She was famous as both artist and model, infamous as political revolutionary and social libertine, and Frida Kahlo's controversial life couldn't help but seem the stuff of great musical theater. I absolutely love this soundtrack! Everytime I listen to it, I feel as though I am in Mexico during the revolution and Frida's life. Everyone should choose their own life soundtrack and this one allows us to see into Frida's life more clearly.

Fell into the movie trying to avoid study and hang out with a jilted housemate. If I'm honest, Salma Hayek was the main draw. Wafer thin.
However, I was enraptured by the story of Frida and the amazing performance (no wonder she was oscar nominated).
I bought the soundtrack the next morning. It really got to me.This is a great soundtrack and, yes, it does help if you have seen the movie but not necessary. I loved the latin passion (highs and lows). Chervala Vargas as Elliot Goldenthal describes in the slieve was once Frida's lover. I loved her Paloma Negra. So powerful.
There is something for everyone in this long soundtrack.
Do as i have: watch the movie and buy the soundtrack. Worth the time and money.

I purchased this CD after seeing the movie. The music is enjoyable to listen to and passionate as I would think Frida was. I purchased this CD a second time to give to a female Hispanic artist who identifies with the trials and tribulations of Frida. This artist now paints while listening to this CD. Her artwork not only has improved but has become popular. I defiantly recommend its purchase.

Simply perfection. Each song will move you. I dont really even understand Spanish ( only simple conversational Spanish) and it strums my every emotion. I just LOVE it!

Few would claim that Midnight Oil's Peter Garrett is the world's greatest rock vocalist, but he clearly means what he sings. On Diesel and Dust, Garrett and company serve up a collection of solid pop-rock songs that follow the groundwork laid by their early albums. Intrinsic to their sound is a guitars-bass-drums attack spiced occasionally with horns and keyboards and capped with Garrett's throaty vocals. Garrett's lyrics on Deisel and Dust are noteworthy because they are not about love or personal relationships but instead address larger issues. "Beds Are Burning" is a call to return the land expropriated from Australia's aboriginal peoples, while "The Dead Heart" and "Bullroarer" celebrate their rich cultural heritage. Many bands and artists have made some sort of political or social concern apparent in their work, but few have done so as consistently, dedicatedly, and tunefully as Midnight Oil. --Al Massa

Greatest Album by greatest band of all time.......2007-05-11

My single favorite band of all time - nothing will ever come close. This album is a great introduction to their sound. Full of incredible passion, powerful lyrics, unreal guitar solos, and creativity and originality in every song. The popular Beds are Burning is not even in my top 5 songs on this album (Sell My Soul is #1, and possibly my number 1 song of all time. Dreamworld is pretty special too).

If you fall in love with the album, as I did, you can move onto some of their older stuff - 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1, or Red Sails in the Sunset are similarly incredible, and even more creative.

The Oils are truly a special band, and 6 years after their breakup, I still pop in my mix CD's in the car when my kids aren't around. I'll never understand why they didn't become as popular as, say, U2 or REM - they are all that and more. But I suppose it makes it that much more amazing for the die hard fans that still rave about the Oils to this day.

A record that transcends music.......2007-03-21

Diesel and Dust is the perfect merger of rock and social progressivism. Never has a record compelled me to feel as moved as this one, particularly on songs like 'Warakurna', 'Beds are Burning', 'The Dead Heart', or 'Dreamworld'. Never has anyone described with such power and poignancy the plight of the underclass or displaced minorities (in this case the Aboriginal peoples of Australia) in a manner that anyone can relate to. The evocative words ("The western desert lives and breathes at 45 degrees"), the tones used on Rob Hirst's drums, Jim Moginie's and Martin Rotsey's dueling acoustic guitars on the 'Dead Heart', and Peter Garrett's gravel like edge to his singing on tracks like 'Put Down that Weapon', 'Arctic World' or 'Sell My Soul' evoke the imagery of a band that traveled for miles through sandy hot desert lands in pickup trucks and tried to make sense of their experiences upon returning to Sydney. The music intimates the myriad of emotions that the band experienced after meeting and living among simple people, witnessing their stories of hardship and difficulties and the uplifting hope and dignity they found among them.

