david gates first.......2007-01-25
I owned this as an albumn when it first came out it is a great record. everyone should check it out.
"First" Rate Gates.......2006-06-20
Being a diehard Breadhead for the last God-knows-how-many years, I finally found this true gem of a debut CD less than a year ago, and I must say I'm not the "Last", I mean, least bit disappointed. Obviously the term "disappoint" has never been in David's vocabulary - his bulging resume' is proof enough of that fact.
Granted, I had already heard three-and-a-half tunes from this album on the essential Bread Retrospective 2-CD set (which are all "First"-rate), but I felt I just had to listen to the rest of his 1973 session activities. And for the most part he sounds revitalized and fresh, especially when you take into account his initial newfound freedom from a powerhouse vehicle such as Bread: Rockers including "Help Is On The Way" and "Sight & Sound" as well as the "Oye Como Va"-sounding "Lorilee" truly introduce to the listener a nicely refined Gates recipe.
Of course, the album's centerpiece, the near-nine-minute "Suite: Clouds/Rain," really gives this album the potential to get off the ground (though saleswise, unfortunately, it didn't - and that's a darn shame). For instance, the "Rain" verse, both melodically and lyrically, bears an interesting resemblance to something like "Martha My Dear" or anything done by the White-Album-era Paul McCartney. And, of course, the closing up-tempo Moog solo (I'm not quite sure whether that was played by Gates or Larry Knechtel - if anyone knows please tell me), which allows the entire band to stretch out, leaves the listener wanting more and more ...
There are other fine songs on the album as well; not all of them work, however. "Do You Believe He's Comin', in particular, sounds like a Neil Young cop-off whose subject matter borders on the overwrought - but hey, whoever said musical geniuses were perfect? (I sure as heck didn't ... oh well).
All told, a remarkable solo debut from a remarkable artist. Two more standouts were to follow: "Never Let Her Go" (despite its 26-minute-short brevity) and the respectable 1994 comeback "Love Is Always Seventeen," but "First" is the "Best" place to start ... CIAO Breadheads!!
great solo album.......2006-02-01
An excellent solo album from Gates. It has one of the best tracks of all time on it, 'clouds/rain', which is a lengthy almost progressive epic. A beautiful piano, moog and orchestra based song, with an incredible melody. Gates had started writing in this style before- listen to 'come again' off Manna, it is somewhat similar in complexity and structure.
'Do you believe he is comin' repeats the theme of Clouds, in the coda, which is beautiful also. The song itself is a primarily acoustic driven fast song, with a good melody, but the backing singers are slightly out of place in my opinion.
There are other exceptional songs here. 'Ann' is a beautiful acoustic ballad, similar to 'aubrey' or 'diary' in style. 'Sail around the world' is another gorgeous acoustic ballad, with a good melody. 'Soap' is also a nice little acoustic ditty that is very catchy and nicely harmonised. 'Lorilee' is a well performed soft jazz number, that I could imagine being performed on stage.
'Sunday riders' is a bit weaker, and although it has a good riff, it does not really go anywhere. 'Sight and sound' is enjoyable enough, but a bit bland and soon meanders. I am also not too fond of 'help is on the way', but I still think it is a well constructed song.
Such a shame that 'never let her go' is not available on CD. Not as good as this album, and the album cuts are way too short (most around the 2:00 mark, if that), but it is an engaging album nonetheless. It is also quite a lot more rocky than this effort, probably a deliberate change of direction. (although the ballads are still as engaging as ever!)
David Gates branches out--it's easy to see why he went solo..........2005-07-26
In terms of commercial success, Bread were still going strong into 1973, but it's easy to see why David Gates would have wanted to go solo. Quite simply, it seems as though he really wanted to be able to devote an entire album to his own material and not have to share space with James Griffin, which is perfectly understandable, not only because of Gates' enormous amount of talent, but also due to the personal nature of this album. Griffin doesn't appear on "First", but David's other Bread bandmates Larry Knechtel and Mike Botts are here, which is very telling indeed--that said, it seems utterly clear that Bread broke up mainly due to the tension between Griffin and Gates.
