Though the name "Indigenous" reflects frontman Mato Nanji's heritage as a member of the Nakota tribe, on Chasing the Sun he sounds more like a member of the tribe of Stevie Ray Vaughan soundalikes. Not that this is necessarily a problem when the songs are so strong, the singing so soulful, and the guitar playing so striking. (Even Vaughan was initially typecast as an imitator of Jimi Hendrix, whose influence permeates the guitar tone on this album's "I'll Be Waiting" and "Leaving.") Whereas Indigenous earlier featured Nanji fronting a family band, these days he pretty much is Indigenous (though sidemen still include his bassist brother Pte). The opening "Runaway" channels so much of Vaughan's signature style that listeners might well mistake it for Stevie Ray, though the album ultimately extends its range to encompass the Allmanesque balladry of "Come on Home" and the bluesy twist given Bob Dylan's closing "Born in Time." What he lacks in originality, Nanji offsets with chops and conviction. --Don McLeese

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Indigenous is AMAZING.......2007-05-20

I recently saw Indigenous play out at the Roxy near Tahlequah, Oklahoma during the Cherokee Nation annual festival and he was truly amazing. It is not often that you see a lead singer who also plays lead guitar, and who writes his music as well. He is, all around, an excellent musician. I recommend this particular CD highly. Some of his earlier ones I was not as big of a fan, but he is growing and maturing in his music. I plan to see him again on June 8 at Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa. I am sure it will be an awesome concert.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-04-05

I remember when CDs first came out - one of the big selling points was that they would last forever. Well, I proved that one wrong listening to "Things We Do" often enough in the two years after I bought it that it started to skip in places no matter how much I cleaned it. The guitar pyrotechnics were great, the riffing was top-notch, the band was tight and provided great accompaniment to Mato's soulful deliveries. So naturally I was drooling in anticipation when I saw a new Indigenous release coming out. I wasn't particularly impressed with the self-titled disc, but I chalked it up to sophomore slump. Now I see that it's more of a linear progression, or should I say regression. The new disc is listenable, but it just doesn't reach out and grab you by the throat like "Things We Do" did. The backing band plays it so straight, they could be autopilot. Now blues is a pretty straightforward format in a lot of ways. We appreciate it because its pure. But it does have an element of swing to it when its done properly. That's why you can often two-step or swing dance to it. This is like having Rycrisp crackers after a banana split. There's a lot missing from what was there before. I guess the key word here would be "uninspired". I'm going to go back and dig out my old disc again and fast forward past the parts that skip... I wish I would have spent the money on a new copy of that instead.

4 out of 5 stars Great covers and great style.......2007-01-19

This is a great rocked-out blues album doing serious homage to Stevie Ray Vaughn. I'm very glad the artist is now branching out on his own. He's definitely got the talent to do this and I'm looking forward to seeing more of this happen as he earns his place in the music world.

1 out of 5 stars Egotistical Blowhard.......2006-12-10

I went to see Mato's reinvented Indigenous 2 nights ago with high expectations. I have been a fan and seen him many times with the family members that he has since DUMPED because someone got him to believe they weren't good enough. The sound mix was so BAD it was painful to my ears, it physically hurt. Mato came off so look-at-me egotistical it would have been laughable if it wasn't so offensive. New band members - nothing special, certainly no great improvement from his family which he obviously does not understand was a portion of his band's original appeal. I walked out on a 15 dollar ticket to save my ears. In the past couple days I have visited with a few people and they ALL said the same word "DISAPPOINTING".
In summation - I highly recommend the early Indigenous recordings. I strongly advise you to AVOID the new and supposedly improved "Mato" and any new recordings. Hopefully he will come back down to earth and rediscover his roots but I doubt it. I gave 1 star only because the review format forced me to.

1 out of 5 stars Mato Rated with SRV, Clapton,. Hendrix??.......2006-10-10

This is what the front of my new Indegenous cd says. Early on, there was Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton, Then later Carlos Santana and SRV. Heres a new name to throw on the blues rock alter Mato Nanji.
Are you serious? This is a misprint!! I demand my money back! This cd blows! I have been hearing about Mato lately and figured I couldnt go wrong! This cd is a joke. I could play better then this guy and that aint no laughing matter! I spent $19 dollars on this false advertisemnet. I should sue the record company for placing that quote on the front of the cd. I will never spend any money on this guy again. Is this what a recoed company has to do to sell something. Geeesh. Mato has a horrible voice to boot. This guy dont even come close to the guitarists it advertises. If you want a guitar player that fits in with SRV, Santana, Hendrix, Clapton, check out Joe Bonamassa!! Joe would blow this guy completely off the stage! Please people, get real! There are way too many other great guitarists that are much better these days. If you wants some blues that is just another Texas style guitar player buy this but Im getting burned out on SRV knockoffs!

    Album Description

"Montana Skies"--cello and guitar--This CD is an homage to the "road trip". Not only the literal road trip, but also the metaphorical "road trip" of life. We've learned a lot on both so far, but mostly we've learned that it's never about the place, but always about the people. Much of this music was written and arranged on our cross country tour in the spring of 2004 and draws from the sights and sounds that we absorbed as we crisscrossed the US. We hope you'll enjoy the ride...