The record, despite its serious themes, is life affirming, as the defiantly rocking closer "Sometimes" appropriately underscores. Midnight Oil believes in the redemptive power of the human spirit in spite of the injustice and inequities in our world today.

From a musical standpoint, each song is flawlessly crafted and produced. Warne Livesey does an oustanding job of integrating the sounds of the earth and of the band, with the sounds of electronic beats and synthesizers. This is a modern rock record to be sure, in spite of its folksy songs and socially conscious subject matter. This record and "10,9,8..." were Midnight Oil's finest hours. However, this record has a power all its own, as any time we see hardship, suffering and inequality in this world, all we in the west need to do is listen to this record to understand how it tastes, smells and feels to be in that condition. A remarkable record. One for the ages. Get it if you don't have it.

raw aussie energy.......2006-07-14

Somewhere in a back corner of my mind, I foster an ambition in my next life of being Peter Garrett's runt sibling (I mean, I'd have to be a runt, wouldn't I? He's bigger than almost anybody I've ever seen on stage doing rock and roll) and the drummer in the band. That's how involved I get with Midnight Oil's music when I hear it. "Diesel And Dust", probably their most media-friendly album - even if, as an American, you don't get some of the political references (and make no mistake; Midnight Oil's music is not love songs or mundane angst; almost without reserve, it is ALL political) is also pretty much their most tuneful. That said, Peter cannot be said to be singing as much as pushing, growling, and wailing the songs out, albeit in a more or less agreeably melodic way. I could be accused of being not very picky, but personally I prefer voices like that, with genuine emotion and pure guts coming from every note. Pretty, trained singing is really fairly lifeless to me. This is the real deal, raw, angry, demanding your attention. I lived in Australia for a while - where I became acquainted with this music - and got to know the politics behind the songs. Down Under, you have a political opinion and you espouse it, sometimes loudly, but never do you hide your candle under a basket - everybody has a personal view and they're not afraid to let you know what it is. Midnight Oil, along with a lot of Aussie bands, uses their music as a forum, as shown when they set up an ad hoc outdoor performance in front of the Exxon headquarters in New York some time ago. (Wish I'd been there.) "Diesel And Dust" is rife with topical references, which still play well, nearly 20 years on; the genocide over generations of the Aboriginal people - did you know they were used in biological experiments, a lot of them quite deadly, until fairly recently? - ecological suicide, pollution, almost any hot-button topic is not beyond the reach of the Oils. And yet the music is so singable and danceable that they're able to get you thinking about the content before you even know you are. It's hard to pick a favourite on the album - the only song I'm not crazy about, and even then I usually don't skip over it ,is "Whoah" because it's a little draggy. "Bullroarer", "The Dead Heart", "Warakurna" and "Sell My Soul" are probably what I would list as favourites, for the sake of argument and discussion; all of them get my blood moving, and the instrumentation does not take a backseat to Peter's insistent yowls and vocal crescendos. Everything that comes from instrument or throat complements the other. This is probably my favourite Midnight Oil album, because it was my introduction to the band, but it is by no means the only one in my collection. I would have to recommend it highly to anyone who wants to expand their musical inventory - and get a little commentary on the side that is perhaps new to them. And next life, Peter. You don't have far to go to find your drummer.

An all time great album-top 10, in fact.......2006-06-16

I just noticed that I reviewed this album years ago, as "A music fan" [October 23, 1999]. Since I've listened to this album again in the meantime, I thought I'd try and do a more informative job this time!].

As per my original review, I have to say that it is an open question of whether this album is the Oils best, or "10-1" takes the honour.

Initially, my reaction was that the album had a killer opening three tracks. On relistening to it, it gets better, as some songs grow on you even more.

Here are my favourite tracks:

Beds are burning: pop/rock classic, melodic and clangy at the same time.