In addition to Knechtel and Botts, Gates has some big name West Coast session musicians on here including Larry Carlton, Louie Shelton, Jim Gordon, and Russ Kunkel. It's very fitting that "First" is a solo album--not only did David write and produce all the tracks himself, but there's a very personal and confessional nature to many of these songs that's striking. For instance, there's the wistful, gentle album-opener "Sail Around The World", a really moving and bittersweet song about coming to grips with the things you'd really like to do in life, but probably won't ever have the chance to do. "I Use The Soap" is another great tune that curiously matches upbeat, country-flavored acoustic music with reflective and quite mournful lyrics, although he does end the song with a ray of optimism for the future. "Sunday Rider" is a nice rocker with escapist lyrics that uncannily bring to mind Jackson Browne, though Browne was yet to reach his peak at the time of this album.
With Gates finally having a whole album to himself, you can clearly see him using the opportunity to branch out, and it's often to great effect. He puts Van Morrison, not to mention Chicago, to shame with "Help Is On The Way", a rousing and incredibly catchy jazz-rocker with cautionary lyrics telling us to not get too wrapped up in a race against time. He brings back a jazzy sound on the album-closer, the sumptuous and blissful "Lorilee", presumably written for another one of his children--it's largely instrumental, with great chord changes and instrumental soloing, although it does sound strikingly similar to the Allman Brothers Band's "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed".
Gates even steps into progressive rock territory with the extremely impressive "Suite: Clouds, Rain", almost undoubtedly his most imaginatively-arranged piece of music ever--it opens with sound effects, and then David comes in playing a lovely, melancholy piano theme before being joined by orchestral accompaniment. The goosebump-inducing "Clouds" was released on its own as a single--it's a dreamily transcendant song with masterful use of Moog synthesizer.
All that said, it would certainly be an exaggeration to say that "First" marks a clean break from the Bread sound. For instance, "Ann" very much sounds like it could have been on a Bread album; it was written for one of his daughters--unfortunately, the lyrics are quite obvious and sappy, although there's no denying that it's very nicely melodic and sincerely sung. The easy-going, country-flavored "Sight & Sound" is a pleasant song kind of along the lines of "Sweet Surrender".
Unfortunately, Gates falters on "Do You Believe He's Comin'" which has annoying, self-righteously religious lyrics and gospel-style background vocals. On the positive side, this tune does have a wonderful coda that reprises the intro of "Suite: Clouds, Rain".
Despite the flaws, "First" is still a highly recommended album that comes tantalizingly close to a masterpiece--Gates' diversity and ability to follow through on his ambitions is truly impressive, and as much great music as he would continue to make after this, it's still kind of a shame he never even tried to make another album that combined adventurous departures from his more trademarked style along with a sprawling, unifying feel. It figures that this album was a big commercial disappointment, not even reaching the top 100 on the US album chart, because David Gates makes it abundantly clear here that he's been far more than the mere commercial hack that certain people like to accuse him of being.
(P.S. This CD version of "First" is marred by the print on the back cover which is damn near impossible to read.)
Second is better.......2005-02-17
Nice songs and sound, but can't compare to his next - "Never let her go". Buy the LP, because there's no CD!!

David Gates Songbook.......2007-04-10
I was excited to see that there are 5 new songs on this project, one of them "Find Me" may be the best of all of the beautiful music, lyricly and musically that David has blessed us with. Anyone who has enjoyed his work with Bread and followed his solo projects should love to have this in their collection.

Whenever I've had a stress filled day.(No Beer in the Fridge, etc)
This is the CD I put on to calm my jaded senses and frazzled nerves.
A lot of these songs have been covered by other artists but
Mr Gates's versions are the only ones that work for me.
My title refers to the new material which I'd never heard before.
My two standout favourites are:~
The Guitar Man~this is one of my personal all time favourite songs.
Aubrey~ just a beautiful song.
Do YOUR jaded senses and frazzled nerves a favour and buy this CD!

Great Music from the Master Of Soft Rock.......2006-06-29
Well, I am, I believe, David Gates # 1 Fan - but I know there are thousands more like me out there, even now. The previous reviewers have very nicely discussed the 5 new recordings here - the best being I Can't Play The Songs, although Find Me was the single. So, to get the new songs out there, we get a compilation of 10 key Bread tracks and a measly 5 DG solo classics. There are more new songs available too, like "Love And Bide" that David has done in concert over the last 10 years. It's a wonderful collection, but as others have already said, why can't we get some David Gates solo hits like Clouds and Took the Last Train and Where Does The Lovin Go ? Make it a DAVID GATES album - the Bread tracks (perfect as they are) have been on CD 10 different ways already. WEA / Rhino - please release Gates' solo material 1973-1981, now that you've done almost all the Bread albums and a great 2 CD compilation. And come on.... Bread's Lost Without Your Love ! (never on CD anywhere ever). I would give everything I own (well, not my CD of Baby I'm-a Want You). Maybe the Wounded Bird label will come to the rescue. There has never been a David Gates solo CD of his 70's material released in the USA.... Anyway, I digress...
