5 out of 5 stars One of the VERY few great rock albums of the 1990's.......2006-06-03

I was very disappointed when I found out Kathy McCarty
could not get a record deal after the release of this
album. One beautiful D. Johnston song after another,
and the production is perfect. The mid-90's is when I
really started searching for popular music from other
countries. (Two personal favorites -West African music
and filmi or Bollywood & Kollywood (mostly Tamil) soundtracks).
If not for this CD recording and Bob Moses great jazz album
TIME STOOD STILL I would have given up on the American pop music
scene. Not that either one of those records was ever very
popular of course.

4 out of 5 stars A sincere but bizarre cd.......2006-09-19

Daniel Johnston is a very overrated songwriter and performer. I think he is famous b/c it is in vogue to like him rather than Johnston actually having talent and being listenable.

He composes very childish lyrics and songs and plays them in a very pre-historic manner on the piano or guitar. There is some ability but the weirdness and eccentricity outshine the talent.

K. McCarty was a legitimate performer and arranger that brought to life these IDEAS for songs. These Daniel Johnston written songs are head and tails above Johnston's performed songs.

The cd starts out with "Walking the Cow" with its Bach v. Ramones motif.

"Rocket Ship" is the hardest rocker and is truly a weird tune.

"Living Life" in a way is quite beautiful and ordinary.

"Hey Joe" sounds like a continuation of "Hey Joe" (Hendrix) and "Hey Jude". The piano melody and outro riff is quite pretty.

"Oh No" has a powerful chorus.

"Museum of Love" is great b/c the song unexpectantly changes tempo.

"Grievances" is the most lyrically complex song and it is very interesting how rambling the words are.

I have owned this since 1994 and have always loved this strange cd. I tried to listen to pure Johnston, even the Butthole Surfers "Fun" and found it too much, too much weirdness and not enough mainstream talent.

Since seeing the film "Devil in Daniel Johnston" I have come to understand how K. McCarty was a true friend and why she did this cd and it makes me enjoy the cd even more.

This cd combines the whimsical nature of Daniel Johnston (with all of his distrubed lyrics and melodies) with the actual performer K. McCarty who knows what to do with these ideas.

This is a truly adventerous piece of work for anyone not familiar with the artist

Bar None Records out of Hoboken, NJ has just rereleased this fine album of Daniel Johnston songs performed by his former girlfriend Kate McCarty. I first heard of Johnston when this album was released 10 years ago and since then have bought several of his own albums, but I only caught up with the McCarty disc recently when I bought it at Jack's Records in Red Bank (Springsteen's favorite record store and New Jersey's finest). Katy, who is now married to Daniel's best friend from high school, met Daniel in the early 80s in Austin when she was singing with a popular local band and he was wandering around handing out home made tapes of his songs. Her arrangements demonstrate a real sympathy for his material and make his songs more accessible for those who might otherwise be put off by his "interesting" vocal style (which I love, personally). However, McCarty managed to be true to the innate quirkiness and emotional intensity of the originals so there is no sense of the compositions having been commercialized in an attempt to gain acceptance. A great introduction to Daniel's wonderful music and I hope its reissuance by Bar None, along with the documentary about Daniel currently playing at film festivals and art theaters, expands interest in this truly original artist.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums I've ever heard........2005-10-05

The praise is warranted. It is a travesty that this album did not receive wider airplay nor noteriety/career explosion for its creator(s). As with everything in the Daniel Johnston world, it has remained a cult piece. This, however, is somewhat irrelevant.

What is alarming here is that, in many cases, the songs have truly been made superior to the originals--a rare feat for a tribute. Beyond that, the integrity has been left fully intact. Just listen to the hypnotically beautiful "The Creature" or McCarty's take on "Sorry Entertainer." You won't be disappointed, DJ fan or not. One of the few albums I can stand behind whole-heartedly.

5 out of 5 stars Destined for Greatness.......2005-01-19

If you haven't already heard of this album -- you will. Here in the Philadelphia region we have a great radio station 88.5 WXPN out of the University of Pennsylvania. I was just out of high school when this album came out ca. 1995. While working at some crappy mall music store called "Tape World" I had access to all sorts of catalogues and could choose whatever I wanted.

So XPN was playing "Walking the Cow" and "Rocketship" pretty often and I took the chance on this album and I have loved it ever since. I have been a singer/songwriter since age 15 and I was immediately drawn to the sharp lyrics and strong arrangements which are as varied as the subject matter.

Trust me and the other reviewers this album is WORTH IT. If you don't love every song right away, play it tommorow and the next day and see if you don't love every song by the weekend. You will if you like classic rock and folk music - Kathy even tosses bluegrass, jazz and blues in for good measure.

Independent (read GOOD) music is not dead it has just gone underground. There is a strong movement for real proletarian art and I see Daniel's songs and Kathy's interpretations in line with some of the finest musicians out there.

5 out of 5 stars Unsurpassed.......2004-04-04

It is such a rare gem.... like I wrote elsewhere, it gave me the emotional release that I needed when I was going through a crucial transition. I don't know what I would have done without it. I think it needs to be rereleased with some bonus stuff to introduce to a new generation of Daniel Johnston fandom, esp. to accompany the new tribute album that has various artists on it. I think if aimed at the right people, it could get the attention it always deserved. Or maybe its best as a secret treasure.....
