Product Description
Picture the scene if you will, you're sat in your parents' front room in Liverpool with the Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd rolling the spliffs, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention jamming in the corner, and The La's looking on in wondrous bemusement before joining in. Mad? Possibly, but that is the scene that rolls through the mind as The Coral's debut long-player comes to an end. A more disparate and yet strangely coherent collection of moods and styles you will not hear this year outside a supremely eclectic compilation. 'The Coral' is the sound of a band saying 'Why don't we try this' as they attempt to distil all of their influences into one exhilarating musical soup - which is kind of the whole point of debut albums. And while most bands wouldn't dream of throwing in anywhere near as disparate a range of styles, that only makes the end result more unique. Weird but mostly wonderful. 11 tracks. 2002.

3 out of 5 stars A real mixed bag here.......2003-02-14

Only rated 3 stars but still worth owning. You get a little psychedelia here, a touch of ska/punk as well and even some old fashioned reverb guitar reminding me of the early sixties. I hope this doesn't scare you off, because this band is very good. Much better than the recent crop of rockers ie: the Strokes, Vines etc.

4 out of 5 stars Arrrrrrrrrr Matey.......2003-02-07

If you didn't look at the booklet, you could almost envision seeing this album made thirty years ago, somewhere around the end of the 60's. It has a real timeless feel to it. At times it sounds kind of like the Doors - mostly because of the prominent use of the organ in some songs. At times though, it sounds kind of campy and pirate-y (hence the Arrr matey), but I can live with those couple instances. Overall very impressive debut. Good stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Everything but that.........2003-02-05

This band is everything you would want. It's all about the music for them, not about trying to get fame. "Music has been forgotten and been replaced by attitude. I don't care about posing. I don't care about impressing people. I just want to impress myself." - quoted by James Skelly(vocals). Their music is everything but popular. I get sick after listening to the same kind of music. They decide to do the opposite, which makes their music stand out. Honestly I get very picky toward bands, cause there are so many. I have to say that these are one of my favorite bands, and I'll be staying a fan for a long time! ...

5 out of 5 stars Yowzers..........2003-01-21

Well... talk about a surprise... I heard the song "Goodbye" on the radio a few times, really liked it, took a chance on the album... and boy am I glad I did!

I can't claim to be an expert on 60s psych music (I have a H.P. Lovecraft CD, some Doors CDs and early Pink Floyd, but not much else), but I can definately hear the influence in these guys. The vocalist doesn't sound a whole heap like Jim Morrison, but he *sings* very similar to Jimmy, and I would classify the Doors as the closest comparison to The Coral that I could come up with. People may call them clones, but if it's good music, it's good music.

As for the hype, well, I live in Australia and had never heard of these guys except for the one song I mentioned above, which was played a few times on an Australian indie station... 99.9% of Australians would have no idea who these guys are, so I'm certainly unaffected by any hype. This is just plain quality music, and very refreshing after the music of the 90s (with the exception of the likes of Radiohead, Tool et al), and even more-so, the shamefull 80s...Can't wait to hear what else these guys come up with on their follow up, but this is certainly a tough act to follow...

If you are interested in music that's a little "out there", yet whilst remaining wholly accessible, this is the cd for you!

2 out of 5 stars What a load of hype!.......2003-01-08

Though the music is not the same as "Fishbone", I cannot help but think this band sounds like a watered down version of that seminal '80's band. Go get the original and leave this copy on the shelf where it belongs.

I really like Dreaming of You. I think it's even better than last year's Legal Man by Belle and Sebastian for bringing up that feel-good mod mood. Give the kids a break and they'll go far, just wait and see. They just have to get over this sea-shanty phase and they're golden.

5 out of 5 stars magical. it is medicine for todays sickening music.......2003-09-14

once again, they have created an incredible, fresh LP that helps us escape today's mainstream. They have looked to other influences this time though. while their skeleton key EP and self titled LP looked to late 60's california psychedelic, Magic and Medicine looks towards california surf and 60's country music. This record sounds a lot like it could have been a Gram Parsons era Byrds record. The songs work best when heard in context to the rest of the album. otherwise, "pass it on" (the current single) seems and is the best shot for a solid single from this album. I would recommend getting the UK version on double orange vinyl. it is a great buy. also, pick up the lim. edition numbered vinyl of "pass it on" with an acoustic version of "shadows fall" as the b-side.

4 out of 5 stars The Coral - Magic And Medicine.......2003-08-23

an absolutly mind blowing album, lots of feeling, warmth but i felt it lacked some heart even though it made it up prominently lyrically and on its feel good factor. Theres a lot of reference in this album mixing styles like Dylan, Waits, some Echo and The Bunnymen and experimenting with 60's rythyms and beats and also a southern country feel to the album in which i enjoyed.I dont care what anyone says but this album is got to be one of the contenders for best albums of 2003.

4 out of 5 stars No hit singles, but more consistent..........2003-08-15

Just bought the new Coral album and after hearing it, I have to say I'm impressed once again by the youngsters. Even though the album has no immediate hit singles in it (like Dreaming of You), the sound and quality of songs is more consistent that their debut album. There's less variety around but the organ and guitar sounds are still around, as well as the Chilton-esque vocals. They also left out the distortion effects which took away some of the shine of their previous album (Skeleton Key and Goodbye suffered from it). Once again, Kudos for these guys to do something different than the recent music scene is doing. Forget all the punk-ish rehashing done by The Strokes and others and get this one to remind you how rock music should sound.

        5 out of 5 stars Summer classic.......2004-01-30

It's been a good year for Liverpool's The Coral. A mere number of months after their stunning debut comes this, surely one of the singles of the year. "Pass It On" is their state of the universe address, a plaintive plea for understanding. It begins a little like The Beatles' "You Like Me Too Much" but soon becomes its own thing of beauty. Far more low-key than anything on The Coral, they seem to have dispensed that elemental quirkiness which so defined their earlier work. Frontman James Skelly is the real star of this track, his magnificent vocals squarely front and center. Anticipating their forthcoming Magic & Medicine album, "Pass It On" is a summer track for the ages and The Coral have done it again. Was there ever any doubt?
