Contrary to the name, they are not French! This is their second release, damn is it great. All the songs are guitar driven songs with very addictive melodic hooks. They are fashion plates in concert.
Song #3 Unintouch is my favorite its a slow song that picks up different melody layers. But everysong is great, I discovered them a few years ago when they played their first cd at my local Cheapo store I was hooked after that.
If you like Jason Faulkner, Cherry Twister, Sugarbomb please buy this cd! Kind of makes a person angry that hacks like Dave Matthews are out there making a fortune writing the same song over and over while Matty Schindler aka Faux Jean just continues to crank out superb songs and not get recognition! O.K. I'll stop ranting now!

      Anna Varney, lead singer and primary artist and composer of Sopor Aeternus And The Ensemble Of Shadows, is without any doubt in my mind, the most gothic human being on this planet. Formerly a male, (rumours of a sex change abound), her/his (?) voice carries like the most beautiful and the absolute most creepy voice in music. Meaningful, dark, ultra depressing hymns to some far away world. If your looking for "the gothest of them all", you need look no further, this is it!! The music, hard to really explain,.but to give you an idea of the instruments used on this album, here is a summary: double bass, violin, cello, basson, counter basson, oboe, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, tuba, and drums. Total musicianship, total darkness, major, major, major creepy. Still quite beautiful in a morose way. Any Sopor Aeternus album is a good place to start, as they are all amazing.

      Oh god I'm so depressed, oh I'm sooooo alone... This is the winiest drivel I've ever heard and also one of the funniest albums ever made. The vocals are so overwrought with "grief" and "pain" and the lyrics are so unbelievably melodramatic that on first listen I burst out laughing, it still kills me. Remember the Saturday Night Live skit where Chris Kattan and Molly Shannon played goth highschool kids holding their "prom of darkness" in the janitors utility room? This is the soundtrack. Should appeal to people still living with their parents or those who need a good laugh.

      This second installment of the Dead Lovers Sarabande series is by far the most complex and intriguing to date. It seems to have taken the best features of all former Sopor Aeternus releases and woven them into one dark, orchestral tale. The Dead Lovers Sarabande recordings are less "albums" and more "mini-operettas". Cello, violin, oboe, flute, horns....all performed by a full orchestra and most backed by Anna-Varney's ever lamenting voice. It is musically more aggressive and "masculine" than Face One, and unlike most SOPOR recordings this one doesn't have any songs would be considered "darkwave" or club friendly, such as "Hades Pluton" from Face One or "Memories Are Haunted Places" from The Inexperienced Spiral Traveller. I am fortunate enough to own most Sopor Aeternus recordings, and this is definately my favourite!

      Legendary ghastly creature Anna Varney deliveres another dark masterpiece from the darkest cave of her psyche. The sound of The Dead Lover's Sarabande, Face I and Face II is a bit more refined and lacks the landmark sickly feel to the songs. Some old fans might get upset over it, while others might see it as a progression. It's just very sad, hopeless, desperate and desolate music. As before, the sound varies from apocalyptic folk to medieval dance to darkwave. The artwork alone makes this an absolute delight for a Sopor fan. If Dead Lover's Sarabande 2 parts are not the best Sopor Aeternus releases, they are definitely the saddest. Listen to this music in remebrance of your deceased lovers, may they rest in peace...

      It's not perfect, but I liked it's originality. None is really scary, just some of the songs are kinda odd. I reccomend it just because it is different!

      I would like to paraphrase part of the liner notes for you, not because I believe it to be factual, but because it will tell you what this CD sounds like. I enjoyed the music, but then again, I own more than one CD by Goblin...I am not giving this CD more than three stars because I think it has somewhat limited appeal.

      Never before released in the United States, this romantically macabre score is one of the only things remaining from the cult classic "Gli Amore Morti Benevolenza Ritormano". Coming straight from the Italian horror film movement of the seventies, this soundtrack holds the classic marriage of tension and beauty often found in this genre. With its dream-like scenes and surrealistic cinematography, "Dead Lover" quickly became popular in art houses around Italy. Unfortunately, after it was banned for its subliminal messaging, copies became impossible to find. The director, like his film, dropped into obscurity, leaving only a few story boards and original poster art behind. [Composer and performer] Nathaniel Chance Ashley was rumored to have moved to the United States where he released a few pop albums under a slightly different name.

      The booklet also indicates that this music was intended to be listened to at night, alone, in the dark.

      this cd is somewhat rare, as i have found, because i've been completely unable to find any of its' beautiful music in mp3 format, or any sort of mention of it from anyone else. i stumbled across this at the radio station i work at, and i was hooked.

      my favourite track on this cd is number 7, "the raven festival". i highly recommend this album, and maybe someday it'll get the recognition that it truely deserves.
