Fine Early Prog.......2006-09-14
Cressida plays very fine early prog. music. Fine heavy organ and mellotron sounds.
As good as many more famous band!
Style is near Camel, Caravan, Gracious etc.
Band members other bands for instance New Seekers, Uriah Heep, Black Widow.
This is essential purchase.
Booklet is rather informative.
Early English rock that incorporates classical, folk, and jazz styles.......2006-05-01
This two CD set combines the albums Cressida (1970) and Asylum (1971), which were originally released on the "progressive" Vertigo label. The original cover art is featured along with excellent sound quality and informative liner notes. Although I am reluctant to describe Cressida as prog rock, their music is somewhat adventurous in its approach and as such, the group sits comfortably alongside other early English bands such as Spring, Gracious, and Beggars Opera. Although I like Spring, Beggars Opera, and especially Gracious much better, this Cressida "two-fer" makes a nice addition to the early English prog rock collection. Then again, I am prog-obsessed and would probably buy just about anything.
Cressida
The music on the first Cressida album is a melodic and sometimes brooding mix of classical, folk, jazz, and rock styles with pretty good vocals spread over 12 short tracks. The lineup includes Angus Cullen (lead vocals), John Heyworth (acoustic and electric guitar), Peter Jennings (harpsichord, Hammond organ, mellotron, and piano); Kevin McCarthy (bass); and Iain Clark (drums). Although the musicians are competent enough, the guitarist is a pretty awful soloist - he just does not have a good working knowledge of scales. In fact, he is more of a rhythm guitarist and does a decent job of that, although his fingerpicked parts on the acoustic are also pretty good. The keyboardist on the other hand, is an excellent player and quotes convincingly from a range of styles including jazz and classical, and as such really holds my interest. Although Peter plays mellotron with string setting, it is used very sparingly albeit effectively. His Hammond organ work is also impressive and the sounds he gets out of the instrument range from a majestic, "churchy" pipe organ sound to an aggressive and growling John Lord-ish tone. My general take on this debut album is that it is an honest effort by a group of individuals that were very interested in pushing the boundaries of rock.
Asylum
For the only slightly more adventurous Asylum album, the previous guitarist John Heyworth had been replaced by the not-significantly-better John Culley. Asylum continues the approach of the debut, and although still a bit gloomy, it is also slightly more energetic with a greater emphasis on instrumental passages. The eight tracks are also a bit longer on average with "Munich" reaching 9'37" and "Let Them Come When They Will" reaching 11'52". One other difference is the absence of the mellotron, which had been, oddly enough, replaced by a real string section (much to my disappointment I might add). Overall, this is an OK album that is (once again) buoyed along by the great keyboard work of Peter Jennings.

'The harm is don, and fare-wel faldefare!'.......2004-11-08
The problem with Walton's Troilus and Cressida is Christopher Hassall's libretto. This may not be entirely Hassall's fault, as Walton himself and the usual quota of busybodies had an involvement in it. The idea of the opera was conceived in the immediate post-war period, and neither scribe nor composer had any previous experience in this particular area. Moreover it is probably a bit unreasonable - up to a point - to complain that the style of writing verges on the ludicrous in a post-war context when the war was not long over, but I simply can't swallow it all the same. If you were a contestant on Quote/Unquote or some such programme and asked to place the lines `Child of the wine-dark wave/Mantled in beauty,/Spirit of Immortal love' who would you guess? Elizabeth Barratt Browning, maybe? Christina Rosetti? Lady Walton in her preface gives us only a certain amount of insight into the turmoil there was over this libretto, but when she lets slip that Walton himself flung out the insult `Ivor Novello' it's easy to believe her. And there is worse to come, e.g. `Come forth a Queen/And nevermore be seen/In base captivity'. The Rev Thomas Morell turned out that sort of lingo for Handel, however it was at the least the standard poetic idiom of their time, and more importantly Morell had a sound instinct for a musico-dramatic plot-line. What Hassall has done, or allowed others to make him do, in that particular respect is a crying shame.
