5 out of 5 stars The Return of True Hip Hop.......2006-04-05

There's a revolution goin' on ya'll. One where commericial bullsh$# on the radio is being replaced by those who live for THE ART. This revolt is being led by kats like Nicolay whom from relative obscurity, is single-handedly returning hip-hop to it's rightful owners, the MC. City Lights, from beginning to end, is a concept-like album spanning the range of beat production. From the "Theme" intro to the "Reprise" outro, this is an album that'll make you look up and realize you've been beatin' the same CD in your car stereo for like a month(I know from first-hand experience). Standout tracks include "Fantastic, Memory Lane, The Sopranos, We Can Fly, and the Reprise." All around an amazing experience! Nicolay together with kats like Kev Brown, 9th, Marc Mac and the elders Pete and Primo; will hopefully drive Hip Hop into the next generation before radio drives it into the ground.

5 out of 5 stars Nicolay is on a roll.......2006-03-11

After his work with Phonte on The Foreign Exchange, I didn't see how Nicolay could do better. But he did. The grooves here are slammin'. Phonte's cameo on the CD was a very pleasant surprise. I can't put the CD down.

5 out of 5 stars A NIGHT IN THE CITY.......2006-02-08

Nicolay got beats. You can hate all you want to, but this man has a God-given talent on the boards. Fresh off of "The Dutchmasters" mixtape come his intrumental joint, "The City Lights 1.5". This isn't your regular instrumental cd, as it blends flawlessly in between each track with backdrops of people on the street, car horns and subway cars to give the "feel" of living in the Big City (NYC). Even without the backdrops, the instrumentals alone are the perfect sountrack to the urban landscape. Instead of using the same tired drum patters that have been killed countless times in the past, Nic chooses to improvise and switch up when you least expect it, adding melodic arrangements that places him years ahead of his peers, even using an array of arrangements reminiscient of when cats actually made "music". The standout beats are the big-band horns of "Fantastic", the soaring "Light it Up", the warm "Indian Summer" and "So Far", the construction-at-work of "Band Practice", and "We Can Fly", which gives the feel of the entrance song of the Justice Leage or your favorite superhero. The climax of the album is "Victory" which builds up higher and higher, as if it's the theme to when you've beaten the last level of a game you've been busting your ass on for almost months. For fans of BBE's Beat Generation, even Jazz Enthusiasts, this will be a gem in your collection. SHOUT OUT TO THE JUSTUS LEAGUE.

4 out of 5 stars Phat Beats (4.5 Stars).......2006-02-07

Nicolay has always been nice, but it's hard to create a niche when your crew is standing in the gargantuan shadow of 9th Wonder/Little Brother. Khrysis found his own niche with that last Away Team album (National Anthem) and, in my humble opinion, this should be the album that seperates Nicolay from the rest of the JL pack. I know cats like to compare 9th Wonder to Pete Rock, but I think Nicolay has more of a PR sound than 9th does. 9th's sound is more like mellowed out boom bap while Nic has a more vibrant, soulful sound to it. Vibrant and soulful are pretty much the best descriptions for the sound of the album. There isn't a single bad track to be found on the entire LP.

Only flaws I can think of are the unnecessary interludes where the babbling that's going on actually interrupts a steady flow of dope beats (especially the ones with L.E.G.A.C.Y. on 'em). It's like a teacher slamming a book on your desk while simultaneously snatching you right out of a great daydream. Personally, I would've appreciated the interludes being left off of the album. But that's just me.

City Lights Volume 1.5 is definitely one of the better hip hop instrumental albums out there. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to a great album from a producer who can't possibly continue to be so slept on if he keeps up this pace. I highly recommend adding this album to the collection.