P.S. - I was greatly amused by the punk who complained that we Bread fans were the same ones who later listened to Barry Manilow, Little River Band, etc. - Damn Right ! and proud of it... I also listen to Led Zeppelin, Charlie Parker, Bob Marley, Bonnie Raitt, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Beach Boys.......GOOD MUSIC.
Good Overview of a Hit-Making Career.......2005-09-17
This CD consists of 15 previously released songs by David Gates (10 from his Bread days, 5 from his solo career), and 5 previously unreleased songs from his solo career - (although "Love Is Always Seventeen" has appeared in a slightly different edit on his 1994 CD of that title). This is a very good attempt at a career-spanning summary, although it may be of most interest to completists who want all of David Gates' output since 75% of it consists of previously released material. All-in-all, a good quality CD for fans of the easy listening songs of David Gates. (For fans of Bread, you might also check out some of James Griffin's solo and collaborative output - "Breakin' Up Is Easy", "Griffin & Sylvester", and his work with The Remingtons and Black Tie.)
Good Compilation Diminished by a Criminal Oversight.......2005-09-12
There's a few pages missing from this 'songbook'; while a good overview of David Gates' work in both Bread and on his own, any compilation with his name prominently displayed that does NOT include the impossibly seductive, absolutely unforgettable "Took The Last Train (To St. Tropez)" cannot lay claim to being complete - period, atypical or not. That breezy, midtempo song with a tear in its eye (a modest hit in 1978 following up "The Goodbye Girl", from the album of the same name) features one of THE most affecting sax hooks ever written.....

Customer Reviews:
The Best Bread Compilation.......2006-12-07
For me, this is the best compilation of BREAD. The song "Goodbye Girl" is included and that...is a real classic! I never get tired of listening to their songs...so pure and sincere. But the reason I only gave it four stars because their other classic, "Clouds" is not included in this cd. Who can ever forget that song especially the long version..."Clouds Suite" ... nevertheless, owning this cd is absolutely worth it!
A Complete David Gates And Bread Collection.......2006-05-16
In this collection, you can find all the smash hits made by this soft rock group of the 70's like: Make It With You, If, Baby I'm-A Want You, Everything I Own, Diary to name but a few. Every track here is a gem with its remastered sound. I also own the 1990 released "Anthology" but the sound quality of that really lets me down. So I bought this one for a better sound quality and just like I knew, "PERFECT". The most important thing is that "Goodbye Girl" is included. Although it was a David Gates solo hits but it should be included in every Bread greatest hits collection in the future. Just like the title "The Essentials of David Gates And Bread". Highly recommended to every soft rock fans.
David Gates and Bread. Man! I hate that title........2003-10-03
Ok, maybe I'm being political here but as far as I remember, everyone of the songs from the Bread catalouge was originally sold as "BREAD" not "David Gates and Bread". I understand that there are song from Gate's own catalouge here as well, but please. C'mon! There would have been no Bread without James Griffin. You'll remember him as the other principal singer songwriter and co-producer in Bread. Larry Knechtel, a member of the Wrecking Crew with his outstanding wah wah guitar work on "Guitar Man" is the icing on the Bread cake. His musicianship on multiple instruments saves the day for Bread so many times . Mike Botts drumming through out is solid and more then appropriate to give Bread the ultimate pop feel. This is truly a band that (like the Beatles) had four strong honest musicians that contributed to make Bread a name synonomus with the 70s.
But Bread should no more be referred to as David Gates and Bread then the Beatles should be called Paul McCartney and the Beatles. It's an insult to the other members. Would I recommend this album? Well if you can't buy all the Bread re-releases (which is what I would recommend) then save your money and buy "Retrospective". It better represents Bread in my opinion.
David Gates and Bread? Give me a break, pleeese.
Where's 'Take me now'.......2003-07-26
This Bread song collection keeps me stuck to my hi-fi. It has almost all the best hits. I don't have to hold the CD player remote to push fast forward. But I was looking for "Take me now" which keeps me reminiscing those good old high school days. I was a bit dissapointed discovering my favorite David Gates' love song was missing but I still recommend this gem.
