if this recording is not on your short list of things to hear/do, it should be.
the Byrd setting of "Oh Christ who art our light and day" is one of the loveliest things that I have ever heard.
I play it ever day at the same, appointed hour; so comforting, so beautifully well-sung.
the Compline setting on Disc 2 is pretty memorable, too.

This is superb a capella singing. Each note, each syllable, is just right. John Rutter has a genius for writing and, as is the case here, performing religious choral music. The sound is gorgeous. Highest recommendation.

The pain of a protracted legal battle with his former manager and the release of being allowed to record again after a three-year layoff are equally apparent from the piercing hard rock and harsh lyrical content of Darkness on the Edge of Town. Betrayal and hard work that comes to naught are the primary subjects on his mind here, evidenced by songs such as "Adam Raised a Cain," "Factory," and "Streets of Fire." Elsewhere, there are signs of hope or at least the possibility of outrunning your problems ("Racing in the Street," "The Promised Land," "Prove It All Night"). But mostly, these are songs about exorcising some serious demons, and from the sound of things, Springsteen's loud, lonesome howl and blistering guitar work went a long way toward making him whole again. This was the album that got me to stop buying Springsteen albums. The first three albums had been great. Born to Run, the album that preceeded this one, was an absolute masterpiece. So I had high hopes when I bought Darkness. They were all dashed.

What happened? You see these reviews here having orgasms about the angry, harsh attitude of the songs. Yay. Notice that nobody talks about the actual *quality* of the music. After there albums where Bruce evidenced great songwriting skill, coming up with wonderful chord progressions, fantastic song structures with unexpected twists, and really showing off his talented band to good effect, on darkness he regresses to simplistic, boring, utterly predictable 3-chord songs. For instance, Badlands: the same ultra-basic 3 chords over and over again, the verse the same as the chorus. Gee Bruce, what'd it take you, 5 whole minutes to think up that one? And THAT song is one of the better on the album! (at least the tune is catchy). There's a few songs which are ok, most are pretty forgettable.

And as for the arrangements and the use of the band, one statistic speaks volumes: Clarence Clemon's magnificent saxaphone plays for about 24 bars *on the whole album* (three short little 8 bar solos, and that's it!).

This is my favorite Springsteen album. I play it quite often, and the songs are equally angry, sad, poetic, and haunted. Badlands, the title track, and Adam Raised a Cain are brutal and brilliant. Adam especially is a really scorching track. Racing in the Street is one of Bruce's most despairing songs, but it's still quite moving. You can really feel the desperation of the characters in the song. Even the lesser tracks like Factory (a song I like a lot) have a world weariness and power to them that most artists today can't even come close too. The Promised Land is another great Bruce anthem, one of his greatest songs. The cover is really something. It looks like Bruce just woke up, and you have to give him credit for making himself look so average. Most rockers wouldn't do that, because they're so obsessed with their image. I think this is Bruce's best work.

springsteen's 1973-1978 years were an amazing run, almost as great as the rolling stones 1968-1972 years. each album that he released in this stretch of time was fantastic. "darkness on the edge of town" is his starkest production from that era. a masterpiece that is intense and dramatic, with a big drum and bass sound, and several of the finest songs in our rock and roll canon. "badlands," "the promised land," "prove it all night," and the title track are all powerful, heavenly rock performances. "adam raised a cain," "something in the night," and "streets of fire," may be less known, perhaps less lauded, but are each great in their own right. the lyrical guitar solo and sax solo on "promised land" are both gorgeous; and the raw, wild telecaster sound of the solo on "streets of fire" is soul-stirring. bruce's voice is uninhibated, soars with emotion and drama, and is tremendous throughout. johnny cash. bob dylan. bruce springsteen: my trio of homegrown american voices that are indispensable (if you want to make it a quartet and throw in billy joe shaver, i won't argue). your life will seem vaguely empty without lots of music from these gentlemen around the house.