This recording will be a revelation to those who were unlucky enough to catch the staging of Paul Scott Goodman's musical adaptation of Jay McInerney's iconic debut novel in 1999. The show turned the book's drug-fueled, nihilistic portrait of 1980s Manhattan into embarrassing mush. But apparently some thought Bright Lights, Big City was a diamond in the rough, because a studio recording has appeared six years after the production closed. And guess what? The show was worth recording. Goodman's pop-rock score is more varied and flavorful than it first sounded, proving there's something to be said for nipping and tucking. Surprisingly, the ballads and intimate numbers work a lot better than the more uptempo pieces, which still come across as a bit forced. And speaking of revelations--Eden Espinosa, playing three parts, shows a lot more range here than she does in Brooklyn and Christine Ebersole brings punchy, roaring flair to Jamie's boss Clara‹she should do more pop material like this. Kudos also to the wonderful Sherie Rene Scott, who shines in her ballad, "Kindness." Twenty years after the book came out, these lights are shining bright indeed. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Great hidden gem.......2007-03-30

I had heard a few of these songs on Broadway Max on LIVE365 internet radio and fell in love with a few tunes. After buying the album I couldn't be happier! There are great songs with deep lyrics and catchy melodies. The performances are top notch and this recording makes me wish I had seen the live production. If you liked Rent you'll enjoy this cd.

3 out of 5 stars Definitely Fun To Listen To, But Haven't We Heard This Before?.......2007-01-04

The one tragedy that will always plague "Bright Lights, Big City" from now until eternity is that it was written after "RENT;" because of this, it can and will only play second fiddle in the history books to that other, better known rock-musical from the 90s. However, if one ignores the pretty obvious typecasting ("City" Tad = "RENT" Collins, anyone?) and other technical aspects of the show, the music by itself is a gem in the recent rock-musical canon. The amazing thing that struck me about this show is that it kept the tone and the feel for each song distinct and unique while never seriously deviating from the rock/pop genre, an uncommon accomplishment even "RENT" cannot boast.

As noted by other reviewers, the cast leaves absolutely nothing to be desired as far as talent goes, even though some of the actors and actresses were given fairly weak material to work with. However, despite the weakness of the individual songs and characters (of which better breakdowns and descriptions than I could write are found elsewhere) the show as a whole is fairly strong and tight. A very good recording that shouldn't be missed by rock-musical aficionados.

3 out of 5 stars Rock Musical but R rated.......2006-10-11

Great idea, great cast. The songs wonderfully tell the story, while each song could be covered by a rock-pop band of the day. That being said my only major concern is that people buying this CD know the subject matter is more adult than most musicals. It does have a warning on it, but so does Avenue Q, and I dont feel that label is as necessary as this one. All this being said I'm not sure this musical is a glowing gem. It has its moments and I think its more than just a collectors CD, but it shouldnt be the first of a collection. It is definitly one for younger listeners who like the more modern musicals. Favorite Song: "I Hate the French"

4 out of 5 stars Great Rock Album.......2006-07-30

I have only listened to this recording two times through, but I love it. The music and lyrics are so earnest [with the exception of Odeon, which I personally just don't like and garners this recording 4/5 stars] and the real star of this recording is Sherie Rene Scott, who is given beautiful music to showcase her phenomenal voice. Props to Gavin Creel and Christine Ebersole, as well. It's a great recording to have.

3 out of 5 stars Fun musical version of book better than the film adaptation........2006-02-27

Though not of Rent caliber this musical has plenty of rousing and clever songs. Some songs are very funny like the priceless I Hate the French and some rocking tunes peppered with sex and drug references are a nice change of pace from many squeaky clean musical numbers.Maybe not Andrew Lloyd Webber caliber but still a very entertaining underrated musical.

This is a fantastic rock-and-roll record full of everything a disaffected 19 year old needs to hear. It is different, bizarre, morose, literate and most of all musical after about the fourth listen. A rockin' tribute to angst well before Seatle found Teen Spirit.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant, moody fusion of straight-ahead balladry and "nu jazz".......2007-03-28

This is a stunning, innovative album that deserves much more attention than it's gotten. Mainieri's sidemen here are the cream of the crop of the new generation of Scandanavian jazz players who have been influenced by electronica, including Nils-Petter Molvaer, Bugge Wesseltoft, Lars Danielsson, Jan Bang, DJ Strangefruit, and a bunch of other low-key geniuses who regularly play on one another's records. Moody standards like "Naima" and "Flamenco Sketches" fit perfectly with the reflective atmosphere of the originals. If you want to dip your toe into "nu jazz," this is a great place to start. A marvelous album for late night listening, and a taste of the future of music.