Put down that weapon: sort of in the same vein as "10-1"'s "Short memory". The track is a slow pop song that has a brilliant change of pace...a delicious bass riff veers into hyper, clangy rock, and then returns to a slow send off. Terrific stuff.

Dreamworld: one fan told me that the lead singer was a big fan of The Beach Boys. I'd always considered this song as a Beach Boys style song. It's my favourite song from the album, probably. Not the best intro, but once the harmonies and melodies kick in, it's a terrific pop song.

The dead heart: this is a real sing-a-long pop song. You should find the "do do do do do do"'s really catchy.

Sell my soul: this is the song that has REALLY grown on me-a lost Oils classic, a la "Sleep". I love the attention grabbing, funky opening "I am ready. Let's begin". Again, the song has strong melody, as is usual for quality Oils songs.

Sometimes: probably the best of the rest.

In my mind, I always think of this album as in the same vein as The Red Hot Chilli Peppers' "Californication" album. Both albums are immensely strong. This Oils album has really only song which I don't rate that highly, but I can't remember which it is! Californication is like that too, but this Oil's album has stronger songs, and more of them.

Same goes when comparing the Oils "10-1" album with the Chilli Peppers' "Blood sugar sex magik". "10-1" is great because of the four songs on it which form the foundation of the Oils' greatest songs ever. BSSM by the RHCP is also a very good album due to the presence of four songs, but again, I think the Oil's album has the stronger four songs.

they reinvented rock and roll.......2006-06-08

One guy came to me one day and said "listen to that one buddy, it's pretty cool". It was in 1993, and most people had never heard about this band in Europe, including myself.

And it was the great shock. It takes only a few seconds to realize what a masterpiece you have. This kind of thing happens rarely. Such an incredible voice, and this powerful, wild sound, coming from "elsewhere"... They reinvented rock & roll, and they did not joke!
Beds are burning was this kind of song that could appeal to almost everyone, from the hard rock purist to the radio amateur. The melody itself is eternal.
Another fantastic song on the album is "put down that weapon". Musically as impressive as the former one, it impresses also with the passion Garret has to deliver his peaceful message.

There is no weak track on this album. I mean, try any of them alone, and you will have something between "positively inspired" and "awesome".
Every track has got this sense of rough urgency that is the trademark of the group. In the same time the whole is perfectly produced and played.

Just my opinion, in the "ranking game" : Now that I know most of their albums, I would give 5 stars for 3 of them :

3. Place without a postcard

Prepare to be blown away!.......2007-06-25

Burning Brides have outdone themselves with this new album! I got goosebumps from the first strum of Dimiti's mighty axe! This band continues to produce new and amazing music. Each song on this album leaves an impression that will NOT be forgotten. What I feel is most different on this album, as compared to the first two releases, is an obvious L.A. feel to the sounds that I hear. It is almost as if the band has become more comfortable with themselves as artists...thank goodness for that ocean air! Props to Burning Brides for creating their best album yet!

Back With A Vengance.......2007-06-24

Hang Love is The Burning Brides 3rd record, and it is amazing. To me it takes all the best parts of their two previous records Fall of the Plastic Empire and Leave No Ashes, and then adds a whole heaping of Heavy. Having been a fan for a long time, its great to see them continuing to push themselves to make their songs better, and not rest on their laurels. My picks for top song are: Waring Street, Your Nation Will Die, and Poor House.

Great title hit!.......2007-06-20

Burning Love was one of Elvis' best recordings period. Unfortunately Elvis' management never figured out how to package and market his albums. Instead of releasing a new album featuring his big hit single, they opted for the quick and easy buck by packaging the hit with a bunch of older, so-so songs from his movies.

In order to be able to release several albums a year, Elvis' management had started packaging his new singles with some of his old songs that had not been released on an album. While it may have been a way to make a fast buck, Elvis' new material deserved better and should have been packaged with other new songs and treated as a major release, rather than a budget release. While the song Burning Love went all the way to number 2 on the Billboard singles chart and number 1 on the rival Cashbox chart, the album only managed to climb to 22 on the album chart. Elvis had enough new material at the time to put out a high-quality new album that probably would have done much better on the chart. As it was, they pretty much wasted his biggest hit of the 1970s by putting it on an album with a bunch of dated material.