Hard hitting, thought provoking, intense, emothional... just a few adjectives to describe this true gem.

Every song on this album is classic. Even the plainest arrangement on the album (Factory) lyrics have a serious bite to them. The title track is Rock and Roll poetry at it's absolute finest. Badlands ranks among Springsteen's five best songs, and that's no small accomplishment, yet Promised Land, Racing In the Street, and Prove It All Night are just as good. The rest of the album is on that same level. Adam Raised A Cain, Candy's Room, Streets of Fire, and the aforementioned Prove It All Night all have searing (as opposed to soaring) guitar work. Springsteen's guitar tracks burn a hole deep into your soul. It's not the flashy guitar god fret flying Van Halenesque style. It's a style that is filled with raw emotion. Lyrically, there are only three people in popular music who could be rated as high as Springsteen as a aongwriter. They are Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Tom Waits. Dylan's peaks have matched Springsteens, but only Waits has been as consistent.

Will Oldham, the artist formerly known as Palace, has never been concerned with creating pop music. Oldham's forte, murder ballads, antispirituals, dead-sea chanteys, and lost-love songs, has always been "difficult," forcing the listener to confront some rather unseemly topics. Say this about Oldham, however, despite his quirks (cracking vocals, shambolic instrumentation, baroque language), at its best, his music is bracing and, often, very beautiful. That said, I See a Darkness, his second LP since abandoning the Palace moniker, is the most accessible, gorgeous, and moving record of his career. Instead of the gothic, low-fi country feel of many of his projects, Darkness comes off sounding like an early-'70s Neil Young album, comprised of a stately piano backbone and fleshed out by loose-fitting guitar strums. I'm an avid music fan. I've listened to quite an array of rock and pop throughout my life and I can say without hesitation that this disc is unlike anything I've ever heard. All of BPB's work is incredibly interesting. He's taken folk and worked in blues, rock, country, all with undertones of both melancholy and joy. In my opinion, this is his definitive work, the one you MUST have if you want to get the complete Bonnie Price Billy experience. I must admit that I cannot listen to this stuff very often because it is such a strange, intense experience. Every once in a while, an artist creates something beyond his medium. Will Oldham has done that here. This is more than music.

For an avid Will Oldham fan like me this album started as a surprise. It actually sounds good! The sound is now more polished, the music not recorded at once and the voice not as shaky as it used to be. You could say it's a more commercial touch but he certainly deserves more credit for his songwriting skills.

The first song 'A Minor Place' relies completly on melody, it's hard to think that the first 2,5 minutes are really the same but the melody is great and should therefor be part of the Oldham top 10.
Second song 'Nomadic Revery' has a haunting chorus in the Appalachian style that could have been sung by David Eugene Edwards of 16 Horsepower.
Track 3 might actually be his most famous song but not in this version but song by Johnny Cash on his American Recordings III. Like so many songs (U2's 'One' for example) that version is actually slightly better.

The quality remains very high throughout the album. The lyrics still are not the most cheerful (Death to Everyone, which does have a lalala part).

I am not sure if I think this is Oldham's best album, I still listen to his Palace-work more, but it certainly is great album and he shows that he is one of the greatest indie songwriters, up there with people like Lou Barlow.

On first listen I was disappointed with this album. I expected melancholia but not like this. After a few more spins I figured out what I had missed. This is the most beautiful album. Absolutely the best, it can be sad, it can be hopeful, it can be everything. Will Oldham sounds real, and his reality is haunting and beautiful at the same time. The music is minimalist and sparse which only contributes to the beauty and dynamic of the record. It is one of the best albums of the 1990s and I recommend it to any true music fan.

Sorry, that was insipid.

Anyway, few albums this good and this affecting from the late 90's come to mind. Among them would be In the Aeroplane Over the Sea and The Soft Bulletin. Rarely is music such great background and foreground music at the same time. After hearing it a few times at a friend's house some time in 1999, I scoured at least 20 record stores in at least five cities to find a copy of this. I eventually just got it via Amazon.

