The subtitle of this album is Classic Movie Songs of the Forties, and cabaret veteran Mary Cleere Haran winds her way through many of the most memorable songs of the era, including "That Old Black Magic," "I Remember You," and Judy Garland's "The Boy Next Door" and "On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe," as well as the less familiar Burke-Van Heusen "Sleighride in July." Pianist Fred Hersch leads a gently swinging trio in this lovely tribute to a time gone by. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Mary's BEST.......2003-12-02

The songs are what make this so great, these are rare gems from the 40's, like the Crosby associated "Going My Way"(comlete with verse). Haran's vocie is silky smmoth and speaks right at you, ahe's so smooooooth!!! A great cd, with a great jazz trio!

5 out of 5 stars HER SHINING HOUR.....and you'll never count the minutes.......2002-08-01

it is such a simple concept.....all those movies from the forties....they all had great songs...even the non-musical films...'stella by starlight' came from a very tense movie called 'the uninvited' and 'love letters' came from....well, 'love letters', and i don't ever remember seeing jennifer jones and joseph cotten in a musical....and both of those classic melodies were composedby the same individual -- victor young. it seems that the heroine of this cd learned about those forties flicks from her sister and began watching those all-night movie channels and there it was....the whole idea....on that silver screen inside her lovely brain (it would have to be on a par with that voice of hers) ...and this is the residual (or 'royalties) result. a fabulous trip back in time that you will always find yourself packed and ready to make the trip.....follow mary's mellow brick road of recording and i think you might have the same thought i have.....where is part two? i mean....'stella by starlight', 'love letters', 'my foolish heart', 'you do', 'in love in vain',and...of course....'as time goes by'. now let me get back to watching this movie from l946....no, no...i'm not giving this one away. go for it, mary.....you've got the right decade and the perfect way to express your feelings about it.....black and white movie-wise, that is.

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2001-03-31

Obviously a couple of these reviewers have no idea what they are talking about, or simply like only what they know. What I love about Mary Cleere Haran, besides that sultry voice, is that she deftly mixes well-known songs on this disc (i.e. "The Boy Next Door" and "The Atchison, Topeka, and the Santa Fe") with obscure pieces. I don't want to hear artists repeat what everyone else is doing. Mary Cleere Haran's choice of material is impeccable, and her singing a thing of beauty to the ears.

1 out of 5 stars What a wonderful voice Mary has, but a poor repertoire.......2000-05-23

Mary is a very gifted singer. She is what a cabaret singer should be.

The main concern I have about this cd, is that she choose too many lesser known tunes. Also her trio was not real melodic on a lot of these tunes. There were some tunes where the trio really did some great playing, but not enough...

Recommendation: I can not recommend this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Haran's Best.......2000-01-31

I have all of Mary Cleere Haran's CDs and this is by far the best, though her salute to Lorenz Hart is also fine. Her choice of Hollywood songs, not all of them recorded very often these days, is exquisite. The piano work by Fred Hirsch is wonderful.
