The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

They were right--there is NO business like the show business they did way back when !!!.......2006-11-18
Everything that happens in life
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....
The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!
The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!
The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother
The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt
The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!
This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."
I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.
There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.
The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.
In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.
One of the best cds I ever bought. .......2006-06-07
What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!
Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16
Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.
This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

History's already shown that the self-proclaimed master of "bad taste" has always had impeccably good taste, even at his most extreme. A large part of the reason that his aesthetic has had a real and unabated influence since the early 1970s is that there's nothing forced or ironic about his approach to film-making, including the soundtracks to his movies, which the director terms "little-known, weird vintage music." Waters says that the selections on A Date are "all romantic seduction music I would play if I had you over." Naturally, it's an off-kilter patchwork selection; most folks would not try to seduce someone with either an Ike & Tina Turner number or "Sometimes I Wish I Had a Gun," sung by Waters habitué Mink Stole. The collection is fun and veers from mellow crooners and hopped-up rhythm and blues to forgotten rocker hits from the '50s ("Tonight You Belong to Me" by Patience and Prudence) and '70s ("Jet Boy Jet Girl" by Elton Motello). If the collection sells well, the director promises to bring you Breaking Up with John Waters, as if you needed another reason to buy this one. --Mike McGonigal
Customer Reviews:
John Waters - Yes!.......2007-05-16
The other reviewers have said it all, and I'll add my praise - exceeded my high expectations. I don't know where he found some of the tracks. I remember hearing 'Jet Boy Jet Girl (he gives me head)' on the radio in the 80s, and hadn't been able to find it since - until now!
Not for children or prudes. All you cool people - enjoy! John: do some more compilations! How about a DVD of weird movie scenes?
Fabulous!.......2007-05-12
This isn't the first time John Waters has compiled a list of his favorite tracks to a theme (See, John Waters Christmas...). The man has a knack for resurfacing some of the oddest and classic tunes of all time. This album is themed around a Macabre-Valentines Day-ish Date with John....I won't go into specific tracks because you can see them here... but some of the songs on this album are virtually impossible to find anywhere else. This is a must-have disc for the fan of Waters or otherwise!
A date with John.......2007-05-12
Great music to accompany a great guy, John Waters! He's a sweetheart!
a date to remember.......2007-05-07
You're hopelessly seduced from the opening track "Tonight You Belong To Me" (Patience and Prudence) - "the first record I ever shoplifted". From there on it's just a metter of when John will pop the question. But he's not easy - and he makes sure the mood is set just right.
All these tracks are in pristine condition and the compilation is arranged and produced to perfection. Anyone who has tried their hand at mix tapes will swoon at John's informed skill and remarkable taste.
I bought the CD just for "Jet Boy Jet Girl", "Big Girls Don't Cry" and "Johnny Are You Queer?" - but every other song here is a true gem. I am exuberantly happy with this purchase.
The music is enhanced by the liner notes in which John guides us through his planned evening of romantic bliss - and respects us enough to leave us with a beautiful song for the morning after ("Bewildered").
For all of us who will never be fortunate enough to date John Waters in person, this is the next best thing.
Sensational Stuff.......2007-03-23
John Waters should be releasing compilations more often - A Date With John Waters is simply fantastic. A great collection of oldies, mastered from different sources but all sounding incredibly vibrant. Now I know why my mum would often sing "If I knew you were coming I'd've baked a cake"! Hilarious, hokey, somehow imbued with an incredible tenderness. Waters' film soundtracks are often great, also; one of his most recent, "A Dirty Shame", is very fine.