If anything, I love how deceitful Will Oldham is. What would you expect an album with a title and a cover like those and songs named "Minor Place" "Black" and "Death to Everyone?" Actually, the lyrics are very hopeful and it's nice to hear about the subject matter from a mature adult rather than some shallow, nasal teenager who thinks he has something relevant to say. After the first listen, this album has sincerely killed you softly with its piano, bass, tap-drumming, lazily strummed guitar and Oldham's erie, human voice. It really leaves you feeling dead in a way that so many musicians, by contrast, try to do with distorted guitars, double bass drums and screaming.

Goddamn this is good rainy day music. As my taste in music matures, Loveless slips further and further down my favorites of the 90's list with this edging its way into the top 5. This is a must own for people who like humanly affecting music but hate emo.

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy (aka Will Oldham) creates the scariest take on country music imaginable. In fact, this could easily be labelled 'goth country'.

His lyrics are intensley personal and his voice a deep and dark wonder. His songs are carefully crafted and arranged in an obscure warmth and frailty.

On some occasions the songs creep along steadily, on others errupt into soaring climaxes of double tracked vocals on the brink of collapse. These climaxes don't play on the usual tricks of severe dynamic change or string sections, but rather involve escalations in emotive force that ripple through you.

Will Oldham is a master songwriter, and an expert at creating sound collages and textures not usually associated with country music.

Not entirely a career retrospective and decidedly not a vault raid that reveals the junk in the trunk, this four-disc collection chronicles Ozzy's hot-burnt and all-too-brief Blizzard Of Ozz and Diary Of A Madman post-Black Sabbath era with Randy Rhoads and also the long road the Ozzman traveled in search of a guitarist that could ever come close to matching his late friend's creative spark. Listening to material from albums such as Bark At The Moon and The Ultimate Sin reveals that even when Osbourne wasn't flying all that high musically he did keep evolving and, in the often risk averse world of heavy metal, he often took chances that could have potentially alienated core fans ("Thank God For The Bomb" reveals that Ozzy may care about the planet but he doesn't possess the same knack for politics as Bob Dylan) but made them embrace him even more. He managed to hit another career high with guitarist Zakk Wylde and the No More Tears album which provides some of the second disc's finest moments. ("Mama I'm Coming Home" proves one of the underrated balladeer's most poignant moments.) But the back end of this collection shines as much as its front with a disc that compiles various collaborative efforts, including a tussle with Miss Piggy on "Born To Be Wild" and a strange detour with Was (Not Was) on "Shake Your Head (Let's Go To Bed)." The real gem is the fourth platter which finds Ozzy covering some of his favorite tunes from the past, including a moving and wholly accurate reading of John Lennon's "Working Class Hero," a song that almost seems to have been written with Osbourne in mind. Ozzy may be the prince of darkness but he's also the king of heavy metal and this set demonstrates, once more, exactly why. -- Jedd Beaudoin

With Lorraine Hunt you can't go wrong. Her appeal is universal: those who don't fancy opera will love it because of her virtuoso capability, originality and sincerity. Laurent Naouri expressed the core of her appeal: "When she sang her character, people would forget all that is conventional in opera. People would forget even her singing; they would just feel something so deep and true." Bravo, Lorraine, you set a standard for all time.

She really left a wonderful gift in this cd. I wish I could have appreciated her voice before she died so as to have seen her in concert. What a voice she had!

If you love the voice of Janet Baker or Kathleen Ferrier, you will love this collection. Miss Hunt is the peer of any mezzo soprano I have ever heard, bar none. Her voice is pure and rich, her musicality is flawless, her total effect awe inspiring. If you have never heard Lorraine before, this is a great place to start. You won't be sorry!

