Calling All Stars
Editorial Reviews
Product Description
'Calling All Stars' is the first collection of pop songs in ten years by the keyboardist/lyricist of The Suburbs, a Minneapolis band born of the late 70's/early 80's new-wave/punk scene. Enter the satellite world of 'Calling All Stars', orbiting a distant home planet in search of 'another of my kind'. The dreamy transmissions arriving here are powerful and plush - a ghostly orchestra of sounds, highlighted by twangy guitars, ethereal brass, and darkly expressive vocals. Manifesto Records.

What's not to like?.......2007-07-06
Calling All Friends has been in rotation on my radio station for awhile now, so I figured I'd give the band a try.
I was glad I did, it was everything I expected and more. Beautiful melodic songs with harmonies and a few catchy hooks that I find myself humming unexpectedly. Definite replay value and there were no songs that I did not enjoy, but about 3-4 that are really standouts.
It will be interesting to watch this band progress and how it matures, will it keep the sound or will it morph into something else (like how Kenny Loggins changed as a solo act from Loggins & Messina)? While comparisons to the Eagles or CSN&Y (or even Loggins & Messina) are easy to make, I'd probably describe it to younger listeners as a cross between Train and something else -- maybe Counting Crows.
wonderful harmonies and mellow sound.......2007-06-08
If you're looking for grinding rock, skip this. If you're looking for a one-voice album, skip this. If you're looking for anything short of beautiful harmonizing and mellow, breath-relaxing musical compositions, skip this.
I saw this cd at Starbucks and kept passing it by. I thought, wrongly, that it was a country album by Texas singers. Erm. Cut off my legs and call me shorty--I was wrong! This cd reminds me of the Eagles more than anyone else, but without the rock vibes. It's in the harmonies, that similarity.
You'll love it!
I'm moving on................2007-06-01
Low Stars get 5 stars !!! This is a very smoothe, relaxing, soulful CD and nothing makes me calm down and mellow out as nicely as this does....The lyrics are at times very sad, like the guy who is moving on and leaving his girl behind, but there are happier, sexier, more wishful songs as well. It very much reminds me of "The Thorns" who put out a fabulous heavy-harmony CD a few years back.
I would not call this a "rock" album by any means but the instrumentals are incredible, the voice and harmonies superb, and it feels like you're listening to a bunch of classy guys....The entire CD speaks of excellence......You probably shouldn't miss this one....I'm glad I didn't !!
Top notch acoustic rock.......2007-05-25
I first heard these guys on tv while flipping channels at about 1:00 a.m. a few weeks ago. They were doing "Calling All Friends" and I loved the rich (if a bit loose) harmonies that they created live. I ordered the cd the next day and was not at all disappointed in the rest of the material on the album. You can hear tinges of everybody who ever picked up an acoustic guitar in their music - from the Eagles to CSN&Y to Dan Fogelberg to the Bacon Brothers Band - but these guys have created their own identity with this record. And they have shown remarkable versatility in styles in doing it. The first track, "Tell the Teacher" starts with a vintage CSNY opening before seguing into more of a Dirt Band style verse. There's not a throwaway track on this album, which displays strong songwriting from start to finish, but to my ear the heart of the cd is tracks 9 through 11. When I hear music like this on late night tv, it makes me wonder what in the hell some of the major radio station programming guys are thinking about.
Good Acoustic Rock.......2007-05-09
I first heard of these guys when they opened for Edwin McCain at Amos' Southend in Charlotte in April. We were surprised when they came onstage with just four acoustic guitars and started playing. They are a kind of throwback to some of the better sounds of the past and a welcome and pleasant change from much of today's popular music. They also sound the same live as they do on the CD and that's a definite bonus. This is definitely a CD that belongs in your collection and if you get the chance, go to one of their performances. You won't be disappointed.

Good Stuff.......2002-08-04
Good stuff, but what's a suburb without the Suburbs? But, the band is getting back together!
A Talent That Deserves To Be Recognized.......2002-03-26
4.5 Stars.
One would excpect that since Chan Poling comes from one of Minneapolis's most celebrated bands (The Suburbs) that a solo cd would have been offered up long before this (The Suburbs broke up in 1987, I believe).
Well, the wait was well worth it. This is a finely crafted album. The sound is very lush. It sometimes has somewhat of a loungey feeling to it (and that is not a bad thing at all).
The other magnificient aspect of this album is Chan's voice. He posseses a wonderful baritone that is sometimes reminiscent of Brad Roberts from Crash Test Dummies or Mark Sandman from Moprhine.