    5 out of 5 stars MAGNIFICENT ALBUM!!!!.......2007-03-04

This is truly magnificent!!!, once again Mike Mainieri brings up a recording that reaches all of your senses; The album evolves beautifully from beginning to end, with very high peaks on "I've Seen it all" and "Flamenco Sketches", teamed up with Norwegian sax player Bendik Hofseth(he appears on Steps Ahead-NYC)and a group of other wonderful Norwegian players, Northern Lights is simply one of the best jazz offerings of this year. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

5 out of 5 stars More "Ceora" than "Sidewinder".......2007-02-07

This album may not enjoy the same status as Charlie Chaplin's revered movie of the same title, but it's a session that evokes similar feelings. Like the beloved Tramp, Lee Morgan wins our respect with a performance of warmth and dignity, grace and beauty, sprinkled with moments of gentle humor. His playing on this session anticipates, more than do his immediately subsequent recordings, the composer of the sublimely poetic "Ceora" ("Cornbread," '65).

Also credit Benny Golson, who provided three of the five tunes and the arrangements for the sextet on this date. Beginning with "Lee Morgan Sextet" (Dec, '56) to "City Lights" (Aug, '57), Golson supplied four consecutive recordings' worth of material for the developing session leader--compositions and textures that would showcase the young artist while lending form and focus to his creative energies. After "City Lights," Morgan would continue his prolific recording output but increasingly shoulder the burden--as one of only two horns on "The Cooker" (Sept, '57) and the sole horn on "Candy" (Nov, '57). As much latitude as the gifted trumpeter is given on these last two dates, the formal constraints of "City Lights" prove no less rewarding--if anything, they serve as a luminous foil, setting off the artist's inventions and magnifying his unique talent.

The opening title track sounds like programmatic music for a movie before rapidly developing into a flag-waver for the leader. A mysterious two-note figure bowed by Chambers' bass complemented by Ray Bryant's Twilight Zone tick-tock motif leads to the 24-bar chorus unfolding with a rush, and suddenly George Coleman's tenor sax hits the ground running, the entire scene completed in a head-spinning thirty seconds! Although Coleman's is an auspicious entrance on his first jazz recording, it merely increases the stakes for Morgan, whose trumpet solo crackles with menacing fire, moving to the upper register and going an extra chorus.

Morgan's solo on the lovely, rarely-played ballad "You're Mine You" seems fully capable of standing on its own, especially since Van Gelder's mixing does little to flatter Golson's subtle voicings. The program regains its stride with Golson's "Just By Myself," a straightahead 36-bar medium-tempo piece featuring an extended, beautifully-shaped Morgan serenade. The closer, Gigi Gryce's "Kin Folks," is a lazy-tempo Bb blues that proves a perfect playing field for all soloists--but especially the leader, who squeezes his valves, makes the notes talk, and leaves us with some unmistakable Morgan "attitude."

4 out of 5 stars These "City Lights" Shine.......2006-09-12

For years the only Lee Morgan 1950s Blue Note session available as a single CD domestically has been "Candy" (see my review), but now that has changed with the recent reissue of "The Cooker" (see my review) and now "City Lights" in the RVG series. (Of course all of Lee Morgan's 1950s sessions as a leader were released in the 90s on a now out-of-print Mosaic set.) Recorded less than three months earlier than the aforementioned "Candy" on August 25, 1957, "City Lights" features a powerhouse blowing-date sextet of Lee on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, George Coleman (making his jazz debut in a rare BN appearance) on both alto and tenor saxes, Ray Bryant on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Art Taylor on drums. This album also features the arranging talents of Benny Golson, who additionally contributed three of its compositions. For years, "City Lights" has been among the most collectable of Blue Note LPs -- it does feature one of the best early covers and is his first stereo effort -- but it sat in far too many picture frames on hipster walls than it did on turntables. Now with this CD reissue, it can be enjoyed once more for its music.