I've been meaning to review this album for the longest time, but haven't because of my committments at work and other things. Lieberson's voice, in my opinion, is one of the most beautiful instruments of our generation. It is, unlike a certain Renaaay who tries to sing anything and everything as a huge, incoherent slur, a very beautifully and artistically sung Handel recital. The tone is simply magnificent! And no other Handelian artist has connected her singing of the role with a dramatic sense that is so acute as her performances of the role.

It is really sad to know that this great artist died of breast cancer two days ago in her home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It was a big loss for the operatic world to lose such a beautiful instrument at such a young age. Lorraine Hunt-Lieberson will be missed.

I have had this CD for several years now, and also all of the CDs from which these arias are drawn. What a great album; I would not be without it. Ms. Hunt (now Hunt Lieberson) has the voice, phrasing, discipline...the inner understanding of this music. She's "connected" on almost every piece here. 'Angels Bright and Fair' is a particular standout in my view; but almost certainly, if you are a lover of Handel's music, you will find something special here. Her soprano to mezzo soprano on this CD was a subtle and extraordinary voice for performing these pieces.

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Agent Orange (they came from Orange County) weren't punk, weren't metal, and weren't surf revival. Yet they had bleak near-metal outlook and riffage a bit above punk's two chord grind, speed like punk and attitude & angst like punks, and they dug classic surf instrumentals. This is Underground at its best. Agent Orange, for all the bleakness of their lyrics, were much lighter than other bands of the Hardcore Punk scene (that's the genre they were lumped in with, but like I said, they weren't punk). They had a typical dude persona that was covered by the anger of their singer/guitarist Mike Palm's songs.

Living In Darkness was originally an EP (tracks 2-9 on the curent CD). In '92, it was released with new tracks (some of them from the 1979 sessions that earned them their contract). "Bloodstains," with Mike's anger, its simple chaotic riff and the dread-surf solo made it a fine opener. "Everything Turns Grey" is classic punk style stuff with a quick, simple yet effective rapidfire solo by Mike. "No Such Thing" has an awesome metal riff (people need to hear this, its a heavy like Metallica riff), and "America" is classic "Americanan is gay" sentiment. Living In Darkness has three surf instrumentals from the sixties also. All are done with righteous agression and driving force. The songs are "Miserlou" by Dick Dale, "Pipeline" by The Chantays, and "Mr. Moto" by The Bel-Airs. A radio interview is also included. The boys sound like Average Joes on weed. Classic.

Agent Orange was a big influence on The Offspring, and you can tell. These fun but fierce Underground kings were pretty darn good, and need to be known more. Living In Darkness is fine food for your player. If you're 16 and you wanna bang your head....bang your head to this.

when an album that is far better than anything from the 80's barely gets any recognition? Agent Orange is one of the best bands that never got the credit they deserved. Buy this album if you even kinda like surf-punk, such as that "Wipeout" song from the Surfaris (note that every song on this album is by far better than "Wipeout")

Oh, if you want a song-by-song for this album, simply give every song a 10. It's that good :)

I was fortunate to talk to Mike Palm at an Agent Orange show in Oklahoma City, and we got to discussing guitars. I won't divulge the secrets of his awesome surf-rock guitar sound, but I will say that he was very nice, introduced me and my friends to the rest of the band (the drummer let me sign the cast on his foot with which he proceeded to bang the holy sh*t out of his drums all night), and proceeded to put on a genuine punk rock show worthy of their legend. Viva Agent Orange!

P.S. This album is really grood. I mean, good. And great. Great and good.

I really didn't expect this album to sound this powerful !!! While it's true the music is surf-tinged,the overall sound is a storming punk/hc one with massive riffs and a skull splitting guitarwork,making this cd a nice addition to anyone fond of more ferocious punk rock.No resemblances to the Beach Boys as I was told,dude !!!!! The remastered sound is gorgeous except for the drums that are a lilttle muddled up,but hey,this is originally a low budget punk recording,so what the f@kk !!!!!.As bonus tracks 3 non album tracks from 91 have been added,along with some studio live songs,all very nice and coherent with the album.