There's a lot to be said for continuity and high concept, and Coheed and Cambria have invented an elaborate geeky parallel sci-fi world that spread over four CDs. If you follow the story line, it unfolds like some punk Harry Potter series; equally ambitious and didactic and almost as tightly written as the Moody Blues' "Days of Future Passed." You can also listen to each of the albums without a thought about the story and marvel at the musicianship, the intricately layered guitars, Claudio Sanchez's overwrought and rather pinched vocals and the sheer imagination displayed by these four musicians whose idiosyncratic emo seamlessly flows into prog rock. Epic, surreal, bigger than life, and utterly unlike anything you've heard in decades--even Geddy Lee expounding on free will. -- Jaan Uhelszki

Luis Mejia (son) - I have to admit that I am one of those guys who love proffesional and complex music but I certainly lost my hope since mid 90's, specially in prog and good rock, and stayed in the era of the 70's, a magical era wich I didn't live. I never met the band 'till I heard the genre "new prog" and Coheed And Cambria was on the main charts, I also recognized the band because my cousin told me about it so I decided to give them a try, and this was the first album I bought seen the good critics and sales. Low in hopes, even when I heard the first track I was surprised they applied that kind of instruments in a classical way. Even more than a year that I've heard this album from the first track to the last one I'm still shocked of how excellent, delicate and professional it is!

I characterize this album more as heavy metal or progressive metal, even a litle bit of alt rock, but it stays a little apart from prog, even when it has certain characteristics of the genre.

The composition of each track is simple superb, delicate, heavy and well thought. Lisetn well, EVERY track is incredible and outstanding, one of the few album you don't have to skip any track; Welcome Home, Ten Speed (Of God Blood And Burial), the four fragments of The Willing Well (specially part 4), The Suffering and Wake Up are extremelly potent tracks that show every characteristic of the album, including soft ballads (until half of the album I never imagined a soft track), rythmical and confortable tracks like The Suffering, heavy, potential tracks with escapist sounds like Welcome Home and Ten Speed, the most likely prog songs like the fragments of The Willnig Well, and so on, each track is different from the other one. The moods of the CD are quite difficult to identify; I quite agree with those reviewers who characterize this album mainly EMO, and though it has many characteristics of EMO (wich I still do not think is a defined or even real genre) it also assimilates alt rock, prog, heavy metal, and so on; within the moods the songs are very different among each other but I can say their moods are agressive, hard, soft, constantly changing, experimental and a certain level of complexity.

Among the artists the guitar of Travis Stever is the best feature in the album, he's such a talented guitarrist, Claudio Sanchez vocals are very melodic and nice to hear but it isn't a voice such talented and trained but stunning as well, Josh Eppard drums are one of those instruments that in every song you listen to them carefully, and Michael Todd bass can be heard, you don't know how it bothers me not to be able to hear a bass in a song, but he makes it sound incredible.

Viewed as a concept album, its a little weird and even a little dumb as a concept album, I trully know that they are trying to make five albums about Teh Amory Wars but it's obvious that Coheed And Cambria would have a lot more credit and much better critics if it weren't for this detail.

In conclussion this band demonstrate among a world full of pitiful new music how still it can be excellent compositions written, if they only take their time, any musician can bring back the flame of music, good music, and the CD is a masterpiece, my sincere recommendations to everyone who appreciates good music.

Alan Dean Foster Meets Rush!.......2007-05-25

As my title states, Coheed & Cambria remind me of a really good sci/fi book set to music. Like a cross between Star Wars and Dream Theatre. I got IKSOSE first and still like that album better, I think simply because it is easier to follow the storyline. This album is much more musically complex though. It took me a long time to get used to the Claudio's voice because I a fan of Doom Metal not pop (not that they are a pop band), so it actually was the storyline that got me so interested. If you like concept albums, this is like trying to solve a really awesome riddle. I love the intro to Good Apollo with the violin!