The Best.......2000-06-11
One of the best singers to come out the 70's. Got them all and want more. Brillant

Forerunner to Sky.......2006-02-23
This CD is really a compilation of the 3 "experimental" albums John Williams did before his venture with the Prog Rock group Sky. So if you are a classical purist then you might not like this CD. Otherwise, it's a rare combination of songs from "Changes", "The Height Below", and "Travelling" - the 3 albums that eventually led to Sky. Also, a few songs from his work with Cleo Laine are thrown in.
The overall style of this CD is like a soundtrack (such as the music from "The Deer Hunter"). But it still features great guitar work as well (several from Bach). Williams' playing is clean and crisp - whether he is playing a straight classical piece or doing an accompanyment. You will see he is accomplished in both roles with this CD. Classical purists might consider this "light weight" but the rest of us call it accessable and interesting.

Album Description
Recording of twentieth-century American psalm settings features many recorded premieres, including works by Hovhaness, Nelson, Adler, and Hanson. Other composers included are Ives, Starer, Thompson, and Pinkham. This album was recorded in the splendid setting of Methuen Memorial Music Hall with its marvelous organ and acoustics. |
Gloriæ Dei Cantores has a mission to preserve and perform the finest sacred music. From its beginnings, the choir has also felt a special mission and an affinity for American music. There is a rich bounty of great American music that is rarely heard, and for that reason, Gloriæ Dei has now embarked on a series of recordings of American psalm settings.
Customer Reviews:
A remarkable compilation of 20th century American psalmody........2004-05-19
Elizabeth C. Patterson and her Gloriae Dei Cantores (Singers to the Glory of God) chorus had been total unknowns to me prior to about a year ago. The group had been brought to my attention then by Mark O'Connor's publicist, at which time he had been the guest artist on their "Appalachian Sketches" album. But that album, excellent as it was, turned out to be just the small tip of a significant iceberg in terms of choral singing, and particularly the American traditions of sacred choral singing over the last half-millennium.
I've since collected quite a few of their albums, and, to switch metaphors, this "Make His Praise Glorious" album may turn out to be the mother lode. Actually a religious choral community based on Cape Cod, MA, Gloriae Dei Cantores members have literally dedicated their lives to this music genre. In addition to recording at their "home base," they have also recorded frequently in Mechanics Hall, Worcester, MA and at Methuen Memorial Hall, Methuen, MA (where this particular recording was made). (For those who aren't familiar with the organ tradition in America, Methuen Memorial Hall is where the original organ in Boston's Symphony Hall found its "final resting place" after the formation of the Boston Symphony Orchestra rendered it redundant. Fully restored, reconstructed and revoiced in 1947, this organ is one of the finest historical organs in the U.S., and its permanent home-Methuen Memorial Hall-was built specifically for its properties, and for its perpetual preservation as well.)
The music on this album is as wide a variety of settings of the Psalms by 20th century American composers as one could ask for, covering a variety of liturgical points of view. Samuel Adler and Robert Starer (both Jewish refugees from Germany and Austria respectively who settled in the U.S and built significant careers in music afterwards) take their own individualistic approaches to their choices of psalms. Adler's, in English, is heroic, resplendent with two trumpets supporting the chorus. Starer's, in Hebrew, with piano accompaniment, are more reflective and smaller in scale, but equally well-done.
Alan Hovhaness's "Make a Joyful Noise" is a cantata in four parts based on Psalms 54, 55 and 66. Like much of Hovhaness's music, with its reflection of his Armenian roots, "Make a Joyful Noise" is otherworldly; simply a beautiful piece of writing. The opening Prelude is for trombone solo and organ; quite a piece by itself. The remaining three parts are the actual psalms; all three of them have the Methuen organ supporting the chorus and the second and fourth parts in addition have a brass quartet of two trumpets and two trombones. A joyful noise indeed!
There are four brief a capella motets set to psalms by David Pinkham, and excellent sacred choral works by Ronald A. Nelson, Howard Hanson and Randall Thompson. Thompson's setting of Psalm 23 ("The Lord is My Shepherd") is particularly beautiful, with the chorus accompanied by harp. (The booklet notes point out that Thompson set this for chorus plus optional organ, piano or harp. I believe that Elizabeth Patterson made a very wise choice in the harp option; it fits the music perfectly.)