Although their sounds are distinct, this album reminded me of Dissection's "Storm of the Light's Bane" on one level. They're both catchy, accessible, and atmospheric, but not commercial. I don't necessarily look for accessibility in black metal. After all, Emperor's rather difficult "In the Nightside Eclipse" is my favorite black metal album. However, it is nice for a change when you can love a black metal album on first listen without putting too much effort into it. This is definitely one of those albums. This may be true for Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, and their clones, but those bands are only accessible because their music doesn't have as much depth or lasting value as the true black metal elite. [Note: This isn't to say that they are bad. Cradle isn't my taste, but I can stand Dimmu.]

Like much of black metal, it is missing the point to describe it on purely musical terms. Like most other black metal classics, it is the atmosphere which makes this album enjoyable. It's not particulary sadistic or sad. It's simply dark and grim. Necro, if you will. If any album conjures up images of the frozen north, it would be this one. It's the perfect album for dark, wintry days.

If I were to rank my favorite black metal albums, this probably wouldn't make the top 5, but I'd put it in the bottom half of the top 10. If you're new to Immortal, start here. There isn't a weak track to be found.

Black metal in general is a love it or hate it affair, but Immortal represents the cream-of-the-crop, as far as I'm concerned. They also defy the stereotypical Satanic/anti-christian subject manner usually associated with the genre, with most of their songs set in a frozen mythical land called Blashyrkh:

"Blashyrkh mighty be your name victorious a kingdom we made
with strength and pride all the way you are at the heart of winter

The statue watches the kingdom your giant wings make all beneath
I'm staring forth the raventhrone I know I'm at the heart of winter"
(from the album 'At the Heart of Winter')

Yes, there are chainsaw guitars and blazing double-bass drumming, but there's also many atmospheric passages, all the while staying HEAVY as hell. Abbath's croaking vocals might not sit well with some, but it works - it really does.

"Sons of Northern Darkness" is a MUST-HAVE black metal release. Immortal are reuniting for some concert dates in 2007 - don't miss them!!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good album by Immortal........2007-03-02

This album is another pretty good release by Immortal. Not as great as some of their other CD's, but definitely not bad by any means. The band took a bit more of a mainstream turn on this album, but not so much that the listener cannot decipher as to whether or not the roots to their earlier releases are still present. Immortal did another good job with this album...as usual. The guitar work is outstanding, the vocals are pretty good as they usually are...and overall, the whole CD is definitely owrth checking out. Recommended!

Excellent excellent excellent, that is all that can truly describe this album or this band in general. Some say that it all sounds the same, well perhaps if they would just turn down their greenday and listen to the real stuff they would gte a better picture of what these "heathens" are really trying to say.

Point is, if you enjoy crazy riffs, crazy double-bass pedels, and vocals that could force mud to give birth to a pig, then this is for you.

3 out of 5 stars What's so great about it? Overrated and disappointing.......2006-12-19

Seeing this album listed in so many people's lists of "best Black Metal albums" and seeing all the 5-star ratings, you'd think this must surely be one of the unholiest pieces of Hellish fury ever recorded. But you'd be wrong.

Man was I disappointed when I put it on and instead heard a bunch of mainstream-style licks with a bit of croaky Black Metal vocals. I call this stuff "Black Metal Lite". No true Black Metal chaos, all the songs all nice and safe and neat and tidy and cleanly produced. Yeah maybe they're not quite as commercial as Cradle of Filth or Dimmu Borgir, but with this album they came pretty damned close. Overall it's pretty lightweight and hardly what I'd call Black Metal. If you want to listen to some REAL Black Metal, go get yourself something by Behexen or Antaeus or Urgehal or Pest or Tsjuder.

But props to Immortal for at least having the sense to realize they had lost their edge and it was time to call it quits. This stuff here is just tired mainstream Metal masquerading under corpsepaint as "Black Metal" to fill a certain product bin in suburban shopping malls.

