Customer Reviews:
"Here, There, & Everywhere" it is a must own!.......2007-06-27
As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.
Episode Six is an example of a band that gained more appreciation years removed from the breakup than from their initial run. With future Deep Purple members Ian Gillan (vocals) and Roger Glover (bass) as well as Sheila Carter's more than competent voice the fact the band never achieved more then a cult following is not a reflection on the material they selected for representation.
Episode Six had such diverse musical roots from British Invasion to folk, from psychedelic to the vocal sounds of the 1960's there diversification perplexed record companies. The suits didn't know how they could best be promoted and thus their output would be vinyl singles and never an album of material until Ian and Roger had reached the top of the mountain.
The superlative music included here is taken from 1964-68 demos, radio appearances, and alternates. If you can't trade the lack of sound quality on certain songs for a trip to the musical vaults be forewarned. Many of the radio tracks were actually recorded off a tape machine. If you are a Deep Purple collector of assorted band members previous works and or a fan of superlative cover tunes this is will get a lot of playing time in the home and car.
Episode Six did write their own material but their cover versions of a myriad of legendary songs are a tribute to Ian Gillian's and Sheila Carter's vocal expertise.
"Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)" and Ian Gillian in the same sentence. You bet. Ian does a well rounded vocal for the middle-of-the-road classic.
"Sunshine Superman" is one of Donovan's finest tunes. Gillian and band add some rock flavor and the results are tasty.
"A Hazy Shade of Winter" the tune that Paul Simon penned for Simon & Garfunkel is given an upbeat well conceived Episode Six treatment.
"Satisfaction"/Paint It Black" are the two legendary Stones songs. Episode Six has some fun with a medley and provides a highly spirited rendition.
"Morning Dew" a timeless piece by Tim Rose features a heartfelt vocal by Ian. The Grateful Dead and Jeff Beck have outstanding interpretations of the song but Episode Six can hold their collective heads high on this arrangement.
It is one thing to take on the Doors masterpiece "Light My Fire" however Episode Six decided to add further genius by also covering "Spanish Caravan." "Light My Fire" is presented in a more pop direction and "Spanish Caravan" doesn't attempt to out maneuver Robbie Krieger's flamingo guitar brilliance. It does accomplish the goal of putting their own stamp on a more rock and roll version.
"Here, There and Everywhere" Deep Purple covered the Beatles well with "Help" and "We Can Work It Out." Episode Six shows great taste with their rendition here. For those that unjustly pigeon hole Gillian for being a rock and roll screamer they need to listen to this track several times.
"River Deep Mountain High" would be given an epic version by Deep Purple (Over ten minutes). Episode Six sticks within the three to four minute range and delivers a great interpretation. Phil Spector's song would be a Motown staple and is one of the most noted tunes ever created.
There you go a brief sample of the fifty-one tracks. Be careful as the vault is closing behind you. Need not worry it will reopen once you purchase the CD.
Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

Like the Litter, a grossly underrated band........2007-05-13
This double CD set is a testamony of how a band like Deep Purple soared to the top by adding two members of Episode Six. Episode Six has the beautiful harmonies of the likes of the Mamas & the Papas, Peanut Butter Conspiracy, However with a "Bareknuckle barroom brawling attitude."
Roots of Deep Purple? Here it is!.......2007-04-03
Years ago I bought "The Complete Episode Six" in order to hear the early years of Ian Gillan. That album is a collection of all the band's polished, released-for-the-market singles and has a very British 60s pop sound. Gillan's voice is mellow and silky throughout with the exception of the scream on Mozart vs. the Rest and his shaky rough vocals on Mr. Universe. How did he get to the powerhouse vocals of Deep Purple in Rock?
Well, the answers are here on this double CD covering demos and live appearances of Episode Six. While the pop sounds are still heard throughout this collection, a surprising heavier rock sound can be heard on several tracks. By the time Mick Underwood took over the drum seat in '69, the band was cleary going towards the crunchy hard rock sound that would figure on early DP albums. I Am a Cloud and the medly of Satisfaction and Paint It Black feature some pretty heavy music both with respect to guitar sound and vocals. Ian Gillan's rough macho vocals and trademark scream can be heard on a number of tracks. Particularly interesting is the Shiela Carter sung track Something's Got a Hold of My Heart. It is haunting and heavy musically with Roger Glover's bass sounding chunky like on In Rock and Fireball. But better yet is a sampling of the vocal style Gillan would use on Child In Time. Though he sings backing vocals his high octave wails stand out clearly.
While the album is an excellent collection of a wide variety of material from a band that was not afraid to experiment, its major disappointment factor is the sound quality of most of the tracks. Since they are mostly demos and recordings of live TV and radio performances, the sound is muddy and often very lo-fi. This is a shame since some of those tracks, had they been polished of properly, could have been powerful rock tunes of the late 60s. Had this band finally made an album of their later material it would certainly have figured into hard rock history.