Ask anyone who's attended one and they'll tell you: there's nothing quite as colorful--and emotionally melodramatic--as a Greek wedding. Based on Winnipeg actress-comedian Nia Vardalos's one-woman show and brought to the screen by Rita Wilson and husband Tom Hanks, the film tells (with some parallels to Moonstruck) the story of a thirtysomething Greek spinster for whom falling in love with a "Xeno" (non-Greek) is surely the easiest part of a wedding that more than lives up to its billing. The film's soundtrack perfectly captures those swirling clouds of ethnic and romantic tension. Its first half largely sets up the rich cultural atmosphere with a lively sampling of traditional Greek folk music (featuring selections by Alexandros Xenofontos, John Tsifliklis, Eman, Nick Kutsukos, Daghan Baydur, and Richard Thomas), while the score proper from Alexander Janko (with help from Chris Wilson) slyly segues from similar fare ("Moose Caca," "Yasoo," "Yiayia") to more traditional orchestral film music. That sometimes electro-pastoral, compelling music has parallels with Rachel Portman's and offers the collection a sense of emotional completion. --Jerry McCulley

Great disappointment on amazon's shipping method.......2007-07-07
I had ordered this particular CD. However, After the second tried. i am yet to receive the CD. And i was really hoping the second CD could appear in my doorstep on the expected arrival date or 1 week later.
To be honest, This is the first time i didn't manage to receive my good from E-commerce Portal. I totally didnt expect this happen from reputable Amazon.
Nonetheless. I must admit your friendly customer service, they are always willing to assist me to reprocess or the refund the marchant.
Please kindly review your shipping method. or perhaps let me know what had happened to my shipping address or my goods. so i could still have confident to make purchase on your website again.
The Greek Music-.......2006-02-10
The cd is so phenomenal. The music is so traditional and it show so much of the greek culture. The bouzoki that they use which is a greek instrument was such a musical sound. In my school we are doing a GREEK PRESENTAION and we are going to use this music. We will dance to it and are going to be a success. So overall this is a superlative cd after all!!!!!!!!!!

I loved the strong rhythms and colorful harmonies of the traditional Greek numbers. The film score is lyrical but bland. This truly is a combination of "apples and oranges!"

This is a great instrumental CD! Not only great greek music that you can get up and dance to, but also the soft contemporary songs that you can just relax with. I enjoy it very much!

Nice Selection of Songs for the movie!.......2005-08-17
After watching the movie, I had to purchase the soundtrack because all the songs sounded really good in it.
This CD starts off with BT's `Superfabulous', an electronic fast paced song, and continues with a mixture of slow (like Somebody, Something About You, Waiting, Back To You) and fast paced songs (like More Bounce in California, Days Go By, I Wont Go To Hollywood)which you really want to listen to over and over again. Some of my favorite tracks are: Liz Phair's `Why Can't I', Five For Fighting's `Something About You', Alice Peacock's `Leading With My Heart', Bonnie McKee's `Somebody' and Frankie Jordan's `Once Again'.
Given below is the complete list of songs played throughout the movie, some of which are not included in the soundtrack, to help those who are trying to identify a particular song.
1. BT - Superfabulous: Song played during the opening credits.
2. Lina - Once Again: Song played in the background of the movie that Rosalee, Pete and Cathy are watching in the theatre.
3. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (BRMC) - Whatever happened to my Rock N' Roll: This is the song which Tad and some random girl are listening to when he is drinking and driving.
4. Grandadbob - MMMnn: Song played in the background when Tad and his managers are coming up with the idea near the swimming pool.
5. Wilshire - Special: Song played when they show the view of Fraziers Bottom, West Virginia.
6. Barry White - Can't get enough of your love, Babe: Song played when Tad and Pete are cooking their dinners.
7. Wheat - Some Days: Song played when Pete and Rosalee are in the bar playing darts.
8. Taylor Dayne - Get Up: Song played when all the reporters are in front of Rosalee's home, and she realizes that she won.
9. Soul Kid #1 - More Bounce in California: Song played when Rosalee lands and is in the airport.
10. Kyle Riabko - Waiting: Song played when Pete wants to talk to Rosalee alone before Tad walks in.
11. Alice Peacock - Leading with My Heart: Song played in the background while Tad is having lunch with Rosalee at the Fraziers Bottom Diner.
12. Liz Phair - Why Can't I: Song played when Rosalee enters the Piggly Wiggly supermarket after meeting Tad.
13. John Mayer - Back to You: Song played when Tad is driving to Rosalee's place.
14. Jason Wade - Days Go By: Song played when Rosalee and Tad are making out in his car.
15. Jessy Moss - Telling You Now: Song played when Pete sees Rosalee and Tad kissing in the bar.
16. Colin Blades - All I Ever Ask: Song played when Tad and Rosalee are kissing before his managers arrive.
17. Anti-Matter - Going Back to Cali: Song played when Rosalee says yes to move with Tad.
18. The Thorns - Blue: Song played when Pete confides in Angelica in the bar.
19. Jem - California Sun: Song played when Rosalee is packing her bags and Pete enters her room.
20. Bonnie McKee - Somebody: Song played when Rosalee is in the plane looking out.
21. Kristian Leontiou - Shining: Song played after Rosalee talks to Angelica to find out where Pete is.
22. Jason Wade - Song for Pete: Song played when Pete is changing the fm station in his car.
23. Frankie Jordan - Once Again: Song played during the last scene of the movie
24. Five For Fighting - Something About You: Song played during the end credits.
25. Bleu - I Wont Go To Hollywood: Song played during the end credits.
In conclusion, this soundtrack has a variety of songs which are fun listening to.

