5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Band.......2007-04-27

I forst saw DBS at EdgeFest in 1995, Along with Adam Ant, Letters to Cleo, Veruca Salt, POL, and someother bands. I believe that the Toadies and Nixons were there, I may be getting them mixed with other bands. Anyways, They were clearly the best band on state that day. I also have seen in concert 3 other times and their performance can compete with any other concert that I have gone to. I can honestly say that I can listen to all of their albums without skipping over any songs. Being from Dallas and also working with Clay Bergus's Mother-In-Law, I may be Biased since they are from Denton.

They are a great band and I will be one of the first in line if they ever do some type of Reunion concert

P.S. There was a Special Release of "Home" that had extra songs. They did a version of "Dear Prudence" by the Beatles. The other one I cannot remember, but it was a great song

5 out of 5 stars Always did like this group and album, One hit wonders of the 90's.......2006-12-09

Many people are mad because Breakfast at Tiffany's is different sounding than many of the other songs on this album, but I enjoy the whole thing, always have from the day I bought it back in 1995. It is unfortunate that the record company didn't push other songs as much as this breakfast at tiffany's, like Halo, or I can wait, but some bands historically have to become one hit wonders. Like Dexy's midnight runners from the eighties with Come' on Eileen, or Gloria Gainer with "I will survive" in the 70's, and even "the byrds" in the 60's with "turn turn". Yes one song is great, but be objective, as a music fan, this album is good, just give it a chance.

3 out of 5 stars One fantastic song, but that's all.......2005-12-03

Three stars for the album, but it's really 5+ stars for "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and 1 star for the rest. To my ears, "Breakfast at Tiffany's" is a terrific song from start to finish (great writing, great singing/playing, great recording quality), while the rest of the album is complete "throwaway" or empty filler. The other songs aren't offensive, they are just boring (incredibly light & pointless acoustic stuff). The "other" songs on the CD don't even sound like they were recorded by the same band that did "Breakfast at Tiffany's". What a shame that the band couldn't give us something else at least remotely resembling that one song (on this album, I haven't heard their others), oh well. So if you buy this, don't have high expectations for the other songs, just figure you are getting it as an expensive single. Maybe you'll be pleasantly surprised by some of the other songs, but unfortunately I wasn't.

4 out of 5 stars if you liked the B @ T's song..........2004-12-28

I noticed a lot of folks liked "Breakfast at Tiffany's", then some either liked the rest of it and some didn't. If you like that song (and it is kinda catchy), you are highly likely to like Pop Art, a band I really enjoyed in the mid-late eighties. There is a retrospective CD available, so it's not like you have to go a-hunting for old vinyl. When B@T came out, it was killing me how much it sounded like a Pop Art song. Thought I'd share that obscure gem with anyone who might be reading these reviews!

4 out of 5 stars Read "Mobile Estates" review, change a few song titles........2004-12-10

Seriously...I never saw this coming, and I certainly don't know what to make of it, but I feel EXACTLY the same way about Home (especially Re. DBS) as Mobile Estates (especially Re. Citizen King). Compare and contrast:

* The breakthrough hit that's really easy to identify because it's completely unlike everything else they ever did.
* The general "life isn't the greatest, but we're making the most of it" mentality (a dependable alt-rock staple).
* Lots of seemingly thrown together lyrics that kinda make more sense after repeated listenings.
* A consistently vibrant but still fairly mellow beat; the tracks almost blend into each other.

Add it all up and...well, if you're a fan of alt-rock, you'll like it. Plain and simple.

(P.S. I was going to add You Can't Stop The Bum Rush, but even I think that's a little too much of a stretch. :-D)

4 out of 5 stars great considering what I paid for it!.......2002-06-29

As you can probably guess from the title, I got this cd very cheap from a clearout sale in a music shop. Because of this I assumed it would be no good, but I really like it. Most of the songs are good, and they are quite varied which i like. My favourite is 'Pullman, Washington', sang by Todd. I only wish it included 'breakfast at tiffanys', but it is good enough without it!

Maybe I should have been move savy to check the song before I bought this CD,... But this CD does Not have the Popular version of "Breakfast at Tiffany's". I was really disappointed when I first played the CD. Bummer! Oh Well, Live and Learn.

5 out of 5 stars DBS: the college years.......2000-11-15

Before Breakfast at Tiffany's was released to a world starved for music that didn't sound like Nirvana, Deep Blue Something was a college band in Texas. This is their college album. As such, it is not poppy, it is not happy. Often wistful and reflective about the strangeness of the college experience, the lyrics range from cerebral to nonsense and back. Musically, the album is under-produced, but don't let that stop you. If you can get past the guitars that actually sound like a guitar might sound if you were to pick one up, the chords are silly, and the solos are melodramatic, but in the best ways. This is DBS playing in a band because they were having fun. Overall, a much more complex album than Home, and far more cohesive than Byzantium. Worth picking up!

