Redefining the genre.......2007-05-26
Being sick of hear the same radio-friendly reggaeton I decided to try Tego after hearing some samples on iTunes. You cannot put this album in the same sack, this one is a awesome mix of latin music, salsa, reggae, hip-hop and rap.
Imaginative and well-thinked lyrics, nice flow and the risk to make different things make The Underdog/El subestimado a great album. The ony flaw is the lame collaboration with Yandel... I only pass this thing because he also make a song with salsa's "pharao" Oscar D'Leon, correcting his mistake. My final advice? Give this album a try!
Outstanding tracks: Slo mo', Payaso, Veo veo, Oh Dios.
The last one was better but still worth 12 bucks!!!!.......2007-04-02
This was another good enough outing for Tego but he could do much better. The guy is too good to just have okay albums they should all be instant classics and this one just isn't his break out cd "El Abayarde" was testament to his nastiness on the Mic. The last Cd had its moments this one does to but they just aren't as bright.
Modern without leting go tradition.......2007-01-10
Great reggeaton artist. With lots of caribbean flavor on his music. He doesnt forget about our origins, he fusions his music with african rithms.. very populars in the puertorrican community. Full of latin flavor. Even have one salsa song. Colaborates with Don Omar, Danny Fornaris, and other great reggeaton artist and compositors.
Creative Latin Hip-Hop Mix.......2006-10-28
Good job Tego, now drop the lame a**, two-beat, one-dimensional reggaetón garbage and go with the latin hip-hop and salsa beats. Tego shines and shows his true colors when he rhymes over the smooth hip-hop tracks. His talent is wasted when he does reggaetón. If he goes hip on his next album, he'll definately make a name for himself here in the states and may even surpass Daddy Yankee -- who is all image and no talent.

*******Another Reggaeton Classic*******.......2006-02-23
I just started listening to Reggaeton sometime last year and it has been an amazing experience. Coming from a carribean country -->Belize
<-- I truly feel reggaeton. Reggae was my previous preferred genre, but accessibility to the reggae clubs I like is limited where I live, however there are a bunch of reggaeton spots and they are all playing great music! It is a combination of all the best music and understanding Spanish is not necessary to enjoy the rhythm and soul in these artists....I especially like Dominicana...
Reggaeton went international because of this..........2005-11-14
Tego graduated from a Puerto Rico music conservatory with percussion as his concentration. It certainly shows as he rips apart any beat on his way with words you hadn't heard in ages but all greatly intertwine and add to his lyrical flavor. People that do not understand spanish will miss on much of the experience but any person that likes good beats and good rhyming has to appreciate the hability of this ugly but talented dude who with this CD sparked the world's curiosity for reggaeton that led to Daddy Yankee, Don Omar, Ivy Queen and Wisin y Yandel hit the Euro and North American airwaves and hit deep within the spanish speakers and international beat lovers alike. A great intro to how much fusion can go into this genre and how it ties into Puerto Rican folklore (the established salsa soneo, the Jamaican dancehall/reggae & the U.S. hip hop). A must-have CD for anybody that wants to get a taste of reggaeton and a guaranteed party maker. If you understand how Tego rhymes, an ecstatic musical experience. Oh, and about Cali Playa 415's review (again), throughout his review history (check it out if you're interested why such strong feelings) he is basically a hip hop fan that is a reggaeton hater and has continually given one-star reviews to the genre's best performing records, most of those ratings in a couple of days, maybe because of having lost a rhyming battle to a reggaeton singer or some similar traumatic experience :-). The validity and objectivity of his reviews are for you the readers to judge. Give yourself a chance to like reggaeton and start with Tego's 2003 record, you won't regret it.
He's no Tupac, Biggie, or Nas.......2005-11-13
People need to stop comparing this fool to Pac, Biggie and Nas. I think thats an insult to those artists and completely untrue. First off, this album is not hip hop its Spanish music. The beats are not even up to par on this album. Also, this guy doesn't know if he wants to be Domincan or Puerto Rican. I want to make a comment to Gorrilla; if you shook his hand tell him to put music out for "everyone" to listen to.
Don't waste your money on this album. Buy a Sean Paul, Capleton, or Sizzla album instead.
REALEST MC IN HIP-HOP AND REGGAETON.......2005-10-27
I've had this CD for over 3 years now, and I never get bored of listening to it. This is the absolute best reggaeton cd ever created. The fusion of dope lyrics and bumpin' beats make this the equivalent to a Illmatic cd or Ready to Die. I have to say that when I first heard Tego, I wasn't feeling him. I hated his nasaly voice and his repetitive lyrics. Then my sister bought El Abayarde, and that's when I became a religous fan. Sounds corny, but I shaked Tego's hand when I went to a concert a year ago. 5/5 stars, Favorite songs are Abayarde, Pa' Que Retozen, Loiza, No me Explota, Guasa Guasa, Dominicana, Cambumbo. I basically like every song. I never skip ahead to any song. ABSOLUTE BEST CD. YOU CANT LOVE REGGAETON AND NOT HAVE THIS CD.
This dude is str8 snappin, even though I don't understand a single word of it!!!.......2005-10-23
As someone who listens primarily to southern rappers such as TI, Three Six Mafia, and Ludacris, this CD is clearly a reason to believe that you don't have to understand the lyrics to a song to like it. I first heard Tego when he did a collabo with 50 Cent a while back. At first I was like, wtf? I wasn't feelin' it at first, but the more I listened, the more I started to like it!! I admit, I couldn't understand WTF this dude was sayin, but it was cool. It sound like he was flowin so thats when I realized that I had to hear more of this dude to see what's up. Man, you gotta listen to it! It's hot. Some of the tracks are a little odd to listen too (especially if you aren't used to hearing reggaeton)but the beats is all dope. I wouldn't mind beatin' a few in da ride either. There that good. My favs is Guasa Guasa (it sound like he talkin about smokin trees!is he?) and Gracias (at least I can understand the title). I also like Dominicana too, that one is real hot.
Because of this CD, I have been introduced to Reggaeton which I didn't even know exisited until I heard this and Oye Mi Canto wit NORE on it. I gotta say, if you gone listen to it, this got some of the best Reggaeton out there.