4 out of 5 stars 70' style hard rock with a light touch.......2007-04-25

There are some conditions for anyone to try and like this CD. First, you have to get used to Justin Hawkins singing which can go from a normal decent rock voice one second to sounding like he's just lopped off his babymaker with a knife the next second. On first listen I didn't think I would get used to it, but I did and now it doesn't bother me. Second, you have to like 70's hard rock bands like Aerosmith, AC/DC, Foghat, KISS, Cheap Trick, etc., because that's the style of music The Darkness play. I grew up on these bands so was thrilled to hear some good melodic guitar riffs and solos. Third, lighten up. These are not songs with messages. They are 3 or 4 minutes of loud guitar, overblown rock n' roll vocals and cheesy lyrics probably written while drunk. The Darkness are not a great band but they wrote some fun songs to listen to that will get your head bobbing and feet tapping.

If you liked the smash hit "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" then in all likelihood, you'll enjoy this album. The Darkness' debut is filled with catchy melodies, supported by loud rock guitars and enough high-pitched wailing to make David Lee Roth proud. "Love On The Rocks" and "Black Shuck" feature the band at their rock zenith, while "Friday Night" and "Holding My Own" show that ballads can in fact still rock. A must-own for anyone who kneels at the altar of '70's Classic Rock, or else anyone who can appreciate loud, sleazy guitars alongside lead singers with the same attributes.

For those of you not familiar with The Darkness the band burst on to the scene in England in 2003 becoming a stadium level act almost overnight. Their sound takes a heaping dose of 70's glam rock with a pile of 80's hair metal and adds a bit of Queen influence to come up with their over the top version of classic rock for the new millennium. The album did not make nearly as much of a splash in the US although the single "I Believe In A Thing Called Love" did get some limited airplay. So, after reading all the hype about these guys in Europe I had to pick up the album to see what all the fuss was about. So does it live up to the hype? Well......yes and no. I would not say that this is a great album, but I have to give it props in that the songs are catchy as hell, the riffs are solid and well...the album just rocks. The Darkness are not really doing anything new. Their sound is derived from many bands that came before them that many darkness fans may be too young to remember. It is basic classic rock all the way with Justin Hawkins unique vocals on top of it all. Still it is a formula that works for the most part and I find this album very enjoyable.

Firstly, this band is nothing like Queen. They were sent to give us some old time, good, original Rock and Roll.

This album is amazing. The scorching guitar solos, pounding rhythm section and shrill, powerful singing shows intelligence and originality. Don't listen to people who have nothing else to whine about. This beats all of today's boring, dull music with no talent musicians and boring, cheesy lyrics. Buy this and let it add a bit of colour to your life.
The Darkness, Oasis, and, last but by no means least, the Scissor Sisters are out to save the music industry. Don't knock 'em till you've tried 'em.

Oh, and BUY!

Yeah OK the hype worked on me. Just had to check out the story. And to tell the truth the story ain't half bad. Musically these guys are solid enough, the opener Black Shuck gridning out a riff that's as good as anything else going around and the song itself is charmingly incomprehensible until you find out the story behind it. Other tracks such as Get Your Hands Off My Woman clip along nicely, not overstaying their welcome. Sometimes it doesn't work out as well such as tracks like Holding My Own and Friday Night which are fairly forgettable.

The band seem quite tight and not afraid to show their influences such as Queen and other 70's eccentricities. But they also bring a fresh version of their idols to the table such as the slightly funky Stuck in a Rut and the deliberately ridiculous Love On the Rocks With no Ice. This quite deliberate humour also sets these boys apart from their peers - for some time prior to it's release the whole hard rock/heavy metal scene had so little of it. Of couse Euro metal bands were happy to play around, but UK bands and especially US bands seemed incapable of imparting any sense of fun unless it was grudginly offered under layers of irony.