I have to be honest, I haven't bought or listened to the cd although I did enjoy the music throughout the movie. It's curious that Samuel Ramey has made such a specialty of diabolical roles, because his voice--although pure bass--has never had the jet-black timbre of a John Tomlinson or the threatening muscular attack of a Bryn Terfel. Indeed, it seems most comfortable in lighter repertory: Rossini, Mozart, anything that calls for grace and flexibility. But he has learned to slip a note of menace into the most elegantly well-turned phrase. His devils are urbane, sophisticated: evil in a suit and tie. And for the past six years, he's turned a rather chic collection of them into a recital program that has toured the world. This CD was recorded en route in Munich (it preserves an isolated fragment of audience applause, presumably to let you know). And here they all are: the Berlioz, Gounod, and Boito takes on Faust, together with Meyerbeer's Robert le Diable, Stravinsky's Rake, and (stretching the definition of operatic devilry) Offenbach's Dapertutto (Les Contes d'Hoffmann). This recording was made when Ramey was approaching 59 and starting to show his age. The voice is graying at the edges and is sometimes noticeably thin of texture, with a vibrato that rocks the poise of his slower, more lyrical numbers. But there's still plenty of life in the singing and an energy that never loses focus or coarsens into bluster. For that alone, he's still worth hearing. --Michael White
Customer Reviews:
Let's forget about Ramey for a minute..........2006-05-02
Most of the previous reviewers are either lamenting Sam Ramey's decline or hailing him as a legend. Let's dwell on the inovative program NAXOS has given us. Many new to this music can use this disc as an introduction to the complete works. Some will only care to have it and go no further. The live concert takes done in a three day span are competently played and warmly recorded. Did anyone mention that Liszt's "Mephisto Waltz"(orchestral version)is included? Most other recordings include alot of duplicate repetoire. Though made at the twilight of his career(Rec. Oct. 2000, age 59), Mr. Ramey dose his devilish best to bring the whole thing off. After all these years he has made these roles special in a cool collective style. The informative program notes will guide you through. Add a star if your a die hard Ramey fan or if your inspired to run out and buy the complete sets.
A Handsome Devil Of A Baritone.......2005-11-09
This recording finds the world famous bass Samuel Ramey at age 59, singing a collection of the "bass villain" repertory he gained fame for interpreting. His voice has darkened considerably and shows signs of aging, but still delivers. On this disc: Berlioz's operatic oratorio "La Damnation de Faust" is another account of the Goethe tale of Faust. Charles Gounod's opera is the more famous account. Samuel Ramey's pure bass voice was tailor-made for the role of the Devil. "Un Puce Gentile" is a more lyrical aria while "Devant La Maison" in which the Devil calls his spirits to bewitch Marguerite, is a coloratura, lively aria. Samuel Ramey once again sigs a Devil in the Meyerbeer grand opera Robert Le Diable, a masterpiece in its time but now an opera that has long fallen on the wayside. His French diction is superb, and his bel canto voice (and it is a bel canto voice) sounds golden, full, dark and rich. It is actually a good thing that he is 59 and singing roles that sound old, sinister and lecherous. Devils are normally regarded as old creatures and somehow Samuel Ramey makes them sound seductive and even beautiful to hear. He has a healing quality to his voice. Take for instance the dramatic-lyric Italian manner in which he sings Ecco Il Mondo from Arrigo Boito's Mefistofele. Mefistofele is a grand vehicle for the bass in the role of the Devil but again this opera was more popular in the old days. George London sang Mefistofele opposite Renata Tebaldi in an old 50's recording and that one is the best interpretation of them all, with grand Italian opera taking on flights of fancy. There is also another fine recording with Norman Treigle of the New York City Opera (he was Ramey's mentor) back in the 60's. The aria "Shine Diamond, shine" of the villainous magician in Offenbach's Tales of Hoffman is a specialty of Ramey's. I saw him performing the role on stage and have heard his full-length recording of all four villains in Hoffman. He makes the villains appropriately edgy and electrifying and suffuses the portrayals with a kind of Broadway musical theatricality mixed with rich lyricism. This is a great recording of Samuel Ramey's but not his best. This does not find him in his prime. To discover how magnetic his voice can be one has to listen to his earlier recordings, particularly those of his bel canto operas - Rossini and Verdi in particular- like Verdi's Attila, in which he sings the role of Attila the Hun, or Rossini's Iago in Otello. His voice was actually superb when he was not singing the lead baritone roles and instead singing minor bass roles like Angelotti in Tosca in the 1978 recording with Montserrat Caballe and Jose Carreras. He has also sung a fine bass role in Massenet's Manon wich starred Beverly Sills. His Robert Le Diable with June Anderson on studio recording is also excellent.
Swan song of a legend?.......2005-01-21
It pains me greatly to give this CD less than 5 stars, because I have been a huge Ramey fan for years. I sat in the orchestra pit on a few occasions while Ramey was a few feet above me, pouring forth sheer vocal glory. However, I sadly must agree with the other reviewers that the wear on his voice is beginning to show. The Amazon reviewer notes that for several years Mr. Ramey has toured the country with the repetoire on this disc.