1 out of 5 stars BAD ALBUM BY A GOOD GROUP.......2005-06-07

ok, I am a fan of deep blue something(or was), I loved every song off of the album HOME and still listen to it all the time, I was very dissapointed with this album,it is very bland in sound and the songs are not catchy like HOME they down right STINK, I bought it with out listening to it first because I liked their album HOME I will not make that mistake again if I even listen to another one of their albums again. It lasted about 10min. in my CD player before I removed it,I have tried listening to it again to try and learn to like it just cant, awefull album.I RECOMEND NOT WASTEING YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY ON THIS CD LIKE I DID.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing Like Deep Blue Something.......2003-09-26

I feel kinda weird not posting a review sooner. If you've heard of Deep Blue Something, you've probably heard the huge hit, "Breakfast At Tiffany's". It was the hit single of their "Home" record in 1995. This album "Deep Blue Something", is a little bit different, a little bit more mature, and a more experimental. It contains the Beatlesq single "She Is", cool alternative hits, such as "Military Man", "Higher","Page Me Wolverine", the funkier songs "Number One", "Burning A Past", "So Precious", "Beautiful Nightmare" and the ABSOLUTLY ADDICTIVE AND AMAZING "Park Bench" (best song on the album in my opinion). There are also slow pretty songs such as "Hell in Itself", "Focus" and "Enough to Get By". And last but not least, a harder rock song, "Who Wants It" to complete the myraid of genres.

I think it's their best album yet. In my honest opinion, Out of my favorite 10 Deep Blue Something songs out of all 4 of their albums, 6 are from this one. If you like Gin Blossoms, Semisonic, Third Eye Blind, or R.E.M., you'll love this album.

5 out of 5 stars Proving to the world they are NOT a "1-hit wonder".......2001-12-17

For everyone who has driven around singing at the top of their lungs the song "Breakfast at Tiffany's" fear not, this CD will have your voice severely hoarse. The layout of the tracks (the marching order of them) are extremely well done as tracks 4-6 flow perfectly as they progress into the next. For those looking to find a link back to the "catchy sing-a-long" chorus of "Breakfast at Tiffany's" then you must listen to "Burning a Past." With guitars reminiscent of U2's The Edge and vocal harmonies that we've come to love from this band, it just doesn't get any better than this. Other songs that just make you roll your car windows up to sing ( i don't know about you but i don't subject the world to my voice) are "Higher", "Military Man", "Number One" and "Beautiful Nightmare." I disagree with Heather's review previous to mine that said "I miss slower, mellower songs like "Home" as DBS produced some great mellow tracks on this CD especially the song "Enough to Get By." If you are looking for a CD where every song is a potential hit, then look no further... You just found it.

4 out of 5 stars Good, solid major label sophomore album.......2001-10-09

Granted, I like other DBS fans was first atracted to their smash "Breakfast at Tiffany's", but I feel in love with the rest of their album Home. This album is no different. I first heard "She Is" on a local rock station, and after my initial shock of it being DBS, I knew I had to have the album. Let me say I was not entirely disappointed. Yes, it's their second major label album, and while not as polished sounding as Home, it's a solid album with great poppy-rock songs. My only complaint is that is can ocasionally get a bit loud in parts, which is why I only gave it 4 stars. I miss slower, mellower songs like "Home." Keep up the good work guys!

I've never listened to their earlier release, other than moderately enjoying "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and hearing it played ad nauseum on the radio a few years back; so when I listened to "She Is" I was really happily surprised to realize they can write more than just sappy pop-rock songs! "She Is" is full of great "retro" alternative rock songs, reminding me sometimes of Material Issue with a dose of New Order, occasionally spiced with Early 90s Cure guitar work. It's become an addicting album to listen to, since each song is solid and entertaining. It's rare for me to find an album that I take to as instantly as this one did, but it was just so likeable! Some days I can't take "Page Me Wolverine" off of repeat. I highly recommend this album.

3 out of 5 stars Great music, lacks flow.......1999-12-04

Okay, well, every single one of the songs on this album is great. They really have musical talent, and I think if they keep up this great sound, Deep Blue Something will hit the charts once again. They have uniqe sounds to guitar, and create an interesting echo at times, which I like a lot.

But... this cd is really lacking flow. None of the songs fit together, they're just randomly placed, sounding all vastly different from each other. While the music is great, the lack of flow takes away from the overall quality of this album. It's an album you're most likely going to end up skipping around tracks just to get a remote feel of flow.

Besides that, I think that Todd Pipes (lead vocals) has a great voice, and so does Toby Pipes (second lead). They might have lost a little when they ditched their old guitarist, Kirk Tatom, but it wasn't all that bad when they replaced him with Clay Bergus. Clay is also a talented guitarist.

Due to legal problems, they were unable to release this album in the USA, even though the first album sold well and Breakfast At Tiffany's will never be forgotten. It's going to make it all the more difficult for them to make a hit when they release their new album "This Spaceship Called Earth" in the Spring of 2000. We can only wait and see what happens.

As for this album, it's good... but the next one will need to be improved from this.

5 out of 5 stars GETTING BETTER EVERY TIME!.......1999-11-19

BYZANTIUM is definitely different in style and sound from the previous releases which is what makes it so great! There is something for EVERYONE on this cd. My personal favorite PARKBENCH (Toby Pipes). It somewhat of personal meaning to myself, but only TOBY could "take you there..." CHECK it out! And guys the new one is coming soon.... (SPACE STATION EARTH)

5 out of 5 stars Local Fanatic " It just gets better and better everytime".......1999-06-17

The better bands come out of Denton and this one is by far the best! I too wish that they would release more in the US, at least in Dallas, if no where else. A few reviews have said that they are a one hit wonder with "Breakfast At Tiffany's". No doubt everyone loved the song, but the one hit that gets released is never the best song they produce, ex. Red Light (Home), A Song To Make Love To (Home), Parkbench (Byzantium), Loneliest Man (11th Song). Only a real music fan and Deep Blue Something Fanatic could know. Can't wait for the next one, which the real fans may like to know, they've already started working on it. Hey John, as you already know, you're the greatest!!!