Great Album.......2007-05-09

Yes C&C is an acquired taste, everything written in other reviews for all the albums pretty much spells out what people like about them. They are just what the current scene lacks, and bring back melodic, powerful, catchy metal in spades.....call it emo(the stupidest label ever coined bar none) or any other dumb term you want.....these guys simply rock.
The reviewer below is more interested in the album art, if thats your concern stick with cereal boxes or bazooka joe wrappers, this is rock n' roll. He also claims "sub par musicianship", which is an amazingly naive statement by someone who must know little about that which they speak. Grab a guitar and write tunes anywhere near this level. Sub par my a**. These guys are at the top of their game.

Disappointing from an outsider's perspective........2007-04-25

I am a huge fan of concept albums. Dream Theater's "Scenes from a Memory" and Queensryche's "Operation Mindcrime" are two of my all-time favorite albums because they bring together theme and form. In other words, the music fits the theme of the album, which is also complemented by the artwork and the composition's overall structure.

I am also a fan of new punk rock. Taking Back Sunday's "Tell All Your Friends" is an anthemic album that tugs at many strings, notably angst and self-conscious outcast. Thursday's "War All the Time" is a prime example of a relatively simple subset of music (emo/punk) reaching beyond its comfort zone into more controversial territory. Still organic, still cohesive.

"Cohesive", ironically enough, is not a word I'd use to describe Coheed and Cambria's "Good Apollo" album. It fails in both respects: it does not unify its theme (complex story) with its content (music & artwork) and the overall musicianship is subpar. Though I am not familiar with their previous albums (and therefore not familiar with the story that precedes it) I will strictly deal with this album as it stands alone.

At first glance, the album's song titles ("Ten Speed (Of God's Blood and Burial)", "Apollo I: The Writing Writer", "The Willing Well I: Fuel for the Feeding End") suggest an intricately woven story that will not easily reveal itself to the listener. A more negative viewpoint would say that the track titles are deliberately complicated; they are strange for the sake of strangeness. The artwork is dark, sinister and also suggests that the music will sound gothic or at least morose.

Convoluted story? Yes. Gothic, intricate music? No. What we have is the following:

A piano, string-quartet intro to start off the album. It begins with "Keeping the Blade", an instrumental piece that starts with a single ominous note, and gradually builds up to a full 4-string ensemble with a piano hinting at an eerie buildup. "Always & Never" is a warm acoustic piece that hints at singer/songwriter Claudio Sanchez' harmonized and pained vocals. Nothing heavy or intricate. "Welcome Home" takes this same acoustic guitar and adds a metal crunch to it. The song is 6 minutes of pinched vocals, squealing guitars, and epic strings.

This is as close as the album gets to its artwork and song title complexity. From there, you have simple guitar rock, campy "punk" songs, devoid of any real complexity. Songs that attempt to mimic odd time signatures ("Mother May I") end up sounding empty and poorly thought-out. Others, such as the insufferable mouthful "The Willing Well II: Fear Through the Eyes of Madness" are too flimsy to merit a 7-minute duration.

All in all, it is a lump of coal in a silver box. Attempting to say that Coheed and Cambria are bridging the gap between punk rock and progressive rock is almost insulting. The artwork and thematic construction of the album suggests that the songs will come together to create a progressive masterpiece. But (and I should have thought of this before buying it) it's an album written by an emo band. Though I don't want to discredit Sanchez' imagination, the music does not fit the rest of the album. He needs to up his songwriting to compete with the intricacies of his album's conceptual designs or tone the art in his future albums down to more accurately reflect the music within.

This is not a progressive masterpiece - it's a subpar emo album with a flashy exterior and one good song.

Why don't you own this?.......2005-08-21

This, fellow ARA fans, is the real thing. The recordings are clear, the production very good and the songs are just as good as we remembered. There have been other recordings released on CD which should have never seen the light of day due to terrible original recordings, but don't worry this time. These recordings are a delight!