So musically pretty good stuff, light hearted in attitude and with a decent production job and individualistic cover - no wonder this thing sold.

But - and there is a but. Many fans will be turned off by the vox of Justin Hawkins. Now I like the effect he's able to do with his voice, like a bloke with his wedding tackle in a vice, but why do it every song? Sure it's their signature sound but when you have a special weapon you bring it out for special occasions. Not beat yo audience over the head with it every time. So to listen to this album from one end to the other may not be the easiest thing to do.

If you like your hard rock with a nod to the past and with a big grin on it's face then snap this up. Almost three years after it's release it's videos are still in decent rotation and that says something for the bands skill at capturing a decent melody within a hard rock framework.

Kerouac enthusiasts are well-served with recordings of their master's work read by others. I can think of several such albums already available, mainly of his well known books: On The Road, The Dharma Bums, Visions of Cody, Big Sur, and Mexico City Blues. There are also Jack's own recordings, released on a 3-CD Rhino Records set, in which he tends to explore more unfamiliar territory, such as his Pomes All Sizes, Old Angel Midnight, and Book of Blues, with just the occasional excursion into the more familiar realms of The Subterraneans, Desolation Angels, Lonesome Traveler, and Visions of Cody.

Such is the case with this tribute CD from Rykodisc where the producer (and nephew of Jack's last wife) Jim Sampas, has deliberately chosen more unfamiliar texts for the galaxy of star talents on this release to read. The reasoning behind this decision was apparently to show Kerouac in a different light, and to demonstrate the wide range of his different styles. In this objective Sampas has succeeded admirably.

Accordingly, there are readings of the more obscure items from Pomes All Sizes and Book of Blues as well as four texts which have never before been published: Brooklyn Bridge Blues, America's New Trinity of Love: Dean, Brando, Presley, and two dreams: "On a Sunny Afternoon...", and "Us Kids Swim Off a Great Pier". The excellent 32-page booklet includes the full text of all the readings, and so represents the first publication of these items. It also has some photos of Jack, and paintings by him which have not been widely seen.

So, who is reading the texts? A host of talent from the worlds of music, film and literature. The late Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs are present, as are Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Hunter S Thompson and Jim Carroll. The musician readers include R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe, Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, Aerosmith's Steven Tyler, Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth, Patti Smith, John Cale, Warren Zevon, the Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter, Eric Anderson and Julia Hatfield. Other musicians, such as Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore, ex-10,000 Maniacs guitarist Rob Buck, and Jeff Buckley provide backings for the readers. From the land of film and stage come Johnny Depp and Matt Dillon, as well as comedian Richard Lewis. There's even a previously unheard recording of Kerouac himself, reading from his MacDougal Street Blues, with over-dubbed bass, synth and guitar by Joe Strummer. Jack can also be heard in the background of Robert Hunter's reading from Visions of Cody, skatting "A Foggy Day in London Town" from a rare tape recorded at the Cassady's home in 1952.

What of the readings? Well, they cover a wide range of interpretations, from the stark Lydia Lunch on Bowery Blues and the wild Maggie Estep on Skid Row Wine to the child-like rendition by Julia Hatfield of Silly Goofball Pomes, and the improvisation of Patti Smith on The Last Hotel, the poem of Jack's which always reminds me of Arthur Rimbaud. The readers I most enjoyed were those who sounded like Jack and who phrased like Jack, since I truly believe that no one can read Kerouac as well as Kerouac did. Accordingly, my favorite reader has to be Lee Ranaldo, who delivers a magnificent reading of a letter to John Clellon Holmes in which Jack is telling of his encounter with the beautiful "Good Blonde" who gave him a lift up the west coast in 1955. I could listen to that voice reading Kerouac all day long. All night too. Runners up in this category would have to be Robert Hunter (Visions of Cody), Warren Zevon (Running Through - Chinese Poem Song), and Matt Dillon (Mexican Loneliness).