Some of these are taxing arias, particularly 'Scintille, diamant!', and one wonders whether there would today be more left in the tank if Mr. Ramey had been a little more careful in his scheduling, and repetoire.
The voice sounds fatigued and worn. For a few of these arias, this is his second or third go around. The Boito arias he recorded in the mid 1980s on the Philips label, and those are fantastic. Ironically, it is these earlier recordings that are his enemy here. One can still hear the vocal brilliance and jaw-dropping agility of the voice on those discs, and the difference is marked. Here, the voice has lost some lustre. Clearly, age is a factor. The recorded legacy of Mr. Ramey is profound, but his best days are behind him. The late Renata Tebaldi retired from the stage at the relatively young age of 54, saying that she wanted to avoid 'the mortifying season of decline.' Mr. Ramey is not shaming himself, and he is a long way from such a season, but one wonders how much longer he will go on. What about a teaching position at Northwestern, since you are now a Chicago resident, Mr. Ramey?
Vecchio Ramey.......2003-12-24
I am so sorry to hear that Cd...because Ramey was my idol...He was the king of the opera world...He was the one who has the best technique....but this cd made me shocked...This old swinging voice....Arghhhh....
I think Everyone have to quit the job at the peak of their careers...I want to remember Ramey as the 1991 Mefistofele....not with this cd...
beyond all these words Ramey is still Ramey if we don't count this CD...The old performances makes me forget about it...
I hope this will be the last fault of him...this recording must be rated with 1 star but three stars are for the brightest star of the opera world...
Almost extinct........2003-05-31
Samuel Ramey is unique in the recorded history of opera. He is a bass- a true bass at that- with an intoxicatingly beautiful and resonant voice, possessing a phenomenal techniique with which he is able to lift his voice far above the limitations imposed on it by nature. He has sung Scarpia, one of the most demanding baritone roles in the italian repetoire- convincingly, and with an ease and elegance that any verdian baritone would envy. In fact, for a comparable technique among lower voices, one would have to go back to the great "virtuoso" basses of the early-middle of the 19th century such as tamburini, supposedly the greatest vocal genius among all operatic basses. No recordings exist of this extinct breed of singers who could challenge the castrati in the practise of florid singing and bel canto, but there are many detailed descriptions of their performances, vocal sound, and technique; as well as musical transcriptions of exactly what they sung.
Samuel Ramey is undoubtdedly such a singer. His combination of warmth, elegance, and sheer technical brilliance are unmatched among all basses in the history of recorded opera. His style has occasionaly been labelled as bland, pehaps by people who want to hear Chaliapin instead. But as great as the Russian bass was, Ramey posseses an altogether different mentality and represents a different method of schooling- indeed so unique among our time is his style that it is not difficult to understand why people sometimes don't "identify" with his characterisations. We all have ideas of how a certain piece should be performed after all.
By way of comparison, Giuseppe DeLuca was one of the great singers in the early years of the last century. He was a baritone, a great stylist and interpreter in the old belcanto tradition. In many ways his basic approach to singing resembled Rameys: poised, elegant, with an emphasis on restraint and a sort of "inner intensity" in his legato. He is one of the true geniuses among all baritones on record, and yet if one was to listen to him with inflexible modern ears his recordings may perhaps sound strange, maybe even dull and lacking in emotional fireworks. He is simply a different TYPE of singer than we generally hear nowadays, and so is Samuel Ramey.
So how does he sound on these recordings at the age of 60? His vibrato is noticably wider to be sure- so was Joan Sutherlands(among many) at that age, and as in Sutherlands case, it is more noticable on the longer, more legato passages. Be that as it may, his voice is larger, darker, and heavier because of his age, and with a tone as poised and resonant as rameys, a widening vibrato is both part and parcel. Do not mistake it for a wobble of the kind callas or carreras possesed- that is a result of forcing the voice, and Ramey never forces- wide it may be, but his vibrato is even and controlled.
His interpretations of all these characters (particularly the three mephistopheles' in Boito, Berlioz and gounod's operas) have gained tremendously over the years and have reached a peak on this cd. Added to that is the greater maturity of his voice, which raises these performances to a superlative level. In its best moments "A Date with the Devil" shows him to be an unparalleled virtuoso among basses, and still in possesion of the greatest basso-cantante of our time. The very well played and recorded orchestra led by Rudel, with whom Ramey has worked in the past, is a additional bonus.
In conclusion, Samuel Ramey may never eclipse memories of recordings from this repetoire by such singers as Boris Christoff, and George London, but certainly his intention is not to do so. As all of the very greatest singers have done, he is, with his highly unique style, carving out his own significant niche in operatic history.