The Combination of "Stacked Deck" and "Too Stuffed to Jump" may overwhelm some people into thinking they have all of the classic ARA music if they own that CD. This is understandable because those two albums are incredible and have both of ARA's biggest hits: "Third Rate Romace" and "Amazing Grace (Used To Be Her Favorite Song)," but "Toucan Do It Too" combined with "Burning The Ballroom Down" is just as loaded with quality songs and performances.

My all-time favorite ARA song is "Burning The Ballroom Down" because of the music and, to me more importantly, from the stream of emotions that come from the singer's perspective. Russell Smith nails this song all the way from smugness ("I know why you're here by the look in your eye") at the beginning to near-desperation ("It might have to last me forever if I don't see you again") at the end. "Never Been To The Islands" kicks things off with a laid-back style that's easy on the ears, quickly followed by Smith's soulful rendition of "Never Been Hurt" for an excellent contrast.

Again, the musical styles vary across a wide spectrum with the music fitting the lrics and they are all good. The group that was too rock for country, too country for rock and just too eclectic for anywhere else was before its time, but it's given us some great songs.

Pick this up along with another great two-album ARA CD, "Stacked Deck/Too Stuffed To Jump" and their later, self-titled CD.
If you've never heard the Amazing Rhythm Aces, how do you know if you will like them? Do you like surprisingly thoughtful and often clever lyrics? Do you like excellent musicianship? Do you enjoy being exposed to different sounding songs on the same CD? You could do a whole lot worse than this CD and it would be hard to do much better.

I came to the Aces many years after they made their first recordings, and it felt like stumbling on a gold mine or discovering at age 40 that there was such a thing as chocolate. I first heard "Burning the Ballroom Down" on a bootleg tape, driving to Dulles Airport before daylight, and it was like being transported elsewhere. This is my favorite album of the 1000+ albums I own.

I have been reading several reviews, several, several, and the motto has been always the same, "The spectacular Haslam's voice, the spectacular Haslam's voice" again and again and again, hey, you all, pay attention please; Ok her voice is the first impact and the trade mark of this band, and I love her voice too, but everybody has been forgotten that Michael Dunford always composed all the songs, virtually all the songs since the first time, and mainly on this album where he composed all the songs, simply the entire album, he was the genius of the band, "he was the Renaissance soul". You can replace eventually a singer, a bassist, but try to replace the genius composer, try to replace Michael Dunford here in this case and for sure Renaissance wouldn't have existed. Only later John Camp started to contribute and share the compositional task with Dunford, but Dunford kept himself as the main composer untill the end. Remember Annie has never composed anything. I repeat, I love Annie Haslam's voice it is superbly beautiful but you all have forgotten the real hero here. This album in my opinion it doesn't have only one weak moment, or a weak composition, it is perfect and the best Renaissance work, and don't forget John Tout's unbelievable piano playing ability he is a real piano genius, all the group was on their peak, superb work, "Ashes are burning" is the best song, but you can recognize that is a masterpiece since the first piano notes of the "Can you understand". Simply perfect. Moving, Essential to all progressive rock fans.

Burned out on "Ashes" and Renaissance?.......2007-02-21

I was happy to see that the music from Renaissance is still being printed. I was a fan of the band when this album came out, saw them once in concert, and loved the haunting melodies, vocals, and bass lines. Listening to the album now, however, it definitely sounds dated and somewhat predictable. Haslam's voice is still wonderful to listen to and the title track is the best. I would probably recommend Novella over this work if you wanted to purchase only one album.