Allen Ginsberg does a fine reading of the previously unseen Brooklyn Bridge Blues, recorded at the Town Hall, NYC, in 1995. Only 8½ of the total of 10 choruses were read by Allen because, on the day, the last page had somehow become lost. To rectify this shortcoming, Eric Anderson can be heard performing the missing 1½ choruses on a separate track, from the top of the Brooklyn Bridge, no less, with the sounds of the traffic passing by.

As well as the Kerouac readings, two of the tracks feature new material. The band Morphine perform "Kerouac", their own tribute to the man, and Hunter S Thompson, after reading a short extract from one of Jack's letters to William Burroughs, adds his own "Ode to Jack" in homage to his hero.

The musical accompaniments cover a wide spectrum of styles. No jazz, which Jack preferred, and which backed some of his own recordings, but rock sounds of varying intensities and complexities. I still reckon that Jack would have approved.

The CD as a whole presents a vast variety of content, reading styles and musical accompaniments, all fitted together in a pleasing sequence that would be hard to beat. The playing time is extremely generous at 79½ minutes, and the complete package is indeed a fine tribute to Jack Kerouac. Producer Jim Sampas is to be congratulated in putting it all together. Let's hope that this is but the first of many such projects.

Now and then a CD gets better the more you listen. Such is the case with Kicks Joy Darkness, a tribute to Jack Kerouac. It was released in 1997, but I recently rediscovered it and put it in my car so I could listen again. I'm glad I did.

The CD is a tribute in words, music and voices to one of the greatest writers of our time. Here, his work is interpreted by a diverse range of talents, including actor Matt Dillon, Morphine, Michael Stipe, the awesome band Come, and Aerosmith's Steven Tyler, as well as Jack's contemporaries Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Allen Ginsberg.

The best two tracks are "Dream: "Us Kids Swim off a Gray Pier" by Tyler, who does a phenomenal job of evoking Jack's images of summer through spoken word, and "MacDougal Street Blues," which is Jack's own voice backed by the late great Joe Strummer on electronic beat and keyboards. It's nothing short of sublime.

I like Jack's work because he seems to be a reluctant hero, which is what he was. Once his "On the Road" was reviewed by the New York Times in 1957, he was touted as The Next Big Thing and the spokesperson of a generation (the Beat generation for sure). And sort of like Kurt Cobain in the Nineties, who was also given the role of spokesperson of a generation against his will, Jack resisted. He never wanted to be anything but a writer, so fame ate him up and overshadowed the very thing that had catapulted him to the forefront in the first place - his talent.

My only complaint about this CD is that none of Jack's novels (his best work) are represented here, which is why I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5. I recommend picking up this CD as it's definitely worth a listen.

A well chosen and diverse mix of musicians, poets and writers contribute intimate interpretations of Kerouac's poetry. Haunting, graceful, raw and humorous, a brilliant album highly recommended. Special hilights-Hunter S Thompson's gonzo "Ode to Jack," Morphine's smoky "Kerouac," and Maggie Estep & the Spitters aggressive "Skid Row Wine." Jack himself is heard to a house beat by Joe Strummer on "Macdougal St Blues." One of a kind.

For those of you who know Kerouac, you know that my screen name comes from "The Brooklyn Bridge Blues" - a track on this wonderful CD. For those of you who aren't that familiar with his work, I would highly recommend this collection.

Lydia Lunch's version of "Bowery Blues" is reason enough to get it - sultry, dangerous and mad with introspective passion. John Cale does a really nice rendition of "The Moon", one of Jack's more beautiful poems.

There are other gems here, as well. Juliana Hatfield's take on "Silly Goofball Pomes" has that perfect, childlike sound. "Mexican Loneliness" and Jack's "Dream" highlight his descriptive brilliance.

This CD would serve as a great introduction to Kerouac's work. The balance between spoken word and musical performance is near perfect and serves to show the timelessness of effective poetry.
