists, turns, and shouts in the vocal line. Only the setting of H.D.'s "Never More Will the Wind" is lyrical and flowing. Besides Fulton and H.D. the settings include poems by Millay, Gwendolwn Brooks (a poem called "The Crazy Woman" with appropriately wild shrieks) Anne Sexton, Denise Levertov, Marianne Moore (listen to what Ms. Farley makes of the poets wish to be a DRA' GON), Emily Dickinson (in a moving poem of the stillness of a home after death),Louise Bogan, May Swenson, and Elizabeth Bishop. "I will breathe a mountain" is an outstanding and moving contemporary American song-cycle and is in itself sufficient reason for hearing this recording.
The CD also includes a second exquisite cycle, "Songs to Dance" which sets ten miniature poems by George Montgomery. This is a work to be danced as well as sung, and it has apparently been performed live only once, by the composer, his wife, the soprano Joan Morris, and dancer, Dan Wagoner. It has never been recorded before. The work deserves to be heard and seen.
Many of the remaining works on this CD are cabaret-style theatrical pieces that Bolcom composed in collaboration with lyricist Arnold Weinstein. The best of these are two torch songs from a show called "Casino Paradise": Night Make my Day (a parody of the torch style which is sometimes performed straight) and "My Father the Gangster", in which a young woman laments how men are, understandably, worried about her father and afraid to approach her. The collection opens with a scream by Ms. Farley in the erotic novelty "You cannot have me now", about the affairs of the wife of a German officer, sung with a heavily inflected German accent and also set to words by Weinstein.
I enjoyed Bolcom's short setting of May Swenson's poem "The Digital Wonder Watch" with the tick-ticking in the piano. This song is a satire of technology, with the poet describing the features of her "wonderful watch" while asking: "Does it show how to wind up/a broken heart?" The other songs on the CD include the passionate "The Last Days of Mankind", conceived for rock singer Marianne Faithful, two eloquent settings of poems by Richard Tillinghast, and four concluding early collaborations between Bolcom and Weinstein.
This CD offers an opportunity to explore the world of American song in the works of a leading contemporary composer. The cycle, "I will breathe a mountain" will be a lasting achievement in American art song.
