Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

    Ed Kuepper's post-Saints band, Laughing Clowns, have been poorly served in the CD era. Four separate CD releases existed prior to this complete, three CD collection - two of their "real" albums (one with 10 tracks, one with only 9, and neither with bonus tracks) and two compilations (both just 10 tracks, with lots of duplication with each other and the two stand alone albums).

    This collection sets things straight, with 48 tracks which include all of the above plus roughly a dozen and a half more tracks. If, like me, you've marvelled at the unique and stellar magic of chance hearings of (now former) obscurities such as "Year Of The Bloated Goat," or if you've wondered what all those early uncompiled tracks from the "Prince Melon-era" actually sounded like, this is the package for you. This 3xCD set is packaged in a kind of fold-out digipack, and includes excellent liner notes and band member details, as well as a track-by-track run through memory lane from Kuepper.

    The music of the Laughing Clowns always suffered from a certain muddy claustrophobia; the mastering here is better than on previous releases, but like the first Raincoats album or the Blue Orchids' "Greatest Hit," it's obvious that the band did not record in the most luxurious studios. But, as with those other albums, it all works, and while Laughing Clowns may be one of those "love 'em or hate 'em" bands, anyone with an open mind and adventurous taste in music will find plenty of fantastic songs and innumerable moments of jaw-dropping wonder.

    The only complaint I can make is that this set is not chronological. This doesn't affect the listening experience as such, but makes it difficult to chart the development of the band easily. I suspect there's a "period" in the band's career which I favor, but I haven't got the time to sort it out. At the same time, there are few weak moments here . . . this is an underrated boxed set from an unjustly obscure band.

      Alto saxophonist Elton Dean and bassist Hugh Hopper established their reputations with the groundbreaking jazz-rock band Soft Machine in the '70s and have continued to be strong forces in the British free-jazz scene. On this excel1ent 1995 release, they team up with pianist Keith Tippett and drummer Joe Gallivan to create a wide-ranging program of bristling, exploratory jazz and innovative electronic music. Gallivan plays synthesizer in addition to his propulsive, pulse-oriented drums, and on several cuts ("Jannakota" and "Rocky Recluse") the music drifts into beguiling electronic soundscapes. These serve as interludes for the more energetic and fiery pieces featuring Dean's singular sax and Tippett's dense, multilayered piano. Dean's distinctive alto and the seldom-played saxello both project a plaintive, vocalized sound, equally adaptable to the frenzy of "Seven Drones" or the calm of "Echoes." This ability to shift emotional gears, shared by the group as a whole, results in a collective music that is both spontaneous and cohesive. --Wally Shoup

      If you love the Soft Machine-era Canterbury (also Daevid Allen's Gong) or current RIO (Rock In Opposition) progressive, then this CD might appeal to you. To me, it sounds extremely dated and I find it very difficult to listen to even after several attempts. The saxophone is irritating and the music seems uinspired, off-the-cuff, improvisational floundering that at times is as musical as fingernails running across a chalkboard. The musicianship of the combined talent here should have come-up with something better than this...squawking, experimental noise.

      Although credited with a release date of 1995, this album came from much earlier, 1976. It was originally released when Soft Machine was running out of puff (or was heading that way) and after bassist Hopper's involvement with Isotope had wound down.

      The album moves from an interplay of synthesiser and jazz saxophone at the opening of "Seven drones" through a much less frenetic and cooler aural field than the guitar-based fusion of later Softs.

      Tippett's presence, as always since his first high-profile appearance on King Crimson's Lizard, lifts the production to a very high level, and provides a more conventional, albeit lateral thinking, keyboard basis for the group's sound. Ex-Soft Machine member Dean's saxophones are lush and lyrical. Much of the music lies close to early Weather Report in style and textures.

      The music hots up gradually and gets extremely powerful in places with sensational rhythmic drive. There are some excellent seemingly free-form interplays between electric piano and drums and sax and synth, provided by the drummer, Gallivan, rather than Tippett. Two or three tracks are really wild, some of my all-time favourite jazz fusion efforts.

      A great record for lovers of experimental jazz who aren't blind to the possibilities of synthesiser in jazz.

      Hugh Hopper/Elton Dean are two of my favorite Jazz/Rock/Fusion players. This record is from an experimental band from the 1980's - 1990's that Hugh & Elton had put together. The playing is excellent. Compositionally, it is somewhat loose. Seven Drones is a great piece, but it uses anything but dronish effects! The moods move very well in this piece. Some of the most satisfying pieces are Bjorn Free and Soul Fate, which are mellow is contrast to the other pieces. This music has a familiarity similar to Soft Machine from the early seventies. Strong percussive chart type melodies, with complex harmonic configurations. Square Enough Fire leaves this impression very strongly. Check out Mercy Dash To. Great spin!

      Here's another astonishing piece for all Handelians. Many of Handel's great pieces have sadly been neglected - just like many of Richard Strauss' operas which have only recently received attention from people like Botstein, Korsten and Sinopoli (deceased). Thankfully, Gardiner and his team took the trouble to record this astonishing masterpiece. I simply love this piece - Saul!! The Monteverdi choir is the best in the world - listen to their stunning virtuosity here. Thank you, Gardiner!!

      Saul is one of those lesser known works by Handel. I certainly prefer Solomon, the Messiah or Israel in Egypt. Nevertheless, there is plenty of glorious music in Saul. The Monteverdi sings with their customary virtuosity. Casting of solo parts is superb. A bit on the pricey side but this is an investment that will yield rich dividends over a long period of time. Instead of listening to the Messiah all the time, or Solomon or Jephtha, why not be more daring and explore this lesser known work by Handel?