Tego is one of the BEST!.......2006-05-23
As far as the kid further below saying these artists need to put music out in English, I'd just like to say, I think Tego's style, AS IS, is fantastic and probably wouldn't sound as hot in english...and I'm not biased, I'm white and lots of his stuff I don't understand at first, but it is that good that I'll go to the trouble of translating it so that I can listen to it and understand. As a lyricist, I think he is very profound. Tego's music is HOT and his style is unique and sounds amazing!! If you don't like it, fine, leave it as a matter of personal taste in genre, but you can't put it down because you simply don't understand it. Many people who don't speak Spanish still enjoy his music. As for the album, it's great, just like all Tego's stuff.
Right............2006-01-30
This kid below is trying to make a statement on the culture and following of Reggaeton music. Problem is, nobody knows what the hell he's talking about. I think he's mad that he wouldn't be able to decipher the Spanish lyrics, and if he does speak Spanish, he'd realize that Tego is less Reggateon per se and more hip-hop. Tego IS a straight lyricist and from what I've heard, doesn't make dance music. If this Cali kid would listen to the music first and quit trying to be editor of XXL, then he'd figure this out on his own. Tell me who has compared Tego to Nas or Biggie or 2pac--surely this person making the comparison needs to get their head checked. Anyone buying into that claim and feeling the need to dispute it by posting on Tego's CD review page needs to listen to more Tego and quit listening to what people think of him. You're whack, kid...and your rants on these pages have nothing to do with Tego's music, just about what you think that his music isn't. Well, in that light, I'll tell you what your posts are NOT: relevant to the topic at hand. Do less typing and more thinking cholo...
This isn't hip hop music.......2005-11-20
I don't understand why reggaeton artists think their music is profound and true hip hop. Reggaeton music is not a culture. Reggae and true dancehall music is a culture and those artist make music for everyone to listen to. If artists like Tego Calderon and Daddy Yankee want to put out music for everyone to hear. At least put out material in english y'all. Also, I've been labled a "Reggaeton Hater" just because I'm voicing my opinion on the genre of music. All I got to say to those people is, you guys don't know what the hell you're talking about.
Aguanta Que LLego Grandpa.......2005-07-09
The most underated artist in the genre--the black horse of the movement. But behind the scenes everyone knows who the godfather is--a REAL hip hop artist making great music. With all the real Puerto Rican flava and some lyrics that you wouldn't understand unless you lived on the island. 100 % Criollo ---el Abayarde reminds us of what being Boricua means--It won't be easy for him to crossvoer like DY, and most people outside of PR may not understand what the hell he's talking about. But he is reaching the people he is targeting. Not for everyone but true boricuas will enjoy it.
Good Album, but not better than El Abayarde.......2005-04-06
Great album..but as someone else said they are many remixes from old songs and they dont make the song better..the album is still good, Tego always bring heat!!