All of the works already described were written in the middle third of the 20th century. All are readily accessible, and none could truly be called "modern." That description best fits the remaining work on the album,Charles Ives's setting of Psalm 90. Originally written in 1894, and possibly performed a few years later, when Ives was organist at the Central Presbyterian Church in New York, the work was then lost, and then reconstructed by Ives in 1923, partially from sketches he had preserved but largely from memory. (Ives had a prodigious memory, apparently, and could reconstruct works decades after they had been lost or abandoned.) Its first true public performance didn't take place until 1966,when the Gregg Smith Singers presented the official premiere. (The Robert Shaw Chorale then performed it the following year.)
This remarkable work is full of many Ives compositional touchstones, made famous in his later works, that belie its original date of composition. Written for chorus, organ and bells, it is in every sense a visionary work, full of unusual harmonies, stacked chords, harmonic ambiguities, and even tone clusters, and, as well, transcendent atmosphere (provided by the bells). Yet, despite this fearsome description of its constituents, the work is fresh and accessible, and, like the very best of Ives, very moving. In a phrase, it is an eleven-minute masterpiece, and easily the shining star of this album. And to think that it is the oldest work on the album, and by so many years!
Gloriae Dei Cantores do a splendid job with this difficult work, and this performance easily suffices as the best example of an Ives psalm in the absence of a remastering of the Gregg Smith Singers LPs that had so many good Ives choral works on them. Better yet, other albums by Gloriae Dei Cantores have additional Ives psalms on them.
As I finish writing these thoughts, we are less than 24 hours away from official observance of the 50th year since Ives's passing. A fitting tribute, I'd like to think.

Very hard to find cd that arrived as described in a quick manner
Best Of All........2005-12-28
Of all the album releases for the solo career of David Gates. Love Is Always Seventeen is the best by far. Which proves he's still got it. Every selection on this CD is awesome! And with other talents to back him up (Billy Dean, Larry Knechtel, Lee Roy Parnell to name a few). This CD is a can't miss. And if anyone doubts the man's ability. Check out the note liner to the song "Heart It's All Over". David played every instrument in the selection. A very intelligent musician/singer/songwriter of our time. The last selection, David is paying tribute to James Taylor in "Sweet Baby James". I'd just like pay a little tribute to Mr. Gates by saying, "Thanks for the great tunes all these years. Any may GOD BLESS you and your family!"
an abundance of Gates' melodic mastery & great vocals.......2005-06-02
One thought that really comes to mind with David Gates is that he's a man of quality over quantity. After a LONG hiatus from his musical career, Gates returned in the latter half of 1994 with "Love Is Always Seventeen", his first album since 1981. Granted, neither of Gates' previous two albums--1979's "Falling In Love Again" and 1981's "Take Me Now"--even reached the top 200 on the US album chart, so you could say that his popularity had reached a low, but without a doubt he still had a devoted fanbase and probably could have mounted a commercial comeback had he really wanted to. However, it seems that he felt the time was right for a break from the music business--perhaps he wasn't keen on following trends in pop music in order to lift his commercial fortunes, perhaps he was concerned about tarnishing his reputation, or maybe he just felt he had "said all he had to say" for the time being and wanted to explore a different path in his life.
With "Love Is Always Seventeen", Gates stays true to himself once again, and the result is a very welcome return indeed. Of the 11 tracks on the CD, 3 songs--"I Will Wait For You", "No Secrets In A Small Town, and "I Can't Find The Words To Say Goodbye--were written by David Gates and Billy Dean. 7 songs were written solely by Gates, and his incredible ear for melody clearly remains intact, plus his vocals are superb. As you'd expect from Gates, lots of ballads are here... The contemplative "Heart, It's All Over" is heartbreakingly beautiful (even with the intentional grammatical error on the second verse) and has a gut-wrenching bridge. The sighing title track is about an undying hope of finding true love eventually--it's profoundly moving. "Save This Dance For Me" and "I Can't Find The Words To Say Goodbye" aren't as strong, but they're still soothing ballads that feature Gates' smooth, warm vocals and tasteful, restrained production. There are a couple of fantastic, haunting mid-tempo pop-rockers--the superbly-harmonized "In The Air Tonight"-ish "I Don't Want To Share Your Love"; and "Avenue Of Love", with cutting, incisive lyrics which incorporate sly humor including an amusing chorus hook. The yearning "Dear World" and the relatively gritty "No Secrets In A Small Town" are solidly enjoyable tracks as well. The everyman-tribute "Ordinary Man" is the one track that Gates didn't write or co-write, and it's rather sugary, but it's no big disaster. Gates ends the album with the James Taylor tribute "Thankin' You Sweet Baby James"--the incorporation of a bunch of titles of Taylor songs in the lyrics is kind of eyeroll-inducing--but at the same time, it's a wonderfully melodic song with an affectionately Taylor-styled arrangement.