5 out of 5 stars A completely overlooked thing. Something from another time........2007-06-13

This CD holds a very unique place in music because first, its a complete aborration from Dr. John's usual style of work, and second, its a certain kind of music of which there is not enough of in the world. Its difficult to explain, especially since it's unavailable to sample here, and believe me, I went all over the internet until I located a couple of samples. But this album takes you to a special place in music that was long ago, perhapse in some golden era. Somewhere deep within a bustling downtown city, long ago and late at night you might have expected to find this music. It would be the sound you heard way up high on the 21st story of a tall skyscraper, fully dressed in the tux of the times with cufflinks and all. There is a big band that playes the tunes of the times, while everyone is arrayed and dancing in modern fashion of the era. You look out of the window of that 21st story building, and you feel like the city is yours for the night.

This is a portion of the picture that this album's spell casts on me. Its a distinguished album of the upmost quaity, sophisticated and shiny. If you're wondering 'how can this be the product of that voo-doo singer they refer to as the good doctor?' well, I offer no explanation. Simply that it is what it is, a total deviation from what our good doctor was known for, and what's more a delightful one. I am convinced that this little known elegency is Dr. John's best work of all time. Every time I tried to like his work, it just wasn't quite what I wanted, but almost. Well, this is the album that delivered. A complete 5 star. And it goes beyond music because it doesn't just offer one artist's sound, it brings with it a whole experience from one golden age, maybe one that's only found in your imagination.

The songs that leave the biggest impressions are as follows:
"Dance the Night Away" is happy, celebrating about long awaited and finally found love in the nighttime streets of downtown.
"Street Side" is found in the suburbs. Street life. Old brown brick buildings serve as the backdrop walls in this story.
"Rain". A cloudy day, depressed against the grey silhouettes of tall buildings.
"Fire Of Love". Love happily ever after. How can things go wrong? It feels like it will last a lifetime. Everything's going to be alright now.
"Sonata/He's a Hero" is a portrait of one slick character. He lives in the spotlight of the nightlife in top hat and tux. Lady's man, lavish and cool.
"City Lights". A sad finish for today, a lonely one. But a bright hope for tomorrow in this big city of adventure.

And as for the musical side of it, well, its all here. One masterpiece of an artist detailed to the last degree. Even the album art is amazing, synchronized to the music's every step. You may or may not love it, or get as much out of it, but it definitely deserves a place among music's finest, even though alot unknown. Try it.

5 out of 5 stars Music To Set the Mood For A Rainy, City Night.......2006-08-04

Dr. John's "City Lights" showcases his late '70's transition from his earlier "Voodoo Rock" period into his emergence as both a composer/performer of smooth, more sophisticated (yet funky) music and interpreter of the American songbook. The majority of the tracks on this CD were composed as part of the good doctor's highly creative colloboration with the late Doc Pomus. Highlights from this CD are "Sonata/He's A Hero," "Rain," and the title track, "City Lights." The mood this long out of print album creates is that of a lonely, rainy city night with an optimistic hope for a brighter tomorrow. Besides the wonderful music, the album art is very cool, also, (I keep my LP copy of this on display in my office!) I highly recommend this to anyone who loves music and especially to anyone who is a fan of Dr. John. Also recommended is "City Lights'" companion album, "Tango Palace," which was recorded during the same time period.

        Album Description

Critics are already talking about this debut as mercury prize potential! Incredible songwriting in the spirit of flaming lips, arcade fire & mercury rev. You might not know his name yet, but you soon will. Windmill (aka 26-year old matthew thomas dillon) is emerging as one of the uk's best singer-songwriters, his music a heady distillation of us indie, early '70s piano-lead melancholia and folk-pop. After numerous homemade albums made for himself and close friends, he took his unique brand of euphoric introspection into the studio with a crack team of musicians (including members of the earlies and former alfie member ian smith) and co-producer, tom knott. Together, they whipped up a storm of lush strings, clashing percussion and cacophonous vocals. Echoing the greats of us indie - built to spill, guided by voices, mercury rev, flaming lips, bright eyes, elliott smith and canadian stars, arcade fire - 'puddle city racing lights' is a record that will stick in your ear and your heart.