Product Description
Gabriel Cabezas and Juan-Miguel Hernandez are conquering a new horizon with the release of their new CD, Moyugba Orisha. Every year the Sphinx Competition, held in Detroit, offers young Black and Latino classical string players a chance to compete under the guidance of an internationally renowned panel of judges and to perform with established professional musicians in an encouraging setting. Cabezas, a cellist from the Chicago area, is the First Prize Laureate of the Junior Division of the 2006 Sphinx National Competition. Hernandez, the Gold Achievement winner of the Senior Division, is a native of Montreal, Canada, now studying the viola in Los Angeles. The artists both participated in the Sphinx Gala Concert in October of 2006 on the stage of New York's renowned Carnegie Hall. Hernandez is also a part of the Harlem Quartet. Moyugba Orisha, released by CMU's White Pine Music, is a musical rendition of the way that culture can be expressed through music. Many of the pieces such as "La Revuelta Circular," have Latin roots. The composer, Claudia Calderón, describes this piece as "the resonance of sounds from ethnic harps," combining cultures from Madagascar and the central regions of Venezuela. Several of the recordings are world premieres, including the title work and Japanese-American composer Paul Chihara's "Sonata for Viola and Piano." The recording sessions took place in CMU's Staples Family Concert Hall. Accompanying Cabezas and Hernandez on the release are CMU faculty members Alexandra Mascolo-David and Rúbia Santos. Both pianists contribute culturally to the album, Mascolo-David hailing from Portugual and Santos from Brazil.

An overlooked opera.......2006-05-04
"Sly" is a great opera that is overlooked and not produced as often as it should be. We saw Domingo sing Sly at the MET and was so impressed we bought this CD down in the gift shop! I like this CD production - the live aspect is good, in my mind. One can picture oneself at the opera house. I can't wait until there is another production to see this opera again!
Carreras-Intelligence triumphs over vocal decline!.......2002-03-15
A mesmerizing portrait by a still mesmerizing tenor! A gem of an opera, if you can, get the video too. It's AMAZING!
really not so great.......2001-05-22
This opera appears to be having a vogue as a vehicle for, how to put it tactfully, tenors in their declining years - Domingo is about to try it at the Met - and Carreras has been performing it at a variety of opera houses. This recording is taken live from a performance in summer 2000 at Barcelona. Taking a theme from Shakespeare's Prologue to 'The Taming of the Shrew', librettist Forzano prepared this tale of Christopher Sly initially for Puccini, who rejected it. Sly falls asleep dead drunk at a lowly inn, only to wake up in the grandest finery, victim of a practical joke.It all ends badly - and doesn't really add up, emotionally, dramatically or musically.
Wolf-Ferrari's music in this opera could be described as 'characters in search of an author' - it despatches the dramatic events efficiently enough, but with a lack of personality, or of real command of pacing. The invention, occasionally arresting, is in general short-breathed and fails to take wing where you would expect. The review in 'Gramophone' magazine mentions that the first act could almost be worthy of 'Falstaff' or 'Gianni Schicchi' - well, I beg to differ - there is more invention in 30 seconds of 'Falstaff', or 2-3 minutes of 'Schicchi' than here. The strange third act, almost totally a monologue for Sly, doesn't satisfy as a culmination: a work that starts out darkly playful suddenly becomes pure melodrama and this strikes me as faulty story-telling and inconsistent characterization.
'Sly' undoubtedly is a vehicle for a star tenor, and Carreras does sing with burnished tone, insight and great nobility (perhaps too much for a drunken sot!)and there are not too many high-lying forays that expose him. Sherrill Milnes retains his distinctive timbre, and does what he can with a role that yields diminishing returns, but comes a cropper whenever he ventures above the stave. Isabelle Kabatu as Dolly was perhaps exciting live, her thick timbre doesn't seems to record well and can be harsh and unlovely, though she seems to improve in the last act. Some of the cameo parts, mainly in the first act, are atrocious! The singers portraying John Plake and Rosaline - well, the latter almost sounds like a send up; don't they hold auditions in Barcelona? The orchestral writing is often austere, and some exposed passages don't bear scrutiny in this performance. Perhaps live, in the presence of a star performer this work can be compelling, but I don't rate it an interesting listen on CD.

Alessandra Marc is amazing.......2006-05-30
Alessandra Marc delivers an amazing performance here, especially her In Questa Reggia...some people complain about her vocal scooping, however it really isn't a huge deal here. I think that Ms. Marc is THE diva of the century, with the vocal heft to rip the roof off any opera house. Her other recordings are fantastic, especially the final scene of Salome. The tenor is just okay here, nothing like Jose Carreras in his Calaf with Montserrat Caballe as Turandot. The rest of the forces are good, also. Alessandra definitely steals the show. Check this out for sure!
Great live Performance!!.......2006-05-04
This recording took place in 2002 at the Euskalduna Auditorium in Bilbao, Spain. Alessandra Marc (See also her Arias CD called "An American Diva") has the presence and vocal power of a Turandot in the Eva Marton or Ghena Dimitrova tradition. On the other hand, Ainhoa Arteta's Liu has all the lyric beauty it should have. There is something about Arteta's voice that reminds me greatly of Ileana Cotrubas. It's the naturalness of the emission of the voice and the apparent fragility it conveys. Beautiful voice indeed. All the other roles are adequate. The Chorus is great as well and the sound is excellent. Highly recommended.