Cramps - 'Date With Elvis' (Restless Records) 4 1/2 stars.......2006-04-06
Originally released in 1986,as this was their fifth 'actual' record(is that all?).Either way,'Date With Elvis' showcases some great rockin' psychobilly for your listening pleasure.Just about every track here kicks ass, like the swinging "The Hot Pearl Snatch","What's Inside A Girl?","Can Your Pussy Do The Dog?","Cornfed Dames"(forgot all about this superb cut),the boot-stompin' "Chicken" and "Aloha From Hell".As with most Cramps releases,'Date...' is most worth repeated spins.Simply a must-have.
Baby, you can't fail........2006-02-21
This album features the Cramps usual brand of rockabilly influenced punk (or punk influenced rockabilly), with a bit of surf music tossed in this time. This is one of the Cramps better albums. A lot of fun, raunchy songs like the classic "Can Your Pussy Do the Dog?". It even includes a rare lead vocal by Poison Ivy on "Get Off the Road". A must get for Cramps fans.
Kicks you in the head.......2001-07-17
The cramps are truly original and this album is one of their best. Lux Interior does his best psychotic Elvis imitaion on tracks like "Can Your ... Do The Dog?" and the opening track features Poison Ivy's vibrato pulsing country blues licks. All this and no bass player just pure garage rockabilly punk that kicks you in the head. The lyrics will make you laugh too.
Simply the best rock and roll album to be ever recorded........1998-12-24
The Cramps have shown the world that they have been a force to reckon with over the last 20 years. With every album their intensity becomes stronger, but most of all more sick. That to me is the true spirit of rock and roll! A date with Elvis is my personal fave. Who can forget the classics such as "Can your pussy do the dog?", and Hot Pearl snatch." The Cramps are the only band that I can think of right a-way that have remained true to their rock and roll roots and vision. Having met Lux, Ivy, Slim and Harry I must say they have a very intoxicating presence, but most of all are very kind people. (They always put me on the guest list!!!). Buy this album!!!! AllenGator