Troilus and Cressida is one of Shakespeare's weaker plays whereas Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde is one of the greatest things in English literature. However it's all too easy to imagine that novices did not feel up to using it as their basis. Hoffmansthal and Strauss might have found it right up their street if they had been looking that way, but what fills me with regret is that I feel that Walton might have been up to it as well. What they all settled for among them was the wrong kind of `Let's Make an Opera'. Basing themselves roughly on Shakespeare they sweep aside all Chaucer's subtlety, clarity and diabolical originality in the characterisation. Cressida and Troilus become an assembly-line operatic soprano and tenor in reach-me-down operatic situations. Diomede is well contrasted with Troilus I suppose, but in an obvious operatic sort of way. Chaucer's contrast is every bit as simple but in a completely devastating way - Diomede does not have to be portrayed as the kind of Hollywood-standard Greek hero he is here (indeed Chaucer calls him `square'), just self-confident with women in wince-making contradistinction from the tongue-tied Troilus. Something survives of Chaucer's strange Pandarus, but only enough to make me feel all the more keenly the contrast between Chaucer's unique inspiration and the feeble shadow of a parish-magazine odester that Hassall manages to seem by comparison.
How this affects the music seems to me to be this way - Walton had an acute sense of the theatrical, as we can hear in, say, his incidental music for Hamlet. Everything is basically right in his scoring here too. It is never stodgy and always resourceful, and he is blessedly light-footed, keeping things moving and avoiding a Wagnerian andante. What can also happen with Walton's theatre-music is that he is prone to overdoing brief effects, such as the ghost in Hamlet. In Troilus and Cressida he has been left with a smoothed-out-average operatic plot lacking any real distinctiveness in the characters or their interaction. Incidents such as the moonlight flit done by Calkas (so spelled) and the prisoner exchange thus come to be significant dramatic incidents in a way they were not for Chaucer in pursuit of his psycho-drama, and either Walton overplays them or maybe he just had no option about that. There is any amount of fine music here, notably in the early stages of Act III, and that is what fills me with the unsatisfied sense that given a more adult challenge he might have made something really distinctive and unforgettable out of it.
It would not be fair to give this fine performance less than 4 stars because the executants and technicians handle it very well indeed whatever my disappointments with the work itself. I love Walton and I love Chaucer and it may be that you will find, as I do, that the intrinsic interest and beauty of the music goes a long way to bringing them closer together.

TRAGICALLY OVERLOOKED PROG-ROCK BEAUTY!.......2004-05-15
My recollection is that this band was made up of a bunch of UK studio musicians; not surprisingly, the playing is excellent throughout. Twelve perfectly crafted songs, each featuring interesting lyrics and concise (and expertly crafted) solos by the guitarist and keyboardist. Guitarist John Heyworth sings one tune and sounds suspiciously like Justin Hayward; keyboardist Peter Jennings plays precise, tasteful solos, and if you love the deep, dark sound of a Hammond B-3 organ, you will love this guy's playing (especially the long solo on the track "Depression", which is absolutely beautiful). This album was the first of two, and definitely the one to have if you're only having one (the second alb, "Asylum", has a different guitarist and the song writing isn't up to par; a bit of the "sophomore slump"). Very strange and cool album art as well.
Lost Gem.......2003-08-19
I heard this album years ago and for some reason it stuck in my mind so I did a search on it. I'm glad to see that it is still available so now I will buy it. The only reason I didn't give this album 5 stars is because I couldn't get enough of the guitar work, the guy did some brilliant stuff but was really subdued in a lot of the material so I'm disappointed. However I will do further searches on this guitarist (John Heyworth) and see what I can come up with. I hope he is still around and still making albums.
UK Organ Prog Classic.......2000-09-04
Forget "easy listening" prog. Vocalist Angus Cullen sings somewhat in the vein of Justin Hayward, but that's where the comparison to the Moody Blues ends. Cressida's debut from 1970 is full of swirling organ, jazzy percussion, great fuzz guitar, and lots of swing. The title track "Cressida" is superb, with its great organ riff and snappy drums. "To Play Your Little Game" and "Lights In My Mind" are in the same upbeat vein. There are also more melancholic moments such as "Depression" and "Down Down". Cressida were one of the early progressive groups to incorporate the mellotron, but they used it to much greater effect on their 2nd album "Asylum". In fact, "Asylum" is their best and most progressive. This debut tends to shorter, poppier, more driving songs with a touch of psychedelia. The main complaint may be that this kind of music will sound "dated" to some. It's still highly enjoyable and much overlooked. Fans of early UK prog in the vein of Spring, Gracious, Fantasy or Beggars Opera should really love this. And if you like prog rock with lots of organ, this could be for you.