It's really satisfying to see David Gates, one of the great geniuses in music history, so in touch with his strengths and in such fine form on this album--no fan should hesistate to get a copy of this.
Welcome back to an "ol' friend" and great artist!.......2003-05-24
David Gates left the music industry in the early '80's- all too soon for me. 13 years passed and at least 100 times that number I would walk into a record store with the thought, "I wonder if David Gates has put out a new album?" In April 1995, I was killing some time while waiting for a Little Richard concert at the Cerritos Performing Arts Center with that very thought. Then I happened on "Love Is Always Seventeen" staring at me from the CD rack. I had to pinch myself and make sure it wasn't a mirage.
David Gates always leaned a bit to a country style in many of Bread's tunes. In this album, he moves a bit closer to the country genre as several '70's pop rocks stars have such as Dan Seals of England Dan & John Ford Coley. Mr. Gates has penned 7 new songs and co-written 3 songs with country singer Billy Dean. The album was engineered in Nashville.
This is a nice collection of songs! Mr. Gates continues to shine as a familar star with the soft ballads "Save This Dance For Me," "Heart's It's All Over" and "I Will Wait For You," co-written with Dean. Two of my favorites are "I Can't Find The Words To Say Goodbye" (classic David Gates lyrics- and it was nice to "see" and hear former Bread co-member Larry Knechtel playing piano on this song!) and "Dear World" (nice sentiment and great orchestration). He ends this album as the true, humble person David Gates has always been with a wonderful song tribute to a co-contemporary of his- James Taylor.
In his early mid-50's, Gates' voice sounds as good as ever- able to hit the high notes as smoothly as ever in his unique signature style. To all hard-core David Gates fans, this CD will please you on many old- and new- levels of his talent. Hopefully, this signals his return and we won't have to wait another 13 years to hear more of what this incredible talent has to "say" to us.
Bread for the hungry.......2003-01-01
'Love is always seventeen' really touched my heart. I've been waiting for a long time for new material from David Gates, as he's been one of my favorite composers/songwriters since the early seventies. Although you may miss the freshness and creativity of his former song arrangements on this album (like you will find on the outrageous album 'First' from 1973), you will hardly find more essential songs like 'Love is always seventeen' or 'I don't wanna share your love' on other todays albums. Most of all I was impressed by the last song on the CD: with 'Thankin' You Sweet Baby James' Gates gives tribute to another great composer of his generation. Now we're waiting impatiently for the new album. David, you're like good red wine: getting older means getting more interesting.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful introduction to a distinguished new series.......2003-09-29
I can't express how excited I am about this new series from Naxos and the Milken Archive! There is some absolutely stunning music on this sampler, and I can't wait until the full recordings are released. Especially notable are Ernst Toch's "Cantata of the Bitter Herbs" (what gorgeous choral & orchestral writing), Paul Schoenfield's Viola Concerto (utterly fantastic excerpt "King David Dancing Before the Ark"), the excerpt from Joseph Achron's suite from The Golem, "Open the Gates" from Dave Brubeck's Gates of Justice, and the lovely duet from Joseph Rumshinsky's Yiddish operetta "Di goldene kale." Also, if you're not familiar with Jewish liturgical music or with klezmer, there are wonderful examples on this disc. My only disappointment is that, because of economic reasons, most of the recordings had to be made with European ensembles. Although the performances are excellent (under directors Gerard Schwarz, Neville Marriner, Yoel Levi and others), it's just a shame that this music, which, in addition to being Jewish, is also very AMERICAN, cannot be preserved on CD by American ensembles. At any rate, I'm pretty certain that within the next couple of years, I'll have collected all the 50 discs in this project. You don't have to be Jewish to appreciate this great music. And at around $7.00 a disc, they're an incredible value. This marvelous sampler will get you hooked on some fabulous music.