The Renaissance Masterpiece .......2006-07-20

1973's "Ashes Are Burning" is the fourth Renaissance album, which saw the band say goodbye to guitarist Rob Hendry and a hearty hello to guitarist/songwriter Michael Dunford. "Ashes Are Burning" is also the band's masterpiece, with stunningly superb songs & performances from beginning to end. It's just an incredible listening experience. All six songs on "Ashes" are musical works of art in their own right. The nearly 10-minute "Can You Understand" sees Renaissance thundering in like a powerful storm, before the thunder gives way to the calm and beauty of Annie Haslam's voice and the lovely accompanyment by the band. Then they go thundering out again at the end. It's brilliant! The next four pieces, "Let It Grow," "On The Frontier," "Carpet Of The Sun," and "At The Harbor" are simply gorgeous numbers. But the band save the best for last---the title track, which is 11 1/2 minutes of astounding, passionate classical/rock (with a thrilling, jamming instrumental bridge and powerful conclusion, too). It is without question the Renaissance signature song, the number they always concluded their concerts with, and rightfully so. Absolutely phenomenal work from the whole band---Annie Haslam's astonishing five-octave voice, and the equally astonishng playing of guitarist Michael Dunford, bassist Jon Camp, keyboardist John Tout, and drummer Terry Sullivan. "Ashes Are Burning" is a sensational album from a sensational group. Buy it now!

The beginning of a creative peak.......2006-06-05

This 1973 album marks the beginning of the bands signature sound and a four album period that shows them at a creative peak. The lineup on this album included lead vocalist Annie Haslam, John Camp (Rickenbacker 4001 bass and vocals), John Tout (acoustic piano, harpsichord, organ, moog synthesizer, and vocals), Michael Dunford (acoustic guitar), and Terence Sullivan (drums/percussion and vocals). Of the musicians, Annie Haslam's soaring soprano, John Tout's delicate acoustic piano playing, and John Camp's aggressive and trebly Rickenbacker bass sound really make this album work for me. Some people have complained about Michael Dunford's approach to the guitar but I actually like his folky strumming on the acoustic - it works well with the material. In addition to the core musicians, guest Andy Powell plays electric guitar on Ashes are Burning, and various pieces of an orchestra are featured here and there.

The six tracks on the album range in length from 3'34" to 11'24" (with most in the 3-7 minute range) and feature haunting melodies and soft acoustic textures, with some heavy bass playing. In general the overall style is that of progressive rock, with a great deal of English folk influences and European classical. In fact, there are a number of classical sounding melodies scattered throughout the album that sound awfully familiar - I am sure that if I took out some recordings by (for example) Debussy or Prokofiev, I would probably unravel the mystery. My favorite tracks include the proggy Ashes are Burning with it's churchy organ work and Can you Understand? although the rest of material is pretty strong.

This album is strongly recommended to prog fans that do not mind a lot of classical and folk mixed in with their prog rock. Other great albums include Turn of the Cards (1974); Scheherazade and other Stories (1975); and Novella (1977).

Listen for the drumming provided to you by Horsemouse. His "riddims" are far more superior to most during this time frame. Adding the traditional live recording vibe with accompanying lyrics by Burning Spear. Any reggae savvy listener can sit back and enjoy this album.

An Album.......2006-05-19

That's how to describe this. An Album. In an era where lowest common denominator junk gets played on the radio, and anyone can review any piece of garbage on Amazon, giving it 4 or 5 stars when it deserves 1 or 2, this is a great change. Granted it's some 30 years old, but it's still as relevant today as it was when it was released, which is just one of the great things about it. This is the definition of an album in which the sum is greater than the parts. Thankfully, far greater. As individual songs, the 2 chord deals doesn't work out real well. They seem boring, repetitive, etc. However, when you listen to it from start to finish, they flow together, and blow you away. From start to finish, you feel revitalised, like you just learned a new life lesson, that maybe in the end, it truly is feeling that counts, and that is the essence of great music.

A top five album.......2006-01-27

Ever purchase an album, listen to it, and get totally blown away? For anyone exploring roots reggae, this is an absolute must album. Marcus Garvey embodies everything that roots reggae represents: great beats and powerful lyrics. Buring Spear created many fine albums, but this one is a statement. This is one of my top five albums of all time - no matter the genre.

I would also suggest The Congos "Heart of the Congos" as another must-have roots album. One of producer Lee "Scratch" Perry's finest works.

A Unique Classic.......2005-02-03

Some argue that the reputation of this release rests on the fact that it was created by the first Jamaican artist other than Bob Marley to compose songs that were written specifically for an album. Before Marley, Jamaican artists didn't have "albums" as a rule. If a singer had enough popular singles they might be rereleased together on an entire record later, but albums were rarley made.