One of many?.......2000-06-04
Cressida was a shortlived group from the British Isles. Their first album, simply entitled "Cressida", can be described as a lightweight Moody Blues with folk nusic inspiration. Lightweight because they didn't use orchestration by far as much as the Moodys did. Although in my opinion not their best album, it's still a pleasent listen. I can recommend this for the listener that likes Hammond organ and folky vocals and a nice jazzy-like drumming and bass. Progressive easy-listening?

Album Details
Cressida was an Excellent British Progressive Rock Band and Authors of Two Memorable Albums that Are Still Much Sought-after. Their Second Album, Asylum, was Just as Successful as their First, Thanks to Its Captivating Atmospheres and the Technical Ability of the Musicians. Angus Cullen's Pleasing Vocal Style is at Times Surprisingly Folkie, While Peter Jennings Unveils Enviable Talent and Class, Especially in Certain Jazz Passages. Guitarist John Culley Does the Rest with Clean Guitar Solos that Never Sound Dated. The Whole Album is High-quality, but Tracks Like "Munich", "Lisa" and the Eleven Minute "Let them Come When They Will" Are Some of Its Highlights.

Customer Reviews:
Good, but not better than their debut........2006-12-30
Finding both of these CD's in the same day was a lucky find, but I prefer their self-titled debut better. The drum solo near the end of the CD gets a bit tedious.
Above-average early 70s British progressive rock.......2002-08-02
If you like hammond organ/piano/electric guitar-driven early 70s rock with some jazz leanings, then this is for you. The singer has a good sense of melody and an interesting, pleasant voice that doesn't annoy, unlike a few other bands working similar territory (Spring comes to mind). It's not complex music, but it's still enjoyable, especially the occasional shift into jazzier territory. Also, the quality of the recording is pretty good considering the era.
I'm just wondering why "Asylum" has been widely acclaimed to have mellotron on it, specifically the track "Munich," when in fact there is no mellotron on this CD...AT ALL. Several sources have made the mellotron claim, which I find odd to say the least. There ARE real strings in this song and on a couple of others, as well as a bit of real brass here and there. It's pretty obvious that they're not mellotron strings or brass. In fact, by reading the liner notes, you will see that there is an actual orchestra credited, whilst there are NO mellotron credits listed anywhere. End of story. I was disappointed because I was expecting to hear mellotron, which I love, though the orchestrations apparently mistaken for mellotron are done very tastefully, especially on "Munich."
Overall, this CD is good, but it's nothing spectacular. Though certainly a pleasant listen, there isn't anything on here that leaps out as being outstanding. Thus, I wouldn't call this essential unless you are really attracted to this type of sound.
Good Example of Early UK Proto-Prog.......2002-05-05
I haven't heard Cressida's first album yet, but I REALLY enjoy Asylum. Very good mix of vocals and laid back jazzier moments, along with the straight ahead bluesy jam mingled here and there for good measure. Mellotron fans will drool over the 9 minute 'Munich', which is my favorite cut on the whole CD. Definitely the highlight of the album, although I can safely say the rest is very enjoyable too.
The best of two.......2000-06-04
This was Cressida's second and last album, and the best one. The starting line "Lunatic Larry beating his head on the wall" fits well in with the title of the album, "Asylum". It's got a couple of longer tracks than the debut and sounds a bit more mature. Still a pleasent group to listen to, without too many "turn-arounds" in rhythm like too many bands loved to do at this time. For Uriah Heep fanatics: Iain Clark, the drummer is the same as on "Look At Yourself" He plays on both Cressida albums.
They Came From The Heavens And With Them They Brought Sound.......1999-10-06