    5 out of 5 stars Innovative.......2007-05-19

This duo is one of the most innovative and creative ensembles performing today. The cello/guitar combination is refreshing and inventive. Rich textures and imagery abound. Great music; highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Expressive, Engaging, and ExtraOrdinary!.......2005-03-10

With beautiful sound, Montana Skies flawlessly combines cello and guitar into melodies that depart from the ordinary classical. One can feel the passion they have for their music. The music resonates within one, long after the last note. I find myself humming the tunes all the time! There is something for everyone on this album. In these stressful times I use it at work and in the car to relax and detach from the hectic day-to-day. Aptly named "Chasing the Sun" brings some sun into my day every time I play it.

5 out of 5 stars Must-have album for acoustic lovers!.......2005-01-23

This album is the follow-up to their self-titled debut, and it is just as fun, melodic and enchanting as the first...only better. Truth be told, I am a musician myself have begun touring with these guys, tagging along wherever I can as their pianist....that's how much I enjoy their music and working with them! This CD is a great addition to your acoustic collection and a great way to discover Montana Skies. I keep this CD in my car and find myself turning it often on a long drive.

At this point Karan Casey has carved out a name for herself that is separate from her old band Solas. Her past solo efforts have been solid as the singer makes new and old material her own, particularly on the spare ballads. Here the singer ups her creative stock with a capella versions "Brown And Yellow Ale" and "Jimmy Whelan," both are standouts that showcase the soprano's voice at its most lilting and musical. On the rest of Chasing The Sun, she's solidly backed by her acoustic working band and a few guests. While the music has a strong traditional bent to it, Casey wades through modern themes in her lyrics (six songs are Casey originals) that include such atypical imagery as F16s, a vengeful Mother Earth and Palestine as well as more traditional ones like drink and the love of a good woman. Casey makes her points beautifully and incisively throughout, only reaffirming her status of one of today's great Celtic singers. --Tad Hendrickson

4 out of 5 stars Chasing the Sun by Karen Casey.......2005-08-02

This album had quite a different mood from the rest of her albums. It was a lot brighter. Melodious as usual and very cool.

5 out of 5 stars Her best solo album yet!.......2005-05-14

I bought this album because I fell in love with Karen Casey's voice on her previous solo albums. This CD features a much more modern edge, but her voice is still enchanting as ever. Most of the songs have a slow pace, which I think allows her voice to soar beautifully through the heartfelt lyrics (most of which she wrote herself). She seems to have fallen away a bit from her traditional ballads, but the resulting sound and feel have not altered. If you have enjoyed Karan Casey's previous solo albums, I strongly encourage you to add this to your collection. If this will be your first then I assure you that you will not be disappointed.

    5 out of 5 stars Incredibly Unique.......2007-02-15

I have never written a review on Amazon before but I am so impressed with this work by Chris Poland that I felt compelled to do so. I wasn't crazy about his other solo cd's. I do think his work with OHM is excellent. But "Chasing the Sun" is uniquely different! I own numerous works by Steve Morse, Joe Satriani and Jeff Kollman, to name just a few. Chasing the Sun is wholly different from these other stylists. It dislays uniquely different artistry. The songs are creative and expressive and Chris Poland's playing is superb! This is one of my absolute favorite cd's. I wish he would release another cd along the same lines. If you appreciate instrumental guitar, I HIGHLY recommend this title.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2005-09-08

I personally think this is one of Chris Poland's best works. It's an album that you can listen to straight through. The fact that it is instrumental should not deter listeners - Poland's guitar leads are so searing that they create their own vocals. A must have for guitar enthusiasts.

5 out of 5 stars One of my Favs Soloist !!!.......2004-04-25

Chris Poland deserves a place in the Sun!!!
One of the must Unique and Fresh players that I know!!!
Listen to it and forget his Megadeth Cross...don't misunderstood me cause i like Megadeth too...but this guy plays in another league.
Amazing player!!!...Do I have to say more????

4 out of 5 stars Another fine set of tunes from the best Megadeth guitarist.......2003-02-26

Chris' playing, along with Gar Samuelson's, is the most underrated aspect of Megadeth. This album is far from the speed metal of "Peace Sells..." or Chris' first solo album because it features Chris playing a variety of different styles from the funky "Hip Hop Karma" to the Spanish flare on "Salvador." His picking is clean, fast and precise, sort of like Eric Johnson, making the whole album smooth. The only problem I have with it is that it really is a slew of demos that Chris recorded over the years, so it doesn't exactly have the flow of his first solo album (ie: a theme that flows through the entirety of the album). The sound quality is excellent, however, so you're not just getting a bunch of tunes Chris put together in his garage on a Sony "my frist boombox." If you're familiar with his previous work, this could open the doors to new exciting things, but obviously, if you're a fan of top notch solo guitar, you already know this.

5 out of 5 stars Chris Poland Rules.......2002-08-18

This is a great album. I think Chris Poland is a brilliant guitarist and is horribly overlooked and under-rated. My favorite songs on this album are Chasing the sun, Robo Stomp, and Wendells place. If you want to hear great guitar playing check this album out. Also be on the look out for OHM, they rule.