The difference with Burning Spear (Winston Rodney and his back-up singers, Rupert Willington and Delroy Hinds) was that the strength of his music was never with singles. A Burning Spear song by itself didn't mean as much until you put it in a group of Burning Spear songs. It was with albums that Spear would gain his popularity and here was his first big breakthrough. It was a huge success in Jamaica and afterwords, Spear was signed up with Island Records until he gradually reached international fame.

This album may not be for everyone. The music is jerky and old sounding. The tracks are short and often repetitive. But there's something ethereally timeless about this set. The music seems to transcend space and time to make us beleive that it's always been there. As if Winston Rodney brought it with him from his premortal existance to be shared with the world in our present day. Perhaps I was going through a transitional period in my life when I first heard it, but anything Rodney ever did afterword (even if it was just as good or better) would never feel like this. It is truly a unique masterpiece.

P.S. The accompanying band, "The Black Desciples" also deserves mention in helping Burning Spear accomplish this unequaled acheivement.

i happen to think that part of this album's greatness lies in the fact that it is not bob marley or jimmy cliff (not to knock these amazing artists, just to point out difference). the rhythms, song structures, and singing style are a real departure from pop/r&b/soul song structures that are found elsewhere among reggae's superstars. also, the horns on this album are superb.

Bob Marley is surely the one reggae artist everyone has heard of and his "Legend" CD is usually the first reggae CD new fans of the genre buy, myself included. Burning Spear has a bit more of an edge than Bob, more like the true vintage reggae sound (more along the lines of Marleys "Burnin'" album). This is a good place to start with Burning Spear "Marcus Garvey", "Christopher Columbus", "Red, Gold, and Green" are among the best tracks on here. Really good reggae.

Buring Spear: Roots Reggae.......2002-04-29

Burning Spear produces some of the best roots reggae currently available. Period. His songs are based upon his beliefs in the teachings of Marcus Garvey and the essence of Rastafarianism. For the enlightened, history, and the meaning of history, is recorded in his music. His words are recited by those in the Carribean, sometimes only to gather a few dollars from the tourist trade. Burning Spear should be quoted because of his meaning and revelence to all cultures.

As an owner of most of Buring Spears' catelog, I would highly reccomend "Hail HIM", which in my opinion is the best reggae / rasta album ever produced.

A Living Legend.......2001-08-12

First of all, if you haven't heard Burning Spear, I suggest ANYTHING by this great band. With some bands you must be very selective about what you buy when you see so many releases, but Burning Spear has not put out one single bad release and I have nearly all of them. As an avid collector of reggae (mostly Jamaican roots) I rank Spear among the absolute best. His music is hypnotic, fun, serious, playful, and deeply rooted in the Spirit of Jamaica and Africa. The horns do not intrude, but balance the music. Spear's voice is beautifully mesmerizing, and adds a vocal decoration to the music. Now after hearing the cd and finding out what I am talking about, you must EXPERIENCE Spear. To witness this legend live is truly a must. Spear has a presence like no other. I have witnessed quite a few reggae concerts and none quite equal the presence of Burning Spear. Highly recommneded band coming from one with quite a bit of reggae experience. One Love!

With a delicate trill that occasionally recalls Iris DeMent's, the former singer for the Reeltime Travelers (who appeared on the Cold Mountain soundtrack and tour) teams with producer/multi-instrumentalist Dirk Powell for an impressive solo debut. Glad To Have This Collection.......2007-05-12

Yes, I'm glad to have this collection of songs to listen to whenever I want. We saw Martha Scanlan perform at a Midnight Ramble in Woodstock, and her songwriting got to me. The venue ran out of her CDs that night, so I had to get it from Amazon. I remember loving one song in particular--how the words seemed to tumble down the chord, for lack of a better description. So I was so happy when that ended up being the first song on the CD--"The West Was Burning". Song after song will hook you. Her lyrics are evocative, her voice transporting, and her rhythms varied and familiar. Of course, since Levon Helm is her drummer, she had an advantage!