Della is hot!.......2003-12-29
I got the second album on this compilation years ago, used on vinyl. I don't remember why I took a risk on a Della Reese album, maybe she was covering a song I was familiar with by someone else. Oh, now I remember, Vaginal Creme Davis played a song by Della on a radio show she was guesting on, and that piqued my interest, tho Vag accidentally played a different track than what she was intending. I was on my post punk detour thru jazz vocalists and buying lots of stuff, getting into all the different versions of standards by everybody. I considered Della back then as an already washed up performer, appearing on Merv Griffin and being very boring to me as a kid. But once I dropped the needle on this live record, I was enthralled. Della burns up on stage, ripping thru songs, giving them such such verve and pep. Two words that come to mind are "sass" and "confidence." She knows what she is doing. She talks to the audience and alters lyrics (altering rhythms as she does it.) Her band is tight and hot. The horn section remeinds me of the theme to "Bewitched", all brassy and early sixties sounding. To this day, when I get the chills from a fun, spirited and peppy jazz vocalization (perhaps Joe Williams' "Alright,OK You Win" or Diane Reeves "Hello, Haven't I Seen You Before" [fast version]) I always think back to my first few spins of this record, the chills it gave me then. I am glad to see Miss Reese having so much success now.
ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING PERFORMERS EVER HEARD ON RECORD.......2000-07-22
Della Reese is the ultimate performer. Her voice is beyond description:amazingly powerful, expressive with flawless elocution and most original articulation, that requires much taste to be appreciated by real connoissers! Each song is a unique composition and none is like the other. After you listened to Della, the other blues or jazz stars seem colourless, despite their own qualities, they all are outcasted by Della's incredible temperament and talent. She is the alpha and the omega of song:she can sing everything, from gospel, blues to jazz and even classical music!!Della reese is without contest the BEST singer in the world! She has the trumpets of Jericho in her voice, and sings like an angel! She makes songs alive, she is not only an entertainer (actually the best) but she delivers a message in singing,of life, passion and joy.She is true and authentic and once you heard her,she put a spell on you forever! Moreover, she is gorgeous, and charismatic!Della Reese is the ultimate diva!

Laswell is Phatness Personified.......2005-01-05
The first thing I heard from Bill Laswell was his work with Buckethead on the album Colma. I just really liked the ambient bass guitar sound that he creates. The mixture of dub reggae with awesome soundscape-creating vocals and horns on this album is well worth a listen for anyone who likes music. If you listen to anything from Bob Marley to Pink Floyd, or if you just like to chill out to some really tight grooves, this is the album for you.

A Delightful Collection!.......2005-12-16
This is a delightful album. I don't know how ASV Living Era does it, but once again they have created a wonderful collection of 1929-1940 songs, this time by Hal Kemp & His Orchestra. The selection and arrangement of the songs is impeccable and the sound quality is superb. Every single song is a delight, so I'll just highlight a few, such as Forty-Second Street, Shuffle Off to Buffalo, Lullaby of Broadway, When I'm with You, This Year's Kisses and Remember Me? I highly recommend this uplifting CD. Thanks again, ASV Living Era, for your flawless compilations!
